Entrevista: Secret Rule - "Continuamos a Fazer Música, Como Sempre Fizemos"

O Secret Rule foi fundado na Itália, em 2013, e faz um Metal moderno, mixando riffs pesados e melódicos, incursões de elementos sinfônicos e eletrônicos, aliados aos vocais de Angela Di Vicenzo, construíram uma identidade musical forte.   (English Version)

A banda também possui um planejamento bem elaborado, que a permite lançar praticamente um álbum por ano, apesar de todas as dificuldades do mercado atual, e início desta ano lançou "Against", via Pride & Joy Music.

A pandemia mundial, em que a área de shows e entretenimento foi bastante afetada, modificou um pouco e postergou alguns planos. Mas o Secret Rule não parou, e nesse tempo de isolamento e quarentena, seguiram planejando e divulgando seu trabalho, inclusive até lançando mais um álbum! "Quarantine Sessions - The Other Side of Us", com versões de músicas de artistas que os integrantes gostam.

Conversamos com Angela Di Vicenzo, que nos contou um pouco mais sobre os novos álbuns, a maneira que a banda trabalha, cuidando de vários detalhes além da composição e produção, como mídias sociais, agendamentos de shows e etc, comentou também sobre o mercado musical, e claro, como foi ou está sendo esse período de pandemia na Itália, país que foi bastante atingido, tendo sido necessário medidas como um Lock Down. Confira a seguir:

RtM: Falando sobre o trabalho mais recente, "Against", a cada álbum a banda mostra novidades. Para você, quais são as principais mudanças em "Against"? Pessoalmente, senti que há mais peso nas músicas, os teclados também estão mais presentes.

Angela: Oi Carlos, sim, "Against" é a evolução natural do nosso som. Certamente, é um pouco mais pesado e agressivo e há mais sons industriais nele. A verdadeira novidade é que cuidamos de toda a produção deste CD por nós mesmos. Pensamos, escrevemos, gravamos, mixamos e masterizamos tudo nós mesmos. Criamos os gráficos, preparamos as fotos, cada detalhe foi tratado por nós. Foi um grande desafio, mas agora estamos totalmente satisfeitos com isso.

"Achamos limitante quando nos descrevem como Metal Sinfônico"

RtM: O primeiro single foi "Purgatory", que também ganhou um vídeo. Comente mais sobre essa música e por que vocês a escolheram para o primeiro single?

Angela: Queríamos algo diferente. Muitas vezes, nos últimos anos, as pessoas que descrevem nosso som nos descrevem como metal sinfônico. Achamos um pouco limitante, certamente há muitas atmosferas sinfônicas em nossa música, mas não apenas essas. O riffing é mais agressivo e totalmente diferente das bandas sinfônicas, usamos muitos loops eletrônicos e sons industriais ... estes não é exatamente o que você encontra na música sinfônica. Então, o "Purgatory" foi a música certa para marcar que algo havia mudado. Esta mensagem foi principalmente para outras pessoas, não para nós ... porque continuamos a fazer música como sempre fizemos.

RtM: Duas das minhas favoritas no álbum são "Against" e "Deep Solitude", que tem belas melodias e um refrão cativante. Eu gostaria que você nos contasse um pouco mais sobre eles e a inspiração para as letras.

Angela: "Against" também é uma das minhas favoritas. O novo álbum começou a partir dessa música e conceito, na verdade, também é o título do álbum. Eu sofro com este mundo, esta sociedade. Não consigo entender como é possível ver tanta violência, racismo e injustiça e como tudo é sempre guiado por dinheiro e poder. Voltando à questão da manipulação da sociedade, tudo é filtrado por todas as formas de mídia e, pior ainda, pelas redes sociais. Então essa música é o meu grito, convidando as pessoas a serem mais fortes, para que possam encarar essa vida todos os dias e lutar pela liberdade.

"Deep Solitude", é sobre a dificuldade que temos em entender nossos sentimentos. Por isso, muitas vezes acabamos machucando as pessoas que mais amamos. Nós somos complicados. Muitas vezes caímos em nossa solidão, incompreendidos, incapazes de formar e manter relacionamentos, mas nosso silêncio é o grito mais alto quando precisamos pedir atenção.

RtM: A mudança de selo parece ter aberto novas portas, a banda tendo um tratamento melhor, vários vídeos, lançando álbuns regularmente, até tivemos uma edição limitada especial de "Against". Eu gostaria que você comentasse sobre isso e a viabilidade das bandas continuarem lançando novos álbuns, porque elas nem sempre têm retorno quando se autofinanciam ou não têm o apoio adequado de uma gravadora.

Angela: Hoje, se você quer ser músico, tem que vir de uma família rica! (risos)

Essa é a realidade das coisas. Tudo o que fazemos, fazemos sozinhos. Como eu disse, cuidamos de tudo e pagamos por tudo. Os selos hoje oferecem pouca ajuda para distribuição, nada mais.

Por exemplo, a promoção nos webzines e revistas não é tão importante hoje em dia, porque na maioria das situações, os escritores são jovens que trabalham de graça ou com pouco dinheiro, sem formação musical, sem cultura musical e seu álbum termina sendo analisado por pessoas com dezoito anos e que, em um bom número de casos, ouvem um gênero musical diferente do que você toca. Felizmente, também existem escritores profissionais, mas ficou difícil para eles também trabalharem. 

Hoje, uma banda antes de ser uma banda deve ser um gerente de mídia social especialista, um gerente de música especialista, um promotor especialista e um booker, então você pode ser um músico. O mundo está indo nessa direção e aqueles que não estão preparados para isso terão uma vida difícil.

RtM: É uma realidade totalmente diferente daquele tempo em que gravadoras investiam muito dinheiro.

Angela: Nós fazemos um álbum por ano porque queremos fazer isso. Com ou sem gravadora. Nos últimos anos, encontramos uma boa pessoa como a proprietária da Pride & Joy Music, ela é uma das poucas pessoas corretas nesse mercado de música, certamente é muito importante ... mas só com isso, você não pode sobreviver neste mundo. Não é o suficiente.

Planejamos nossa atividade ano após ano ... sabemos exatamente o que faremos nos próximos 12 meses. Esse é o nosso segredo. Planejamento, programação, trabalhando duro todos os dias, a cada hora.

RtM: Vocês lançaram recentemente o álbum "Quarantine Sessions - The Other Side of Us", com versões de músicas de artistas que você gosta. Conte-nos um pouco sobre como surgiu a idéia e como foi o processo de gravação.

Angela: Durante a quarentena, planejamos lançar alguns vídeos com alguns covers. Quando lançamos a cover do Ozzy ("Gets me Through") e "The Bitter End" do Placebo, recebemos muitos pedidos de nossos fãs que nos pediram para lançar um álbum inteiro de covers. Por isso, pensávamos que só o faríamos se conseguíssemos em duas semanas ... antes que a quarentena terminasse, caso contrário, não faria sentido.

Então, escolhemos as outras músicas e começamos a trabalhar imediatamente na produção ... e em duas semanas estávamos prontos para lançar o álbum. Foi auto-produzido e auto-lançado. Sobre a produção, foi bastante fácil para nós, porque cada um de nós tem seu próprio estúdio e no final das sessões o Andy mixou e masterizou tudo. Então, tudo foi muito divertido.

RtM: E nesse álbum, quais músicas você mais curtiu cantar e por quê?

Angela: É difícil escolher, porque todas as músicas são muito diferentes. Certamente eu gosto de "Not Afraid" porque gosto de sua energia e foi um desafio para mim cantá-la. Eu não sou uma rapper! (risos) Eu amo "Back to Black" porque amo muito essa música! "I Think I'm Paranoid" é tão enérgica e rock, como "The Bitter End" também! "The Swan Song" porque eu amo a voz de Sharon (Within Temptation), e me diverti cantando essa música com uma abordagem diferente em relação à versão original. Mas no final, eu gosto de todas as músicas!

RtM: Bem, é impossível não perguntar como você se sente ao passar por esse "clima de guerra" na Itália. Conte-nos um pouco sobre como foram esses dias e a rotina por aí.

Angela: Não diria um clima de guerra, há muito silêncio. Todo mundo está vivendo sua vida trancado em casa, com sua família, passando o tempo com todas as coisas que não tiveram tempo de fazer durante a vida cotidiana. Eu fiz o mesmo. Estou passando mais tempo com meus gatos Posi & Nega, comecei a cozinhar muitos bolos diferentes e trabalhei muito mais na Secret Rule.

Não sei se esse vírus foi criado ou se realmente foi um acidente, nem é difícil acreditar em nenhuma explicação. Mas esse foi outro grande desafio que a humanidade foi chamada a enfrentar. Houve pessoas estúpidas (vi pessoas cuspirem em outras para aterrorizá-las, ameaçando infecções e ameaçando aquelas que não queriam seguir todas as regras), mas também muita solidariedade e, certamente, quero ver o lado positivo da situação. A pandemia, aquela que levou as pessoas a cuidar de si mesmas. Neste momento, estamos voltando à normalidade e esperamos retornar completamente à normalidade para sempre.

RtM: E o que você fez para passar o tempo, para manter a sanidade física e mental?

Angela: Eu me sinto bem em casa. Eu assisti filmes, brinquei com meus gatos e trabalhei com a banda em novas estratégias. Como sempre temos pressa, aproveitamos todo esse tempo para planejar os próximos passos da melhor maneira possível. Comecei a me exercitar todos os dias para me manter em forma e me sinto muito melhor!

RtM: E como você vê a situação de bandas e músicos em geral agora com essa parada, sem fazer shows. E acho que ainda não há perspectiva de retorno nos próximos meses.

Angela: Certamente é um momento difícil. Para nós, é difícil porque perdemos o palco e o contato com nossos fãs. A troca de energia é o melhor lado de ser músico. Tivemos que adiar nossas turnês e esperamos poder fazê-las em setembro e dezembro. No início da pandemia, eu vi muitas bandas expressando suas dificuldades financeiras, mas depois de um tempo, todas começaram a transmitir shows e encontraram outras maneiras de se conectar com seus fãs.

A chance de encontrar outra maneira de se expressar também se mostrou uma forma de arte, seja streaming de shows, atividades on-line, inventando um novo emprego etc.). Como em qualquer mercado e empresa, uma banda precisa aceitar o risco do negócio e encontrar outras maneiras de sobreviver. Eu acho que é normal.

RtM: Você assistiu muitos filmes e séries durante a quarentena? Qual você recomenda?

Angela: Eu me apaixonei por "La casa de Papel", é claro, e "Vis a Vis", que eu assisti durante toda a pandemia. Gostei muito da atriz "Najwa Nimri" presente nas duas séries. Então eu assisti "Glitch", mas acho que é apenas para certas pessoas. Enfim, gostei. Então, se você não viu "Vis a Vis", comece logo! (risos)

RtM: Hahaha, ok, eu vi alguns episódios, mas prometo que vou retomar. Você assistiu o filme "Rocket Man"? Um momento muito legal é quando Wilson diz ao jovem Elton John que "você precisa matar a pessoa em que nasceu para se tornar a pessoa que deseja ser". o que você pensa a respeito? O que a música mudou em você?

Angela: Uau! Isso é verdade! Quando comecei a cantar, por volta dos quinze anos, lembro-me de que era muuuuito tímida. Antes de subir ao palco, eu tinha que correr para o banheiro ... às vezes eu também vomitava antes. No palco, eu ficava quase bloqueada. Mas eu queria ser diferente porque adorava cantar. Então, dia após dia, eu tive que matar meus "limites" e me forçar a vencer minha timidez, meus medos. Quando olhava para grandes cantoras como Cristina Scabbia ou Sharon Den Adel, ficava muito encantada com sua naturalidade e espontaneidade. Foi um processo longo e eu sempre continuo trabalhando isso.

Interview: Secret Rule - "We Just Continue to Make Music, as We Have Always Done".

Secret Rule was founded in Italy, in 2013, and makes modern Metal, mixing heavy and melodic riffs, incursions of symphonic and electronic elements, combined with Angela Di Vicenzo's vocals, have built a strong musical identity.  (Versão em português)

The world pandemic, in which the area of ​​concerts and entertainment was greatly affected, changed a little and postponed some plans. But Secret Rule did not stop, and in this time of isolation and quarantine, they continued to plan and publicize their work, including even releasing another album! "Quarantine Sessions - The Other Side of Us", with versions of songs by artists that the members like.

We have talked with Angela Di Vicenzo, who told us a little more about the new albums, the way the band works, taking care of various details in addition to composition and production, such as, promotional photos, social media, booking and etc., also commented on the music market, and of course, how was this pandemic period in Italy, a country that was hit hard, and measures such as a Lock Down were necessary. Check it out below:

RtM: Talking about the most recent work, "Against", with each album the band shows news, what are the main changes in against for the others? I personally felt that more weight was put into the songs, keyboards are also more present.

Angela Di Vicenzo: Hi Carlos, yes, "Against" is the natural evolution of our sound. Surely, it's a bit more heavy and aggressive and there are more industrial sounds on this one. The real news is that we took care of the whole production of this CD by ourselves. We thought, wrote, recorded, mixed, and mastered everything by ourselves. We created the graphics, prepared the photos, every little detail was handled by us. It was a great challenge, but now we are fully satisfied with it.

RtM: The first single was "Purgatory", which also won a video. Comment more about this song and why you chose it for the first single?

Angela: We wanted something different. Often in recent years, people to describe our sound put us near symphonic metal. We found it a bit limiting, surely there are a lot of symphonic atmospheres in our music, but not only those. The riffing is more aggressive and totally different from symphonic bands, we use a lot of electronic loops and industrial sounds...these are not exactly what you find in symphonic music.  So, Purgatory was the right song to mark that something had changed. This message was mostly for other people, not for us...because we just continue to make music as we have always done.

RtM: Two of my favorites are "Against" and "Deep Solitude", which has beautiful melodies and a catchy chorus. I would like you to tell us a little more about them and the inspiration for the lyrics.

Angela: Against is one of my favorite ones too. The new album started from that song and concept, in fact, it's also the album title. I suffer this world, this society. I can't understand how it’s possible to see so much violence, racism and injustice, and how everything is always guided by money and power. Getting back to the matter of the manipulation of society, everything is filtered through all media forms and worse still through the social networks. So this song is my scream inviting people to be stronger so they can face this life every day and fight for freedom.

Deep Solitude is about the difficulty we have in understanding our feelings. Because of this, we often end up hurting the people we love most. We're complicated. So often we fall into our solitude, misunderstood, unable to form and maintain relationships, but our silence is the loudest scream we have to ask for attention.

RtM: The label Change seems to have opened new doors, the band having a better treatment, several videos, releasing albums regularly, we even had a special limited edition of "Against". I would like you to comment on this and the viability of the bands to continue launching new albums, because they do not always get a return when they self-finance, or do not have adequate support from a label.

Angela: Today, if you wanna be a musician you have to come from a  rich family! (laughs)

This is the reality of things. Everything we do, we do by ourselves. As I said to you, we take care of everything and we pay for everything. Labels today, they offer very little help for distribution, nothing else.

For example, promotion on the webzines and magazines is not so important these days, because in most situations, the writers are very young people who work for free or for little money, without a musical background, without a musical culture, and your album ends up being reviewed by guys who are eighteen and who in a good number of cases listen to a different musical genre from what you play. Fortunately, there are also professional writers but it has become hard for them too to work.

Today, a band before being a band must be an expert social media manager, an expert music manager, an expert promoter, and a booker then you can be a musician. The World is going in this direction and those who are not prepared for this, will have a hard life.

We make one album per year because we want to do it. With or without a label. In the past few years we found a good person in the owner of Pride & Joy Music, she's one of the few correct people in this music market, surely it's very important...but with only this, you can't survive in this World. It’s not enough.

So, we plan our activity year after year...we know exactly what we'll do in the next 12 months. This is our secret. Planning, scheduling, working hard every day, every hour.

RtM: You have released recently the album "Quarantine Sessions – The Other Side of Us", with versions of songs by artists that you like. Tell us a little about how the idea came about and how the recording process went.

Angela: During the quarantine, we planned to release a couple of videos of cover songs. When we released the Ozzy cover ("Gets me through") and Placebo's "The bitter end", we received a lot of requests from our fans who asked us to release a whole album of cover songs. So, we thought we would only if we were able to do it in two weeks...before the Quarantine ended otherwise it wouldn't have made sense.  

So, we chose the other songs and started immediately working on production...and in two weeks we were ready to release the album. It was self-produced and self-released. About the production, it was easy enough for us, because every one of us has their own studio and at the end of the sessions...Andy mixed and mastered it. So, everything was really fun.

RtM: And from this album, which songs did you like to do the most and why?

Angela: It's difficult to choose because all songs are so different. Surely I like "Not Afraid" because I like its energy and it has been a challenge for me to sing it. I'm not a rapper! LOL I love "Back to Black" because I love that song so much!

"I think I'm Paranoid" is so energic and rock, like "The Bitter End" too! "The Swan Song" because I love Sharon's voice and I had fun in singing that song with a different approach in respect to the original version. But at the end, I like all the songs!

RtM: Well, it's impossible not to ask how do you feel to have to go through this war climate there in Italy. Tell us a little about how these days have been and the routine there?

Angela: It's not a war climate, there is a lot of silence instead. Everyone is living their life locked in at home, with their family, spending their time with all those things they didn't have time to do during their ordinary life. I did the same. I'm spending more time with my cats Posi& Nega, I started to cook a lot of different cakes, and I worked much more on Secret Rule. 

I don't know if this virus was created or if it really was an accident, neither explanation is difficult for me to believe. But this has been another great challenge humanity has been called to face. There have been stupid people (I have seen people spit on other people to terrify people by threatening infection and those who didn't want to follow all rules) but also a lot of solidarity and surely, I want to see the positive side of the pandemic, the one which has moved people to take care of themselves. At this moment we're getting back to normality and we hope to return completely to normality for good.

RtM: And what have you been doing to pass the time, to maintain physical and mental sanity?

Angela: I feel good at home. I watched movies, I played with my cats and I worked with Secret Rule on new strategies. We're always in a hurry so we took advantage of all this time to plan the next steps to the best of our abilities. I started to exercise every day to keep in shape and I feel much better!

RtM: And how do you see the situation of bands and musicians in general now with this stop, without doing shows. And I think there is still no prospect of a return in the coming months.

Angela: Surely it's a difficult moment. For us, it's difficult because we miss the stage and the contact with our fans. The exchange of energy is the best side of being musicians. We had to postpone our tours and we hope we'll be able to do them in September and December. 

At the beginning of the pandemic, I saw a lot of bands expressing their money difficulties but after a while, all bands started streaming concerts and found other ways to connect with their fans. The chance to find another way to express oneself has also proved an art form, be it streaming concerts, online activities, inventing a new job, etc). As in any market and any company, a band has to accept the business risk and find other ways to survive. I think it's normal.

RtM: Have you been watching many movies and series during the quarantine? Which do you recommend?

Angela: I fell in love with "La casa de Papel" of course and "Vis a Vis" that I've been watching all during the pandemic. I liked a lot the actress "Najwa Nimri" present in both the series. Then I watched "Glitch", but I think it's only for certain people. Anyway, I liked it. So if you haven’t seen "Vis a Vis", you should start with that :)

RtM: Ha ha ha!ok, i saw just some episodes, but i promise i will watch. Did you watch the movie "Rocket Man"? A really cool moment is when Wilson  sayds to young Elton John that "  You gotta kill the person you were born to be in order to become the person you want to be." what do you think about? What has the music changed about you?

Angela: Wow! That’s so true! When I started to sing, around age fifteen, I remember that I was soooo shy. Before going on stage, I had to run to the toilet…sometimes I also vomited beforehand. On stage, I was almost blocked. But I wanted to be different because I loved singing so much. So, day after day, I had to kill my "limits" and force myself to beat my shyness, my fears. When I looked at great singers like Cristina Scabbia or Sharon Den Adel, I remained so enchanted by their naturalness and spontaneity. It has been a long process and I always keep working on myself.

Entrevista - Secret Rule: Melodic Metal, Talento, Criatividade, e a Sociedade Vítima da "Maquinação"

A beleza e a graça deste cenário musical é que, mesmo diante de vários obstáculos, como fatores econômicos, locais e de tendências, além da grande quantidade de grupos batalhando pelo seu espaço, sempre surgem novo nomes, com novas ideias, buscando fazer música com qualidade e identidade, e com esse pensamento, o SECRET RULE, natural de Roma (Itália), chega ao seu segundo álbum, "Machination" (Scarlet Records) (com o título e a primeira faixa inspirados no tema do filme "Ex-Machina", confirmando as boas expectativas de sua estreia em 2014, com "Transposed Emotions" (Rock Sector Records), e trazendo ainda mais personalidade, além de um line-up novo, com a adição de músicos já conhecidos no cenário, como Sander Zoer(Bateria, Ex-Delain) e Henrik Klingenberg (Teclados, Sonata Arctica), além de convidados especiais em algumas faixas.   (READ THE ENGLISH VERSION)

Conversamos com a adorável e talentosa Angela Di Vicenzo (que é uma vocalista que está num nível pelo menos próximo a nomes como Anneke ou sua conterrânea Cristina Sccabia), que nos  contou um pouco mais sobre a banda, o novo álbum, um pouco da sua carreira e as aspirações e expectativas do Secret Rule, certamente uma grata nova surpresa no cenário Metálico, com uma sonoridade criativa, cativante e letras de conteúdo! RtM: Olá Angela, obrigado pela sua atenção, e parabéns para o novo CD! Vamos falar sobre o novo álbum, "Machination", e mais algumas coisas sobre você e o Secret Rule? Para os leitores também conhecerem mais sobre vocês.

Angela Di Vicenzo: Olá Carlos! Claro, é um prazer falar com você.

RtM: Para este novo álbum, a banda teve mudanças em sua formação, com Sander Zoer (Ex-Delain) e Henrik (Sonata Arctica) agora na banda, que na minha opinião contribuíram muito no som novo álbum. Conte-nos um pouco mais como surgiu a oportunidade de tê-los na banda e o que eles acrescentaram em termos musicais?

Angela: Após o primeiro álbum, continuamos a ter problemas com o baterista. Eu tive contato com Sander Zoer e perguntei-lhe se ele estava interessado em tocar como convidado no nosso álbum. Enviei-lhe toda a pré-produção do álbum, e ele daí propôs-nos a tocar todas as músicas! Nós ficamos muito felizes com a proposta e tão animados que pensamos em tentar procurar também um tecladista! Então entramos em contato com Henrik e perguntamos se ele nos daria o prazer de tê-lo em nosso álbum, como convidado em uma música, ou tocar em todo o álbum se ele estivesse de acordo. Ele ficou feliz em fazer todo o álbum, então ele tocou todos os teclados, menos os loops eletrônicos, que foram feitos por Andy (Andy fez todas as partes de teclado no primeiro álbum). Foi incrível ouvir as músicas depois de adicionada a participação deles. 

RtM: Sim, um ótimo trabalho dos dois, e há toda a experiência de ambos.

Angela: Um trabalho incrível! Eles adicionaram um grande valor no álbum, mas a coisa mais importante para nós foi que eles acreditaram em nós. Eles gravaram as partes, cada um no próprio estúdio. Então, no final de dezembro, os conhecemos na Holanda durante a filmagem do vídeo da música "The Saviour" e foi emocionante compartilhar essa experiência todos juntos. Eles são pessoas muito profissionais, mas também simples, foi como se fôssemos amigos há muito tempo.

RtM: Falando sobre o novo álbum, "Machination", gostaria que você nos falasse sobre a escolha deste tema para o título, e também sobre a primeira faixa, "Ex Machina", onde inclusive observamos que alguns efeitos trazem um clima "mecânico", vejo que você se inspirou na sociedade de hoje, onde parece que as relações entre as pessoas hoje em dia são mais frias e distantes, presas em redes sociais.

Angela: A faísca que acendeu minha inspiração foi o filme "Ex-Machina". A primeira faixa do álbum é sobre ele, e o tema principal gira em torno da sociedade atual. Uma sociedade baseada na aparência, onde muitas pessoas estão nessa corrida para se manter jovem. Uma sociedade onde quem tem o poder tem o controle de todos os instrumentos de nosso uso diário, e através deles recolhe maior número de dados possíveis sobre nossas ações, movimentos, hábitos. Eu poderia dizer que o valor destas bases de dados está tomando o lugar do petróleo!

RtM: Tens toda razão! Nossa vida está exposta na internet! Algo que eu queria comentar também, é a bela capa do álbum, eu gostaria que você falasse mais sobre ela e sobre os elementos ali presentes, os dois espelhos, a engrenagem, asas negras ... etc.

Angela: Normalmente damos uma prévia do álbum para a nossa designer gráfica Simona Saccoccia, e ficamos à espera para ver suas propostas. Desta vez, quando ela ouviu o álbum, imediatamente ela imaginou uma figura feminina principal posicionada para fora dos espelhos, enquanto sua imagem está desmoronando no espelho, símbolo da vaidade e aparência, alguns dos males da sociedade. Ela está consciente de sua posição, ela sabe que foi presa a partir de um mecanismo que faz os seres humanos dar importância ao trivial. Em seguida, encontramos uma natureza feita de árvores que nasceram a partir de uma placa-mãe, algo programado por alguém que manipula o mundo e esconde as jaulas para nos prender. Atrás deste elemento existe uma grande roda de engrenagem que move tudo isso, Machination. Também essa roda dentada está desmoronando, porque a mulher está livre agora e nos mostra o que é a verdade. 


RtM: Ficou muito bonita e bem pensada. E você fez o papel de modelo também!
Angela: Foi Simona que pensou em usar a minha imagem para a mulher na arte da capa, ela veio na minha casa com roupas e a câmera para me fotografar. Ela tinha tudo em sua mente!

Esta arte da capa é rica de elementos, mas você acredita que, ao invés de observar esses elementos todos, um redator (de outro webzine) só olhou para os meus peitos, e ele definiu a arte da capa como "uma capa safada" ... Eu me pergunto, quem é realmente "sujo"? Homem.... pobre vítima da "maquinação"! (risos)

RtM: Nossa! (risos) É, infelizmente existem pessoas "sem noção"! Bem, vamos falar sobre as novas músicas? A canção "The Saviour", que também foi a primeira faixa de divulgação e vídeo, é uma que tem elementos que estão mais presente neste novo álbum, andamentos vibrantes, músicas mais rápidas, como a "Short Stories" e "You’re the Player", com grandes refrãos e melodias cativantes. Eu gostaria que você comentasse sobre essas faixas.

Angela: Eu acho que o "amor" é uma coisa muito complicada!!! Assim, em "Short Stories", imaginei todas aquelas pessoas que não acreditam mais no amor e escolhem viver apenas o momento sem títulos. Um hitcher de emoções, que, quando encontra alguém, leva o que pode e, em seguida, ele/ela já terá esquecido sua/seu nome e rosto.

Em  “You’re the Player ("Você é o jogador") A mensagem é simples: Alguma vezes você pergunta a si mesmo, se você está fazendo tudo o que pode para obter o que você deseja. Nesta canção eu desejei dar às pessoas a força para alcançar os seus sonhos, sem nunca se render.


RtM: E "The Saviour" e o vídeo, que inclusive no final tem uma mensagem que diz: "Dedicado a todos aquelas pessoas que perderam seu futuro, o seu sonho, a sua própria vida, em nome de nada".

Angela: “The Saviour” ("O Salvador") é uma canção que eu escrevi depois do ataque ao Bataclan. Obviamente, há muitas pessoas que a cada dia perdem a sua vida por diferentes razões que não posso aceitar, mas na ocasião, pensei em todas as pessoas que estavam ali para passar uma noite agradável com a música (eu me senti mais emocionalmente envolvida) e foram mortos de uma maneira muito brutal, isso me tocou. Assim, a frase ao final do vídeo é dedicada à todas aquelas pessoas que todos os dias perdem a sua vida (e seus sonhos, seu futuro) por causa do interesse de um poder estúpido, uma razão que eu não posso aceitar.

RtM: "Foolish Daisy" também traz novos elementos, e está entre minhas favoritos também, traz Janneke de Rooy nos vocais guturais, e um excelente trabalho nos riffs,  e a música têm variações muito legais e interessantes. Eu também gostaria que você falasse mais sobre ela.

Angela: No início, as partes guturais foram feitas pelo Andy, que as cantou (de uma maneira horrível) só de brincadeira. Mas quando Sander Zoer ouviu as mixagens, propôs-nos a mantê-las e contatar Janneke De Rooy pra cantar, e assim foi. Sou muito ligada a esta canção. Eu a escrevi em 2005. Eu dedico esta canção a todos aqueles que não conseguem aceitar-se como são, e procuram se tornar outra pessoa. Então fiz a comparação entre uma margarida (Foolish Daisy), que sonha ser uma rara rosa negra, mas que ela é especial e única, e sem ela os amantes não podem brincar com o coração (bem me quer, mal me quer...). Cada um de nós é especial e tem uma razão de ser no mundo.

RtM:  "I Will" e "I Have the Sun" também estão entre minhas favoritas, embora eu realmente tenha gostado todo o álbum. A primeira tem bases de guitarra pesadas e teclados incríveis; já a segunda recordou-me um pouco de Lacuna Coil, e é uma música moderna com elementos eletrônicos muito bem colocados, e grandes linhas vocais (bem, algo que se repete em todo o álbum), e vejo que são bons exemplos para quem quer conhecer a banda, música moderna, criativa e com várias surpresas.

Angela: Bom, "I Will" eu escrevi em um momento preciso da minha vida, quando toda a minha família insistia em me perguntar quando eu pararia com a música e começaria uma família. Então, eu sempre respondia: "Sim, um dia eu vou", foi engraçado ver seus rostos!! (Obviamente eu não vou parar com a música, é minha vida).

Eu amo muito "I Have the Sun", eu adoro a atmosfera dark que saiu. Realmente nesta canção eu imaginava alienígenas! Quando eu era uma criança eu vivi experiências estranhas durante a noite, e eu pensava que talvez elas fossem causadas ​​por alienígenas. Alienígenas que tentavam roubar a sua "alma", a única coisa que eles não tinham.

RtM: Poderíamos falar individualmente de cada canção, mas, para concluir, gostaria de mencionar mais duas em que senti bastante emoção na sua mensagem e vocais, "The Image", que tem sido elegida por muitos como um dos destaques do álbum,  e "A Mother" em linhas vocais realmente comoventes e belas. 

Angela: Estou muito satisfeita com "The Image", eu experimentei pela primeira vez uma nova maneira de cantar, especialmente nas estrofes e eu estava realmente animada quando saiu o refrão! Nesta canção eu pensei em todos aqueles adolescentes que não aceitam a sua imagem, é muito difícil se tornarem adultos.

"A Mother" é uma canção que escrevi para o minha melhor amiga, é como uma irmã para mim. Nós nos conhecemos em um período difícil para nós, portanto, imediatamente nos tornamos amigas. Passamos um ano quase todos os dias juntas. Em seguida, ela se tornou mãe de uma criança maravilhosa e não temos mais tempo para passar juntas como antes, mas nossa ligação vai ser muito forte para sempre.

RtM: E ainda "The Trap", que tem muitos elementos eletrônicos, e você usa  linhas "agressivas" e com um pouco de sensualidade e sarcasmo, mostrando toda a sua versatilidade, sempre transmitindo o clima da música para o ouvinte.

Angela: Quando eu escutei o instrumental da música "The Trap" eu disse a Andy: "Você está louco? (risos) Mas a música era muito divertida, então eu tentei colocar uma melodia e saiu com uma voz um pouco sensual, por isso, então, eu pensei em uma letra apropriada. Pensei em todas essas mulheres astutas que pegam os homens menos espertos em sua armadilha! : D

"Nós ouvimos diferentes tipos de música e nós amamos misturar tudo isso, e às vezes, quando ouvimos uma demo que acabamos de fazer, nós dizemos 'Oh meu Deus! Não é muito louco?'"

RtM: Seu primeiro álbum, "Transposed Emotions", já havia essa mistura de elementos de Metal, Progressivo, Eletro e Pop, por exemplo, mas eu acredito que em "Machination" vocês evoluíram, com ainda mais personalidade, o que já mostraram na estreia, e uma das principais diferenças que eu senti é que as músicas estão mais melódicas e cativantes, com linhas ainda mais impressionantes, bem como mais variadas. Eu gostaria que você comentasse sobre isso e as diferenças que você vê entre essas duas obras.

Angela: Basicamente, o primeiro álbum incluiu todas minhas velhas canções que eu escrevi há dez anos, mas nunca encontrei uma banda válida para trabalhar nelas (menos "I Don't Wanna Be", "My Doors" e "The Sin", que eram novas músicas ). Assim, dez anos atrás, eu era uma pessoa diferente, com uma inspiração e habilidades diferentes. O mundo era um pouco diferente também. A produção de "Machination" foi muito emocionante para mim, porque depois de muitos anos eu pude me expressar com minhas habilidades reais e inspirações. Hoje eu estou mais madura do que há dez anos, e em uma canção, a melodia, a letra e a versatilidade da voz faz uma grande diferença.

RtM: Esta variedade e criatividade que encontramos em "Machination" deixa álbum muito especial com cada música trazendo elementos diferentes, dando uma dinâmica, resultando em um trabalho que é um prazer ouvir do início ao fim. Já que mencionou, conte-nos sobre processo de composição do álbum, como funciona o processo criativo dentro da banda.

Angela: Eu acho que o que você escuta em Machination é o resultado de diferentes influências que temos, como eu já lhe disse. Nós ouvimos diferentes tipos de música e nós amamos misturar tudo isso, e às vezes, quando ouvimos uma demo que acabamos de fazer, nós dizemos "Oh meu Deus! Não é muito louco?", Geralmente Andy comanda as ações ... mas com base no que amamos, Metal melódico, melodias do rock tradicional ... por isso a nossa música, provavelmente, terá sempre essa caracterização.

RtM: Eu li uma entrevista na qual você disse: "não é importante quantas notas é possível cantar, mas de quantas maneiras você pode cantar a mesma nota.". Lembrei disso, porque a primeira vez que ouvi a Banda, me chamou muita atenção o seu estilo, cantando com muito sentimento, realmente interpretando cada canção, passando o clima de cada uma. Então, conte-nos um pouco mais sobre como você começou na música como você foi aprimorando seu estilo?

Angela: Quando comecei a estudar canto, cerca de 15 anos atrás, eu tinha uma voz poderosa, mas eu não era capaz de controlar essa força e colocar na minha voz os meus sentimentos. Eu sempre fui muito tímida, mas também tinha muita raiva! Mas quando comecei a estudar com o minha atual Vocal Coach, Francesca Tenuta, ela foi capaz de me fazer trazer para fora todos os meus sentimentos, minha paixão, e ela me mostrou como é possível cantar a mesma nota de maneiras diferentes, em relação ao sentimento que você quer dar para os ouvintes. Então, nós experimentamos muito neste caminho e você pode ouvir o resultado em "Machination".

 "Temos de colher todos os nossos sentimentos mais profundos para expressar a nós mesmos. Não é fácil. Eu acho que é o maior problema para muitos músicos."

RtM: Falando sobre a questão de sentimento, eu vejo um monte de bandas agora se preocupar muito com a técnica, música com produções caras e intrincados instrumentais, mas não consegue fazer uma música que toca o ouvinte, que traz melodias memoráveis ​​ou grandes refrãos. Como você vê a cena musical de hoje? quais os elementos que você acha importantes pra se destacar neste cenário?

Angela: Uau! É uma pergunta difícil. Eu acho que muitas bandas escrevem música com muitos ídolos em sua mente. Isso é bom quando você tem que melhorar a própria técnica, assim como é útil o estudo da composição e dos arranjos de grandes canções (ou a técnica vocal, no meu caso, dos grandes cantores), mas, em seguida, temos de colher todos os nossos sentimentos mais profundos para expressar a nós mesmos. Não é fácil. Eu acho que é o maior problema para muitos músicos. Outro ponto importante é o mercado da música e da maneira em que as majors trabalham. Agora, posso estar falando algo muito banal, mas hoje é mais fácil de empurrar uma banda que é uma cópia de outra mais famosa, em vez de lançar um novo som. Assim, muitos músicos devem pensar que, tocar da mesma forma da outra banda maior é uma maneira mais fácil para chegar ao topo. Talvez você entenda que eu não esteja muito feliz com o cenário :) Mas eu sempre presto muita atenção às novas bandas ou coisas novas.

 

RtM: E que os músicos ou cantores você aponta como influências?

Angela: Eu amo um monte de vozes de diferentes gêneros. Posso dar-lhe estes nomes: Anneke Van Giersbergen, Anouk, as vozes do Anathema (Vincent, Danny e Lee), Alanis Morisette, Dolores O'Riordan, Gwen Stefani, Sharon Den Adel e outros. Então, talvez eu possa ter pego alguma característica deles, mas de qualquer maneira, eu sempre tentei manter minha identidade.

RtM: Legal, mencionou Anneke, gosto muito da maneira, e até facilidade, que ela cria as melodias, e vejo isso em você também. E como o Rock e o Heavy Metal entraram na sua vida?

Angela: Lá pelos meus vinte anos fui morar sozinha em Roma, e eu conheci um cara que me convidou para ir a um concerto de Metal. Era do Stratovarius, e a partir daí eu me apaixonei pela Metal Music!

RtM: Aproveitando que estamos falando sobre como você começou sua carreira na música, conte-nos um pouco sobre como o Secret Rule surgiu.

Angela: Michele e Andy se conhecem desde 1987, e costumavam tocar juntos em uma banda chamada Martiria. Eles tiveram a ideia com o primeiro baterista, de fundar uma nova banda com um som renovado e moderno. Conheci Andy cerca de 12 anos atrás, durante um projeto temporário, onde tive a oportunidade de apreciar o seu talento e sua maneira de tocar. Às vezes, depois disso, Andy sempre me ligava para perguntar se eu estava livre para participar de um projeto juntos, mas eu estava perdendo meu tempo (infelizmente) com outros músicos. Mas eu sabia que, mais cedo ou mais tarde, faríamos alguma coisa juntos e, na verdade, no final de 2013, ele me chamou para falar sobre um novo projeto. Ele me mandou as músicas instrumentais de "I Don't Wanna Be" e "My Doors" e eu fui para o ensaio com as minhas melodias para essas duas músicas. Ele imediatamente amou! Naquela ocasião eu encontrei Michele pela primeira vez também :)

RtM: E as expectativas para o novo álbum, e com este novo line-up, o que vai trazer para a banda no futuro?

Angela: Estamos colocando tudo de nós mesmos neste projeto e estamos trabalhando muito duro o tempo todo. Mas, infelizmente, não depende apenas de nós. Existem gravadoras, promotores, locais, agências de reserva, agências de promoção etc .. Muitos fatores determinam o sucesso. Muitas vezes, muitas bandas perdem muito tempo, longos anos (e dinheiro) em mãos erradas, por isso temos de ter cuidado. Em todo caso, vamos continuar a tocar nossa música para sempre, é nossa droga :)

RtM: Angela foi um prazer, parabéns pelo grande trabalho, tenho certeza que a banda está num ótimo caminho. Deixo este espaço final  para você enviar a sua mensagem aos leitores.

Interview - Secret Rule: Melodic Metal, Talent, Creativity, and the Society Victim of the "Machination"

The beauty and the nice side of this music scene is that, even against various obstacles and factors, such as economic, local and trends, as well as lot of bands struggling for their space, there are always new names, new ideas, trying to make music with quality and identity, and with this kind of thought we have SECRET RULE, from Rome (Italy), that is releasing their second album, "Machination" (Scarlet Records) (with the title and first track inspired by the movie "Ex-Machina"), confirming the high expectations of their debut in 2014, with "Transposed Emotions" ( Rock Records Sector), and bringing even more personality, and a new line-up, with the addition of musicians known on the scene as Sander Zoer (Delain former drummer) and Henrik Klingenberg (keyboards, Sonata Arctica), and special guests on some tracks.    (versão em Português)

We chatted with the lovely and talented Angela Di Vicenzo (who is a vocalist, in my opinion, in a level at least close to names like Anneke or Cristina Sccabia), who told us a bit more about the band, the new album, career and aspirations and Secret Rule's expectations. Certainly a pleasant surprise in the Metal Music's scene with a creative and catchy sounding, and great lyric content! RtM: Hello Angela, thanks for your attention, and congratulations for the new CD! Let’s talk about the new album and some more things about you and Secret Rule?

Angela Di Vicenzo: Hello Carlos! Sure, it's a pleasure to talk with you.

RtM: For this new album, the band had changes in your line up, with Sander Zoer and Henrik now in the band, which in my point of view, have contributed a lot in the new album sound. Tell us a little morehow the opportunity arose to have them in the band, and what they added in musical terms?

Angela: After the first album, we continued to have problems with the drummer. I had a contact with Sander Zoer and speaking with him I asked him if he was interested to play a song as guest on our album. I sent him the whole album in preview and he proposed us to play all songs! We were very happy of this proposal and so excited we thought to try to look for also a real keyboardist! So we contacted Henrik and we asked him if he had the pleasure to play on our album, or as guest on one song or play on the whole album if he was agree. He was happy to play the whole album, so he played all keyboards less the electronic loops made by Andy (Andy took care of all keyboard parts in the first album). It was awesome listening the songs after their job. 

RtM: Yeah, a great job, and, of course, there is the experience of both.

Angela: An incredible job! They have added a great value on the album but the most important thing for us was they have believed in us. They recorded the parts each one in the own studio. Then at the end of December, we met them in Holland during the shooting of the music video "You're the saviour" and it was thrilling doing this experience all together. They were very professional but also simple people, as if we were friends for a long time.

RtM: Talking about the new album, "Machination" I would like you to tell us about the choice of this theme for the title, and also about the first track, "Ex Machina" (listening to the song, we noted some sections and effects that brings a "mechanical" climate), I see that you found inspiration in today's society, where it seems that relations between the people nowadays are more cold and distant, with people arrested in social networks.

Angela: The spark that lighted on my inspiration was the movie "Ex-Machina". The first track of the album is about it and the main theme turns around the actual society. A society based on the appearance where many people are in running to stay young. A society where who has the power has the control of all the instruments for our daily use and through them collects more data is possible about our actions, movements, habits. I could say that the value of these data is taking the place of the oil..

RtM: You're right, our life is all exposed on net! Something I wanted to comment, is the beautiful album cover, I would like you to talk more about it and about the elements present there, the two mirrors, black wings ... etc

Angela: Usually we give a preview of the album to our graphic designer Simona Saccoccia and we stay in wait to seeing her proposals. This time when she listened to the album, immediately she has imagined a "main woman character" positioned out from the mirrors, while her image is crumbling in the mirror, symbol of vanity and appearance, some of evils of this society. She is aware of her position, she knows that she was imprisoned from a mechanisms that brings the humans to give importance to trivial. Then we find a nature made of trees that were born from a motherboard, something programmed from someone, who manipulates the world and hides the cages to entrap us. Behind this element there is a great gearwheel that moves all this, "machination". Also this gearwheel is crumbling because the woman is free now and shows us what is the truth. 

RtM: Very beautiful! And you was a photographic model on the cover art too!

Angela: It was Simona who thought to use my image for the woman on the cover art, she came at my home with clothes and the camera to shoot the picture of me. She had everything in her mind!

This cover art is rich of elements, but you think that instead recently, a reviewer (for another webzine) has only looked at my tits and he defined the cover art "a dirty cover art"... I wonder, who is really "dirty"?  Poor man victim of the “machination”! (lots of laughs)

RtM: I can't believe in some people!!Well, let’s talk about the new songs. The song "The Saviour", which was also the first track and video that you have used to present the album, is one that has elements that, i think, are more present in it, like most vibrant movements, faster songs ( "Short Stories” and “You're The Player” are also in this line), with great chorus and catchy melodies. I would like you to talk about this tracks. 

Angela: I think that the "Love" is a very complicated thing!! LOL!! So, in "Short Stories" I imagined all those people who don't believe anymore in love and choose to live just the moment without bonds. An hitcher of emotions, that when meets someone else, takes what he can and then he/she will have already forgotten his/her name and face.

In "You're the Player" the message is simple: Did you ever ask yourself, if you're doing all you can for obtain what you desire? In this song I would like to give to the people the strenght for reaching out their dreams without never surrender.


RtM: To complementing, in "The Saviour" at the end of the video, also has a message that says "Dedicated to All Those people who have lost Their future, Their dream, Their own life, in the name of nothing."

Angela: "The Saviour" is a song I wrote after the attack to the Bataclan. Obviously there are many people that every day lose their life for different reasons I can't accept but in that occasion, I thought to all those people that were there for passing a nice night with the music (I felt myself more emotionally involved) and were killed in a too brutal way, this touched me. So the sentence to the end of the video is dedicated to all those people that every day lose their life (and so their dreams, their future) because of a stupid power's interest, a reason I can't accept.

RtM: "Foolish Daisy" also brings new elements, and is among my favorites too, brings Janneke de Rooy (from Paper Doll Decay) on  growling vocals, and an excellent work in Riffs, and the music have really cool and interesting variations. I would also like you to talk more about it, including your lyrics
Angela: At the beginning, the growl parts were been thought from Andy and sang by him (in an horrible way) for joking. But when Sander Zoer has listened to the rough mixes, he proposed us to do them sing from Janneke De Rooy and so it was. I'm very attached to this song. I wrote it in 2005. I dedicate this song to all those who fail to accept themselves as they are and looking to become someone else. So I do a compare between a foolish daisy that dreams to be a rare black rose, telling her that she is special and unique and without her the lovers can't play with their heart (loves me, doesn't love me..love me, doesn't love me...). Each of us is special and has a reason to be in the world.

RtM: I would like also to comment on "I Will" and "I Have the Sun" are also among my favorites, although I really liked the whole album. The first has very heavy sections, and incredible  keyboards; already the second reminded me a little Lacuna Coil, and is a modern music with electronic elements very well placed, and great vocal lines (well, something recurs throughout the album), and I see that are good examples for who wants to know the band, modern  music, creative and with several surprises
Angela: I wrote "I will" in a precise moment of my life when all my family continued to ask me when I would stopped with the music and I would started a family. So I always answered "Yes, I will" but it was funny to see their faces. (Obviously I won't stop with the music, is my life).

I love a lot "I have the sun", I love the dark atmosphere that came out. Really in this song I imagined of the aliens. Since I was a child I lived strange experiences during the night and I wanted think that maybe they could be caused right from the aliens. The aliens that try to steal the "soul", the only thing they don't have.

RtM: We could talk individually to each track, but to conclude, I would like to mention two in which you show a lot of emotion, "The Image" and "Mother" in vocal lines really touching and beautiful, and "The Trap", which has many electronic elements , and you use more  "aggressive" lines and a certain sarcasm and sensuality, showing all your versatility, always conveying the mood of the song to the listener.

Angela: I'm very satisfied of "The Image", I experimented for the first time a new way to sing, especially on the strophes and I was really excited when is came out the refrain! In this song I thought to all those teens who don't accept their image, it's very difficult become adults.

"A mother" is a song I wrote for my best friend, like a sister for me. We met in a difficult period for us, so we became immediately friends. We spent an year almost every day togheter. Then she became mother of a wonderful child and we have no more time to spend togheter as before but our bond will stay very strong forever.

When I listened to the instrumental song "Your Trap" I said to Andy: "Are you crazy?" LOL!! But the song was very funny so I tried to put on a melody and it is came out with a voice a little bit sensual so then, I thought to an appropriated lyric. I thought to all those sly women who catch less sly men in their trap! :D

"The spark that lighted on my inspiration was the movie "Ex-Machina". The first track of the album is about it and the main theme turns around the actual society."

RtM: Your first album, "Transposed Emotions" already had this mixture of elements of Metal, Progressive, Electronic and Pop, for example, but I believe in "Machination" you go to another level, with even more personality already shown at the debut, and one of the main differences I felt is that the songs are more melodic and catchy, with even more striking lines, and the most varied arrangements. I would like you to comment on that and the differences you see between these two works.

Angela: Basically the first album included all my old songs I wrote ten years ago, but I never found a valid band to work on them (less "I don't wanna be", "My Doors" and "The Sin" that were new songs). So ten years ago, I was a different person with a different inspiration and skills. The world was a little bit different as well. The making of "Machination" instead was really exciting for me, because after many years I could express myself with my actual skills and inspiration. Today I'm most mature than ten years ago and in a song, the melody, the lyrics and the versatility of the voice do a great difference.

RtM: This variety and creativity that we find in "Machination" turns it in a very special album, with each song having different elements, bringing dynamism, resulting in a work that is a pleasure to listen from start to finish. I would like you to tell us about the album's songwriting process, how works the creative process within the band.

Angela: I think that what you listen on Machination is the result of different influences we have, as I already told you. We listen different kind of music and we love to push all together, sometimes when we listen a demo we've just done, we say "Oh my God! Is it not too crazy?", generally Andy guides this game...but on the basis we love melodic metal sound, rock melodies...so our music probably will always have this characterization.

RtM: I read an interview with you in which you have said: "Is not important how many notes it's possible to sing, but in how many ways you can do the same note." It's a very cool statement, because the first time I heard the Secret Rule, called me a lot of attention the way that you sing, with much feeling, interpreting each song, passing the mood and feeling of each. So, tell us a little more about how you started in music, and how you've been honing your style?

Angela: When I started to study singing about 15 years ago, I was a powerful voice but I was not able to control this strength and to put in my voice my feelings. I'm always been very shy, but also a lot angry! But when I started to study with my actual Vocal Coach Francesca Tenuta, she was able to bring out from me all my feelings, my passion and she showed me how is possible to sing the same note in different ways relative to the feeling you want to give to the listeners. So we experimented a lot on this way and you can listen to the result on "Machination".

RtM: And what musicians or singers you point as influences?

Angela: I love a lot of voices from different genres. I can give you these names: Anneke Van Giersbergen, Anouk, the Anathema's voices (Vincent, Danny and Lee), Alanis Morisettes, Dolores O'Riordan, Gwen Stefani, Sharon Den Adel and others. So maybe I might've taken some trait from them but anyway, I always tried to keep my identity.

RtM: And how did the Metal and Heavy Rock came into your life?

Angela: When around my twenties I went to live alone in Rome and I met a guy that invited me to go to a Metal concert. They were the Stratovarius, and I fell in love with Metal Music!

RtM: While we're talking about how you started your career in music, tell us a little about how the Secret Rule emerged.

Angela: Michele and Andy have known each other since 1987 and they used to play together in a band called Martiria. They had the idea with the first drummer (you never known), to found a new band with a fresh and modern sound. I met Andy about twelve years ago during a temporary project where I had the chance to appreciate his talent and his way of playing. Sometimes during the years Andy called me to ask if I was free to join a project together, but I was loosing my time (unfortunately) with other musicians. But I knew that sooner or later we would have done something together and in fact, at the end of 2013 he called me for speaking about a new project. He sent me the instrumental songs of "I Don't Wanna Be" and "My Doors" and I went to rehearsal with my melodies of these two songs. It was immediately love! In that occasion I met Michele for the first time :)

RtM: Speaking about feeling, I see a lot of bands now worry too much about technique, music with instrumental intricate, expensive productions, but can not make a song that touch the listener, or bring memorable melodies or great choruses. How do you see the music scene today, what elements do you think important to stand out in this scenario?

Angela: Wow! It's an hard question. I think that many bands write music with too many idols in their mind. This is good when you have to improve the own technic, such as is useful the study of the composition and of arrangements of great songs (or the vocal technique, in my case, of great singers), but then we have to reap all our deeper feelings to express ourself. It is not easy. I think it is the bigger problem for many musicians. Another important point is the music market and the way in which the majors work. Now, I could say a very banal matter, but today is more easy to push a band that's a copy of another more famous, instead to push a new sound. So, many musicians could think that playing in the same way of other bigger band is an easier way to reach the top. Maybe you understand that I'm not very happy of this scenario  :) But I'm always very careful to new bands or new things.

RtM: And the expectations for the new album, and with this new line-up, will bring to Secret Rule in the future?

Angela: We're putting all ourself in this project and we're working very hard on it all the time. But unfortunately it not depends just from us. There are labels, promoters, venues, booking agencies, promotion agencies etc.. many factors determine the success. Often many bands lose a lot of time, long years (and money) in the wrong hands so we have to be careful. In each case, we'll continue to play our music forever, it's our drug :)
