Entrevista - Maestra: Heavy Metal Virtuoso, Orgânico e Sem Barreiras

 O Maestra é uma recém formada banda, contando com um time de músicos de alta capacidade, alguns já com larga experiência no cenário, tendo até trabalhado com artistas do exterior.
O núcleo da banda já estava praticamente formado, pois vários dos músicos gravaram o mais recente álbum do Eterna, "Spiritus Dei", e, em seguida, completando a formação, sairiam em turnê de divulgação desse trabalho, porém devido a alguns problemas, que o vocalista Neno Fernando também relata nesta entrevista, isso não ocorreu, começando então, a história do Maestra.

RtM: Como surgiu a ideia de formar a “Maestra” e como vocês chegaram aos nomes que consideravam ideais para o grupo? Diga-se de passagem, um time de músicos de alta qualidade
Neno Fernando: Tudo ocorreu naturalmente, algo que parece já estava preparado para nós, apenas aguardando o momento certo e o momento chegou.

Tudo ocorreu em uma noite fria do mês de Outubro na casa do Cardillo, quando minha esposa deu o nome, eu já havia pensando em algo parecido tipo “MAESTRIA” mas do nada ela disse: MAESTRA, na hora refletimos e sentimos um nome com força e poder, como estávamos procurando, um nome curto, forte e com maestria, que tivesse a ver com nossa profissão de professores também.

Sobre o Line up , a banda já estava praticamente formada antes mesmo de se tornar Maestra, pois seria a banda que iniciaria a Turnê oficial do álbum "Spiritus Dei", do Eterna, mas infelizmente, ou felizmente, fomos impedidos de continuar o trabalho, sem nenhuma explicação, simplesmente nos impediram de trabalhar. Agora o foco é 100% no MAESTRA.

RtM: A questão com o Eterna, pelo que entendi,  tem alguém que detêm os direitos do nome e resolveu não abrir mão agora, impedindo da nova formação continuar? Problemas contratuais?

Neno Fernando: Quase isso. Na verdade a pessoa que criou o nome, passou-nos o direito de usar o nome, mas passando um mês, simplesmente do nada e sem explicação alguma, resolveu que não deveríamos seguir com nome.

RtM: E vocês chegaram a alguma conclusão?

Neno Fernando: Pelo que percebi ele irá voltar a formação antiga, a primeira formação da banda, isso já era de se esperar vindo de alguns ex-integrantes antigos, pois até fomos alertados que ao sair o disco “Spiritus Dei” os membros antigos poderiam começar a dar a cartada deles, pois enquanto a  banda não lançava nada novo, estavam em silêncio, eles estavam quietos, foi só lançarmos o novo disco, pronto, aconteceram essas coisas.

RtM: Você deve ter ficado bem surpreso e decepcionado?

Neno Fernando: Fiz o que fiz por que gostava de trabalhar na banda, sempre fizermos o que deveríamos fazer para o bem da banda e do público, a banda estava acabada quando entrei, eles queriam acabar, e eu acredito que dei um sangue novo. Engraçado que quando a banda precisou alguns dos ex-integrantes simplesmente viraram a cara para o Eterna, isso pessoas ligadas à banda me falaram várias vezes, e quando eles percebem que a banda estava voltando e com força, eles começaram vir atrás. 

Realmente não consigo entender, me senti usado mesmo, produzi o álbum no meu estúdio, fiz o disco inteiro praticamente sozinho. Mas, infelizmente acontece uma dessas, uma decepção sem tamanho, realmente foi algo que nos deixou muito decepcionados, éramos amigos, durante 5 anos fomos como irmãos, mas infelizmente eu e o Zé (José Cardillo) ficamos na mão de repente. Mas Deus nos deu o Maestra, na verdade, como falei antes, esse era o time do Eterna que sairia em tour, iríamos detonar, tocar muito e já estávamos com 8 músicas novas para o próximo álbum, deixa eles... Seguimos em frente.
Agradeço demais o carinho e apoio de todo público do Eterna nesses cinco anos, mas Eterna pra mim é página virada.

RtM: Certo Neno, obrigado pelas informações aos fãs, e aguardemos o outro lado também se manifestar. Seguindo em frente, conte pra gente também a respeito do conceito musical do Maestra, além do conceito lírico e das principais diferenças desta para outras bandas que vocês já participaram, como Eterna, por exemplo, que lançou recentemente o   “Spiritus Dei”.

Cardillo: O Spiritus Dei foi uma álbum voltado e focado exclusivamente para o público cristão (católico), por isso, houve certas restrições na parte de composição instrumental, assim como no idioma, que foi  direcionado ao português.

 Já no Maestra, o objetivo é colocar em prática ideias que não pudemos utilizar em outros trabalhos, e abordar um estilo que particularmente gostamos muito, que é o Heavy Metal mais voltado para o virtuosismo e músicas elaboradas, utilizando todos os recursos e técnicas que o estilo exige.

Neno Fernando: No Maestra tudo ocorre como eu sempre sonhei em uma banda, temos a liberdade de experimentar, testar, isso ou aquilo, sem medo algum, sem dever nada a ninguém que por algumas vezes bate de frente com suas opiniões e fundamentos.

No Maestra, nós compomos a banda inteira, todos dão idéias e sugestões, temos isso, maturidade, aprendemos muito com o tempo, a vida nos ensina sempre, por isso é importante cairmos para levantarmos mais fortes.

Falaremos muito sobre o nosso cotidiano em nossas letras, nosso dia a dia, a loucura que passamos ao morarmos em uma cidade gigante como São Paulo, falaremos sobre ações e atitude da raça humana, das mudanças de temperamentos que as pessoas têm, da falsidade do Homem e iremos passar muita coisa positiva também, como auto ajuda, espiritualidade e positivismo, ou seja, iremos abranger todo os elementos, Terra, Água e Fogo.

RtM: Ainda sobre o trabalho no Eterna, vocês já nos falaram o porquê de priorizar as letras em português, tendo apenas duas em inglês. No Maestra vocês pretendem direcionar para o inglês ou nas duas línguas, dependendo do feeling de vocês?

Cardillo : Devido ao gênero que seguiremos, utilizaremos a língua inglesa, pois é a que melhor se encaixa nos padrões do estilo.

Neno Fernando: Sim optamos por fazer o disco todo em inglês, possivelmente no futuro, lançaremos 1 ou 2 músicas em inglês, mas o foco agora é totalmente em inglês, pois pretendemos lançar o Maestra em outros países. Nossos objetivos são esses, queremos mostrar todo o trabalho da banda, tanto no Brasil, Europa, Japão e se der USA.

RtM: Falando nesse grande grupo de músicos, vem também uma grande responsabilidade pela expectativa que se cria, pela qualidade de cada um dos envolvidos. Como vocês estão se sentindo nesse início, nas composições que estão nascendo e o que o público pode esperar do Maestra?

Neno Fernando: A palavra é : Empolgados, estamos muito empolgados com o resultado, com certeza, o time foi escolhido a dedo e a sonoridade está tomando um rumo que realmente não esperávamos estamos realmente satisfeitos com o Maestra, estamos fazendo exatamente aquilo que sempre gostaríamos de fazer.

Cardillo: Estamos nos sentindo muito felizes e focados. Com a consciência da responsabilidade de realizar um grande trabalho. Mas também respeitando o andamento natural das coisas, sem pressão e com o maior cuidado possível, para a criação de uma grande obra.

RtM: A produção está sendo feita pela própria Banda?

Neno Fernando: Sim, a produção esta sendo feita por mim, como foi feito o álbum "Spiritus Dei" do Eterna, que foi lançado no meio deste ano.

Tenho um estúdio, o baterista Fabiano Manhas também, nós preparamos as guias, mandamos para ele, ele grava todas as bateras, edita e manda para mim, dai damos continuidade nas gravações.

Tudo soa muito orgânico e musical.

RtM: E vocês se deram um tipo de prazo para ter material suficiente? Vocês já tinham composições ou ideias de músicas antes de anunciar a criação da banda e fechar a formação?

Neno Fernando: Bom, temos um prazo inicial, mas sabemos que se tratando de gravação e produção sempre damos aquela esticadinha (risos), Natural mesmo, mas tudo está acontecendo muito rápido com o Maestra, creio que no primeiro semestre estaremos lançando o disco sim, como é de nosso prazo.

Sobre as músicas, temos algumas músicas que foram descartadas no Eterna, são músicas excelentes e com certeza iremos usá-las nesse novo disco do Maestra.

Cardillo: Temos um foco inicial de lançarmos um single ainda este ano, e o álbum debut em 2015, de preferência, no primeiro semestre, mas tudo dependerá do andamento natural das atividades.

Temos 8 músicas já compostas, mas não significa que todas serão utilizadas, pois dependerá da sonoridade do álbum. Precisamos de músicas que componham um álbum denso, técnico, marcante e uniforme.

RtM: E, claro, apesar de todos os envolvidos já terem um bom reconhecimento no cenário musical, certamente muitos vão ter recém o primeiro contato com o Maestra e o trabalhos de vocês, e esta entrevista também está sendo disponibilizada em inglês, para os leitores do Road de outros países, gostaríamos que você e o José Cardillo falassem sobre o trabalho de vocês, quando iniciaram na música, influências e inspirações?

Neno Fernando: Eu iniciei na música, quando eu tinha 6 anos de idade, no dia em que minha irmã me deu o primeiro violão, logo em seguida minha mãe me colocou em um conservatório de música, estudei poucos meses e só voltei a estudar música quando eu tinha 13 anos, ai já iniciei canto, estudei canto por 8 anos e comecei então a jornada como professor de técnicas vocais onde ministro aulas de canto por quase 20 anos.

Sempre gostei de Michael Kiske, James Labrie, Rush, Queen, Queensryche, Skid Row e por ai vai, nunca parei de pesquisar sobre minha voz e evoluir a minha musicalidade, sempre tive o apoio dos meus pais, e devo muito à eles.

Comecei meu trabalho profissional com bandas em 1999, cantando em bandas como Abstract Shadows, Portrait e Eterna.

Cardillo: Comecei minhas atividades em 1981, aos 7 anos de idade, no piano erudito. Meu primeiro contato com o teclado com o teclado foi aos 10 anos, depois que ouvi o álbum “1984”, do Van Halen, então recém-lançado. A partir daí, passei a estudar os 2 instrumentos separadamente.
Meu primeiro show foi em 1987, aos 13 anos de idade, com uma banda de colegas de escola.
A partir daí não parei mais. Realizei trabalhos com bandas importantes da cena nacional, como o Holy Sagga, o Abstract Shadows e o Eterna; e participei de projetos importantes, como o William´s Shakespeare Hamlet, Soulspell Parte I, etc.

Toquei também com artistas internacionais, como Roland Grapow e Germán Pascual.

Além das minhas atividades musicais, sou também professor de piano erudito, popular, teclado e teoria musical, com muitos alunos e ex-alunos atuantes na cena.

Minhas principais influências são bandas clássicas de Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, AOR, Prog-Metal, Neo-Clássica; e artistas Pop Americanos e Europeus, principalmente das décadas de 70 e 80.

RtM: Continuando a conversa a respeito dos músicos envolvidos, gostaria que vocês comentassem primeiro sobre o Carlos Kippes (guitarrista), que toca no tributo ao Rainbow, com certeza vai trazer um grande trabalho de guitarras, unindo a parte mais clássica e uma abordagem mais moderna, acredito eu, e isso mostra também que vocês se preocuparam em escolher detalhadamente os envolvidos, abrindo um grande leque de possibilidades.

Cardillo: Exatamente. O Kippes trabalha comigo no Rainbow Tribute Brazil e é professor de guitarra, além de ser aluno de outro grande nome na cena nacional, o Joe Moghrabi.

 É um músico extremamente comprometido, esforçado e profissional, fora conhecer bastante a cena nacional e muito fácil de se trabalhar. Além disso um grande amigo.

Neno Fernando: O Carlos Kippes, será a primeira vez que iremos trabalhar juntos, sei que é uma excelente pessoa e excelente musico, tenho certeza que ele veio para somar.

RtM: A “cozinha”, como se diz no meio musical, é formada pelo Fábio Manhas, que já é um músico com grande reconhecimento, e no baixo, Vagner Souza, que é mais um grande talento no cenário. Poderia falar um pouco mais dessa dupla?

Cardillo: O Fabiano Manhas é um grande baterista nacional e já, um grande amigo. Pelo pouco tempo de trabalho juntos, já deu pra perceber que veio pra somar e ser fundamental para o projeto, fora ser uma pessoa, que particularmente, possui uma ótica e direcionamento de serviço muito parecida com a minha, aonde além da preocupação de realizar grandes trabalhos, também se preocupa com a área do ensino musical, que é muito nobre.

O baixista Vágner Souza também é um grande amigo e músico. Conheço o trabalho dele já há um certo tempo, mas não havíamos trabalhado juntos até o álbum "Spiritus Dei", do Eterna, onde gravou a música “Turning Back”. Após isso, ele trabalhou comigo na banda Eterna. Um músico fantástico e incrivelmente técnico e nos damos muito bem nos palcos. Com certeza formará ao lado do Fabiano uma “fantástica cozinha”.

Neno Fernando: O Vagner Souza, eu já conheço um bom tempo, eu produzi o disco da outra banda de Ashton Bridge, dei aulas de canto para ele por um tempo, com certeza é um baixista excelente, uma técnica muito apurada, uma pegada precisa além de fazer backin vocals.

O Fabiano Manhas dispensa comentários, quem é do ramo, já conhece a história desse grande músico, e pra nós é uma honra tê-lo conosco.

RtM: E quando teremos uma amostra do trabalho do Maestra?

Neno Fernando: Em Dezembro deste ano , precisamente no Natal, estaremos lançando uma amostra do trabalho, estamos a todo vapor nesse single para lançarmos no Natal e o disco full no primeiro semestre de 2015.

RtM: Muito obrigado pela sua atenção, ficamos no aguardo então dos próximos passos do Maestra, e esperamos em breve fazer nova entrevista, e falando aqui do álbum de estreia também! Fica o espaço para sua mensagem final aos leitores!

Neno Fernando: Eu agradeço demais pela força, estamos muito felizes com o Maestra, pois é uma banda criada na união, na amizade verdadeira, na vontade de tocar, de compor, de gravar e fazer uma história, a vida é tão curta né? Precisamos produzir, deixar algo escrito na história do Heavy Metal, mesmo que pequena, mas a história estará ali e ninguém irá tirar isso de nós.

Interview: Maestra: Brazilian Virtuous and Organic Heavy Metal Music, Without Barriers

Maestra is a newly formed band from Brazil, with a team of musicians with high capacity, already with extensive experience in the scenario, and even worked with artists from other countries.

The line-up of the band was practically formed because several of the musicians recorded the latest album of brazilian Heavy/Hard  band Eterna, "Spiritus Dei", and then completing the team, they was ready to go on tour to support this work, but due to some problems, that vocalist Neno Fernando also told to us in this interview, it has not happened, then starting the history of Maestra.

RtM: How did the idea of forming the "Maestra" came about and how you came to the names they considered ideal for the group? By the way, a team of high quality musicians!

Neno Fernando: It occurred naturally, something that was already seems prepared for us, just waiting for the right moment and the moment has come!

Everything happened on a cold night in October at the home of Cardillo, when my wife gave the name, I was already thinking about something like "MAESTRIA", but, from nowhere, she said: "MAESTRA!". About a time we reflect and feel a name with strength and power, as we were looking for a short, strong and masterfully name, that had a link with our profession of teachers also.

About Line up, the band was practically formed even before becoming Maestra, as would the band that would start the official tour of the Eterna's album "Spiritus Dei",  but unfortunately, or fortunately, we were unable to continue work, without explanation, simply prevented us from working. Now the focus is 100% on MAESTRA.

RtM: The issue with the Eterna, from what I understand, was happened because someone that have rights above the name, decided to step back and not to assign the rights? Contractual problems?

Neno Fernando: Almost that. Actually the person who created the name, passed us the right to use the name because he said publicly that he was out of the band, but spending a month, just out of nowhere and without any explanation, he decided we should not go with the name .

RtM: And you reached any conclusions?

Neno Fernando: From what I understand he will go back to the old line-up, the first incarnation of the band, this was to be expected coming from former members, seeing he warned me soon the album "Spiritus Dei" was released, former members would start giving their trump card, because while the band had not released anything new, they were silent, they were quiet, and just when the new album was ready, they started all this thing.

RtM: You must have been very surprised and disappointed?

Neno Fernando: Never won any money with the Eterna, did what I did because i liked to work in the band, when we do what we do for the sake of the band and the audience, the band was finished when I joined, they wanted to end up, and I believe I gave a new blood. Funny that when the band needed, some ex-members of Eterna simply turned their face to the Band, people told me several times, and when they realize that the band was coming again and with strength, they started coming back.

Really can not understand, I felt even used, produced the album in my studio, I made the entire disc almost alone, never made money with the Eterna. But unfortunately it gives one such a size without disappointment, really was something that left us very disappointed, we were friends for 5 years we were like brothers, but unfortunately some people takes attitude like that and let me and Jose (Jose Cardillo) without explanations. But God gave us "Maestra", in fact, as I said before, this was the team that the Eterna would go on tour, we would set off, and we were playing a lot, and we already had 8 new songs for the next album, let them ... we move on .

RtM: Neno Okay, thanks for the information to fans, and we wait the other side also manifest. Moving on, tell to us also about the musical concept of Maestra, beyond the lyrical concept and the main differences of this for other bands that you have participated, such as Eternal, for example, recently launched "Spiritus Dei".

Cardillo: The Spiritus Dei was one album oriented and focused exclusively for public Christian (Catholic), so there were certain restrictions on the instrumental composition, as well as the language, which was directed to the Portuguese.

The Maestra goal is to put into practice ideas that could not be used in other jobs, and tackle a style that particularly liked a lot, which is the Heavy Metal more focused on virtuosity and elaborate songs, using all the resources and techniques that style requires.

Neno Fernando: In Maestra everything happens as I always dreamed of a band, we have the freedom to experiment, test, this or that, without any fear, without owing anything to anyone by that sometimes clashes with your opinions and foundations.

In Maestra, we compose the entire band, all give ideas and suggestions, we have it, maturity, learned a lot over time, life teaches us always, so it's important we fall to rise up stronger.

We'll talk a lot about our daily lives in our lyrics, our day to day madness that we felt in a giant city like São Paulo, talk about actions and attitude of the human race, the changes of temperaments that people have, the falsity of man and we will spend a lot of positive things as well, like self help, spirituality and positivism, yes, we will cover all the elements, Earth, Water and Fire.

RtM: Still talking a little more about the band Eterna, you have already told us why prioritize the lyrics in Portuguese, with only two songs in English. In Maestra you intend to drive the English or in both languages, depending on the feeling of you?

Cardillo: Due to the genre that follow, we use the English language as it is the one that best fits the style patterns.

Neno Fernando: Yes we chose to do the whole album in English, possibly in the future, we will launch one or two songs in English, but the focus is now entirely in English, because we intend to launch Maestra in other countries. Our goals are the ones we want to show all the work of the band, both in Brazil, Europe, Japan and USA.

  

RtM: Speaking this great group of musicians, also comes great responsibility by the expectation that creates the quality of everyone involved. How are you feeling at this early in the compositions are being born and what the public can expect from  Maestra?

Neno Fernando: The word is: Thrilled, we're thrilled with the result, of course, the team was handpicked and loudness are taking a course that does not really expected we are really pleased with the Maestra, we are doing exactly what we would always want to do.

Cardillo: We are feeling very happy and focused. With the awareness of the responsibility of performing a great job. But also respecting the natural course of things, without pressure and with the greatest possible care to the creation of a great work.

RtM: The production is being done by the band itself?

Neno Fernando: Yes, the production is being done by me, as was done album "Spiritus Dei" ( Eterna), which was released in the middle of this year.

I have a studio drummer, Fabiano Manhas Also, we have prepared the guides, we sent to him, he writes all the drummers, edit and send to me, hence we continue on the recordings.

It all sounds very organic and musical.

RtM: And you gave a kind of time to have enough material? You've had ideas of songs or compositions before announcing the creation of the band?

Neno Fernando: Well, we have an initial term, but we know that when it comes to recording and production always takes more time that we want (laughs), Natural same, but everything is happening too fast with the Maestra, I think in the first half of 2015 we will be releasing the record rather. As is our deadline.

About the songs, we have some songs that were rejected in Eterna, are excellent songs and for sure we will use them in Maestra.

Cardillo: We have an initial focus to launch a single later this year, and the debut album in 2015, preferably in the first half, but it all depends on the natural progress of activities.

We have 8 songs ever written, but it does not mean that all will be used, as they depend on the sound of the album. We need songs that comprise a dense, technical, striking and consistent album.

RtM: And, of course, though all involved have had good recognition in the music scene here in Brazil, surely many will be newly first contact with the Maestra and the work of you, and this interview is also being made available in English for Road to Metal readers from other countries, we want you and your José Cardillo talk about your work, when you started in music, influences and inspirations?

Neno Fernando: I started in music when I was 6 years old, on the day that my sister gave me my first guitar, soon after my mother put me in a music conservatory, studied only a few months and went back to study music when I was 13, ai already started singing, I studied singing for 8 years then started the journey as a teacher of vocal techniques which minister singing lessons for almost 20 years.

I always liked Michael Kiske, James Labrie, Rush, Queen, Queensryche, Skid Row and so on, never stopped researching about my voice and develop my musicianship, I always had the support of my parents, and I owe much to them.

I began my professional work with bands in 1999, singing in bands like Shadows Abstract, Portrait and Eterna.

Cardillo: I started my activities in 1981, after 7 years of age in classical piano. My first contact with the keyboard with the keyboard was at age 10, after listening to the album "1984", Van Halen, then recently released. From there, I started to study the two instruments separately.

My first show was in 1987 at 13 years of age, with a band of schoolmates.

Since then I never stopped. Works realized with important bands of the national scene, as the Holy Sagga the Abstract Shadows and the Eterna; and participated in important projects, such as William's Shakespeare's Hamlet, Soulspell Part I, etc.

I also played with international artists such as Roland Grapow and Germán Pascual.

In addition to my musical activities, I am also a professor of classical piano, folk, keyboard and music theory, with many students and active alumni in the scene.

My main influences are classic bands of Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, AOR, Prog-Metal, Neo-Classical; Pop and American and European artists, mainly from the 70s and 80s.

RtM: Continuing the conversation about the musicians involved, I'd like you to comment first on Carlos Kippes (guitarist), who plays in a Rainbow's tribute band, will surely bring great guitar work, uniting the most classic part and an approach more modern, I believe, and it also shows that you bother to choose the detail involved, opening up a wide range of possibilities.

Cardillo: Exactly. The Kippes works with me at Rainbow Tribute Brazil and is a guitar teacher, besides being a student of another big name on the national scene, Joe Moghrabi.

He is an extremely committed, hardworking and professional enough to know off the national scene and very easy to work musician. Also a great friend.

Neno Fernando: Carlos Kippes, will be the first time that we work together, I know that is a great person and great musician, I'm sure he came to add up.

RtM: The "kitchen" as they say in the music is composed by Fabiano Manhas, who is now a musician with great recognition, and on bass, Vagner Souza, who is another great talent on the  brazilian scene. Could you talk a little bit more of this double?

Cardillo: Fabiano Manhas is a major and great drummer, and also a great friend.
