Iron Fire: Ícones do Power Metal Dinamarquês

A história do Iron Fire começou a ser escrita em 1995, quando ainda levava o nome de "Misery", logo alterado para "Decade of Darkness", depois, motivado também pelas modificações em seu som, que partiu para um lado mais "True Metal", termo utilizado para descrever o Metal Tradicional contemporâneo que estava sendo feito por bandas como o Hammerfall, inclusive tendo a figura de um guerreiro na capa no álbum "Thunderstorm", a banda foi rebatizada, e após o lançamento do seu primeiro CD demo, com muito boa repercussão nos países escandinavos e outros países europeus, chamou a atenção de vários selos, sendo o início de uma nova era para o Iron Fire (vale lembrar que o álbum Thunderstorm, que foi produzido por Tommy Hansen, saiu também no Brasil).

Muitas mudanças de formação não impediram o crescimento e evolução da banda, que, com "Voyage of the Damned" (2012) chega no ponto mais alto em termos de composição e gravação. Conversamos com o guitarrista Kirk Backarach, que nos contou um pouco mais sobre o álbum, um pouco de como funciona a relação banda/gravadora, alguns detalhes curiosos sobre a banda e muito mais!

Road to Metal: Saudações! Para nós é um prazer contatar a banda. Vocês lançaram este ano "Voyage of the Damned", sétimo álbum desde que a banda foi rebatizada para Iron Fire. Que definição você daria sobre este registro, tanto para aqueles que já acompanham a banda quanto para quem a está conhecendo agora?

Kirk Backarach: O novo álbum "Voyage of the Damned" difere do anterior, "Metalmorphosized" por sua parte lírica, por seu material de orquestra e por sua produção sonora. Ele contém apenas material novo, enquanto que "Metalmorphosized" continha principalmente músicas antigas que nós rearranjamos e lançamos como uma celebração do 10 º aniversário da banda.

Desta vez gastamos um monte de tempo em organizar cada canção à perfeição, com os arranjos de bateria entrelaçando com os riffs e o baixo indo junto com a bateria. Em cima dessa base sólida nós adicionamos alguns arranjos sinfônicos, muito mais do que costumamos fazer. Para ajustar tudo isso, nos juntamos com um dos principais produtores dinamarqueses, Jacob Hansen. Ele deu um "quê" a mais de qualidade e firmeza ao som, praticamente fazendo deste o álbum mais sinfônico e "porrada" que fizemos até agora!

Road to Metal: É notável evolução da banda disco após disco. A proposta de fusão da banda no Speed ​​Metal Heavy/Metal tradicional e Symphonic Metal, é algo que o grupo tenta manter como a principal característica?

KB: Sim, com certeza! E a cada novo álbum, tentamos trazer alguma proposta nova. Seria muito fácil lançar o mesmo álbum de novo, de novo e de novo... Mas também muito chato, tanto para nós, assim como para os fãs, então se nós experimentarmos coisas novas e refletir sobre outras coisas que fizemos no passado, nós vamos estar muito ligados em manter as verdadeiras e reais raízes da banda.

Road to Metal: Vocês fazem parte da Napalm Records. Em nível mundial, qual a importância para a banda ter o suporte de uma grande gravadora dentro do Heavy Metal?

KB: Eu acho que isso difere de cada banda, cada selo. A Napalm Records nunca interveio em nossa temática, nossa música ou a nossa escolha de fotos promocionais e coisas assim. A única coisa são as capas, que retrataram uma espécie de guerreiro cada álbum que fizemos com eles.

No álbum "Metalmorphosized" nós tivemos uma pequena discussão a respeito da capa. Nós achamos que parecia algo bobo. Queríamos algo a mais e tínhamos algo totalmente diferente da arte já pronta, mas para a nossa decepção a gravadora não aprovou. Nestes casos, a gravadora sempre ganha. Mas de qualquer forma, já que o Iron Fire não é algum tipo de circo e estamos acostumados a fazer tudo por nós mesmos, este é o caminho que estamos acostumados a trabalhar. A única coisa que realmente dependemos em conhecimento, por parte da gravadora, é a parte dos negócios, impressão, imprensa, promoção, etc, e nisso é que eles são bons, então, nessa parte é que nós podemos nos dizer sortudos de estar em uma grande gravadora internacional.

Road to Metal: O Iron Fire ainda é pouco conhecido aqui no Brasil. A verdade é que, embora o grupo tenha bons registros, nenhum chega perto em termos de feeling e força como o "Voyage of the Damned". Um pouco cedo para dizer, mas o disco poderia estar levando a banda a outro nível de popularidade?

KB: Espero que sim. Isso nos daria um monte de oportunidades, de fazer algumas turnês mais extensas e tocar em alguns festivais também. A verdade é que, se uma banda é baixa na popularidade e não vende, ninguém está interessado em trabalhar com ela e se torna muito difícil, quase impossível chegar a qualquer lugar.

Road to Metal: Em um teaser do novo álbum é sobre a viagens espaciais do homem. Este é o tema básico do novo trabalho? Quando a banda chegou a este tema?

KB: Nós sempre conversamos muito sobre fazer algumas coisas sobre o espaço, mas nunca foi tão evidente quanto em "Voyage of the Damned". Na verdade, "The Revenge", voltando ao álbum de '06, foi escrito como um conceito sobre um guerreiro do espaço. Cada música do álbum se refere a uma história de fundo chamada "A Saga de Caim". Este foi o primeiro álbum que lançamos através da Napalm Records.

Demos-lhes a história e contamos tudo sobre o conceito, mas infelizmente eles não estavam interessados ​​em usá-lo para o lançamento. Uma vez que já havíamos gravado o álbum antes de assinar com eles, era tarde demais para mudá-lo, razão pela qual as letras do álbum podem parecer um pouco estranhas. Enfim... Esta história se passa em algum lugar no espaço exterior, ou talvez um universo paralelo, mas enfim, é tanto sobre o espaço como sobre um guerreiro.

O "Voyage of the Damned" é inteiramente baseado em sci-fi e viagens espaciais, bem como não tem sequências de batalha ou guerreiros envolvidos nela. Em suma, a história é percebida através de uma pessoa não identificada, que está em trânsito pelos confins do espaço sideral. Embora não esteja claro que os eventos que ele experimenta são reais, ou se é tudo uma invenção de sua própria imaginação.

Road to Metal: A banda passou por várias mudanças de formação. Houve um período em que só permaneceu Martin e você (Kirk). No que diz respeito a este período, o que ocorreu para a saída dos outros membros?

KB: Sim, sim, mas naquela época estávamos fazendo testes com um monte de pessoas diferentes e alguns estavam mais ou menos na banda por alguns meses e quando eles saíram, eles seriam substituídos por alguém pouco depois, mas todos que trabalharam nesses períodos deixaram sua marca. Os tempos eram diferentes naquela época, porém, tivemos um monte de tempo livre em nossas mãos, por isso, escrevi um monte de músicas, tantas que a maioria delas nem sequer existe em qualquer forma hoje. Atualmente passamos mais tempo trabalhando em cada música e suas diferentes partes, em vez de ter um monte que acabamos não finalizando.

Road to Metal: Há sete discos além deste novo lançamento. Olhando para trás, a banda evoluiu muito desde "Thunderstorm" (2000) até "Voyage of the Damned". Para aqueles não familiarizados com a banda, qual álbum você recomendaria para alguém que fosse conhecê-los?

KB: É claro que eu recomendaria "Voyage of the Damned", uma vez que é o álbum mais contemporâneo, mas devo escolher uma das coisas antigas, então eu provavelmente iria recomendá-los a começar com "To The Grave". Eu acho que é o álbum mais forte entre os outros no estilo Power Metal que temos feito há muitos anos. Os outros álbuns são muito bons também, eu só acho que esse resume todos os outros por ter componentes de todos os álbuns anteriores.

Road to Metal: A banda executa um estilo de som que é muito popular na Alemanha, o Speed Metal com elementos sinfônicos, e quando descobrimos que eram dinamarqueses ficamos realmente surpresos. Como o som que vocês fazem foi recebido em seu país? E como está a aceitação em outros países?

KB: Os fãs locais, que são os únicos que eu conversei, têm sido extremamente positivos sobre o novo álbum. Internacionalmente a única referência que tenho são as resenhas, e elas apresentam um ou dois pontos a mais do que eles costumam dar quando lançamos um novo álbum.

Road to Metal: Vocês lançaram o vídeo para a canção "Leviathan", para divulgação do álbum. Como você vê essas divulgações através de vídeo? Acaba dando um bom retorno para a banda?

KB: Ele tem que dar retorno, porque foi trabalhoso fazer o vídeo. Tivemos que contatar várias pessoas para que pudessem fazê-lo para nós, fomos à vários locais diferentes e tivemos que colocar muito esforço para deixá-lo com um visual legal, então eu acho que se não nos fazer algum bem, terá sido uma perda de tempo. Mas só posso dizer que estou muito satisfeito com o resultado final.

Road to Metal: Ainda falando sobre o som da banda, podemos identificar influências de grandes medalhões do Speed Metal, como Grave Digger, Running Wild e Sacred Steel. Você ouve essas bandas? E quais são as principais influências do grupo?

KB: Eu sempre fui mais ligado em certas bandas do que em gêneros ou estilos em geral. Eu tenho álbuns do Running Wild e Helloween, mas eu nunca estive realmente interessado no Speed ​​Metal alemão, o que sempre foi a influência de Steene sobre a banda. Atualmente, acho que há muito mais influência do estilo alemão presente. No momento mantemos as nossas influências mais ou menos, mas vamos tentando nos manter com os padrões contemporâneos e, claro, tentar não se desviar para longe do que os fãs podem esperar de nós.

Road to Metal: Vocês estão na cena há mais de 10 anos, nessas muitas tours que a banda tem feito já chegaram a receber convite para vir para o Brasil?

KB: Na verdade sim! Infelizmente tivemos que recusar a oferta devido a circunstâncias econômicas que fizeram o negócio muito arriscado. Esperemos em breve ser capazes de visitar o Brasil, fazer um par de shows e conhecer os fãs.

Iron Fire: Danish Power Metal Icons

The story of Iron Fire began writing in 1995, starting out with the name "Misery", soon changed to "Decade of Darkness, and  then, also motivated by the changes in their sound, which came to a side "True Metal", a term used to describe the Traditional Metal contemporary what was being done by bands like Hammerfall, including having the figure of a warrior on the cover of the first album "Thunderstorm", the band was renamed, and before decided to release a Demo CD, wich was the beggining of a new era to Iron Fire, soon called attention in Scandinavia and also reached other countries of Europe.

Many lineup changes have not prevented the growth and evolution of the band, who, with "Voyage of the Damned" arrives at the highest point in terms of songwriting and recording. We spoke with guitarist Kirk Backarach, who told us a bit more about the album,  some curious details about the band and more!

Road to Metal: Cheers, It's a pleasure to us to do this interview with the band. Well, "Voyage of the Damned", is the 7th album since the band was renamed "Iron Fire" (was formed in 1995 under the name "Misery"). What definition is possible that you can give to this album for those who already follows the band as for those that knowing you now?

Kirk Backarach: The new album "Voyage of the Damned" differs from the previous “Metalmorphosized” by its song writing, by its orchestral stuff and by its sound production. It contains only newly written material, whereas “Metalmorphosized” contained mostly old songs that we’d rearranged and released as a celebration of the band’s 10th anniversary.

This time around we’ve spend a lot of time on arranging each and every song to perfection all with drums intertwining with the riffs and the bass going straight along with the drums. On top of that solid base we’ve added some symphonic arrangements, much more that we usually do. To fit all this together we’ve teamed up with one of the foremost Danish producers Jacob Hansen. He has added some good quality bottom and tightness to the sound, practically making this the most symphonic and hard pounding metal album we have done to date. 

Road to Metal: It's remarkable evolution of the band disc after disc. The proposal to merge the band in the traditional Heavy Metal Speed Metal, Symphonic Metal, is something that the group tries to keep the main characteristic?

Kirk: Yes absolutely! With every new album, we try to bring something new to the table. It would be easy enough to release the same album over and over again, but also very boring both for us as well as the fans, so though we try new things and reflect on other things than we did in the past, we pay much attention to keeping true to the bands roots.

Road to Metal: You are part of Napalm Records cast now. How important are for the band to be in a Heavy Metal's major label?

Kirk: I think that differs from which band and which label. Napalm Records have never intervened in our song writing or our choice of promo photos and stuff like that. The only thing is the covers, which have depicted some kind of warrior every on every album we’ve done with them. On the “Metalmorphosized” album we had a little dispute with the label over the cover, which we thought looked kind of dodgy. 

We wanted something else and had a totally different kind of artwork made, but to our disappointment the label didn’t approve. In these cases the label always wins. But either way, since Iron Fire is not some kind of circus act we are used to do everything ourselves, this is the way that we are used to work.The only thing we really depend on label wise, is the business part, printing, promotion, press, etc. and this is what they are good at, so in that respect we are quite lucky to be a part of a big international label.

Road to Metal: Iron Fire is still little known here in Brazil. The truth is that although the group has good records, none comes close in terms of feeling and strength as the "Voyage of the Damned." A little early to tell, but the disc would be leading the band to another level of popularity?

Kirk: Hopefully it will. That would give us a whole lot of opportunities to do some more extensive touring and play some festivals as well. Truth is, if a band is low on popularity and doesn’t sell, nobody is interested in working with it and that makes it very difficult, almost impossible to get anywhere.

Road to Metal: A teaser of the new album is about human space travel out of the earth. Is this album's basic theme? How the band came to this concept?

Kirk: We have always talked a lot about doing some space stuff, but it has never been as obvious as it is on “Voyage Of The Damned”. - Actually the “Revenge” album back from ’06 was written as a space warrior concept. Every song on the album relates to a background story called “The Saga Of Caine”. This was the first album we released through Napalm Records. We gave them the story and told them what the idea of the concept was all about, but unfortunately they were not interested in using it for the release. Since we’d already recorded the album before signing with NR it was too late to change it, which is why the lyrics on that album might seem a bit strange. Anyway… This story takes place somewhere in outer space or maybe a parallel universe, but it is as much space as it is warrior.

The “Voyage Of The Damned” album in its entirety is about sci-fi and space travel as well, it has no battle sequences or warrior stuff involved in it what so ever. In short the story is perceived through an unnamed person, who is roaming reaches of outer space. Though it is not given that the events he experiences is real, of if it’s all a figment of his own imagination.

Road to metal: The band went through several lineup changes. There was a period in which only remained Martin and Kirk. As for the inert double this period, when the output of the other members?

Kirk: Yes it did, but back then we were auditioning a lot of different people and some was more or less in the band a few months and when they left, they would be replaced by someone else shortly after, but everyone we worked with in that period have their finger print on it. Times were different back then though, we had a lot more spare time on our hands, so we wrote a lot of songs, - so many that most of them doesn’t even exist in any form today. Nowadays we spend more time working on each song and its different parts, instead of having a lot that doesn’t make it in the end.

Road to Metal: There are 7 discs beyond this new release. Looking back, what is the evolution that the band is from "Thunderstorm" (2000) to "Voyage of the Damned"? For those unfamiliar with the band, how album do you recommend for "begginers"?

Kirk: Of course I would recommend “Voyage Of The Damned”, since it is the most contemporary album in the line, but should I choose one from the old stuff, I would probably recommend them to start with “To The Grave”. I think it’s the strongest album among the others in the Power Metal style we have done for many years. The other albums are very good as well, I just think this one sums up all the others by having components from all the previous albums.

Road to Metal: The band performs a style of sound that is very popular in Germany the speed metal with symphonic elements, and when we discovered that you were Danes were really surprised, as the sound of you received in your country? And how is the metal scene there across the world?

Kirk: The local fans, which are the only ones I’ve talked to, have been extremely positive about the new album. Internationally I can only refer to the reviews and they generally rate it a point or two higher than they usually do when we release an album.

Road to Metal: You have just released the video for the song "Leviathan" that belongs to the new album, as you see these disclosures through video clip? End up with a good return for the band?

Kirk: It has to, because it was a bit of a hassle doing this video. We have contacted several people about doing it for us, we have been to several different locations and we have put a lot of effort into making it look cool, so I think if it doesn’t do us any good, it would have been a waste of time. But I can only say that I’m very pleased with the final result.

Road to Metal: Still talking about the sound of the band, we find in Iron Fire's sound influences of many  medallions of Speed Metal: Grave Digger, Running Wild, Sacred Steel...Did you hear these bands? And what are the main influences of the group?

Kirk: I have always been more into certain bands than I’ve been into genres in general. I do have albums with Running Wild and Helloween but I was never really interested in German Speed Metal genre over all, - that has always been Steene’s influence on the band. Back in the day I think, there was a lot more of the German style of Metal present. At present we get our influences from more or less anywhere, though we try to keep up to contemporary standards and of course we try not to deviate to far from what the fans would expect from us.

Road to Metal: You are active in more than 10 years, through the many tours that the band has made, did you have received an invitation to come to Brazil?

Kirk: Actually we have! Unfortunately we had to decline on the offer due to economic circumstances that made it pretty risky business.  Hopefully sometime soon we will be able to come to visit Brazil and do a couple of shows and meet the fans.

Iron Fire: Uma Salvação para o Power Metal Europeu

Grupo da Dinamarca é uma das apostas da Napalm Records em 2012

Não sei bem explicar porque, mas o Power Metal praticado na Europa estava passando por uma estagnação, depois de praticamente criar o estilo com Helloween, Blind Guardian entre outros e ter agregado novos elementos sinfônicos com Rhapsody Of Fire (Itália) e elementos mais pesados com o Nostradameus (Suécia), por exemplo, o estilo se mostrava desgastado e poucos nomes de expressão cruzavam os mares para serem apreciados pelos ouvintes daqui.

8º disco de estúdio dos dinamarqueses

Sorte nossa que existem verdadeiros guerreiros que não desistem de sua proposta musical e a cada lançamento nos brindam com verdadeiras pérolas do nosso tão amado Heavy Metal e atualmente quem vem dando as cartas nesse cenário são os dinamarqueses do Iron Fire. Após a audição de “Voyage The Damned” (lançado no final de janeiro), posso afirmar que essa banda está a caminho da ascensão.

Na realidade já é até fácil para o Iron Fire fazer um trabalho tão consistente, já que os mesmo são veteranos na cena, com sete lançamentos nas costas e incontáveis demos e EPs, sendo que atualmente a formação consta com Martin Steene nos vocais, Kirk Backarach e J.J. nas guitarras, Martin Lund no baixo e Jens B na bateria.

Então é só o CDcomeçar a rolar e deixar a intro (desnecessária) passar, que logo você já se empolga e começa a banguear que nem louco ao som de “Enter Oblivion” que vem apresentando uma proposta mais moderna nos vocais e andamento, mas sempre fiel ao Metal verdadeiro. Um ótimo começo provando que o Metal pode evoluir sem perder suas essência.

“Taken” vem pesadona e já é de cara a minha favorita ao lado de “Leviathan", música que ganhou um vídeo clipe (veja no fim desta matéria) e apresenta alguns elementos vindos do Death Metal Melódico, o que ficou bem interessante na proposta do grupo. “Ten Year Space” aborda um pouco a questão do espaço e impossível não ouvir essa música e não lembrar do Gamma Ray, não só pela temática mas também pelo andamento acelerado da mesma.

Martin Steene

Uma das características principais do Iron Fire foi sempre saber mesclar elementos sinfônicos nas suas composições, e nesse lançamento não é diferente, ouça a faixa título e os seus dez minutos de duração que criam uma atmosfera bem condizente com a letra da mesma e “The Final Odyssey", onde Steene dá um show de interpretação, uma música que poderia muito bem estar em uma Metal Opera do Avantasia, por exemplo.

Ao final de tudo podemos dizer que o Iron Fire conseguiu aliar novos elementos a sua sonoridade e sem descaracterizar o seu estilo, algo que poucas bandas conseguem e exatamente por esse motivo e mais a excelente produção,  “Voyage Of The Damned” é um trabalho que pode ser um marco para Steene e seus asseclas.
