O vocalista norte-americano Robert Lowe é considerado uma das vozes mais emblemáticas do doom metal mundial, tanto pela sua importância no Solitude Aeturnus — ajudando a consolidar o epic doom como um subgênero — quanto pela sua contribuição à trajetória de uma das maiores bandas do estilo, o Candlemass.
Robert chega ao Brasil neste mês de abril para uma mini tour de três datas(dia 10 em São Paulo, 11 em Sorocaba e 12 no Rio de Janeiro. Midgard e Loss são as bandas convidadas na turnê) onde apresentará clássicos do Solitude Aeturnus e Candlemass.
Conversamos com Robert para falar um pouco dessa história e contribuição para o estilo. Confira!
Renato: Oi, Robert.
Robert: E aí, irmão?
Renato: Cara, meu nome é Renato, do site Road to Metal. É um prazer falar com você.
Antes de começarmos, preciso dizer que não falo muito inglês, estou me desafiando aqui. Sou muito seu fã, Robert, seja com o Solitude ou Candlemass.
Robert: Sabe de uma coisa? Podemos dizer logo que, atualmente, moro na Noruega, não falo muito norueguês, então, sabe, estamos na mesma página. [risos]
Renato: Para início de conversa, vamos falar sobre seus anos no Candlemas. Diga-me, quais são as principais contribuições que você acredita ter deixado como legado para a banda durante esse período?
Robert: Bem, boa pergunta. Contribuição? Você sabe, espero que com esse tempo que passei com esses caras, que são ótimos, isso tenha contribuído para melhorar o que eles vinham já fazendo. Ninguém estava tentando melhorar, mas apenas adicionar algo para que todos nos sentíssemos confortáveis com o que o que estávamos fazendo.
Renato: Ainda sobre sua história com Candlemas, o álbum “Death Magic Doom” se tornou um álbum muito amado pelos fãs, com músicas que se tornaram icônicas, como “Hammer of Doom”. Eu gostaria que você falasse sobre a importância deste álbum na sua carreira e um pouco sobre como ele foi concebido.
Robert: Bem, você sabe, Hammer of Doom é Hammer of Doom. Eu adoro tocar essa música, adoro tocar. Uma das coisas sobre todo esse álbum é que conseguimos retratar certas coisas, mas essa, essa me toca profundamente, sabe, porque, quero dizer, há poder.
Leif e os caras, Lars, Lasse e Mappe, sabe, caras ótimos, músicos ótimos. E, sabe, você tem que dar os parabéns a esses caras.
Quer dizer, eu, eu não fiz nada. Eu não sou ninguém. [risos]
Então eu não fiz nada. Mas poder lançar algo assim é uma coisa que te qualifica, te permite ser quem você é. E, novamente, aqueles tempos e estar com o Candlemass foram momentos de qualidade.
Renato: A próxima pergunta é sobre a era Solitude Aeturnus. Diga-nos, como foi formar uma banda de Doom Metal no Texas, a terra do Southern Rock e da cultura country? Quais foram suas principais inspirações?
Robert: Bem, antes de mais nada, preciso dizer que adoro ser texano e sempre vou apreciar isso. Mas o que importa é que, como você perguntou, o John Perez e o Lyle, que sempre foi meu amigo de longa data, nós dois ouvimos, sei lá, Pentagram, Trouble, sabe, Celtic Frost, certo? E tipo: “ei, a gente devia fazer isso.” E aí você pensa, dane-se, vamos fazer. E aí você acaba fazendo! [risos]
Mas o ponto é que a qualidade desses caras, sabe, com os instrumentos deles e o que eles fazem é importante, porque você pode confiar no seu colega de banda. Porque seu colega de banda é importante quando você está no palco ou em qualquer outra coisa que você faça: A qualidade da amizade. Acho que é isso que faz com que, seja com quem for, você traga essa qualidade para a mesa, que vai permitir que você faça o que tem de ser feito.
Renato: Agora uma pergunta muito importante para mim. Gostaria que você falasse um pouco sobre “Beyond the Crimson Horizon”.
Robert: Nossa! Sim, sim. Fantástico.
Renato: Perfeito. Ele é considerado por muitos a obra-prima da banda, um álbum magistral, cara, ostentando a melhor atmosfera e a mistura perfeita de doom esmagador e melodia. Conte-nos o que você acha disso e se concorda. E claro, o que este álbum significa para você?
Robert: Bem, fazer esse álbum, e vou ser breve na resposta, o que não vou fazer porque seria uma mentira. [risos]
A música precisa te levar em uma jornada, e fazer esse álbum com esses meus amigos, simplesmente, eu não sei como dizer de outra forma, mas você simplesmente faz acontecer!
E as letras, e a música, e o tempo que você passa com cada um…escrever riffs de guitarra, e/ou, sabe, ei, que tal essas letras? Ou que tal aquelas? Sabe, tudo isso, a culminação de todo o processo é o que importa.
E tem tanta coisa envolvida. Mas eu amo esse álbum.
Renato: É um álbum foda!
Robert: É mesmo. E eu sou extremamente feliz por ter feito parte desse processo. Quer dizer, significou muito para mim poder ter meus companheiros de banda, meus amigos, fazer algo juntos. Significou muito para mim.
Renato: Para mim, este álbum é uma obra-prima do metal.
Robert: É o melhor. É isso aí, irmão.
Renato: E se é possível escolher: Candlemass ou Solitude Aeturnus? Qual a sua preferida? [Risos]
Robert Lowe: Sabe de uma coisa? Ambos são os melhores porque o Candlemass traz algo para a mesa e o Solitude traz algo também. Se eu estivesse na sala de estar, ou no quarto, e fosse colocar um álbum para ouvir, eu gostaria de ouvir Messiah Marcolin no Candlemass, ou ouvir Solitude Aeturnus... é uma daquelas coisas que depende do que fala aos seus sentimentos ou emoções. O Leif traz isso e, como eu disse antes, todos os caras do Solitude também. São todos pessoas incríveis.

Interview - Robert Lowe: "Music Needs to Take You on a Journey."
The North American singer Robert Lowe is considered one of the most emblematic voices in world doom metal, both for his importance in Solitude Aeturnus—helping to consolidate epic doom as a subgenre—and for his contribution to the trajectory of one of the style's greatest bands, Candlemass.
Robert arrives in Brazil this April for a mini-tour of three dates (April 10th in São Paulo, April 11th in Sorocaba, and April 12th in Rio de Janeiro. Midgard and Loss are the guest bands on the tour) where he will present classics from Solitude Aeturnus and Candlemass.
We talked with Robert to discuss a bit of his history and contribute to the style. Check it out!
Renato: Hello, Roberto.
Robert: Hey, brother?
Renato: Man, my name is Renato, from the Road to Metal website. It's a pleasure to talk to you.
Before we begin, I need to say that I don't speak much English; I'm challenging myself here. I'm a big fan of yours, Robert, whether with Solitude or Candlemass.
Robert: You know what? We can say right away that, currently, I live in Norway, I don't speak much Norwegian, so, you know, we're on the same page. [laughs]
Renato: To start the conversation, let's talk about your years in Candlemass. Tell me, what are the main contributions you believe you left as a legacy for the band during that period?
Robert: Well, good question. Contribution? You know, I hope that with the time I spent with these guys, who are great, it contributed to improving what they were already doing. Nobody was trying to improve, but I just added something so that we all felt comfortable with what we were doing.
Renato: Still on your history with Candlemass, the album "Death Magic Doom"
became a much-loved album by fans, with songs that became iconic, such as "Hammer of Doom". I'd like you to talk about the importance of this album in your career and a little about how it was conceived.
Robert: Well, you know, Hammer of Doom is Hammer of Doom. I love playing that song, I love playing it. One of the things about this whole album is that we managed to portray certain things, but this one, this one touches me deeply, you know, because, I mean, there's power.
Leif and the guys, Lars, Lasse and Mappe, you know, great guys, great musicians. And, you know, you have to congratulate those guys.
I mean, I, I didn't do anything. I'm nobody. [laughs]
So I didn't do anything. But being able to release something like that is something that qualifies you, allows you to be who you are. And, again, those times and being with Candlemass were quality moments.
Renato: The next question is about the Solitude Aeturnus era. Tell us, what was it like forming a Doom Metal band in Texas, in the land of Southern Rock and country culture? What were your main inspirations?
Robert: Well, first of all, I need to say that I love being Texan and I will always appreciate that. But what matters is that, as you said, John Perez and Lyle, who has always been a longtime friend of mine, we both listened to, I don't know, Pentagram, Trouble, you know, Celtic Frost, right? And like: "hey, we should do this." And then you think, screw it, let's do it. And then you just did it! [laughs]
But the point is that the quality of these guys, you know, with their instruments and what they do is important, because you can trust your bandmate. Because your bandmate is important when you're on stage or anything else you do: The quality of the friendship. I think that's what makes it so that, whoever it is, you bring that quality to the table, which will allow you to do what needs to be done.
Renato: Now a very important question for me. Roberto: Wow! Yes, yes. Fantastic.
Renato: Perfect. It's considered by many to be the band's masterpiece, a masterful album, man, boasting the best atmosphere and the perfect mix of crushing doom and melody. Tell us what you think about it and if you agree. Of course, what does this album mean to you?
Robert: Well, make this album, and I'll be brief in my answer, which I won't do because it would be a lie. [laughs]
Music needs to take you on a journey, and making this album with these friends of mine, simply, I don't know how else to say it, but you just make it happen!
And the lyrics, and the music, and the time you spend with each one…writing guitar riffs, and/or, you know, hey, how about these lyrics? Or how about this? You know, all of that, the culmination of the whole process is what matters.
And there's so much involved. But I love this album.
Renato: It's a fucking awesome album!
Robert: It really is. And I'm extremely happy to have been a part of this process. I mean, it meant a lot to me to be able to have my bandmates, my friends, to do something together. It meant a lot to me.
Renato: For me, this album is a masterpiece of metal.
Robert: It's the best. That's it, brother.
Renato: And if it's possible to choose: Candlemass or Solitude Aeturnus?
Which one is your favorite? [Laughs]
Robert Lowe: You know what? Both are the best because Candlemass brings something to the table and Solitude brings something too. If I were in the living room, or in the bedroom, and I was going to put on an album to listen to, I would want to listen to Messiah Marcolin on Candlemass, or listen to Solitude Aeturnus... it's one of those things that depends on what speaks to your feelings or emotions. Leif brings that and, as I said before, all the guys from Solitude too. They are all incredible people.
