Entrevista: Metalmorfosis - Uma Pérola Grega!

Dentre a imensidão mundial de nomes que brotam a todo momento, muitas vezes não nos atentamos para grandes bandas e músicos que porventura despontam no cenário mundial.

Primeiro, porque é humanamente impossível conhecermos tudo e em, segundo lugar, porque realmente não temos acesso ao material ou informações sobre as mesmas.

E certamente a banda que trouxemos para uma entrevista exclusiva para o Road To Metal se enquadra em uma dessas que vale muito a pena se conhecer!

Conversamos um papo descontraído com o líder do Metalmorfosis Nick Banger (vocalista e guitarrista), que nos contará tudo á respeito do começo da banda que remonta ao ano de 1989!

Road To Metal: Olá Nick! Seja bem vindo ao Road To Metal! Gostaria que você nos contasse detalhes do seu início na música e como começou a banda.

Nick Banger: Olá! Fernanda!!!

Primeiramente, eu quero te agradecer por nos dar a chance de sermos apresentados através do blog  Road To Metal!! É um prazer estar aqui com vocês!

Bem... algumas coisas sobre os anos iniciais de formação da banda...

Eu, Nick Banger (vocal e guitarra) e Steve Breaker (bateria) tivemos a sorte de começar a ouvir heavy metal muito cedo, em 1986, e o nosso sonho era formar a nossa própria banda, então em 1989, formamos uma “banda da escola” ao qual chamamos AGES MAD. Éramos um bando de garotos que tentavam tocar metal!

Gravamos três fitas demo em casa e estávamos bastante populares em nossa área.Até uma estação de rádio local era usada para reproduzir uma de nossas fitas naquela época!

Nick Banger falou com exclusividade ao Road to Metal

RtM: No começo tiveram muita dificuldade de conseguirem shows? Como foi a década de 80 na Grécia para a música pesada?

N.B: A Grécia tinha um monte de bandas de metal nos anos 80... alguns deles tiveram a sorte de lançar um álbum ou mais em alguns casos. Éramos muito jovens na época e nossa aparição oficial ao vivo no palco veio muitos anos depois.

RtM: Em 1993 a banda muda o nome de Mad Ages para Spectre. Conte-nos mais sobre as mudanças de formação e nome da banda e se tem intenção de lançar algum material daquela época para os fãs.

N.B: Sim, em 1993 pensamos em fazer uma tentativa mais séria com a nossa banda, então eu decidi mudar o nome com os membros da banda para SPECTRE. Ainda eram as mesmas pessoas no início, mas ano após ano estávamos mudando de baixistas. A música ainda era o Metal, mesmo puro Heavy influenciado pelas bandas que estávamos ouvindo no momento e que tivemos como ídolos, alguns bem conhecidos... e alguns totalmente desconhecidos.

Na década de 90 que gravamos as três fitas demo e ainda tocamos ao vivo muitas dessas músicas antigas. Alguns sons das fitas chegaram a entrar no nosso novo álbum, que era algo que tinha de ser feito para nós e para nossos fãs e nós ainda temos um monte de músicas antigas deixadas de fora. Talvez podemos gravar mais dois álbuns usando velhas canções inéditas. Tenho toneladas de material nas velhas fitas que usamos para gravar nossos ensaios. Contudo eu não estou interessado por estas demonstrações de velhos sons para ser re-lançados em qualquer formato. Foi muito interessante o som das fitas quando eu tinha 16 anos, mas agora... de jeito nenhum. Assim, muitas das velhas canções serão regravadas.

RtM: Existe um hiato de Dez anos na carreira da banda... Até que retornassem como Metalmorfosis, o que aconteceu?

N.B: Bem, em algum momento dos anos 90 até 2000 eu e Steve começamos a tocar com outras bandas da nossa região. A conclusão foi que nós colocamos a nossa energia para música de outras pessoas e nós colocamos a nossa música no gelo, o que foi o nosso erro naquele momento.

Em 2003, eu e Steve tivemos uma conversa muito séria sobre a nossa banda. Ele não gostaria que mantivéssemos o nome SPECTRE mais e ele insistiu para uma mudança de nome, então eu vim com o nome METALMORFOSIS enquanto estávamos ouvindo o álbum intitulado BARON ROJO mesmo.

Também nesse ponto que eu escrevi "Show Me The Way", que foi a música do nosso novo começo e diz tudo sobre nós e por trás do METALMORFOSIS obviamente!

RtM: Vocês lançaram dois EPs “Metalmorfosis” (2006) e “Mask Of Gold” (2010) e o Full-length “...Through Space...And Time” nesse ano. Fale mais sobre a recepção da crítica e fãs e a evolução visível no desenvolvimento da banda.

N.B: Em 2006, conseguimos fazer nosso sonho se transformar em realidade. E foi o lançamento de nossas músicas em vinil.

No final de 2005 entramos no estúdio para gravar seis músicas, mas a quantidade de dinheiro que o estúdio tinha cobrado era tão grande que por isso acabou levando-nos a apenas duas músicas finalizadas e com o resto do dinheiro que eu paguei tudo, incluindo as capas dos álbuns e a prensagem do mesmo. Foi uma libertação de alta qualidade em todos os aspectos. A qualidade do papel, a qualidade do vinil e até mesmo o logotipo da banda é em relevo na capa! E a coisa mais importante? Eu ponho minha alma nele!

Quanto à música... é nada mais e nada menos do que puro Heavy Metal do jeito que deve ser tocado!

A capa foi a que queríamos usar se conseguíssemos lançar um álbum em meados dos anos 90.

Mas é melhor tarde do que nunca! Os comentários naquela época eram todos excelentes da parte dos metalheads! O mundo metálico nos viu como a explosão que o metal precisava e muito. Muitos shows seguiram-se, nós abrimos para a lendária banda do NWOBHM ELIXIR, que dividiu o palco também com outras  bandas locais.

Entramos novamente em estúdio no ano de 2008. As músicas tinham um sentimento mais obscuro. Este 7" deu nos mais popularidade, mesmo eu tive um convite para entrevista e foto para uma revista semanal grega importante que vende milhares de cópias! Foi uma recompensa do meu trabalho duro de todos estes anos. Eu obtive sucesso em todos os planos que eu tive por todos esses anos.

Metalmorfosis na formação 1999-2006

Após o lançamento do 7" tínhamos um monte de planos para dar mais alguns concertos e gravar o álbum completo. Mas nada aconteceu por causa de má sorte: mudanças de line up, doenças e acidentes, o cancelamento de um show de abertura para a banda OMEN, fora que estávamos prontos para abrir os shows para o WHIPLASH e eles acabaram cancelando a turnê. Foram estes tipos de coisas ruins que estavam acontecendo.

E finalmente chegamos a julho 2010, quando tivemos de gravar o álbum inteiro novamente desde o início e levou mais de um ano para completar as gravações, até seu lançamento em abril de 2012. Para vocês entenderem, esse é o álbum que todo mundo estava esperando desde 2008!

Até agora, temos um monte de respostas positivas! Parece que todos os amigos metalheads que receberam e ouviram o álbum realmente gostaram!

Desta vez eu vejo um interesse muito forte de metalheads brasileiros! Eu, pessoalmente, falo com eles na minha página do Facebook e eu estou realmente espantado do quanto vocês gostam da nossa música e quanto as pessoas são passionais com o Metal, e de todo o apoio que vocês nos dão! Eu realmente aprecio! Eu desejo que nós tenhamos a oportunidade de tocar um dia ai no Brasil!

RtM: Como você analisa o amadurecimento musical presenciado nos dois EPs citados acima, e no disco completo “...Through Space And Time”?

N.B: Bem, ano após ano, eu acho que estou me tornando melhor como cantor e compositor. Eu não estou pensando em mim mesmo como um bom guitarrista, porque eu sou muito preguiçoso para praticar, mas no fato de que eu sou o principal compositor das canções do METALMORFOSIS. No novo álbum são basicamente antigas, e algumas delas datam de 1996. Todos os nossos lançamentos têm muitas semelhanças e muitas diferenças como sempre. E eu acho que nossos fãs podem dar uma resposta melhor do que eu aqui.

RtM: E a distribuição do novo álbum está sendo feita em todos os continentes? Como está a agenda de shows ?

N.B: Sim, temos distribuição em todo o mundo! Com uma simples busca na Internet eu tenho visto o novo álbum em quase todos os cantos do mundo! Estamos muito felizes que a nossa gravadora faz um trabalho tão bom!

Neste exato momento não temos quaisquer planos para dar shows ao vivo e muito menos turnês. Na minha opinião este exato momento é bom para promover o novo álbum através de entrevistas e conversas pessoais com os fãs.

RtM: O momento econômico atual na Grécia não é muito bom, não é mesmo? Como isso tem afetado a vida dos headbangers, com questão à freqüência de shows que aportam em seu país e etc.?

N.B: Infelizmente, a atual situação na Grécia é realmente ruim e miserável. Culpa do que os políticos fizeram durante décadas, roubando o dinheiro do cidadão comum que trabalhava duro e os alimentando com mentiras. E chegou agora afetando à vida de todos os que vivem este pesadelo. Claramente todo mundo está sendo afetado economicamente aqui. Mais e mais pessoas perdendo seus empregos todos os dias, perdendo a sua esperança. Muitos dos fãs de metal aqui agora não têm dinheiro para gastar como eles costumavam ter antes para a compra de álbuns ou de até mesmo ir para os bares de metal ou assistir shows. Infelizmente eu estou incluído nesta lista.

RtM: Em nossas conversas anteriores á entrevista, você se mostrou um real fã do metal brasileiro... Cite nos como conheceu o metal brasileiro e quais suas bandas preferidas.

N.B: Eu gostei dessa pergunta! Era 1989, quando eu comecei com Sepultura no "Beneath the Remains" e tenho a fita original. Que um álbum incrível! Esta foi a primeira banda de metal brasileira que eu escutei. Eles eram muito famosos aqui e o videoclipe de "Inner Self" chegou a passar na televisão grega! Quando eles lançaram "Arise" eles fizeram um show memorável em Atenas! No início dos anos 90 eu descobri bandas como VIPER, ASTAROTH, OVERDOSE, SARCÓFAGO porque eu tive a sorte de encontrar seus vinis aqui em Atenas! Durante anos eu colecionei mais do Metal Brasileiro como dois LPs daquela compilação incrível chamada SP METAL que na minha opinião incluía alguns dos melhores do metal no Brasil! A lista continua com o STRESS, ALTA TENSÃO, A CHAVE DO SOL, AZUL LIMÃO, VULCANO e etc. mas com certeza eu preciso de mais LPs!

É difícil pegar um favorito. Eu possivelmente diria SEPULTURA, porque eles foram os primeiros que eu ouvi do Brasil, mas eu amo também os dois primeiros LPs do VIPER! Difícil escolher!

RtM: Queria agradecer em nome da equipe do Road To Metal sua entrevista e pedir que deixe um recado para seus fãs brasileiros! Esse espaço é seu.

N.B: Eu quero agradecer à toda equipe de Road To Metal e especialmente você, Fernnanda, por nos dar a chance de sermos apresentados aqui para mais metalheads e para mais colegas do Brasil que terão a chance de nos conhecer e ouvir a nossa música! Interview: Metalmorfosis - A Greek Pearl!

Among the multitude of global names that spring will at all times, we often do not pay attention to big bands and musicians that may emerge on the world stage.

First, it is humanly impossible to know everything, and secondly because I really do not have access to material or information about them.

And certainly the band that brought him to an exclusive interview for the Road To Metal, fits into one of these that is well worth knowing! Talked a relaxed chat with the leader Metalmorfosis Nick Banger that will tell us everything about the beginning of the band dating back to 1989!

Road to Metal: Hello Nick! Welcome to Road To Metal! I would like you to tell us details of your early music and how the band started.

Nick Banger: Hello Fernanda!! First of all, I want to thank you for giving us the chance to be presented through Road To Metal!! It is my pleasure to be here with you!

Well… some things about the band's formative years...

Me (vocals and guitar) and Steve Breaker (drums) were lucky enough to start listening to metal music in a very early age back in 1986 and our dream was to form our own band, so in 1989 we formed the school band of MAD AGES. We were a bunch of young kids trying to play metal music!!

We recorded three home demo tapes and we were quite popular in our area. Even a local radio station used to play one of our tapes back then.

RtM: At first had a hard time getting gigs? As the decade of eighty in Greece for the heavy music?

Nick Banger: Greece had a lot of metal bands in the 80s… some of them were lucky enough to release an album or more in some cases.

We were very young back then and our first official live appearance on stage came many years later.

RtM: In 1993 the band changed the name of "Mad Ages" for "Spectre". Tell us more about the changes of line up and name the band. And it intends to release some material from that time for the fans.

Nick Banger: Yes, in 1993 we thought of making a more serious attempt with our band, so i decided to change the name to SPECTRE. The band members were the same at the beginning, but year by year we were changing bass players. The music was the same- pure heavy metal-, influenced by the bands we were listening at the time and we had as idols, some well known... and some totally unknown.

In the 90s we recorded three demo tapes and we still play live many of these old songs. Some of them made it to our new album, it was something that had to be done for us and for our fans and we still have a lot of old songs left aside. Maybe we can record two more albums by using old unreleased songs. I have tons of material in the old tapes that we used to record at rehearsals. Although i am not interested for these old demos to be re-released in any format. I was happy with the sound of tapes when I was 16 years old...but now, no way. So, many of the old songs will be re-recorded.

RtM: There is a hiatus from ten years in the band's career until they returned to Metalmorfosis...What happened?

Nick Banger: Well... at some point from the late 90s up to early 00s me and Steve started playing with some other bands of our area. The conclusion was that we put our energy to other people's music and we put our music on ice and that was our mistake at that time.

In 2003 me and Steve had a very serious discussion about our project. He didn't liked the name SPECTRE anymore and he insisted for a name change, so I came up with the name METALMORFOSIS while we were listening to the same titled BARON ROJO album.

Also at that point I wrote "Show me the way", that was the song of our new beginning and says what is all about and behind METALMORFOSIS!

RtM: They released two EPs "Metalmorfosis" (2006) and "Mask Of Gold" (2010) and full-length "...Through Space And Time..." (2012). Tell me more about the reception from critics and fans and visible progress in the development of the band.

Nick Banger: In 2006 we managed to make our dream come true. It was the release of our songs on vinyl.

It was a very special year for me and many things happened. In late 2005 we entered a studio to record six songs but the amount of money the studio charged us was so big that so we ended up taking only two songs finished and with the rest of the money I paid everything including the album covers and  pressing. It was a high quality release in every aspect, the quality of the paper, the quality of the vinyl, even the logo of the band is embossed on the cover and the most important thing? I put my soul into it!!

As for the music... it is nothing more and nothing less than pure Heavy Metal the way it should be played!

The cover artwork dates back in the SPECTRE days. It was the cover that we wanted to use if we could manage to release an album in the mid 90s.

But better late than never! The reviews at that time were all excellent! Metalheads from all over the world saw it as the explosion that metal music was need so much. Two days after the release of the 12" around 100 copies were already sold here but strong interest came from Germany as we gave our first three page interview there and in a matter of days we had been offered a record deal and an invitation for  playing live there but  sadly we were not able to make it because Steve and George Dynamite (Bass) were no longer members of the band.

Line-up 1999 - 2006

So in 2007 METALMORFOSIS returned with a new line up and giving their first official live show ever! opening for the mighty  BROCAS HELM!

Many gigs followed, we opened for NWOBHM legends ELIXIR , we shared the stage with local bands or we headlined on our own.

The first studio session with the new line-up was a cover version of the KISS classic "The oath" for a Greek tribute to KISS cd.

The next time we entered the studio in 2008 we recorded the songs "Mask of gold" and "X-Dreamer" that first released as a special limited edition cd of 100 hand numbered copies  for the Japanese market and some months later as a 7" for the European market through High Roller Records.

This time the songs had a more dark feeling... even though "Mask of gold" was a song written in 1999 and "X-Dreamer" was about to be recorded for the 12"… but anyway… this 7" gave us more popularity, even I had an invitation for interview and photo-shooting for a major Greek weekly magazine that sells thousands of copies!!

This 7" for me was a reward of my hard work all these years. I succeed in all the plans I had all these years.

Fans really supported this release, not only buying the 7" but also get our t-shirts. Reviews were again amazing with the exception of one from a Greek asshole.

After the release of the 7" we had a lot of plans to give some more concerts and record the full album. But nothing happened because of bad luck: line up changes, diseases and accidents, cancelling an opening slot for OMEN, ready to open for WHIPLASH and WHIPLASH cancelling the tour and these type of crappy things were happening.

Line-up 2007 - 2010

And finally we come to July 2010.Then we stared recording the whole album again from the start and took more than one year to complete the recordings, up to it's release in April 2012.As you understand this is the album that everybody was expecting from 2008!!

So far we have a lot of positive feedback!! Seems that fellow metalheads who got the album really liked! I have red two reviews so far both of them are great!

This time I see a really strong interest from Brazilian metalheads! I personally spoke with them in my Facebook page and I am really amazed how much you like my music and how much warm and supportive people you are! I really appreciate!! I wish we have the chance to play someday there!

RtM: As you analyze the musical maturity seen in the above mentioned two EPs, and Full-length “Through Space And Time"?

Nick Banger: Well... year by year I think I am becoming better as a singer and composer. I am not considering myself as a good guitar player because I am very lazy to practice even though I am the main composer of METALMORFOSIS music. The songs on the new album are basically old, some of them date back in 1996. All of our releases have many similarities and many differences as well. I guess our fans can give a better answer than me here.

Brand new album released this year

RtM: And the distribution of the new album is being made on all continents? How's touring schedule?

Nick Banger: Yes, we have worldwide distribution! With a simple internet search I had seen the new album in almost every corner of the world!! We are very lucky that our record label does such a good job!!

At this very moment we do not have any plans for giving live shows… let alone touring. For me this very moment is good for promote the new album through interviews and personal conversations with the fans.

RtM: The current economic times in Greece is not very good, is not it? How has it affected the lives of headbangers, with issue frequency of shows that will dock in your country, etc?

Nick Banger: Sadly the current situation in Greece is really crappy and miserable. Faults that politicians made for decades, stealing the money of the hard working simple citizen and feeding him with lies reached now to this living nightmare. Of course everyone's life is affected here. More and more people losing their jobs every day, losing their hope. Many of the metal fans here now do not have money to spend as they use to spend before for buying albums or to go to the metal bars or attend concerts. Sadly I am included in this list.

RtM: In our previous conversations before this interview, you showed yourself a real Brazilian metal's fan... Tell us how you met the Brazilian heavy metal and what your favorite bands.

Nick Banger: I like this question! It was 1989 when I got SEPULTURA "Beneath the remains" original tape!! What an awesome album!! This was the first Brazilian metal band I ever listened to! They were very famous here and "Inner Self” video clip was even played by the Greek television! When they released “Arise” they gave a memorable show in Athens!! In early 90s I discovered bands like VIPER, ASTAROTH, OVERDOSE, SARCOFAGO which I was lucky enough to find their vinyls here in Athens!! During the years I collected more Brazilian metal like two amazing compilation LPs called S.P. METAL which in my opinion include some of the best metal from Brazil! The list continues with STRESS, ALTA TENSAO, A CHAVE DO SOL, AZUL LIMAO VULCANO ect… but the sure thing is that I need more LPs!

It's hard to pick up a favorite... I would possibly say SEPULTURA because they were the first I've listened from Brazil… but I love also the first two LPs from VIPER! Hard to choose!
