As cartas ganham vida
The Fool
The Magician: Into Fire
Death: Right Before We Die
O título Right Before We Die acrescenta uma camada dramática a essa ideia.
Tower: Lean into Fear
The Devil: Sin, Sin, Sin
The Chariot: Alla Ricerca dell'Americ
The Hanged Man: Petrichor
The World
Aqui temos apenas violão a voz da Kristen e back vocals no refrão.
***ENGLISH VERSION***
There are bands we discover and listen to every now and then, and then there are those that show up at just the right time and suddenly never leave our playlists. Temperance was one of those discoveries for me. Ever since I found the band, I haven't been able to stop listening, especially to their latest singles, which have definitely become some of my favorite releases of the year. Honestly, that doesn't happen very often, so long before I received this album, I was already looking forward to hearing the full record and sharing my thoughts with you. And finally, that day has arrived!
But before this starts sounding like fan-girling, let's get down to business.
A Journey Through the Tarot Cards
For those who aren't familiar with them yet, Temperance is an Italian melodic and symphonic metal band that combines heaviness, power metal elements, memorable melodies, and different vocal approaches. One of the most interesting aspects of their musical identity is the way they explore the possibilities of their vocalists, moving between melodic lines, harmonies, and moments of greater intensity.
On Arcani, the band dives into the world of Tarot, building its thematic foundation around the cards and their meanings. Since each card has its own symbolism and the cards don't necessarily tell a linear story, the album doesn't have to be understood as a traditional concept record. However, as I explored the subject, I came across an interesting interpretation: the Major Arcana can represent the Fool's Journey. The Fool is one of the most symbolic figures in Tarot and appears as the first card in many decks.
From this perspective, each card can represent a stage in a journey of discovery, conflict, and transformation. Temperance explores this mystical universe and turns its different atmospheres into distinct musical experiences. Rather than using Tarot merely as an aesthetic element, the concept creates room to explore different emotions and possibilities throughout the album.
This choice also raises an interesting question: if each card represents a moment in this journey, how does the band translate these different energies into music? This is where Arcani begins to reveal its personality.
Between Heaviness, Melody, and Spectacle
The lineup features American vocalist Kristin Starkey, Michele Guaitoli on vocals and piano, band founder Marco Pastorino on guitar and vocals, Luca Negro on bass and vocals, and Marco Sacchetto on drums. It's a combination that allows for rich vocal arrangements and plenty of creative possibilities, two essential elements of Temperance's sound.
On an album with such a strong thematic concept, production plays a particularly important role. The challenge is to balance the weight of the guitars, the power of the drums, the symphonic elements, and the different voices without compromising the clarity of the melodies. The music calls for grandeur, but it also needs personality, and the relationship between spectacle and composition is where the results become particularly interesting.
Compared to their previous release, Hermitage – Daruma's Eyes Pt. 2, Arcani is also worth examining for the way it develops its identity and brings its songs together under a shared thematic vision. It's not just about delivering good individual tracks, but about making them contribute to an album that works as a complete experience.
Bringing the Cards to Life
The Fool
The opening track is as grand as you might expect from a symphonic power metal album. Interestingly, that works in its favor. Rather than unleashing all its aggression from the very beginning, the song gradually builds, taking on a triumphant feel, almost as if it's following the Fool's first steps on his journey.
As the track progresses, this build-up gains momentum until it reaches a grand chorus, the kind that gets stuck in your head and makes you want to sing along. Here, we find one of Temperance's most distinctive strengths: the ability to create accessible melodies without sacrificing the energy and drama that are such an important part of the genre.
It's an opening track that does its job well and invites the listener to embark on the journey.
The Magician: Into Fire
If The Fool represents the beginning of a journey, The Magician: Into Fire arrives with an energy that perfectly matches the Magician and its associations with fire, action, and transformation.
The song's strength comes through both the vocal performances and the instrumental arrangement. It conveys movement and intensity, reinforcing the impression that the album's concept isn't simply there to provide titles for the songs, but also helps shape their musical identity.
This combination of energy, memorable melodies, and engaging choruses is something Temperance seems to handle particularly well. As the journey unfolds, it's interesting to see how the band explores different possibilities without abandoning the elements that make its sound so recognizable.
Death: Right Before We Die
This is one of my favorite tracks on the album. And when a song stands out like this on a record with a strong thematic concept, it naturally makes you even more curious about how it connects to the rest of the work.
The Death card carries symbolism that goes far beyond endings. It's also associated with transformation, upheaval, and the possibility of a new beginning. The title Right Before We Die adds another dramatic layer to that idea.
What really makes this track shine for me, though, is the way the three voices blend together. The interplay between the vocalists and the harmonies gives the song even more strength, bringing out each singer's individual qualities without losing the overall cohesion. It's one of those moments when the band's vocal richness becomes more than just a defining characteristic of its sound: it becomes one of the composition's greatest highlights.
Tower: Lean into Fear
Kristin Starkey's voice is an absolute highlight here. The song begins aggressively and powerfully, establishing an intense atmosphere that fits its theme of facing our fears and finding strength amid chaos.
The Tower card is associated with upheaval, collapsing structures, and changes that may be painful but are sometimes necessary to make room for something new. This idea of rebuilding connects beautifully with the track's energy.
The instrumentation deserves attention as well. Right from the beginning, there's a passage that reminded me of the atmosphere of a live festival, with a touch of hard rock that adds a special charm to the composition. It's a detail that sets the song apart and shows how Temperance can explore other influences without losing its identity.
For all these reasons, Tower: Lean into Fear has become one of the album's most interesting tracks for me.
The Devil: Sin, Sin, Sin
If there's one thing Temperance does particularly well, it's writing choruses made to be sung out loud. The Devil: Sin, Sin, Sin is a great example. The track has a melodic structure that's easy to pick up, inviting listeners to sing along. It's the kind of song that could work especially well live, with the crowd turning into one big choir.
But its appeal goes beyond having a catchy chorus. This track also gives us the chance to appreciate Kristin Starkey's more operatic vocal lines and her versatility, which adds even more drama to the composition.
Considering the Devil card's themes of temptation, desire, and inner conflict, this dramatic intensity feels perfectly at home here. The result is a track that combines melodic appeal and theatricality without losing its heaviness.
Temperance: Forgiveness
I want to highlight this track precisely because it shares its title with the band. And while we're at it, here's an interesting detail: the name Temperance doesn't come directly from the meaning of the Tarot card of the same name, but rather from the literal and philosophical meaning of the word, which is associated with moderation, balance, and the blending of different elements.
It's interesting to think that this idea of balance also connects with the band's musical identity, which combines heaviness, melody, symphonic elements, and different vocal approaches.
Musically, the track delivers another memorable chorus, with repeated phrases that make it easy for the listener to connect with the song right away. The combination of engaging melodies, a cinematic atmosphere, and heaviness sums up many of the elements that make Temperance's sound so distinctive.
More than simply being a song named after the band, Temperance: Forgiveness feels like a strong representation of its musical identity.
The Chariot: Alla Ricerca dell'America
Taking an approach closer to a ballad, The Chariot: Alla Ricerca dell'America explores different musical nuances and brings a theatrical quality to the composition. The passages sung in Italian add an extra layer of emotion and drama which, for me, are among the track's greatest charms.
The choice of language also gives the performance something special, connecting the song to the band's Italian roots and creating an atmosphere that feels different from other moments on the album.
Rather than relying on the grandeur typically associated with power metal, this track focuses more on building an emotional experience. And that change in approach works beautifully, revealing another side of Temperance.
The Hanged Man: Petrichor
This is one of the most beautiful tracks on the album. It begins dramatically, with acoustic guitar lines creating an intimate atmosphere, but soon gains weight and develops into something melodic, triumphant, and cinematic.
The chorus is one of the highlights, especially because of the way the voices blend harmoniously. Once again, Kristin Starkey demonstrates her versatility, and her operatic passages add brightness and drama to the track without compromising its balance.
At almost seven minutes long, Petrichor could easily become tiring if it didn't know how to balance its different sections. However, the song manages to hold the listener's attention throughout, shifting between delicacy, heaviness, and grandeur in an engaging way.
It's a track that shows how Temperance can explore different atmospheres within a single composition without losing its cohesion.
The World
The album closes with a track that contrasts directly with the grandeur of Petrichor. At less than three minutes long, The World works as a moment of calm after the entire journey through the Major Arcana.
Here, the arrangement is stripped down to acoustic guitar, Kristin's vocals, and backing vocals in the chorus. This choice creates a delicate, intimate atmosphere, offering the listener a moment to breathe after all the shifts in intensity throughout the album.
I think this decision works really well as a closing statement. Instead of ending with yet another grand, epic track, Temperance opts for simplicity and brings the journey to a more contemplative close, leaving the listener with a sense of resolution.
A Journey Worth Revisiting
Arcani starts with a thematic concept that gives Temperance the opportunity to explore different atmospheres within its melodic and symphonic identity. Between memorable choruses, instrumental energy, and vocal performances worth highlighting, the album offers plenty of reasons to understand why the band caught my attention so quickly.
Although my expectations for this release were already high, listening to the full album allowed me to look beyond the singles and discover other layers of the work. The tracks have their own characteristics, explore different levels of intensity, and find ways to stand out without abandoning the identity that ties the album together.
And if there's one thing I can say at this point, it's that Temperance has made me want to return to the album, revisit the tracks, and discover new details with every listen. For a band that only recently found its way onto my playlist and quickly earned its place there, that already means a lot.
