Após quatro décadas dedicadas ao rock, Rachel Bolan dispensa apresentações. Como baixista e fundador do Skid Row, ajudou a escrever capítulos importantes do hard rock norte-americano, mas nem todas as suas ideias encontraram espaço dentro da sonoridade da banda. "Garden State" é o apelido oficial de Nova Jersey, estado onde Bolan nasceu e para o qual decidiu retornar ao lado da esposa após cerca de 25 anos vivendo longe. O disco carrega esse sentimento de reencontro com o lugar de onde veio. Já as gárgulas presentes no título fazem referência a uma antiga fascinação do músico por essas figuras, frequentemente associadas à proteção e ao misticismo. Juntos, esses elementos ajudam a construir um álbum profundamente conectado às origens de Bolan.
Produzido por Nick Raskulinecz em parceria com o próprio Bolan, o trabalho encontra equilíbrio entre o hard rock que marcou sua carreira e uma forte inclinação para o punk rock. Essa combinação aparece durante todo o álbum, adicionando velocidade, atitude e uma energia quase juvenil às canções. Já "Jet Black Universe" ganha força extra com a participação de Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme), cuja guitarra acrescenta técnica, personalidade e um brilho especial à faixa.
Por outro lado, "Big Stick" representa o lado mais irreverente e agressivo do álbum. Com a participação de Corey Taylor (Slipknot), a música mergulha de cabeça na estética punk, carregada de atitude, sujeira e energia. É uma das faixas que melhor traduzem o espírito livre que move todo o projeto.
A escolha de regravar "Rock and Roll Star", do Oasis, também faz sentido dentro dessa proposta. Em vez de reproduzir fielmente o clássico britânico, Bolan o conduz para seu próprio território, fazendo com que a canção se encaixe naturalmente no contexto do álbum.
Quando "Walk Away" encerra a experiência, fica a sensação de que Gargoyle of the Garden State cumpriu exatamente aquilo que se propôs a fazer. Não há pretensão de reinventar o rock nem de apresentar algo revolucionário. O objetivo aqui é outro: celebrar a liberdade criativa, as amizades construídas ao longo da estrada e a paixão pela música.

Rachel Bolan Returns to His Roots on Gargoyle of the Garden State
After four decades devoted to rock music, Rachel Bolan hardly needs an introduction. As the bassist and founding member of Skid Row, he helped write some of the most memorable chapters in American hard rock. Yet not every idea he developed over the years fit within the band's musical identity. Riffs, melodies, and songs were often left waiting for the right moment to come to life. That moment has finally arrived with Gargoyle of the Garden State, his solo debut.
Free from the natural constraints of an established band, Bolan uses this project to explore his own creative path and embrace influences that have always been part of his musical DNA. There's something inherently punk about the entire concept: making music without worrying about formulas, trends, or outside expectations. The result is an album that feels spontaneous, authentic, and, above all, fun.
The album's title also reveals much about its personal nature.
