Scherer/Batten: Pérola do Hard/Melodic Rock Contemporâneo

A história deste projeto reunindo o vocalista Marc Scherer e a guitarrista Jennifer Batten começa em 2010, quando iniciou a parceria de Scherer com Jim Peterik (Pride of Lions, Ides of March, sua primeira banda, a qual o single "Vehicle" foi o mais vendido da história da Warner Music, e claro, Survivor, com a qual foi nominado ao Grammy e indicado ao Oscar de melhor canção com "Eye of the Tiger", que foi tema do filme "Rocky III"). Peterik é um ícone da música, principalmente se falarmos do Hard Rock e Melodic Rock, criando pérolas do estilo, seja na década de 80 com o Survivor (quem não conhece "Eye of the Tiger"?, que foi tema do filme "Rocky III"), ou com seus projetos mais atuais, como o Pride of Lions. Em 2010, impressionado com a voz de Marc Scherer, inicia a compor para o que viria a ser o projeto Peterik/Scherer, a fim de mostrar a capacidade e talento de Marc. (English Version)

O álbum "Risk Everything" foi lançado em 2015 pela Frontiers Music, gravadora Italiana responsável hoje por uma gama enorme de lançamentos do estilo, incluíndo em seu cast novos nomes e nomes consagrados e cultuados da época de ouro do Hard e Melodic Rock.

Da parceria e amizade, e entre uma conversa e outra, surgiu a ideia deste novo projeto, onde seriam "resgatadas" algumas pérolas do baú de composições de Jim Peterik, canções que, na visão de Marc, mereceriam uma nova chance. Foram então escolhidas 8 canções, as quais ganharam nova vida e a interpretação de Marc.

E para tornar isso tudo ainda mais coeso e atual, afinal eram canções de diferentes épocas, e também com parcerias diferentes, Jim tem a ideia de trazer para o projeto a fantástica Jennifer Batten, guitarrista que trabalhou com nomes como Michael Jackson e Jeff Beck. Jennifer deu a liga final, trazendo bom gosto, feeling e doses de virtuosismo. O trio então escreve três novas canções para o álbum, sendo a primeira delas a que se tornaria faixa título do projeto: "Battlezone"

Lançado via Melodic Rock Records dia 22 de setembro, "Scherer/Batten's Battlezone" traz um impressionante track-list com 11 peças de arte do Hard Rock e Melodic Rock, com uma sonoridade pavimentada por aquele feeling dos anos 80, porém soando atual e coeso. São canções onde a musicalidade e bom gosto atingem em cheio nossos ouvidos, transitando por momentos ora mais Hard Rock, ora mais Melodic Rock, em diversos coloridos e sabores. Canções recheadas de grandes arranjos, belas melodias e inspiradas performances de Scherer e Batten, os quais são apoiados por um line-up de primeira linha, incluindo músicos de grupos como Chicago, Survivor, World Stage e outros.

O próprio Jim Peterik se encarregou da produção que está excelente, trazendo aquela qualidade que o estilo exige, e extraindo o melhor dos músicos, o que valorizou ainda mais as suas composições.

Aos primeiros acordes da faixa de abertura, "Crazy Love", um Hard Rock com groove, podemos sentir o feeling e virtuosismo de Jennifer, aliados a grande voz de Marc.Destaque também para o refrão e pegajosos backing vocals; "Rough Diamond" alterna belas e suaves melodias de teclado, com a pegada e virtuosismo de Jennifer; "What do You Really Think" tem um andamento vibrante, e traz como destaque o magnífico refrão e as grandes melodias de teclado. Marc mostra feeling e técnica, passeando por regiões mais suaves e mais altas, às vezes parecendo duelar com a onipresente guitarra de Batten, sempre escolhendo belos timbres e exibindo virtuosismo.

"The Sound of Your Voice" é daquelas que nasceram destinadas a ser um Hit, e apesar de ter tido uma atenção na época em que foi gravada pelo 38 Special (no álbum "Bone Against Steel" de 1991), merecia nova chance, e ganhou uma versão mais vibrante e potente. Possui aquele feeling dos 80's, mas soa perfeitamente atual. A voz de Marc e as guitarras de Jennifer, assim como os arranjos de teclado, deram mais vida à canção; "Battlezone", a faixa título, é um Hard potente, virtuoso e com grandes vocais e impressionantes melodias e refrãos! Uma das 3 canções novas compostas pelo trio, e que batizou o álbum. Título forte, canção idem!

"Cuts Deep" é um belo Melodic Rock. Balada de bom gosto, naquele estilo radiofônico dos anos 80, trazendo um dos mais marcantes refrãos do álbum, além de belos arranjos vocais e instrumental inspirado e carregado de feeling; "The Harder I Try" também é outro Melodic Rock de extremo bom gosto. Belas melodias de teclado e saxofone (este a cargo da ganhadora do Grammy Mindi Abair) trazem um ar melancólico, com Marc sabendo colocar a emoção correta; "Dreaming With My Eyes Wide Open", como o título até sugere, traz deliciosas melodias e cativante refrão, os quais nos fazem "sonhar com os olhos meio abertos".

"Space and Time" inicia com andamento moderado e suave, com Jennifer extraindo belos timbres. Suave e sofisticada, a canção cresce no refrão, que é apoiado por belos arranjos de teclado. Aquele sabor dos anos 80 também se faz presente; "Tender Fire", mais uma das novas canções compostas exclusivamente para o projeto, traz uma linha cativante de teclado, destacando o refrão quase sinfônico. As intervenções de Jennifer são certeiras e provocantes, e Marc esbanja classe e groove; "All Roads" encerra este belíssimo álbum de forma magistral. Power-Ballad com cativantes linhas vocais e melodias. O refrão traz algo de Soul Music, e Marc parece ter colocado doses extras de emoção em seus vocais.

Não é exagero afirmar que Marc Scherer, Jennifer Batten, e claro Jim Peterik e mais o incrível time de músicos envolvidos no projeto, cometeram uma "masterpiece" do estilo. Bom gosto, Feeling e atuações exuberantes. São onze faixas onde cada uma das músicas soa como uma pequena peça de arte, tal o cuidado com os detalhes, valorizando a musicalidade e inspiração dos músicos. Diversos “sabores”, tendo base o Melodic Rock dos anos 80, leia-se aí grandes melodias, excelentes teclados e guitarras, e um capricho enorme nos arranjos vocais.

Scherer/Batten' Battlezone: Contemporaneous Melodic Rock Pearl!

We can say that the story of this project with the vocalist Marc Scherer and guitarist Jennifer Batten begins in 2010, when started Scherer's partnership with Jim Peterik (Ides of March, that song "Vehicle" was the fastest selling single in Warner's history, and sure, Survivor, which he was nominated for a Grammy for the song "Eye of the Tiger). Peterik is an icon, especially if we talk about Hard Rock and Melodic Rock, creating pearls of the style, either in the 80's with Survivor (who does not know "Eye of the Tiger"?) Or with his most current projects, such as Pride of Lions. In 2010, impressed by the voice of Marc Scherer, he began composing for what would become the Peterik/Scherer project, in order to showcase Marc's talent and ability. (versão em português)

The album "Risk Everything" was released in 2015 by Frontiers Music, the Italian label responsible today for a huge range of releases of the style, including in its cast new names and well-known and celebrated names from the golden era of Hard, Classic and Melodic Rock.

From the partnership and friendship, and between a conversation and another, the idea of this new project arose, where some pearls from the Peterik's vault, songs that, in Marc's view, would merit a new chance. They were chosen 8 songs, which gained new life with the interpretation of Marc.

And to make it all even more cohesive, after all were songs from different eras, and also with different partnerships, Jim has the idea to bring to the project the fantastic Jennifer Batten, guitarist who worked with names like Michael Jackson and Jeff Beck. Jennifer gave the final ingredient, bringing good taste, feeling and doses of virtuosity. The trio then writes three new songs for the album, the first of which would become title track of the project: "Battlezone".

Released via Melodic Rock Records on September 22, "Scherer/Batten's Battlezone" features an impressive track-list featuring 11 pieces of Hard Rock and Melodic Rock art, with a sonority paved by that 80's feel, but sounding current and cohesive .

Songs where the musicality and good taste reach our ears full, passing for moments more Hard Rock, or more AOR/Melodic Rock, in diverse colors and flavors. Songs filled with great arrangements, beautiful melodies and inspired performances by Scherer and Batten, all of which are backed by a top-notch line-up, including musicians from groups like Chicago, Survivor, World Stage and others.

Jim Peterik himself was in charge of the production that is excellent, bringing the quality that the style requires, and drawing the best of the musicians, which further enhanced their compositions.

At the first chords of the opening track, "Crazy Love", we have a energic Hard Rock with groove. Highlighting the feeling and virtuosity of Jennifer, allied to the great voice of Marc, and also for the chorus and sticky backing vocals; "Rough Diamond" alternates beautiful and soft keyboard melodies, with Jennifer's footprint and virtuosity.

"What Do You Really Think" has a vibrant tempo, and brings out the magnificent chorus and the great keyboard melodies. Marc shows feeling and technique, walking through softer and higher regions, sometimes seeming to duel with the ubiquitous guitar of Batten, always choosing beautiful timbres and displaying virtuosity.

"The Sound of Your Voice" is one of those born destined to be a Hit, and despite having paid attention at the time it was recorded by 38 Special (on 1991's "Bone Against Steel" album), it deserved a new chance, and won a more vibrant and powerful version. It has that 80's feel, but it sounds perfectly current. Marc's voice and Jennifer's guitars, as well as the keyboard arrangements, made the song more alive; "Battlezone", the title track, is a powerful, virtuous Hard and with great vocals and impressive melodies and choruses! One of 3 new songs composed by the trio, and that baptized the album. Strong title, idem song!

"Cuts Deep" is a beautiful Melodic Rock. Tasteful ballad, in that radio style of the 80's, bringing one of the most remarkable refrains of the album, as well as beautiful vocal arrangements and instrumental inspired and loaded with feeling; "The Harder I Try" is also another Melodic Rock of extreme good taste. Beautiful melodies of keyboard and saxophone (this one in charge of the winner of the Grammy, Mindi Abair) bring a melancholic air, with Marc knowing to put the correct emotion; "Dreaming With My Eyes Wide Open", as the title even suggests, brings delightful melodies and captivating chorus, which make us "dream with eyes wide open" for sure!

"Space and Time" begins with a moderate and smooth tempo, with Jennifer extracting beautiful timbres. Soft and sophisticated, the song grows in the chorus, which is backed up by beautiful keyboard arrangements. That flavor of the 80s is also present; "Tender Fire" plus one of the new songs composed exclusively for the project, brings a captivating line of keyboard, highlighting the quasi-symphonic chorus. Jennifer's interventions are accurate and provocative, and Marc lavishes class and groove; "All Roads" ends this beautiful album masterfully. Power-Ballad with captivating vocal lines and melodies. The chorus brings something of Soul Music, and Marc seems to have put extra doses of emotion into his vocals.

It is no exaggeration to say that Marc Scherer, Jennifer Batten, and of course Jim Peterik and the incredible team of musicians involved in the project, committed a masterpiece of the style. Good taste, Feeling and lush performances. There are eleven tracks where each one of the songs sounds like a small piece of art, such as the care of the details, valuing the musicality and inspiration of the musicians. Several "flavors", based on the Melodic Rock of the 80's, and it means great melodies, excellent keyboards and guitars, and a huge whim in the vocal arrangements.
