Entrevista - Jim Peterik: "Eu faço isso como uma necessidade de comunicar minha música para tantas pessoas quanto eu puder"

Um exímio criador de hits e grandes canções, um músico que experimentou o sucesso comercial, vendendo milhões de álbuns, colocando músicas no topo dos charts já aos 19 anos, com o Ides of March nos anos 70, e mais tarde, nos anos 80, premiado com um Grammy  e indicado a um Oscar de melhor canção. Inspirou milhões de pessoas com canções como "Eye of the Tiger", que é praticamente um patrimônio da humanidade.  (English Version)

Escreveu também muitas canções para artistas e grupos como Sammy Hagar, Van Zant, Beach Boys, 38 Special, Cheap Trick e Reo Speedwagon. Segue produzindo e inspirando pessoas em seus trabalhos com o The Songs, Ides of March,  Pride of Lions, Peterik/Scherer, e mais recentemente com Scherer/Batten, projeto o qual traz canções suas e também sua produção.

Tivemos a oportunidade de conversar com esta verdadeira lenda da música, que nos falou um pouco mais desse novo projeto, e claro, algumas histórias de sua carreira. Confira:

RtM: Olá Jim, obrigado por arrumar um tempo para nos atender. Antes de falar sobre seu mais recente trabalho, o projeto Scherer/Batten, gostaria de voltar um pouco no tempo e perguntar se no início de sua carreira, precisamente no lançamento do primeiro álbum com o Ides of March, você imaginou um dia ser um vencedor de prêmios, como um Grammy, vender alguns milhões de álbuns, ter hits no topo das paradas ou ter uma música indicada para o Oscar? O quão longe você chegou em relação aos seus sonhos? 

Jim Peterik: (Ri muito!) Quando você tem 19 anos e com um álbum sendo o número um, você está vivendo o momento. Não estávamos a contemplar o sucesso a longo prazo ou o impacto sobre o qual teríamos em um âmbito maior dentro do cenário. Então eu tenho que dizer que eu ultrapassei meus sonhos de jovem. E por uma distância considerável!

RtM: Eu estava lembrando uma entrevista que li há muito tempo, onde você falou sobre a inspiração para escrever "Vehicle", que se tornou seu primeiro grande sucesso. Gostaria que você nos lembrasse um pouco da história desta música, especialmente para os fãs e leitores mais novos, e descreva-nos como você se sentiu no momento, vendo que a música acabou tendo uma grande repercussão? 

Jim Peterik: Para explicar brevemente, eu escrevi "Vehicle" para ganhar minha namorada. Eu acho que funcionou, porque Karen e eu já estamos casados e felizes há 45 anos!

RtM: Nos anos 80 você criou vários sucessos com o Survivor, uma direção muito diferente do Ides of March. Quando você começou a banda, o que você tinha em mente para o Survivor? Você já imaginava o tipo de som que você queria? Algum artista ou banda em particular o inspirou naquele momento? 

Jim Peterik: Frankie e eu começamos a banda no inverno de 1977. Nosso objetivo era fazer Hard Rock e Melodic Rock. Tenho certeza de que o Foreigner estava em nossas inspirações, com seu som poderoso e mainstream. E um grande vocalista.

RtM: E como você vê essa formação atual do Survivor, capitaneada por Frankie?

JP: Frankie obteve os direitos de usar o nome quando deixei a banda em 1996. Estou feliz por ele continuar a espalhar para muitos mais a música que criamos.

RtM: Bom, eu tenho que falar sobre "Eye of the Tiger", que é uma música que se tornou um hino, e sempre é lembrada em cenas que se referem à ação ou bravura em filmes, comerciais e eventos esportivos, sinônimo de luta e busca pela superação, além de ter recebido muitas versões e covers. Você escreveu tantas outras excelentes músicas, mas você poderia nos contar um pouco sobre a importância desta música em sua história? 

JP: Todo artista parece ter aquela música que se destaca e o define. A "Eye of the Tiger" é essa música para mim. As histórias que ouvi de pessoas de como aquela música influenciaram suas vidas são realmente mais valiosas para mim do que o lado monetário. Os relatos de pessoas superando doenças, longas jornadas e desafios alimentam minha alma diariamente

RtM: Belas palavras, "Eye of the Tiger" é realmente magnífica. Voltando ao presente, gostaria que você falasse sobre como começou a parceria com Marc Scherer, com quem você lançou o álbum "Risk Everything". Outro grande artista que você "descobriu". 

JP: Ao longo dos anos, tive pelo menos duas "quase" chances de trabalhar com Marc. Cada vez que eu ouvia seu seu incrível registro de tenor em algum estúdio adjacente, acabava pegando seu número, mas acabava perdendo! Finalmente nossas estrelas se alinharam e tem sido uma veia muito rica de inspiração mútua. Este último CD, "Battle Zone", de Marc Scherer/Jennifer Batten é o ponto culminante final.

RtM: Falando em descobrir e produzir novos talentos, temos o seu companheiro de Pride of Lions, Toby Hitchcock, outra ótima voz que você apresentou aos fãs do Melodic Rock. Abrindo um parêntese, gostaria que você falasse sobre Toby e seu trabalho com você no Pride of Lions. 

JP: Minha sobrinha, Kelly Ferro, me deu uma dica de um cantor que ela havia ouvido, quando ela estava fazendo uma audição para um programa de talentos da TV, de Dick Clark em 2002. Depois de finalmente contatá-lo (na primeira vez em um show do Ides Of March em sua cidade natal, Valporaiso, Indiana) ele veio e gravou (e participou de audição) no meu estúdio. Quando minha gravadora, a  Frontiers, o ouviu, concordou que eu tinha encontrado o cantor da minha nova banda, o Pride Of Lions.

RtM: Continuando com a parceria com Marc, gostaria que você nos dissesse sobre como surgiu a ideia do projeto Scherer/Batten e como foi o processo de escolha das músicas que seriam parte do álbum, já que você procurou várias músicas, usando a expressão de Marc, do seu baú de tesouros? 

JP: Eu estava gravando um novo álbum com Marc, com algumas de minhas músicas favoritas do meu catálogo passado, que sempre senti que mereciam uma segunda chance. Nós trouxemos a incrível Jennifer Batten para fazer algumas guitarras no álbum, mas quando ouvimos seu trabalho incrível, nós sabíamos que ela estava destinada a ser mais que um músico contratado. Ela se tornou uma parte vital de uma poderosa nova entidade - Scherer/Batten. Como minha esposa, Karen, disse quando ouviu algumas músicas, ela disse: "Ela é como uma segunda voz". Nós três acabamos escrevendo 3 novas músicas para o álbum, incluindo a faixa-título.

RtM: Foi um achado trazer Jennifer Batten para o projeto. E como foi para trabalhar com ela? 

JP: É uma alegria trabalhar com ela. Sempre super preparada, criativa e focada.

RtM: Havia músicas com as quais vocês iniciaram a trabalhar, mas acabaram sendo excluídas?

JP: Sim. Havia algumas. Mas acho que escolhemos sabiamente.

RtM: Sobre as músicas que entraram no álbum, quais as que você gostou mais do resultado final? Eu preciso dizer-lhe que a nova versão para "The Sound of Your Voice", que foi gravada pelo 38 Special, achei incrível, mais vibrante e moderna.

JP: Essa também é uma das minhas faixas favoritas. E Jeff Carlisi, Don Barnes e Danny Chauncey adoram também!

RtM: E o processo de produção do álbum? Foi muito trabalho, devido o número de pessoas e grandes músicos envolvidos, e com agendas ocupadas?

JP: Todo mundo acabou concentrando suas forças neste álbum. Era uma "Rock Machine" bastante eficiente em comparação com a maioria.

RtM: A Frontiers já foi responsável por muitos retornos. Eles, ou algum outro selo, propuseram lançar um novo álbum do Survivor? Você já pensou  ou existe alguma possibilidade de lançar algo novo com a banda?
JP: Meus projetos atuais só incluem o Ides Of March - Pride of Lions - Scherer/Batten e The Songs. Todos novos e atuais.

RtM: Como você vê a indústria da música hoje em dia? Muitos artistas chegaram a dizer que não vale a pena fazer novas músicas ou gravar álbuns. O que você pensa sobre isso e o que o move para continuar a produzir e criar novas músicas?
JP: Eu faço isso como uma necessidade de comunicar minha música para tantas pessoas quanto eu puder. Eu tenho uma palavra de alegria e otimismo para compartilhar que não tem nada a ver com o comércio. Trata-se de paixão!

Interview - Jim Peterik: "I do this from the need of communicating my music to as many people as I can"

An accomplished hitmaker and great songwriter, a musician who experienced commercial success, selling millions of albums, putting songs at the top of the charts by age 19, with Ides of March in the 1970s, and later in the 1980s, winning a Grammy and nominated for an Oscar for Best Song. It has inspired millions of people with songs like "Eye of the Tiger", which is practically a patrimony of humanity.  (versão em português)

He has also written many songs for artists and groups such as Sammy Hagar, Van Zant, Beach Boys, 38 Special, Cheap Trick and Reo Speedwagon. He continues to produce and inspire people with his solo works and with Ides of March, Pride of Lions, Peterik/Scherer, and more recently with Scherer/Batten, a project which brings songs from him and also his production.

We had the opportunity to talk to this true music legend, who told us a bit more about this new project, and of course, some stories from his career. Check out:

RtM: Before we talk about the Scherer/Batten project, I would like to go back a little in time, and ask if at the beginning of your career at the time of the  release of the first album with Ides of March, you imagined one day to be a winner of awards such as a Grammy, selling a few million albums, having hits at the top of the charts, or having an Oscar-nominated song? How far have you come in relation to your dreams?

Jim Peterik: (Laughts) When you’re 19 with a number one record you’re living in the moment. We were not contemplating long term success or what impact if any we would have in the bigger scheme of things. So I’d have to say I’ve exceeded my young dreams. By a long shot!!

RtM: I was recalling a subject I read a long time ago, where you told about the inspiration to write "Vehicle", which became your first big hit. I would like you to remind us a bit of the history of this song, especially for younger  fans and readers, and describe to us how did you feel at the time, seeing that the song ended up having such a great repercussion? 

JP: The Cliff’s notes is that I wrote "Vehicle" to win back my girlfriend. I guess it worked because Karen and I have now been happily married for 45 years!

RtM: In the '80s you made several hits with Survivor, a very different direction from Ides of March. When did you start the band, what did you have in mind for Survivor? Did you already imagine the kind of sound you wanted? Did any artist or band in particular inspire you at that time? 

JP: Frankie and I started the band in the winter of 1977. Our goal was to make hard, melodic rock. I’m sure Foreigner was in our sites with their powerful mainstream sound. And a great lead singer.

RtM: Well, I have to talk about "Eye of the Tiger", which is a song that turned out to be an anthem, and is always remembered in scenes that refer to the action or bravery in movies, commercials and sporting events, being inspiration to overcome obstacles, besides having received already many cover versions. You wrote so many other great songs, but would you tell us a little about the importance of this song in your story? 

JP: Every artist seems to have that one song that breaks out and defines him. Eye of the Tiger is that song for me. The stories I hear from people of how that song influenced their lives are really more valuable to me than the monetary side. The accounts of rising up over illness, long odds and challenges feed my soul daily.

And what do you think about this Survivor with Frankie and other musicians?

JP: Frankie obtained the rights to use the name when I left the band in 1996. I’m happy that he continues to spread the music we created to so many.

RtM: Beautiful words!! "Eye of the Tiger" is a amazing song. Well, going back to the present, I would like you to talk about how started the partnership with Marc Scherer, with whom you released the album "Risk Everything". Another great artist that you have "discovered". 

JP: Through the years I had at least two near- misses with working with Marc. Each time I’d hear his amazing tenor in some adjacent studio and get his number then promptly misplace it! Finally our stars align and it’s been a very rich vein of mutual inspiration. This latest cd, "Battle Zone" by Marc Scherer/Jennifer Batten is the ultimate culmination.

RtM: Speaking of discovering and producing new talent, we have your Pride of Lions companion, Toby Hitchcock, another great voice you presented to Melodic Rock fans. Opening a parenthesis, I'd like you to talk about Toby and his work with you on Pride of Lions. 

JP: My niece Kelly Ferro gave me a heads up on a singer she heard when she herself was auditioning for a Dick Clark talent TV show back in 2002. After i finally tracked him down (in the first row of an Ides Of March show in his hometown Of Valporaiso Indiana he came and recorded (and auditioned) at my studio. When my label Frontiers heard him they agreed I’d found the Singer for my new band Pride Of Lions.

RtM: Frontiers has already been responsible for many returns. Have they, or some other label, proposed to release a new Survivor album? Have you even thought about launching something new, or even considered any possibility?

JP: My current projects include the Ides Of March- Pride of Lions- Scherer/Batten and The Songs. All new and current.

RtM: Continuing on the partnership with Marc, I would like you to tell us about how the idea of ​​the Scherer/Batten project came about, and how was the process of choosing the songs that would be part of the album, since you searched for several songs, using Marc's expression, from your treasure chest? 

JP: I was recording a new album with Marc of some of my favorite songs from my past catalogue that I always felt needed a second chance. We brought in the amazing Jennifer Batten to do some guitar work but as we heard her awesome work we new she was destined to be more than a sideman. She became a vital part of a powerful new entity- Scherer/Batten. As my wife Karen said when she first heard a few songs she said: “She’s like a second voice”. The 3 of us ended up writing 3 brand new songs for the record including the title track.

RtM: And how was it to work with Jennifer? 

JP: She is a joy to work with. Always super prepared, Creative and focused.

RtM: There were songs that you started working on them, but they ended up being left out?

JP: Yes. There are a few. But I think we chose wisely.

RtM: About the songs that entered the album, which ones did you must like the final result? I need to tell you that the new version for "The Sound of Your Voice", which had been recorded by 38 Special, I thought it was incredible, more vibrant and modern. 

JP: That’s one of my favorite cuts too. And Jeff Carlisi, Don Barnes and Danny Chauncey Love it too!

RtM: And the process of producing the album? Was it a lot of work, because the number of people and great musicians involved, and with busy agendas? 

JP: Everyone kind of put their lives on hold for this record. It was pretty efficient rock machine compared to most.

RtM: How do you see the music industry nowadays? Many artists have come to say that it's hardly worth making new songs or recording albums. What do you think about it, and what moves you to continue producing and creating new music?

JP: I do this from the need of communicating my music to as many people as I can. I have a word of joy and optimism to share which has nothing to do with commerce. It’s about passion. 

RtM: Jim, I would like to ask many more things, but I do not want to take up too much of your time  to answer us, and let me say that we love your work!

Scherer/Batten: Pérola do Hard/Melodic Rock Contemporâneo

A história deste projeto reunindo o vocalista Marc Scherer e a guitarrista Jennifer Batten começa em 2010, quando iniciou a parceria de Scherer com Jim Peterik (Pride of Lions, Ides of March, sua primeira banda, a qual o single "Vehicle" foi o mais vendido da história da Warner Music, e claro, Survivor, com a qual foi nominado ao Grammy e indicado ao Oscar de melhor canção com "Eye of the Tiger", que foi tema do filme "Rocky III"). Peterik é um ícone da música, principalmente se falarmos do Hard Rock e Melodic Rock, criando pérolas do estilo, seja na década de 80 com o Survivor (quem não conhece "Eye of the Tiger"?, que foi tema do filme "Rocky III"), ou com seus projetos mais atuais, como o Pride of Lions. Em 2010, impressionado com a voz de Marc Scherer, inicia a compor para o que viria a ser o projeto Peterik/Scherer, a fim de mostrar a capacidade e talento de Marc.  (English Version)

O álbum "Risk Everything" foi lançado em 2015 pela Frontiers Music, gravadora Italiana responsável hoje por uma gama enorme de lançamentos do estilo, incluíndo em seu cast novos nomes e nomes consagrados e cultuados da época de ouro do Hard e Melodic Rock.

Da parceria e amizade, e entre uma conversa e outra, surgiu a ideia deste novo projeto, onde seriam "resgatadas" algumas pérolas do baú de composições de Jim Peterik, canções que, na visão de Marc, mereceriam uma nova chance. Foram então escolhidas 8 canções, as quais ganharam nova vida e a interpretação de Marc.

E para tornar isso tudo ainda mais coeso e atual, afinal eram canções de diferentes épocas, e também com parcerias diferentes, Jim tem a ideia de trazer para o projeto a fantástica Jennifer Batten, guitarrista que trabalhou com nomes como Michael Jackson e Jeff Beck. Jennifer deu  a liga final, trazendo bom gosto, feeling e doses de virtuosismo. O trio então escreve três novas canções para o álbum, sendo a primeira delas a que se tornaria faixa título do projeto: "Battlezone"

Lançado via Melodic Rock Records dia 22 de setembro, "Scherer/Batten's Battlezone" traz um impressionante track-list com 11 peças de arte do Hard Rock e Melodic Rock, com uma sonoridade pavimentada por aquele feeling dos anos 80, porém soando atual e coeso. São canções onde a musicalidade e bom gosto atingem em cheio nossos ouvidos, transitando por momentos ora mais Hard Rock, ora mais Melodic Rock, em diversos coloridos e sabores. Canções recheadas de grandes arranjos, belas melodias e inspiradas performances de Scherer e Batten, os quais são apoiados por um line-up de primeira linha, incluindo músicos de grupos como Chicago, Survivor, World Stage e outros. 

O próprio Jim Peterik se encarregou  da produção que está excelente, trazendo aquela qualidade que o estilo exige, e extraindo o melhor dos músicos, o que valorizou ainda mais as suas composições.

Aos primeiros acordes da faixa de abertura,  "Crazy Love", um Hard Rock com groove, podemos sentir o feeling e virtuosismo de Jennifer, aliados a grande voz de Marc.Destaque também para o refrão e pegajosos backing vocals; "Rough Diamond" alterna belas e suaves melodias de teclado, com a pegada e virtuosismo de Jennifer; "What do You Really Think" tem um andamento vibrante, e traz como destaque o magnífico refrão e as grandes melodias de teclado. Marc mostra feeling e técnica, passeando por regiões mais suaves e mais altas, às vezes parecendo duelar com a onipresente guitarra de Batten, sempre escolhendo belos timbres e exibindo virtuosismo.

"The Sound of Your Voice" é daquelas que nasceram destinadas a ser um Hit, e apesar de ter tido uma atenção na época em que foi gravada pelo 38 Special (no álbum "Bone Against Steel" de 1991), merecia nova chance, e ganhou uma versão mais vibrante e potente. Possui aquele feeling dos 80's, mas soa perfeitamente atual. A voz de Marc e as guitarras de Jennifer, assim como os arranjos de teclado, deram mais vida à canção; "Battlezone", a faixa título, é um Hard potente, virtuoso e com grandes vocais e impressionantes melodias e refrãos! Uma das 3 canções novas compostas pelo trio, e que batizou o álbum. Título forte, canção idem!

"Cuts Deep" é um  belo Melodic Rock. Balada de bom gosto, naquele estilo radiofônico dos anos 80, trazendo um dos mais marcantes refrãos do álbum, além de belos arranjos vocais e instrumental inspirado e carregado de feeling; "The Harder I Try" também é outro Melodic Rock de extremo bom gosto. Belas melodias de teclado e saxofone (este a cargo da ganhadora do Grammy Mindi Abair) trazem um ar melancólico, com Marc sabendo colocar a emoção correta; "Dreaming With My Eyes Wide Open", como o título até sugere, traz deliciosas melodias e cativante refrão, os quais nos fazem "sonhar com os olhos meio abertos".

"Space and Time" inicia com andamento moderado e suave, com Jennifer extraindo belos timbres. Suave e sofisticada, a canção cresce no refrão, que é apoiado por belos arranjos de teclado. Aquele sabor dos anos 80 também se faz presente; "Tender Fire", mais uma das novas canções compostas exclusivamente para o projeto, traz uma linha cativante de teclado, destacando o refrão quase sinfônico. As intervenções de Jennifer são certeiras e provocantes, e Marc esbanja classe e groove; "All Roads" encerra este belíssimo álbum de forma magistral. Power-Ballad com cativantes linhas vocais e melodias. O refrão traz algo de Soul Music, e Marc parece ter colocado doses extras de emoção em seus vocais.

Não é exagero afirmar que Marc Scherer, Jennifer Batten, e claro Jim Peterik e mais o incrível time de músicos envolvidos no projeto, cometeram uma "masterpiece" do estilo. Bom gosto, Feeling e atuações exuberantes. São onze faixas onde cada uma das músicas soa como uma pequena peça de arte, tal o cuidado com os detalhes, valorizando a musicalidade e inspiração dos músicos. Diversos “sabores”, tendo base o Melodic Rock dos anos 80, leia-se aí grandes melodias, excelentes teclados e guitarras, e um capricho enorme nos arranjos vocais.

Scherer/Batten' Battlezone: Contemporaneous Melodic Rock Pearl!

We can say that the story of this project with the vocalist Marc Scherer and guitarist Jennifer Batten begins in 2010, when started Scherer's partnership with Jim Peterik (Ides of March, that song "Vehicle" was the fastest selling single in Warner's history, and sure, Survivor, which he was nominated for a Grammy for the song "Eye of the Tiger). Peterik is an icon, especially if we talk about Hard Rock and Melodic Rock, creating pearls of the style, either in the 80's with Survivor (who does not know "Eye of the Tiger"?) Or with his most current projects, such as Pride of Lions. The album "Risk Everything" was released in 2015 by Frontiers Music, the Italian label responsible today for a huge range of releases of the style, including in its cast new names and well-known and celebrated names from the golden era of Hard, Classic and Melodic Rock.

From the partnership and friendship, and between a conversation and another, the idea of ​​this new project arose, where some pearls from the Peterik's vault, songs that, in Marc's view, would merit a new chance. They were chosen 8 songs, which gained new life with the interpretation of Marc.

And to make it all even more cohesive, after all were songs from different eras, and also with different partnerships, Jim has the idea to bring to the project the fantastic Jennifer Batten, guitarist who worked with names like Michael Jackson and Jeff Beck. Jennifer gave the final ingredient, bringing good taste, feeling and doses of virtuosity. The trio then writes three new songs for the album, the first of which would become title track of the project: "Battlezone".

Released via Melodic Rock Records on September 22, "Scherer/Batten's Battlezone" features an impressive track-list featuring 11 pieces of Hard Rock and Melodic Rock art, with a sonority paved by that 80's feel, but sounding current and cohesive . 

Songs where the musicality and good taste reach our ears full, passing for moments more Hard Rock, or more AOR/Melodic Rock, in diverse colors and flavors. Songs filled with great arrangements, beautiful melodies and inspired performances by Scherer and Batten, all of which are backed by a top-notch line-up, including musicians from groups like Chicago, Survivor, World Stage and others.

Jim Peterik himself was in charge of the production that is excellent, bringing the quality that the style requires, and drawing the best of the musicians, which further enhanced their compositions.

At the first chords of the opening track, "Crazy Love", we have a energic Hard Rock with groove. Highlighting the feeling and virtuosity of Jennifer, allied to the great voice of Marc, and also for the chorus and sticky backing vocals; "Rough Diamond" alternates beautiful and soft keyboard melodies, with Jennifer's footprint and virtuosity.

"What Do You Really Think" has a vibrant tempo, and brings out the magnificent chorus and the great keyboard melodies. Marc shows feeling and technique, walking through softer and higher regions, sometimes seeming to duel with the ubiquitous guitar of Batten, always choosing beautiful timbres and displaying virtuosity.

"The Sound of Your Voice" is one of those born destined to be a Hit, and despite having paid attention at the time it was recorded by 38 Special (on 1991's "Bone Against Steel" album), it deserved a new chance, and won a more vibrant and powerful version. It has that 80's feel, but it sounds perfectly current. Marc's voice and Jennifer's guitars, as well as the keyboard arrangements, made the song more alive; "Battlezone", the title track, is a powerful, virtuous Hard and with great vocals and impressive melodies and choruses! One of 3 new songs composed by the trio, and that baptized the album. Strong title, idem song!

"Cuts Deep" is a beautiful Melodic Rock. Tasteful ballad, in that radio style of the 80's, bringing one of the most remarkable refrains of the album, as well as beautiful vocal arrangements and instrumental inspired and loaded with feeling; "The Harder I Try" is also another Melodic Rock of extreme good taste. Beautiful melodies of keyboard and saxophone (this one in charge of the winner of the Grammy, Mindi Abair) bring a melancholic air, with Marc knowing to put the correct emotion; "Dreaming With My Eyes Wide Open", as the title even suggests, brings delightful melodies and captivating chorus, which make us "dream with eyes wide open" for sure!

"Space and Time" begins with a moderate and smooth tempo, with Jennifer extracting beautiful timbres. Soft and sophisticated, the song grows in the chorus, which is backed up by beautiful keyboard arrangements. That flavor of the 80s is also present; "Tender Fire" plus one of the new songs composed exclusively for the project, brings a captivating line of keyboard, highlighting the quasi-symphonic chorus. Jennifer's interventions are accurate and provocative, and Marc lavishes class and groove; "All Roads" ends this beautiful album masterfully. Power-Ballad with captivating vocal lines and melodies. The chorus brings something of Soul Music, and Marc seems to have put extra doses of emotion into his vocals.

It is no exaggeration to say that Marc Scherer, Jennifer Batten, and of course Jim Peterik and the incredible team of musicians involved in the project, committed a masterpiece of the style. Good taste, Feeling and lush performances. There are eleven tracks where each one of the songs sounds like a small piece of art, such as the care of the details, valuing the musicality and inspiration of the musicians. Several "flavors", based on the Melodic Rock of the 80's, and it means great melodies, excellent keyboards and guitars, and a huge whim in the vocal arrangements.

Pride Of Lions: Empolgante e Moderno Melodic Rock, Altamente Indicado a Fãs de Survivor, Journey e Foreigner!

Journey, Toto, Survivor, Foreigner, são nomes que lhe dizem algo ? Então provavelmente Melodic Rock e  AOR é sua praia (ou, simplesmente curte a boa música), e já deve ter ouvido Pride Of Lions, banda do guitarrista Jim Peterik (Ides of March e Survivor, além de co-escrever o clássico Eye of the Tiger, também é co-autor e colaborador de muitos artistas como Lynyrd Skynyrd, Joe Lynn Turner, Sammy Hagar, Beach Boys...), na qual a voz de Toby Hitchcock foi revelada ao grande público.

"Immortal" é o quarto álbum de estúdio da banda encabeçada pela dupla, novamente lançado pela Frontiers, gravadora italiana que hoje é a meca do Hard/AOR/Melodic Rock, e já era aguardado com ansiedade, pois o último álbum, "Roaring of Dreams", é de 2007,  mas a espera foi recompensada, pois essa pausa um tanto longa (pelo menos para o Pride Of Lions, pois Peterik continuou envolvido em vários projetos e Toby lançou seu solo este ano) parece ter inspirado a dupla Peterik e Hitchcock ainda mais.

Peterik assina praticamente 100% das composições, enquanto que Toby já é uma afirmação, com sua voz poderosa e marcante, herdeiro legítimo dos grandes intérpretes daquela época de ouro nos ano 80, tem um desempenho impecável no álbum. Felizes do fãs, que este ano já tiveram o lançamento do álbum solo do vocalista, também lançado pelo selo Italiano Frontiers.

Cumprindo o que prometeu quando criou o Pride of Lions em 2003, o álbum traz o melhor daquele AOR/Melodic Rock "oitentista", mas com uma sonoridade moderna e atual, com grandes vocais, os teclados muito bem colocados, sempre imprescindíveis neste estilo, e melodias irresistíveis.

A faixa de abertura, "Immortal", é um hit imediato e excelente cartão de visitas, com melodias límpidas e marcantes, ponte perfeita e refrão daqueles que grudam na hora, além de um grande trabalho vocal, com Peterik dividindo várias partes com Toby, aliás, quando este abre a boca ganha a cena, pois realmente é incrível a voz deste cara! Se julgar alguém pela aparência e olhar uma imagem do Toby confesso que é difícil imaginar que aquele cara com visual simples, praticamente com nada que indique ser um músico de AOR ou Hard Rock, e seja dono de uma inacreditável voz!

Continuando com as faixas do álbum, "Delusional", que também foi escolhida para ser o clip, tem todos os elementos prometidos por Jim desde o início da banda, nos remetendo ao Melodic Rock dos anos 80. Uma empolgante semi-balada, destacando a voz madura e competente de Jim, belas melodias e mais um refrão perfeito, com show de Toby, mostrando a extensão de sua bela voz; "Tie Down the Wind", com um andamento mid-tempo, também possui melodias sensacionais, com mais um show de Toby, um vocalista que canta com a alma e o coração, fechando uma trinca de abertura de alto nível! Veja bem, na terceira faixa os caras já ganharam o jogo!!

Desnecessário comentar faixa por faixa, o que temos é um álbum de qualidade alta, com Peterik mostrando mais uma vez que é um grande compositor e criador de hits, criando melodias e refrãos marcantes e de extremo bom gosto. "Vital Signs", pra citar mais um exemplo, e que tem uma curiosidade sobre ela, pois era para ter sido a faixa título do álbum homônimo do Survivor, lançado em 1984, porém não estava totalmente pronta, e somente 25 anos depois, aqui está ela, e é mais uma daquelas músicas que possuem aquela aura estilo clássicos do AOR ou, como também era chamado, "Rock de Arena", tão popular nos anos 80, que nos deu clássicos como a citada "Eye of the Tiger", "Love Ain't no Strangers", "If Looks Could Kill" e outros hinos (Relembre, ou conheça, aqui neste link). Pode parecer exagero, mas o Pride of Lions traz muito dessa mágica de volta, e Peterik se mostra bem mais inspirado que outros remanescentes daquela cena, como Journey, que lançou um álbum um tanto morno.

Dentre canções bombásticas, grandes baladas, ótimas melodias e refrãos, o Pride of Lions mostra mais uma vez ao que veio, esbanjando classe e melodias incríveis, tudo valorizado pela excelente produção e a grande interpretação vocal desta "descoberta" de Peterik, chamado Toby Hitchcok. Fica difícil parar de ouvir um álbum como este!
