Entrevista: Affront - Thrash Metal em Alerta Contra o Colapso Mundial

Formado em 2016 pelo baixista e vocalista M. Mictian, o Affront é um power trio de Thrash/Death Metal que traz agressividade e riffs fortes, mas também apresenta linhas melodiosas na guitarra. Tem também como característica marcante, as letras que buscam fazer refletir, principalmente quanto ao pacote de mazelas, ganância, consumismo e outros males da humanidade.

A banda já está com seu segundo full-lenght lançado, "World in Collapse", o qual vem recebendo muitos elogios da imprensa especializada. Mesmo com alguns planos tendo de ser adiados, o Affront segue divulgando o trabalho, que também está disponível nas plataformas de streaming, e inclusive recentemente lançou novo vídeo, que vem tendo excelente repercussão.

Conversamos com M. Mictian para falar um pouco mais a respeito de "World in Collapse", o qual traz um título e muitas músicas bem adequadas ao momento atual no mundo, além de vários outros assuntos! Confira agora:

RtM: O título mundo em colapso se mostrou bem adequado ao momento que a humanidade vinha passando, e agora podemos dizer que foi quase profético para este momento atual. Comente um pouco sobre o título e a mensagem que você quis transmitir.

M.Mictian: Quando comecei a escrever esse disco eu tinha observado que pelo mundo muitos países (Austria, Polônia, Itália, Hungria, Brasil...etc) tinham candidatos políticos de Extrema Direita e que essa praga crescia no mundo inteiro, então a única coisa que veio a minha cabeça foi um colapso global, e muitos deles acabaram eleitos, foi algo que se concretizou. Claro que o mundo sempre teve enormes problemas, e políticos gananciosos como de praxe, mas essa crescente me chamou a atenção naquele momento e me assustou muito confesso, e o título surgiu assim nesse medo permeado por dúvidas quanto ao futuro do mundo, e a concepção da capa também seguiu essa ideia.

RtM: Títulos e letras em português são utilizados já costumeiramente pela banda, além de alguns elementos que aparecem nas músicas. Gostaria que você comentasse a respeito, e acredito que isso também contribua para a identidade da banda, e possivelmente alguém de outro país ouvir, pode fazer a conexão de onde a banda vem.

M.Mictian: Olha eu tenho uma identificação muito forte, com minhas raízes e tradições do nosso país, e muitas das vezes gosto sim de pôr isso em práticas nas músicas que componho, eu gosto disso e se isso se transformar em um ponto de identificação da banda eu fico feliz, mas eu deixo acontecer bem naturalmente é assim que componho minhas músicas.

RtM: Em comparação ao Debut, “World In Collapse” apresenta uma evolução natural, mas mais voltada ao Thrash Metal em si deixando em segundo plano as raízes do Death Metal. Isto foi proposital?

M.Mictian: Desde o começo a ideia pro Affront era que seria uma banda de Thrash Metal, mas fomos compondo e as coisas foram saindo uma miscelânea de Thrash/Death Metal, talvez por estar a anos em uma outra banda a qual fazíamos Black/Death Metal isso tenha ainda influenciado nas composições do primeiro álbum, mas já no segundo as ideias foram indo mais na direção a qual eu queria, e de forma fácil e tranquila sem forçar nada, não procurei nenhuma fórmula apenas deixei fluir.

RtM: Chamou-nos atenção o acréscimo de mais melodias, principalmente no trabalho das guitarras, mas mantendo a agressividade característica do Thrash. Foi um equilíbrio que vocês buscavam, trazendo um diferencial, ou algo que foi fluindo naturalmente?

M.Mictian: R.Rassan o nosso ex-guitarrista, e que gravou o álbum, é um excelente músico e um grande amigo, eu fui criando os riffs e em cima ele foi criando melodias e frases de guitarras, eu fui deixando e foi bem natural, e como a ideia era fazer um Thrash Metal assim mesmo, com melodias, mas com força nos riffs. Nós deixamos fluir e aconteceu.

RtM: Gostaria que você comentasse um pouco mais a respeito da "Theres's no Tomorrow", que inclusive foi escolhida para o novo vídeo.

M.Mictian: Parece que a humanidade caminha para isso mesmo, e desta forma não haverá amanhã, é a mensagem que a música passa, um consumismo desenfreado, destruição do meio ambiente e destruição do próprio ser humano, violência gratuita, adoração de mitos... é um pacote de mazelas, desgraças e horror a qual o ser humano está impondo ao mundo e a sua própria existência, caminhando a passos largos para sua destruição.

RtM: "Your Lies, Your Fall" também é um tema forte e um destaque do álbum, nos fale um pouco mais sobre ela, título também muito atual.

M.Mictian: Meu filho mais velho disse que isso seria uma indireta para o fascista presidente do Brasil, talvez seja, mas também é uma “direta” ao ser humano falho, ganancioso, egoísta, invejoso, autoritário, às pessoas que mentem e fazem de tudo para vencer e não importam as consequências desses atos, e isso se enquadra em uma quantidade enorme de pessoas que conheço e convivi, mas que sempre, mais a frente a queda é inevitável, porque tudo que se consegue dessa forma as bases são feitas em areia e irão ruir.

RtM: Ainda sobre “World In Collapse”, como se deu o processo criativo do mesmo? Como está sendo o retorno do público referente ao trabalho?

M.Mictian: Basicamente eu começo a compor sozinho, músicas, letras e título do álbum, depois vou desenvolvendo cada tema, quando tenho um esqueleto e uma base geral para o álbum. Então entra o guitarrista para criar melodias e frases junto comigo, e assim terminando as músicas, as letras eu faço sempre sozinho para manter uma integridade e basicamente abordar assuntos que versam entre si, eu gosto de manter as músicas minimamente como uma tema só, conversando entre si.

RtM: Além do lançamento físico dos trabalhos que também foram lançados fora do país por gravadoras europeias, temos a intensificação do Streaming. Como é para vocês trabalharem com está realidade atualmente?

M.Mictian: Temos que nos adaptar ao que a realidade nos impõe, hoje se vende pouco material físico, isso é sabido por todos, então a gravadora propôs trabalhar muito em cima das plataformas digitais e não tem como fugir disso, então embarcamos juntos com eles para que o álbum, além de físico, pudesse também estar no streaming com bastante divulgação, essa é a realidade.

RtM: Em uma época de caos pandêmico e sem previsão de retorno à normalidade ou até mesmo de uma cura, como está sendo a rotina da banda e dos músicos atualmente?

M.Mictian: Eu me mantenho em isolamento, tenho um filho pequeno e não quero que nenhum um mal chegue a ele, infelizmente cancelamos algumas datas pelo Brasil, shows de divulgação do álbum, também atrapalhou e atrasou o lançamento do videoclipe, os ensaios estão parados, e mantemos contato via internet, a única maneira que temos no momento, vamos esperar todo esse caos passar e voltar com tudo e tentar recuperar o tempo perdido.

RtM: Apesar de vermos algumas opiniões contrárias, você acredita ser importante o posicionamento dos músicos quanto a situações políticas e sociais?

M.Mictian: Olha eu sou democrático, mas eu me posiciono sempre, não tenho medo não tenho vergonha, quem quiser que o faça também. Eu nasci numa favela, num barraco de madeira em cima de valão e não devo nada a ninguém, eu sempre vou me posicionar, se eu ver injustiças, racismo, preconceito e discurso de ódio, pode ter certeza que sempre irei contra. Agora tem pessoas que se sentem acuadas e outras que apoiam tais atitudes dos atuais governantes, eu acho errado não se posicionar contra o autoritarismo eu não irei abaixar a cabeça, haja o que houver.

RtM: Referente as lives que estão sendo feitas por diversos artistas e bandas, qual a sua opinião sobre está nova prática?

M.Mictian: Eu acho super válido tem que fazer sim, entretenimento bom é sempre bem vindo, as pessoas estão presas em casa (uma boa maioria que tem bom senso) e essas lives ajudam um pouco a tirar o tédio, eu acho super legal e válido sim.

Affront: A Great First Album, with Brutality, Technique and Personality

Formed in the beginning of 2016 by the experienced musicians Marcelo Mictian (UNEARTHLY) in bass and vocals and R. Rassan, guitar, (former member of bands like Imago Mortis and Ainur), and the revelation Jedy Najay in the sticks, AFFRONT spared no efforts and treated to record their first full-lenght, which was preceded by videos for the songs "Under Siege" and "Scum of the World", always looking to give samples of what was to come, with a sound proposal that aims to unite Thrash And Death Metal in an original and very own way.  (Versão em Português)

In December of 2016 the group present their debut, "Angry Voices", containing 12 tracks, where we can hear a Thrash/Death that brings a lot of the roots of the styles, but with a contemporary sound and bringing subtleties and details that gives someting personal. The lyric part, which gives its message, in a certain direct way, but there is a larger concept that can be understood in a broader way, talking about all the greed of politics and religious institutions, and little of brazilian history. M. Mictian discusses each song in the release, which you can read at the end of the review.

The band has been walking fast, and the experience and competence of the musicians, the dedication and work are the main responsible, resulting in a first album with great solidity and personality, which is the purpose of AFFRONT, and for sure this musical proposal will still evolve.

 "Scum of the World" starts the album like an avalanch, already known in the lyric video, opens the record, vociferating about the sordid ways that politicians and churches seek profits, and the proposal of the band already becomes clear to the listener, in the mix between riffs and alternation of typical Thrash tempos, with the speed and aggressiveness of Death Metal, harsh vocals and aggressive and technical instrumental, emphasizing the clarity of the instruments, provided by the high-level sound production. "Angry Voices" is very aggressive, and we can already see the excellent work of the drummer Jedy Najay, who brings weight, aggressiveness, speed and technique.

The mix between Death and Thrash is perfect on tracks such as "Under Siege", which was the first clip, and here it appears in two versions, being the last track of the album too, bringing Marcelo Pompeu, from KORZUS, on vocals. This track features typical contemporary Thrash riffs (what a great riff on the beginning), alternating darker and more serious passages, as well as "Carved in Stone", a slow-tempo song, with palm-mute riffs, also typical of Death, as well as a melodious  passage on guitars.

In addition to this mixture of Thrash and Death, some other elements appear, more evident, as these acoustic tracks and with more melody, that as in "Carved in Stone", also appear in "Conflicts", very agressive, with riffs full of harmonics, and an acoustic part, which gives a very interesting break; and in the instrumental "Terra Sem Males (Guarany War)" (Earth Without Evils), M. Mictian recorded indigenous instruments; The track sung in Portuguese "Mestre do Barro" (Master of Clay), honors the artist from Pernambuco, Master Vitalino (1909-1963), a popular artist sculptor of clay art, whose work is even exhibited in museums in Europe. This track stands out, not only for the theme and the intro with pandeiro, but for the excellent guitars, and its captivating rhythm.

A great debut and a band to continue paying close attention. Work that brings songs with weight and aggressiveness, mixing fast moments with other more worked, some surprises and intelligent alternation of nuances of Thrash and Death, resulting in a solid composition album, dynamic and exciting.

 More About the Tracks, by the words of M.Mictian (bass and vocals)

1-"Scum Of The World" (song from the band's first lyric video) The song is a bit about the dirty side of politics, church, and the way they get dirty money at any price.

2-"Angry Voices" - strong and aggressive talks about the hatred and anger of personalities that plague the world as politicians, dictators and their beliefs.

3-"Affront" -  "Old Decrepts", as the great Ratos de Porão (Basement Rats, brazilian traditional Thrash/Hardcore band) would say, this synthesis of this song is to speak of the "lords" who feed on misery, with greed, passing over all.

 4-"Conflicts" - Here we talk about the demonstrations against corrupt governments throughout the world the indignation of the people with these rats of power.

5-"Terra Sem Males" - Instrumental (bass and indigenous instruments all recorded by M.Mictian) a tribute to the Guarani War (... is the name given to the violent conflicts involving the Guarani Indians and the Spanish and Portuguese troops in the south Of Brazil after the signing of the Treaty of Madrid on January 13, 1750. The Guarani Indians of the region of the Seven Peoples of the Missions refuse to leave their lands in the territory of Rio Grande do Sul and to transfer to the other side Of the Uruguay River, as agreed in the boundary agreement between Portugal and Spain. As a result of this treaty, the Portuguese Empire also exercised sovereignty over the territories of Jesuit Missions located east of the Uruguay River. It occurs that the Portuguese Empire allowed the enslavement of the natives, who in that region were the Guarani, whereas in the Spanish Empire all Indians were automatically subjects of the King of Spain and therefore could not be enslaved)

6-"Mestre Vitalino" (1909-1963) was a popular Brazilian artist, considered one of the greatest artists in the history of Brazilian clay art. Vitalino Pereira dos Santos (1909-1963), known as Mestre Vitalino, was born in the city of Caruaru, Pernambuco, on July 10, 1909. Son of a farmer and an artisan making clay pots to sell at the fair, from Six years of age already made his talent visible shaping small animals with leftover clay. His art is exhibited not only in large Brazilian museums, but also in the Museum of Popular Art in Vienna, Austria and the Louvre Museum in Paris. In Brazil, much of his work is in the Casa do Pontal and Chácara do Céu museums, in Rio de Janeiro, in the Museological Collection of the Federal University of Pernambuco, in Recife, and in Alto do Moura, in Caruaru, where the artist lived .
