Antes de iniciarmos a falar deste novo álbum do Heavenwood, é bom fazer um breve histórico, para quem ainda não conhece a pioneira banda de Dark/Gothic Metal Portuguesa. O grupo , oriundo de Vila Nova de Gaia, iniciou atividades lá no início dos anos 90, ainda sob o nome Disgorged, lançando duas demos, trabalhos que chamaram a atenção da Massacre Records.
No selo alemão faz sua estreia em 1996, com o álbum “Diva”, e já rebatizados como Heavenwood (que foi tirado do título de uma música da primeira demo, “Judith Heavenwood”), pois o antigo nome já não parecia adequado à evolução sonora da banda, que estava mais sombrio e melódico.
Com “Diva” (96), o Heavenwood rompeu fronteiras, e foi a primeira banda de Metal Portuguesa a ter material também distribuído no Japão.
Com “Swallow” (98), Heavenwood expandiu ainda mais a sua sonoridade melódica e sombria, e também o seu nome no cenário mundial, se tornando a primeira banda lusitana de Metal a tocar no Wacken. Vale ressaltar que contaram como convidados no álbum, Kai Hansen e Liv Kristine.
Apesar de um, digamos, recuo nas atividades, principalmente turnês, o Heavenwood seguiu lançando álbuns os quais sempre buscavam novos desafios, e tendo o desejo de fazer música e arte principalmente.
Então vieram “Redemption” (2008) e o orquestral “Abyss Masterpiece” (2011), inspirado na obra da poetisa portuguesa Marquesa de Alorna, e em 2016 apresentou sua, provavelmente, obra mais ousada, a primeira parte de duas de “Tarot of the Bohemians”.
Com a inspiração lírica nas palavras de Gérard Anaclet Vincent Encausse (13 de julho de 1865 – 25 de outubro de 1916), cujos pseudônimos esotéricos eram Papus e Tau Vincent, foi um médico, hipnotizador e popularizador do ocultismo francês, fundador da Ordem Martinista moderna, o Heavenwood entregou um trabalho instigante, coberto de camadas inspiradas tanto musicais, como liricamente falando, transportando o ouvinte por uma atmosfera densa, pesada, melódica e reflexiva.
Em 2022 o mentor e mente criativa do Heavenwood, Ricardo Dias, sofreu um acidente quase fatal, e essas lutas pessoais, aliadas a mudanças de formação, chegaram a colocar em dúvida a continuidade da banda, e por conseguinte, da conclusão da obra.
Mas felizmente, dez anos após sua primeira parte, “Tarot of the Bohemians Part II” , sexto álbum da banda, finalmente teve seu lançamento oficial no dia 12/06/2026, via Mighty Music.
São 10 músicas, as quais completam a obra que aborda os 22 arcanos maiores do tarô, e marcam também uma nova fase, com uma visão mais individual de Ricardo Dias, que a partir de 2024 iniciou a produção do álbum.
Ricardo foi responsável por gravar todos os instrumentos, além dos seus vocais, com exceção da bateria, gravada por Eduardo Sinatra. A bela e misteriosa arte da capa foi concebida pela artista gráfica Naya Kotko.
Neste universo abordado, onde cada ouvinte certamente também terá sua própria interpretação e será tocado pela música e atmosfera de formas diferentes.
“Tarot of the Bohemians Part II” inicia com “Death”, a carta que significa transformação, encerramento de ciclos e recomeço, se mostra perfeita para essa nova fase, com certeza tendo significado especial para Ricardo. Uma canção de andamento lento, guitarras carregadas de peso e vocais guturais, nos conduz a uma imersão recheada de melodias sombrias, por vezes desesperadoras e caóticas, atmosfera essa que permeia as primeiras 4 faixas do álbum.
“Temperance”, a carta do equilíbrio e harmonia, traz uma atmosfera Gothic/Doom envolvente, com seu andamento sereno e belas melodias sombrias nas guitarras. Já “The Devil”, representante dos desejos materiais, inicia tempestuosa e com andamento mais veloz, com a bateria rápida, quebrada e orgânica. Mescla riff melodiosos e agressivos, que se completam com as camadas vocais, aqui com apoio de vozes femininas.
“The Lightning Struck Tower”, a representação das mudanças repentinas e quebra de ilusões, também traz um ritmo mais frenético, iniciando com double-bass na bateria e o baixo pulsante, para em seguida serem acompanhadas por riffs urgentes e destacando a bateria intrincada. A faixa traz mudanças de atmosfera, com solos melodiosos, até finalizar com muito peso e agressividade.
Esperança, inspiração e fé no futuro, é o que representa a estrela no Tarô, e “Stars” envolve desde o início com suas melodias cativantes, andamento dinâmico e refrão marcante. Se destacam também os vocais femininos, em uma faixa de sonoridade predominantemente limpa e melodiosa, e com atmosfera mais leve.
“The Moon”, que nas cartas do tarô representa a intuição aguçada e o inconsciente, traz uma atmosfera semelhante à sua antecessora, porém ainda mais melodiosa, repleta de melodias cativantes e refrão memorável. A atmosfera Gothic Rock e o dueto de vocal feminino e masculino se destacam.
Vitalidade, sucesso e clareza, alguns dos elementos que a carta sol representa, e “The Sun” traz um manifesto em forma de uma balada Gothic/Metal, de vocais quase sussurrados de Ricardo, tendo no refrãos o contraponto de vocais femininos. De ritmo lento e envolvente, a canção é entrecortada por momentos límpidos e melodias cativantes da guitarra.
“The Judgement”, representação do despertar e auto perdão, surge em uma faixa que novamente o peso predomina, e nos faz transitar por caminhos sinuosos, embora alterne com alguns momentos mais melodiosos. Os vocais guturais se contrapõem com um coro de vozes de crianças no refrão.
Um salto no desconhecido, um dos significados do “tolo” do tarô, e chegamos a ela, “The Fool”, que inicia com violão acústico e a voz sussurrada e grave de Ricardo. A música traz elementos de Classic Rock ao Gothic/Metal melodioso que a permeia.
As melodias ao violão vão entrecortando os riffs de guitarra, o refrão é marcante e provavelmente o mais melodioso do álbum, tendo novamente duetos de vozes masculinas e femininas. Destaque também para o uso de slide e solos que valorizam a simplicidade e melodias tocantes.
Fechando a obra, temos a bela e dinâmica “The World”, a carta que significa realização e conclusão de ciclos. Inicia intensa, como recomeços, e traz peso, melodia e uma atmosfera revitalizadora.
Com seu andamento mais acelerado, destaca novamente o excelente trabalho da bateria. As melodias no refrão se insinuam ao mesmo tempo suavemente melancólicas e cativantes, onde mais uma vez a voz grave e introspectiva de Ricardo faz contraponto com vocais femininos.
Um belo “grand finale”, onde o refrão ficará ecoando na sua mente: "...I'll be There, Sooner or Later".
Fazer música enquanto questão artística, essa frase ecoou na minha mente, e a uso novamente para encerrar esta matéria, pois condiz muito bem com a história do Heavenwood e de Ricardo Dias, que, felizmente, entrega mais um grande álbum, uma viagem Dark/Gothic Metal carregada de emoções e musicalmente intensa e variada, trazendo aquela aura anos 90 dos melhores momentos do estilo, porém renovada.
Com certeza um trabalho muito significativo para Ricardo, face a todos os acontecimentos que antecederam a criação e finalização da saga iniciada uma década atrás.
E agora, o que reserva o futuro para os Heavenwood? Talvez as cartas tenham a resposta.

Heavenwood: A New Beginning and the Final Part of the "Tarot of the Bohemians" Saga
Before we begin discussing this new Heavenwood album, it's good to give a brief history for those unfamiliar with the band. The Portuguese group began its activities in the early 90s, still under the name Disgorged, releasing two demos, works that caught the attention of Massacre Records.
They made their debut on the German label in 1996 with the album "Diva," already renamed Heavenwood (taken from the title of a song from their first demo, "Judith Heavenwood"), as the old name no longer seemed adequate to the band's sonic evolution, which was becoming darker and more melodic.
With "Diva" (96), Heavenwood broke boundaries and became the first Portuguese Metal band to have material distributed in Japan as well.
With "Swallow" (98), Heavenwood further expanded its melodic and dark sound, and also its name on the world stage, becoming the first Portuguese Metal band to play at Wacken. It's worth nothing that Kai Hansen and Liv Kristine were featured as guests on the album.
Despite a, let's say, slowdown in activities, mainly touring, Heavenwood continued releasing albums that always sought new challenges and had the desire to make music and art above all. Then came "Redemption" (2008) and the orchestral "Abyss Masterpiece" (2011), inspired by the work of the Portuguese poet Marquesa de Alorna, and in 2016 they presented what is probably their most daring work, the first of two parts of "Tarot of the Bohemians".
Inspired lyrically by the words of Gérard Anaclet Vincent Encausse (July 13, 1865 – October 25, 1916), whose esoteric pseudonyms were Papus and Tau Vincent, a French physician, hypnotist, and popularizer of occultism, and founder of the modern Martinist Order, Heavenwood delivered a thought-provoking work, covered in inspired layers both musically and lyrically, transporting the listener through a dense, heavy, melodic, and reflective atmosphere.
In 2022, Heavenwood's mentor and creative mind, Ricardo Dias, suffered a near-fatal accident, and these personal struggles, coupled with lineup changes, cast doubt on the band's continuity and, consequently, the completion of the work.
But thankfully, ten years after its first part, "Tarot of the Bohemians Part II" finally had its official release on June 12, 2026, via Mighty Music.
These are 10 songs, which complete the work that addresses the 22 major arcana of the tarot, and also mark a new phase, with a more individual vision from Ricardo Dias, who began producing the album in 2024.

Ricardo was responsible for recording all the instruments, in addition to his vocals, except for the drums, recorded by Eduardo Sinatra. The beautiful and mysterious cover art was conceived by graphic artist Naya Kotko.
In this explored universe, each listener will certainly have their own interpretation and will be touched by the music and atmosphere in different ways.
“Tarot of the Bohemians Part II” begins with “Death,” the card that signifies transformation, the closing of cycles and a new beginning, proving perfect for this new phase, certainly having special meaning for Ricardo. A slow-paced song, with heavy guitars and guttural vocals, leads us to an immersion filled with dark, sometimes desperate and chaotic melodies, an atmosphere that permeates the first 4 tracks of the album.
"Temperance," the card of balance and harmony, brings an immersive Gothic/Doom atmosphere, with its serene tempo and beautiful, dark guitar melodies. "The Devil," representing material desires, begins tempestuously and with a faster tempo, featuring fast, broken, and organic drumming. It blends melodic and aggressive riffs, complemented by vocal layers, here with the support of female voices.
"The Lightning Struck Tower," representing sudden changes and the shattering of illusions, also has a more frenetic rhythm, starting with double-bass drumming and a pulsating bass line, followed by urgent riffs and highlighting the intricate drumming. The track features changes in atmosphere, with melodic solos, before ending with great weight and aggression.
Hope, inspiration, and faith in the future are what the star in the Tarot represents, and "Stars" captivates from the start with its catchy melodies, dynamic tempo, and memorable chorus. The female vocals also stand out, in a track with a predominantly clean and melodious sound, and a lighter atmosphere.
“The Moon”, which in tarot cards represents keen intuition and the unconscious, has a similar atmosphere to its predecessor, but even more melodious, full of captivating melodies and a memorable chorus. The Gothic Rock atmosphere and the duet of female and male vocals stand out.
Vitality, success and clarity, some of the elements that the Sun card represents, and “The Sun” brings a manifesto in the form of a Gothic/Metal ballad, with Ricardo's almost whispered vocals, having the female vocals as a counterpoint in the choruses. [The text abruptly ends here, so the rhythm is incomplete.]
Slow and captivating, the song is interspersed with clear moments and engaging guitar melodies.
“The Judgement,” representing awakening and self-forgiveness, emerges in a track where heaviness again predominates, taking us on a winding journey, although alternating with some more melodic moments. The guttural vocals contrast with a chorus of children's voices in the refrain.
A leap into the unknown, one of the meanings of the “fool” in the tarot, and “The Fool” begins with acoustic guitar and Ricardo's whispered, hoarse voice. The music brings elements of Classic Rock to the melodic Gothic/Metal that permeates it. The acoustic guitar melodies interweave the guitar riffs, the chorus is striking and probably the most melodic on the album, again featuring duets of male and female voices. Also noteworthy is the use of slide guitar and solos that emphasize simplicity and touching melodies.
Closing the album, we have the beautiful and dynamic “The World,” the card that signifies fulfillment and the completion of cycles. It begins intensely, like a new beginning, and brings weight, melody, and a revitalizing atmosphere.
With its faster tempo, it once again highlights the excellent work of the drums. The melodies in the chorus are simultaneously subtly melancholic and captivating, where once again Ricardo's deep and introspective voice contrasts with female vocals. A beautiful “grand finale.”
Making music as an artistic endeavor—this phrase echoed in my mind, and I use it again to conclude this article, as it fits very well with the story of Heavenwood and Ricardo Dias, who, thankfully, delivers another great album of Dark/Gothic Metal, bringing back that 90s aura from the best moments of the style, but renewed
,full of emotions and musically intense, and certainly very significant for him, considering all the events that preceded the creation and completion of the final part of the saga that began a decade ago.
And now, what does the future hold for Heavenwood? Perhaps the cards have the answer.
