Entrevista: Maverick - The Metal Becomes Our Voice!

Fundada em 2011, na cidade de São José do Rio Pardo, o Maverick vem colhendo os frutos de toda a dedicação e trabalho para o lançamento do seu debut, "The Motor Becomes My Voice" (2015), e o Thrash/Groove Metal do quarteto despertou muita atenção, recebendo várias menções nas listas de melhores álbuns e de revelação no ano passado, incluindo a 25º posição no portal Headbangers Latinoamerica.  (read the english version)

Neste primeiro semestre de 2016, as boas notícias e novas conquistas continuam aparecendo, e a banda segue a divulgação do seu álbum, e para levar para vocês um pouco mais sobre a banda, o interessante título do CD, curiosidades sobre a produção e lançamento do álbum e outros assuntos, conversamos com Gabriel Sernaglia (guitarra e vocal), que nos contou mais a respeito desses assuntos, e muito mais, onde podemos decifrar mais a respeito da força motriz que move o quarteto Maverick! Confira!

RtM: Para início de conversa, gostaria de saber como vocês avaliam até agora os resultados obtidos com o seu debut, "The Motor Becomes My Voice". 
Gabriel Sernaglia: Primeiramente, muito obrigado pela oportunidade Road to Metal, é um prazer!Acredito que a palavra certa para descrever é “Surpresa”, nos empenhamos muito desde o processo de composição até o resultado final do disco, porém mesmo que por dentro você almeje muito os resultados, você só acredita quando realmente os colhe, sabe? Tem sido tudo muito surpreendentemente positivo...

RtM: Foi muito legal você terem o álbum incluído em 25º na listagem dos 250 principais lançamentos de 2015, no portal Headbangers Latinoamerica, além de ser citados como revelação e em listas de melhores álbuns em vários sites especializados. Certamente são conquistas que devem ter rendido mais frutos para a banda, estou certo? 
GS: É exatamente esse tipo de coisa que a gente não espera!Isso tudo foi muito surreal cara, chegamos a pensar que tinha sido erro do estagiário saca?(risos)

Mas agora falando sério, tem rendido muitos frutos, graças ao “The Motor Becomes My Voice”, nós fomos finalmente ouvidos, entramos em campo sabe? Realizamos o sonho de abrir um show do mestre “Max Cavalera” com o Soulfly, recebemos o convite para tocar em um dos mais conceituados festivais do Brasil, o “Roça ‘n Roll” em Varginha – MG, vamos abrir pro Krisiun em junho também... Tudo isso graças a repercussão do álbum.

RtM: Falando em reconhecimento, e aproveitando o link, vocês tiveram a oportunidade de abrir para o Soulfly em Ribeirão Preto SP, dia 09/04, contem pra gente como foi esse show?

GS: Foi fantástico, tínhamos uma missão importantíssima a cumprir, abrir o show de uma das maiores bandas da historia do metal e fazer valer a oportunidade que nos foi entregue pela produção e por todos os votos que recebemos na fase de seleção…Foi o nosso primeiro show em Ribeirão Preto, fomos muito bem recebidos pelo público presente, acredito que fizemos valer a pena, saímos de cabeça erguida e com as melhores histórias possíveis para contar! Nunca vamos esquecer essa noite!


RtM: "...É minha voz pela sua voz, é o grito que as palavras não podem descrever!", assim diz uma das frases da faixa título. Contem-nos um pouco mais a respeito do recado que a banda quer passar com a letra dela, e também sobre o título do álbum, que é diretamente ligado ao nome da banda. 

GS: “Motor Becomes My voice” apesar de ser a última a ser composta, acabou sendo a faixa título. Foi nossa maneira de expressar determinação, se você tem uma causa pela qual valha à pena lutar, você deve fazer isso com tudo o que tem, procurar seu ponto de equilíbrio e partir pra cima do seu objetivo. Nós relacionamos com a nossa causa e o nosso tema o motor se tornando a nossa voz. Seria expressar através da banda o que muitos de nós não temos coragem de dizer, não aceitar condições miseráveis que muitas vezes nos são impostas diariamente, mesmo que pra isso tenhamos que incitar uma revolução. 

“Motor Becomes My voice” apesar de ser a última a ser composta, acabou sendo a faixa título. Foi nossa maneira de expressar determinação, se você tem uma causa pela qual valha à pena lutar, você deve fazer isso com tudo o que tem.

RtM: Vocês poderiam falar um pouco mais do Thrash Metal do Maverick? Percebi nas primeiras audições que possui bastante groove, tem aquela influência do Thrash moderno, vi algo de Pantera e Sepultura aí, com a diferença que é mais voltado aos riffs e levadas, não tendo muito espaço para solos. Como vocês foram lapidando essa identidade e quais as influências principais da banda?

GS: Na verdade, desde que começamos a compor, não tínhamos exatamente um estilo, uma linha específica a seguir dentro do Metal, os sons foram surgindo naturalmente, acredito que acabamos reproduzindo a nossa versão da mistura que são nossas influências, sobre a questão dos solos, tanto eu (Gabriel Sernaglia) quanto o Caio (antigo guitarrista) éramos “Riffeiros”, e meio que quisemos explorar ao máximo essa questão dos riffs, naquele momento não sentimos uma real necessidade de introduzir muitos solos. Sobre as influências, como temos gostos bem diferentes, vou citar as influências em comum, basicamente são Sepultura, Pantera e Claustrofobia.

RtM: E sobre o processo de composição do álbum? Quanto tempo vocês levaram para conceber o debut? Vocês já tinham tudo composto e fizeram alguma pré-produção antes de decidir ir para o estúdio e registrar o trabalho? 
GS: Nós formamos a banda em 2011, mas somente no final de 2012/começo de 2013 que conseguimos formação estável e a partir daí começamos a compor aos poucos e de forma experimental. Quando começamos as gravações em Outubro de 2014 já tínhamos todos os sons prontos, e não passamos pelo processo de pré-produção e optamos pelo Studio Atthena’s, em Poços de Caldas MG, pois tivemos ótimas referências do trabalho do Adilson Garcia, que gravou, mixou e masterizou o álbum, nós já o conhecíamos há algum tempo, e as referências se consolidaram, ficamos muito contentes pelo resultado, ótimo profissional. Então, desde o início das gravações até o CD em mãos demoramos cerca de 10 meses.

RtM: E a oportunidade da parceria com a Shinigami Records para o lançamento do álbum? Que aliás, é um selo que tem lançado muitos álbuns de Metal nacional. Como chegaram a essa parceria e se vocês estão satisfeitos com ela?

GS: A Shinigami Records literalmente “Caiu do céu” para nós, de início, entramos em contato com eles em busca de um serviço que eles oferecem de “Assessoria de Prensagem”, onde eles cuidam de toda a parte burocrática da prensagem do disco, mas nada além disso. Quando enviei a master pra eles, o William, que é o proprietário, ouviu o álbum, gostou muito e nos ofereceu a oportunidade de ter o nosso debut lançado pela Shinigami Records, que acredito eu, foi o primeiro grande passo para nós, pois já acompanhávamos os lançamentos da gravadora e sabíamos do grande alcance que o trabalho deles proporcionaria. Grande gravadora, é uma honra muito grande trabalhar com eles. 
 

"Por que caveiras mecânicas? Além de fazer analogia direta ao nome da banda, por ter esse lado "mecânico, motorizado", ainda passa a sensação direta da perda de sensibilidade crescente que a humanidade vem sofrendo, que é um dos principais temas que abordamos no álbum."

RtM: É muito legal também a arte da capa, então gostaria que vocês comentassem também sobre ela. E a parte gráfica é muito importante, a apresentação, uma capa bem feita, para chamar a atenção, causar uma boa impressão.

GS: Foi mais um desafio pra nós, com a gravação, estávamos praticamente zerados financeiramente, então decidi chamar essa responsabilidade e desenvolvê-la. A arte simboliza “caveiras mecânicas gritando”, tive a ideia quando a faixa título estava sendo composta e ouvi o trecho: "as peças foram escolhidas cuidadosamente... o que estamos construindo aqui é a minha voz pela sua voz, é o grito que as palavras não podem descrever..."

Por que caveiras mecânicas? Além de fazer analogia direta ao nome da banda, por ter esse lado "mecânico, motorizado", ainda passa a sensação direta da perda de sensibilidade crescente que a humanidade vem sofrendo, que é um dos principais temas que abordamos no álbum. Estamos nos tornando cada vez mais mecânicos.  


RtM: Que legal Gabriel, foi uma ideia bem interessante! Achei também interessante a decisão de disponibilizar o álbum inteiro para audição na net, e vejo muitas bandas fazendo isso, afinal, impossível um álbum não ser encontrado para download hoje na rede, então, o público que gostar do som, vai adquirir o álbum original. Sabemos que a internet tem esses dois lados, mas é um veículo incrível de divulgação, principalmente para novas bandas, então aos poucos o mercado e as bandas foram, e continuam, se adaptando e criando novas formas de conviver com esta realidade. O que vocês pensam a respeito? Para as bandas underground é algo que tem mais prós do que contras pela questão da divulgação?

GS: Temos exatamente a mesma opinião, é impossível que não se encontre pra download, e porque alguém compraria algo de que nunca se ouviu falar? A nossa principal intenção desde o início era atingir o maior número de pessoas possível e continua sendo, disponibilizar o álbum para audição nesse caso era imprescindível. Temos que nos habituar com o que a atual situação nos disponibiliza, e acredito que no contexto de divulgação os prós são infinitamente maiores. Hoje em dia, muita gente não tem nem onde ouvir um CD físico, eu mesmo não tenho CD Player, e mesmo assim quando curto determinado som, não deixo de adquirir o material e percebo que funciona assim pra muita gente também, pois a venda desse material nos shows continua sendo muito legal, já fora desse ambiente, são raras.  

"Procurar uma nova fórmula, algo que ainda não foi explorado,trabalhar sempre com a questão de ser verdadeiro, fazer de verdade, trazer do fundo da alma, primeiramente se encontrar pra depois se expor, sabe?" (Gabriel, opinando sobre o que uma banda deve buscar para se destacar)

RtM: O que vocês gostariam de acrescentar para as novas composições, ou seja, em que almejam evoluir para os próximos trabalhos, ou pontos que gostariam de fazer de diferente do debut?

GS: Pretendemos seguir a mesma estrutura, porém torná-la mais complexa. Para o próximo trabalho temos dois fatores que vão influenciar muito nessa complexidade, o fato da experiência no estúdio, buscando uma pré-produção, que até então nunca tínhamos sequer entrado em um antes de gravarmos, e a entrada do César na guitarra, que é um guitarrista muito virtuoso e de perfil completamente diferente do meu, ele já é mais voltado para a questão dos solos e as primeiras experiências de novas composições tem sido muito legais!

RtM: Aproveitando que tocamos na questão de evoluir, buscar um trabalho mais complexo, gostaria de saber sua opinião sobre o que uma banda precisa buscar para conseguir se destacar no cenário, em uma cena tão concorrida, e ter também uma longevidade?

GS: Acredito que é o que todos que temos esse sonho estamos a procura dessa resposta... Procurar uma nova fórmula, algo que ainda não foi explorado,trabalhar sempre com a questão de ser verdadeiro, fazer de verdade, trazer do fundo da alma, primeiramente se encontrar pra depois se expor sabe? Longevidade, acredito que se deva a união entre a banda, enxergar esse contexto como uma família e ao mesmo tempo como uma empresa, em minha opinião, se não houver união, provavelmente os dias estarão contados.

"Muitas vezes as próprias bandas contribuem para que continue assim (sobre a situação financeira difícil); principalmente não valorizando o próprio trabalho e se sujeitando muitas vezes a tocar de graça, isso é inadmissível, pois se você em primeiro lugar não se valorizar, ninguém vai. "

RtM: E quais foram os maiores desafios encontrados pela banda até agora?

GS: O maior desafio se deve a questão financeira, é tudo muito caro no Brasil, desde o básico para se tocar, que são seus instrumentos pessoais, passando pela produção de material, até a divulgação do mesmo. Para uma banda que está começando no Underground, se você conseguir zerar os gastos com o retorno já é considerado bem sucedido, e não deveria ser assim né? E essa questão financeira, muitas vezes as próprias bandas contribuem para que continue assim; principalmente não valorizando o próprio trabalho e se sujeitando muitas vezes a tocar de graça, isso é inadmissível, pois se você, em primeiro lugar não se valorizar, ninguém vai. 

RtM: E a principal motivação em formar e manter uma banda de Metal, diante das sabidas dificuldades?

GS: A motivação maior é o reconhecimento, por exemplo, estar nas listas de melhores do ano que já foram citadas acima, ou quando você fica sabendo que estão falando bem do seu trabalho, principalmente quando não é diretamente pra você; outro exemplo é ser convidado para um entrevista muito legal como essa da Road to Metal, são detalhes que realmente fazem a diferença e te mantém de pé, mesmo diante a todas as dificuldades.

RtM: Obrigado Gabriel, que bom que curtiu a entrevista, também gostei bastante de saber um pouco mais do seu trabalho e suas ideias, agradecemos a oportunidade, e fica o espaço para sua mensagem aos leitores e aos fãs da banda! Parabéns pelo trabalho, e sucesso para vocês nos próximos desafios!

Interview: Maverick - The Metal Becomes Our Voice!

Founded in 2011 in the city of São José do Rio Pardo (SP - Brazil),  the band Maverick are celebrating the rewards of all the dedication and work for the release of their debut, "The Motor Becomes My Voice" (2015), and the Thrash/Groove Metal quartet call much attention, receiving several mentions in lists of best albums and revelation last year, including the 25th position in the portal Headbangers Latinoamerica. In the first half of 2016, good news and new achievements keep coming,  and to bring you a little bit more about the band, the interesting CD title, details about the production and promotion of the album, and other subjects, we had a talk with Gabriel Sernaglia (guitar and vocals), who told us more about these issues, and much more, where we can read more about the driving force behind the Maverick quartet! Check it!

RtM: To start this interview, I would like to know how do you see all this goods results obtained with your debut, "The Motor Becomes My Voice."

Gabriel Sernaglia: First, thank you for Road to Metal opportunity, it is a pleasure!

I believe that the right word to describe it is "Surprise", we strive much since the writing process to the final result of the disc, but even if inside you really crave the results, you only believe when actually reap, you know? It has been all too surprisingly positive ...

RtM: It was really cool you have the album included in number 25, in the list of 250 major 2015 releases, on the portal Headbangers Latinoamerica, and cited as revelation on lists of the best albums in various specialized sites. Certainly are achievements that should have yielded more fruits for the band, am I right?

GS: It's exactly this kind of thing we do not expect, this was all very surreal, come to think it had been a mistake of someone, you now? (laughs)

But now serious, it has yielded many fruits, thanks to "The Motor Becomes My Voice", we were finally heard, the chance to show who we are! We carry out the dream of opening a show master "Max Cavalera" with Soulfly, we received the invitation to play in one of the most prestigious festivals in Brazil, the "Roça n' Roll" in Varginha - MG, will open for the Krisiun in June also ... All this thanks to the impact of the album.

RtM: Speaking of recognition, and taking advantage of the link, you have the opportunity to open for Soulfly in Ribeirão Preto SP, day 09/04, tell us how was this show?

GS: It was fantastic, we had a very important job to do, open the show of one of the biggest bands in metal history and assert the opportunity we have been given by the production and all the votes we received in the selection phase ... It was our first show in Ribeirão, we were very well received by the audience, I believe we made it worthwhile, we leave with heads held high and with the best possible stories to tell! We will never forget this night!

RtM: "... It is my voice for your voice is the cry that words can not describe," so says one of the title track phrases. Tell us a bit more about the message that the band wants to spend with her handwriting, and also on the album title, which is directly linked to the name of the band.

GS: "Motor Becomes My voice" despite being the last to be made, it ended up being the title track. It was our way of expressing determination, if you have a cause to fight, you must do it with all you have, seek your balance point and go to the top of your goal. We relate to our cause and our theme engine becoming our voice. Would express through the band what many of us have the courage to say, do not accept miserable conditions that often are imposed on us every day, even if for that we have to incite a revolution.

RtM: Could you talk a little more about Maverick's style? I realized at the first hearings have enough groove, influences from modern Thrash, I saw something like Pantera and Sepultura there, with the difference that is more geared to the riffs and taken, not having much room for solos. How have you been building this identity and what are the main influences of the band?

GS: Actually, since we started writing, we were not exactly a style, a specific line to follow in the metal, the sounds were coming naturally, I believe that just playing our version of the mixture which are our influences, on the issue of solos, so I (Gabriel Sernaglia) as Caio (former guitarist) were "Riffmakers", and we wanted to explore the most of this issue of riffs at that time did not feel a real need to introduce many guitar solos. About influences, as we have very different tastes, I will mention the influences in common, they are basically Sepultura, Pantera and Claustrofobia.

RtM: What about the album writing process? How long you took to design the debut? You've had all composed and made some pre-production before deciding to go to the studio and record the work?

GS: We formed the band in 2011, but only at the end of 2012/beginning of 2013 we have achieved stable line up and from there we started writing slowly and experimentally. When we started recording in October 2014 already had all sounds ready, and do not pass by a pre-production process, and we chose the Studio Atthena's in Poços de Caldas MG, because we had great references of the work of Adilson Garcia, who recorded, mixed and mastered the album, we already knew his work, and references have been consolidated, we were pleased by the result, great professional. So from the beginning of the recordings to the CD in hand it took about 10 months.

RtM: And the opportunity to partner with Shinigami Records for the release of the album? Which is a label that has released many national Metal albums. How did you get to this partnership and if you are satisfied with it?

GS: The Shinigami Records literally "fell from heaven" for us at first, we contacted them looking for a service that they offer "pressing Relations" where they take care of all the paperwork, disc pressing, but nothing more. When I sent the master to them, William, who is the owner heard the album, liked it and offered us the opportunity to have our debut released by Shinigami Records, I believe it was the first big step for us, as already we followed the label's releases and knew the far reaching that their job would provide. Major label, is a very great honor to work with them.

RtM: It's really cool also the cover art, then I would like you to comment also on it. And the graphic part are very important presentation, a cover done well, to draw attention, make a good impression.

GS: It was more of a challenge for us, with the recording, we were practically zeroed financially, so I decided to call this responsibility and develop it. The art symbolizes "mechanical skulls screaming," I had the idea when the title track was being made and heard the words: "the pieces were carefully chosen ... what we are building here is my voice for your voice is the cry that words can not describe ... "

We are becoming more and more mechanical.

RtM: What a cool an interesting idea! And another interesting decision was to release the entire album for listening on the net, and I see a lot of bands doing this, after all, impossible for an album not be found for download today on the network, and well, if the public like the sound, will acquire the original album. We know that the internet has these two sides, but it is an incredible vehicle to promote a work, especially for new bands, then gradually the market and the bands were, and remain, adapting and creating new ways to live with this reality. What do you think about? For underground bands is something that has more pros than cons for the issue of disclosure?

GS: We have exactly the same opinion, it is impossible that is not to download, and why someone would buy something that you never heard? Our main intention from the beginning was to reach as many people as possible and still make available the album to hearing in this case was essential. We have to get used to the current situation offers us, and I believe that the disclosure context the pros are infinitely greater. Today, many people have not even where listening to a physical CD, I do not even have CD Player, and yet when i liked certain sound, not leave to acquire the material and realize that works well for many people also because the sale of material in the shows still really cool, because out of that environment, are rare.

RtM: What would you like to add to the new compositions,  to evolve into the next work, or points they would like to do differently of the debut?

GS: We intend to follow the same structure, but makes it more complex. For the next job are two factors that will influence much in this complexity, the fact of experience in the studio, looking for a pre-production, which until then had never even entered one before we recorded, and the entrance of Caesar on guitar, which is a very technical guitarist and completely different from my profile, it is now more focused on the issue of solos, and the first experiences of new compositions have been very nice!

 

RtM: Speaking on the issue of evolving, seeking for more complex sound, I would like to know your opinion about what a band needs to seek to achieve stand out in the scene, and also have a longevity?

GS: I think that is what all we have this dream we are looking for that answer ... Find a new formula, something that has not been explored, always work with the matter to be true, to actually bring from the heart first meet to then expose you? Longevity, I believe that it should be the union of the band, see this context as a family and at the same time as a company, in my opinion if there is no union, probably the band is faded to fail.

RtM: And what were the biggest challenges faced by the band so far?

GS: The biggest challenge is due to financial issue, it's all very expensive in Brazil, from the basics to play, what are your personal instruments, through the production of material, to the disclosure. For a band that is starting in the Underground if you get zero spending on return is already considered successful, and should not be this way, right? And this financial issue, often the bands themselves contribute to keep it up; especially not valuing the work itself and subjecting many times to play for free, it is inadmissible because if you first do not valorize yourself, no one will.

RtM: And the main motivation to form and maintain a metal band, given the known difficulties?

GS: The biggest motivation is the recognition, for example, be in the year of the best lists that have already been mentioned above, or when you get knowing that you are speaking well of their work, especially when it is not directly to you; Another example is to be invited to a very cool interview like this to you from Road to Metal, are details that really make a difference and keep you standing, despite all the difficulties.
