Entrevista - Demon: Lenda Viva do Metal Britânico

O Demon é uma daquelas bandas que deveria ter um reconhecimento muito maior, sendo uma das formações mais cultuadas e queridas daquela época áurea do início dos anos 80, onde, mais precisamente na Inglaterra, tivemos o nascimento do movimento que ficou conhecido como a "New Wave Of British Heavy Metal", em que bandas como Iron Maiden, Saxon, Def Leppard, foram algumas das mais bem sucedidas, ultrapassando barreiras e atingindo um público mais amplo, seguidas de outras, que se não alçaram o mesmo sucesso comercial, de forma alguma pode-se dizer que não tenham uma grande importância na história, ocupando um lugar de destaque nos corações Headbangers. Seguindo esse pensamento, podemos citar Diamond Head, Samson, Raven, Tygers of Pan Tang, Angelwitch, e, claro, o Demon. Desde o início, com dois álbuns muito bons e repletos de clássicos, o Demon, além da música, também chamava atenção pelo visual das capas, as performances ao vivo e até o próprio nome, que dava uma ideia de algo místico e sobrenatural. 

Mas a banda não se restringiu à fórmula desses primeiros anos, sempre acrescentando coisas novas à sua sonoridade.

Mas o certo é que o seu forte, e a preferência dos fãs, é aquela base sonora desses primeiros álbuns, e, agora, ainda em plena divulgação de seu mais recente álbum, "Unbroken", isso se comprova, pois o disco, que está sendo aclamado como um dos melhores lançamentos da banda no últimos 20 anos,  traz de volta muitos daqueles elementos, ressaltando também que desde seu retorno em 1998, vem lançando bons álbuns. 

Chega de papo e vamos ao que interessa, conversamos com Dave Hill, vocalista e fundador da banda, durante uma pausa entre os compromissos do Demon (inclusive no Sweden Rock), para falar sobre "Unbroken" e um pouco de história!

RtM: Para começar, gostaria que você comentasse o título e capa do novo álbum, "Unbroken", onde o logotipo da banda aparece cercado por correntes.

Dave Hill: Simboliza, que depois de 30 anos, a banda ainda continua intacta, continua forte!!

RtM: O "Demon"  sempre apresentou diferenças, elementos novos a cada álbum, como o Hard/Heavy de  "Night of the Demon", o progressivo e conceitual "The Plague". Eu acho que nestes dois últimos álbuns, a banda tem muito dos elementos que mais agradam seus fãs, o que significa riffs e refrões fortes, aquele Hard/Heavy, os climas do teclado e as letras (a abertura com "Prey" lembrou-me de canções como "Dont ' Break The Circle", inclusive por causa da intro), letras que se deslocam entre a realidade e a ficção. Você concorda?

DH: Sentimos que “Unbroken” traz de volta os grandes hinos do rock clássico, letras mais comerciais e memoráveis riffs ​​Heavy Rock.

RtM:  "Unbroken" tem sido muito bem recebido, com muitos comentários positivos! Você está satisfeito com os resultados e comentários até agora?

DH: “Unbroken” foi recebido com ótimas críticas em todos os países em que foi lançado até agora. E até mesmo em algumas resenhas disseram que é o melhor álbum da banda em 20 anos!

RtM: "Fill Your Head With Rock" e "Still Believe" falam sobre o estilo de música que amamos, a "Fill Your Head...", você fala sobre o Sweden Rock, onde a banda se apresentou novamente este ano, enquanto "Still Believe" parece até autobiográfica! Você poderia falar um pouco mais sobre essas duas músicas?

DH: "Fill Your Head With Rock"  é a história dos dias que passamos no Sweden Rock, que é talvez um dos maiores festivais de rock clássico que já toquei, e por isso escrevi sobre a nossa experiência. Eu acho que “Still Believe” é sobre ainda acreditar,  depois de 30 anos com uma banda, que o rock clássico é uma das grandes formas de arte musicais e que se torna mais forte a cada ano.

RtM: Recentemente, a banda sofreu novas mudanças na formação, mas vem mantendo um núcleo, e parece que essas mudanças não tem sido prejudiciais.

DH: Ao longo dos anos o Demon teve muitas mudanças, mas eu sempre gostei de trabalhar com outras pessoas, e juntas, as minhas ideias e as deles, desenvolvem-se em novas idéias para a banda, e eu sinto , por experiência própria, que temos conseguido isso.

RtM: Continuando, eu gostaria de falar também sobre Andy Dale, que dedicou vários anos de "Demon", e deixou a banda há pouco tempo e, claro, sobre David Cotterill, que está na banda desde 2007.

DH: Andy já trabalhou com a gente tanto diretamente, como indiretamente, ao longo dos últimos 20 anos, mas, recentemente, por causa de seus negócios e compromissos familiares, ele foi incapaz de continuar com a gente. Dave Cotterill tem estado conosco nos últimos 6 anos, e é um guitarrista excelente e uma parte muito importante do som do Demon.

RtM: Eu sei que pode ser complicado, mas você pode escolher suas músicas preferidas do novo álbum? Estou muito indeciso também! vários refrãos e riffs excelentes! Wow! Mas eu acredito que além da faixa-título, a trinca "Prey", "Wings of Steel" e "Still Believe" são as que mais estão agradando os fãs e, certamente, serão solicitadas nos shows!

DH: No momento estamos tocando nos shows "Unbroken", "Prey", "Fill Your Head With Rock", e "Still Believe", mas é difícil escolher alguma como favorita, eu gosto de todas elas.

RtM: Voltando um pouco ao passado, o álbum do Demon que mais ouvi foi "Unexpected Guest" e sempre quis perguntar-lhe sobre a foto da capa do álbum, e também de falar um pouco mais sobre minhas canções favoritas do álbum, "Don't Break The Circle ", que é um clássico! e "Have You Been Here Before", a qual, para mim, deve estar sempre em seu set list nos shows! heheh!

DH: A capa é, na verdade, o torso de um homem musculoso, mas há uma imagem holográfica que surge como uma face. "Don't Break The Circle" tornou-se um hino do Demon e está incluído em todos os Live Shows, e a faixa foi "coverizada" e gravada pelo Blind Guardian, fato que, estou certo, ajudou a espalhar a popularidade da música em todo o mundo, e "Have You Been...", é uma música que apresentamos regularmente ao longo do tempo em nossos shows ao vivo.

RtM: Após a morte de Mal Spooner, em 1984, muitos acreditavam que a banda poderia encerrar as atividades, a banda lançou "Heart of Our Time" (85), que teve críticas negativas, não sendo bem recebido. Certamente a perda de Mal Spooner afetou a banda. Fale sobre esse período complicado, a perda de Mal, e sobre este álbum. Lembrando que depois de tudo isso vocês lançaram dois ótimos álbuns, que receberam ótimas críticas, "Breakout" e "Taking the World By Storm".

DH: Após a triste perda de um grande amigo e co-escritor musical, a banda levou algum tempo para retomarmos o caminho e agir em conjunto novamente, mas em "Breakout", começamos a voltar ao ponto em que Mal e eu gostaríamos de estar. E em respeito a todo o esforço de Mal pela banda, seguimos em frente, como ele teria desejado.

RtM: Em 1992, a banda encerrou suas atividades, tornando-se um longo período fora da cena. Conte-nos sobre as razões dessa parada, e o que você fez durante o período em que a banda estava "adormecida", além, é claro, do seu álbum solo?

DH: Em 1992, decidimos fazer uma pausa de tocar e gravar como Demon, isso não foi um rompimento da banda, precisávamos de um tempo para se dedicar a outros projetos. Pode-se dizer que foi um merecido descanso.

RtM: Em 2001, a banda retornou com o excelente "Spaced Out Monkey", que trouxe uma roupagem mais moderna, gostaria que você falasse um pouco do retorno, o que te motivou a voltar com a banda, e fale um pouco sobre o referido álbum.

DH: Nós voltamos em 1998, para tocar algumas datas ao vivo na Europa, e começamos a escrever novo material, para, eventualmente, entrarmos em estúdio e gravar e nasceu "Spaced Out Monkey". A ideia era fazer um álbum de sonoridade mais moderna, coisa que o Demon sempre fez ao longo do tempo, e eu tenho muito orgulho desse álbum.

RtM: E a cena atual do Heavy Metal? Como você vê isso? Muito se fala que ícones como Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Purple, Ozzy e outros bandas/artistas tradicionais, estão ficando velhos, e pode ser que  não exista uma nova geração capaz de substituí-los na cena Heavy Metal, e conseguir conquistar o que eles conquistaram. O que você acha? Há muitas e muitas bandas novas, mas ...

DH: Eu acho que as fundações que foram estabelecidas por essas bandas, inspiraram e vão inspirar uma nova geração de bandas de Rock, que estou certo de que envolverão e carregarão a tocha do Classic Rock para o futuro, e espero vivam para manter o grande padrão estabelecido por aquelas bandas, incluindo-se aí o Demon.

RtM: A banda teve um hiato considerável entre seus lançamentos atuais (Spaced Out Monkey -2001; The Devil You Know-2005 e Unbroken-2012), entre eles a compilação "Time Has Come" e dois DVDs, vocês planejam gravar alguns shows, no Headbangers Open Air e Sweden para um lançamento em DVD, ou talvez algum box comemorativo dos 30 anos da banda? E um pedido: Não levem tanto tempo para lançar outro álbum! hehheheeh!

DH: Esperamos que os shows ao vivo que você mencionou possam ser gravados, juntamente com muitas gravações ao vivo que temos em nossa posse, estamos esperando, como você disse, lançar um box abrangente da carreira do Demon, em algum momento num futuro próximo.

RtM: E shows no Brasil ou na América do Sul? Você já recebeu alguma proposta? Pena que não temos aqui um festival como os que existem na Europa, o Brasil tem muitos fãs de Heavy Metal, alguns pequenos festivais estão crescendo, quem sabe um dia teremos algo grande! No ano passado, tínhamos a esperança com o "Metal Open Air" que acabou por ser um fracasso devido a alguns problemas e inexperiência dos organizadores.

DH: Chegamos a ser abordados em algumas ocasiões, por contatos na América do Sul, para fazer shows ao vivo, mas até o momento, como você sabe, não apareceram ofertas para o Brasil, mas espero que tudo mude nos próximos anos.

RtM: Bem, Dave, obrigado pelo seu tempo, por esta entrevista, pela música, aqui no Road to Metal temos grandes fãs da banda, e é um prazer estar fazendo esta entrevista, espero um dia conhecê-lo pessoalmente! Eu preciso que você autografe os meus álbuns do Demon!

DH: Só quero dizer que eu sinto muito essa entrevista não ter sido feita antes, mas obrigado por dedicar seu tempo e ser um fã de nossa música e espero que nos encontremos em algum momento no futuro, e eu gostaria de desejar tudo de bom aos nossos fãs no Brasil e América do Sul.

Interview - Demon: Living Legend of British Metal

The Demon is one of those bands that should have much greater recognition, one of the formations that most cherished and worshiped the golden era of the early '80s, where, more precisely in England, we had the birth of the movement that became known as the "New Wave of British Heavy Metal ", where bands like Iron Maiden, Saxon, Def Leppard and Motorhead were some of the most successful, overcoming barriers and reaching a wider audience, followed by others, which are not lifted the same commercial success, in no way can be said to have no great importance in history, occupying a prominent place in the Headbanger's hearts. Following this thought, we can cite Diamond Head, Samson, Raven, Tygers of Pan Tang, Angelwitch, and of course, Demon. From the beginning, with two very good albums and full of classics, the Demon, besides music, also called the visual attention of almum's covers, live performances and even its name, which gave an indication of something mystical and supernatural. But the band was not restricted to the formulation of those early years, always adding new things to your Hard / Heavy packed with memorable riffs and choruses.

But what is certain is that strong preference of fans always fell on the sound basis of these early albums, and now with their latest album, "Unbroken", this is proved because the disk is being acclaimed as one of the best releases of the band in the last 20 years.

Well, we talk a little bit with the founder member, Dave Hill, about "Unbroken", this actual moment of the banda and the classic rock, and a little of history! Check out:

RtM: To start this interview, I would like you to comment the title and cover of the new album, "Unbroken," where the band's logo appears surrounded by chains.

Dave Hill: This symbolizes after 30 years the band is unbroken, still strong!!!

RtM: The "Demon" has always been very different albums, such as NWOBHM's "Night of the Demon" and the progressive and conceptual  "The Plague". I think this last two albums, the band has more facets than pleasing their fans, meaning that Hard / Heavy riffs and choruses with striking, the climates of the keyboard and the lyrics (opening with "Prey" reminded me of songs like "Dont 'Break the Circle", including because of the intro), who move between reality and fiction. Do you agree? What do you say about it?

Dave Hill: We feel unbroken is back to big classic rock anthems, more commercial lyrics, and memorable heavy rock riffs!

RtM:  "Unbroken" has been received very well, with many positive reviews!! Are you satisfied with the results and comments so far?

DH: Unbroken has been received with great reviews in all the country’s it has been released so far. And even some reviewers have said it’s the best album in 20 years.

RtM: "Fill your Head With Rock" and "Still Believe" talk about the style of music we love, at “Fill your Head”, you talk about the Sweden Rock, where the band will perform again this year, while "Still Believe" seems somewhat autobiographical ! Could you talk a bit more about these two songs?

DH: Fill your head with rock is the story of the days we have spent at sweeden rock, which is perhaps one of the top classic rock festivals we have ever played, and so we wrote about our experience.  I think Still believe is what we still believe after 30 years as a band, that classic rock is one of the great music art forms and grows stronger each year.

RtM: Despite many lineup changes, you, Neil  and Farrington was working together since 2002, I'd like you to talk about this partnership, which also divides the compositions, and also talk about Paul Hume, the newest member, who also did the pre-production of "Unbroken".

DH: Over the years Demon has had many changes, but I have always enjoyed working with other people, and both their ideas and mine into developing new ideas for the band, and I feel with my own experience we have achieved that.

RtM: Continuing, I would like to talk why Andy Dale leave the band, who devoted several years to "Demon", and, of course, about David Cotterill, who is in the band since 2007.

DH: Andy has worked off and on with us over the last 20 years, but recently because of his business and family commitments he has been unable to continue with us. Dave Cotterill has been with us now for the past 6 years, and is a superb guitar player and a very important part of the Demon sound.

RtM: I know it may be tricky, but you could choose what your favorite songs on the new album? I’m very undecided too!! So many excellent choruses and riffs!Wow! But I believe the title track, "Prey", "Wings of Steel" and "Still Believe" are the most please the fans and certainly will be requested at the shows!

DH: At the moment we are featuring Unbroken, Prey, Fill your head with Rock, and Still Believe, but I would find it hard to pick any one track as my favorite, as I like them all.

RtM: Going back a bit in the past, the album Demon I heard most was "The Unexpected Guest" and always wanted to ask you about the concept of the cover and back cover of the album, and also you talk a bit more about my two favorite songs on the album, "Dont 'Break The Circle," which is a classic ! and "Have you been here Before", which to me, should always be in your set list on the shows! heheh!

DH: The cover is actually the torso of a muscle man, but there is a holographic image that comes through as a face. Don’t Break the Circle has become a Demon Anthem and is included in every  Live Show, and the track was covered and recorded by Blind Guardian who I am sure helped to spread the popularity of the song throughout the world, and have you been here before is a song we regularly feature from time to time in our live shows.

RTM: After the death of Mal Spooner, in 1984, many believed that the band could terminate the activities, the band released "Heart of our Time" (85), who had negative reviews, not being well received. Certainly the loss of Mal Spooner affected you so much. Talk about this complicated period, the loss of Mal, and about this album. Recalling that after this all you released two great albums, which received great reviews, "Breakout" and "Taking the world by Storm".

DH: After the sad loss of a great friend and co-musician writer, it took the band some time to get our act back together, but on "Breakout" we started to get back were Mal and Myself would have liked to have been. And in respect to all Mals efforts, the Band Demon continued as he would have wished.

RtM: In 1992 the band ended its activities, becoming a long period out of the scene. Tell us about the reasons for their arrest, and what you did during the period when the band was "asleep" , besides, of course, your solo album?

DH: In 1992 we decided to take a break from performing and recording as Demon, this was not a breakup of the band, but we all needed a break to pursue other projects. One might say a well-earned rest.

RtM: In 2001 the band returned with the excellent "Spaced Out Monkey," which brought a more modern garb, would like you to talk a little of that return, what motivated you to return with the band, and talk about “Spaced Out Monkey” album.

DH: We got back together in 1998 to play some live dates in Europe, and we have been writing new material, so eventually we went into the studio, and recorded spaced out monkey. The idea of Monkey was to make a more modern sounding album which Demon have always done from time to time, and I am still very proud of the spaced out monkey recording.

RtM: And the current scene of heavy metal? How do you see it? Much is said that icons like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Purple, Ozzy and other traditional bands, are getting old, and may be does not exist a new generation  able to replace them in Heavy Metal scene, and get what they got. What do you think? There are many many new bands, but…

DH: I think the foundations that have been laid by these bands, has and will inspire a new generation of Rock Bands, who will I am sure envolve and carry the classic Rock Torch, into the future and hopefully live up to the great standard set by them Bands, and Demon.

RtM: The band has had a considerable gap between their current releases (Spaced Out Monkey -2001; Better the Devil-2005 and Unbroken-2012), and this time the compilation "Time Has Come" and two DVDs, you think about having some of the shows This year, in the Headbangers Open Air and Sweden recorded for a DVD release, or perhaps some commemorative box for more than 30 years of the band? And a wish: Do not take so long to release another album!!! hehheheeh!

DH: Hopefully the live shows that you have mentioned are being recorded, along with many live recordings we have in our possession, we are hoping as you have said, a comprehensive box set of Demon, sometime in the near future.

RtM: And shows in Brazil or South America? Have you received any proposal? Too bad we do not have here a festival like those that exist in Europe, Brazil has many fans of Heavy Metal, some small festivals are growing, who knows one day we have something great! Last year we had hope with the "Metal Open Air," which turned out to be a failure due to some problems and inexperience of the organizers.

DH: We have been approached on a number of occasions from contacts in South America to do live shows, but as of yet as you know we have not appeared in Brazil, but hopefully that will all change in the next few years.
