Entrevista: Snowy Shaw - "The Shaw Must Go On!" 25 anos de Loucura em Nome do Metal!

Snowy Shaw é sem dúvida um dos mais carismáticos, interessantes e talentosos personagens da história do Metal, tendo um currículo e uma história fantásticos, numa carreira, como todo mundo, com altos e baixos, mas sempre sem medo de ousar e olhando para a frente. (Read the English Version Here)

Completando mais de 25 anos de carreira, Snowy acaba de lançar um pacote com DVD/CD ao vivo, intitulado "Snowy Shaw: The Live Show, 25 years of Madness in the Name of Metal", trazendo um apanhado dessa história, onde fez parte e colaborou com diversas bandas, como King Diamond e Mercyful Fate, Dream Evil, Memento Mori, XXX, Notre Dame, Therion, Dimmu Borgir, Sabaton e tantos outros.

Além deste lançamento, que marca, não só uma comemoração de sua história, mas também o início de uma nova fase. Conversamos com este verdadeiro super-herói do Metal para saber mais deste lançamento, um pouco de história, planos e muito mais, numa entrevista muito legal, com muitas curiosidades e muito bem humorada, outra marca do sempre simpático e carismático Snowy! Confira, "The SHAW must go on!

Road to Metal: Bem, você está lançando o seu DVD/CD ao vivo agora em setembro. Pode nos falar um pouco mais a respeito dele,  e como foi a escolha do set list? Afinal de contas, são tantos álbuns e bandas que você trabalhou! Deve ter sido um trabalho árduo escolher quais músicas entrariam.

Snowy Shaw: Você está certo, há um “caixão de tesouros”  sem fundo de canções para escolher, mas que não foi a parte mais difícil. Como o slogan nos banners anunciou: "Snowy Shaw toca as músicas favoritas de todas as suas  ex-bandas", eu basicamente só selecionei as músicas que eu mais gosto e que eu pensei que formariam um mix legal para os shows ao vivo, também dependendo dos músicos e estrelas que estariam disponíveis para a ocasião.

"Quanto ao fato de que a maior parte das músicas que entraram, foram canções que eu escrevi, foi apenas uma mera coincidência ... Só que não! (Risos) Naturalmente, existe uma tendência de gostar das músicas que você mesmo criou, caso contrário, você está definitivamente fazendo algo errado!"

O maior problema em escolher as músicas foi realmente todas as grandes músicas que eu tive que excluir, porque você simplesmente não pode fazer um show com umas 5 horas! Nada me impede de incluí-las no futuro, penso eu. 

RtM: Qual você considera que foi a a parte mais difícil dessa produção então?

Snowy Shaw: A parte mais difícil, e então nós estamos falando do tipo de coisa que iria matar a maioria das pessoas (risos), tinha muito pouco a ver com a música em si, mas pela organização e coordenação do evento como um todo, desde as filmagens, gravações, reunindo a equipe certa, o deslocamento das estrelas convidadas, produção de palco e adereços, concepção e construção, merchandising, promoção e a lista vai crescendo e crescendo, e quando você acaba fazendo basicamente tudo sozinho, é uma carga de trabalho quase desumana. 

Até o momento do show propriamente dito, eu estava um zumbi desgastado, mas  a maioria das pessoas não percebem é claro. Coloque grande sorriso e apenas faça, The Shaw Must Go On!! (risos)

RtM: E são tantas bandas e estilos diferentes, este DVD também vai mostrar toda a sua versatilidade, você trabalhou com bandas como King Diamond e Merciful Fate, Dream Evil, Therion, Notre Dame, entre outros! Eu acredito que você também teve que pensar bem sobre os músicos que iriam acompanhá-lo neste show ao vivo.

Snowy Shaw: Com certeza, não foi uma tarefa fácil, e acima de tudo, músicos  versáteis e capazes de tocar qualquer estilo de forma convincente.

Sem dúvida a minha banda conta com alguns dos melhores músicos do mundo, sem dever nada a ninguém. Para esses dois shows que eu gravei e filmei para o pacote DVD/CD, foram diferentes line-ups do primeiro para o segundo.

Não tanto por escolha como por pura coincidência e no futuro pode haver uma mistura de ambos, dependendo das circunstâncias e quem está disponível quando se trata de turnês e fazer shows.

Eu posso ser visto como um líder exigente, mas na verdade, eu  sou dez vezes mais exigente comigo mesmo.

RtM: E como foi a escolha do lugar certo para a gravação deste CD/DVD? Além disso, é claro, a fase de produção, imagem e som, são muitos detalhes que envolvem que envolvem uma produção dessas!

Snowy Shaw: Infelizmente o Madison Square Garden, em Nova York, já estava reservado nas datas que eu tinha em mente ... Não! (risos) Estou brincando, obviamente. Eu escolhi para o primeiro show minha cidade, Gotemburgo, a.k.a. Metal Town. Não só por razões de conveniência e de logística, mas porque, acredite ou não, eu raramente toco na minha cidade ou na Suécia em geral.

No entanto, acabei tendo de mudar de local algumas vezes, com base no aumento de pré-venda de ingressos, e também dependendo do local que melhor se adequaria ao tipo de produção de palco que eu pretendia construir, e também com o que seria melhor do ponto de vista de filmagem.

RtM: Provavelmente teremos algumas surpresas e alguns conteúdos extras no DVD?

Snowy Shaw: Sim, além do show normal, há algumas coisas como bônus de bastidores, entrevistas e outras coisas.

Single "Dusk chegou a alcançar os primeiros lugares no Itunes

RtM: Em 22 de julho, você lançou o single "Dusk".  Conte pra gente um pouco sobre este single, que foi muito bem sucedido no Itunes.

Snowy Shaw: Quanto ao Sinlge “Dusk”, fiquei muito satisfeito em ver que foi direto para o número um nas paradas de rock do iTunes. Eu nunca prestei atenção a esse tipo de coisa no passado, mas eu pensei que essa música merecia uma segunda chance, uma vez que tinha grande potencial, e não é que eu estava certo! O single foi retirado do vindouro DVD/CD (N. do R.: que está sendo lançado agora e setembro, e a entrevista foi feita na segunda quinzena de agosto) , e o que nem todo mundo sabe é que é uma musicado  Notre Dame, que foi originalmente lançada em um álbum de 99.

RtM: Quem sabe já está vindo um trabalho solo em breve?

Snowy Shaw: Claro, mas não apenas um. Este pacote DVD/CD apropriadamente intitulado “The Liveshow: 25 anos de loucura em nome do Metal”, poderia ser visto como um somatório de meu passado, mas também funcionar como o pontapé inicial para os próximos 25 anos como artista solo.

RtM: Um monte de trabalho com o DVD, e muito mais por vir!

Snowy Shaw: Todo o processo de elaboração e finalização deste pacote DVD/CD  foi um processo prolongado, para não dizer uma “Hellride” (uma jornada infernal!) mas eu queria que fosse tão bom quanto possível, então eu passei muitas horas trabalhando nele, a edição de arquivos de filmes, mixando a música, etc... E então fundar minha própria gravadora,  e todo o trabalho de produção, que não era algo que eu tinha calculado, mas um homem tem que fazer o que um homem tem fazer.

Este “porém” fez com que o meu plano original de gravar novas músicas ser colocado em segundo plano no mesmo período. Eu mal posso esperar para começar!

Ah Sim, eu quase esqueci  de mencionar...algo mais surgiu no meio, que foi um ano inteiro de turnê pelo mundo com o Sabaton, que era uma ótima oportunidade de jogar tudo pro alto, e eu não perderia por nada no mundo.

RtM: Falando sobre Sabaton, como foi o trabalho com a banda?

Snowy Shaw: Eu posso dizer honestamente que eu nunca trabalhei com um grupo mais bem organizado e agradável de pessoas do que com os caras do Sabaton e equipe. Não estou dizendo que todos os outros e outras bandas não eram ótimos, mas com o Sabaton eu realmente amaldiçoei a mim mesmo por ter a ambição de realizar meu próprio trabalho. Caso contrário, eu poderia apenas ir junto e ter o melhor trabalho do mundo pra sempre, e ao lado desses grandes caras .

Mas, mais uma vez, você sabe o que eles dizem: “Um homem tem que fazer o que um homem tem fazer ...." (risos)

RtM: Nesse período você também teve o convite para gravar os vocais do álbum do Mad Architect?  Que a propósito, gostei muito.

Snowy Shaw: Fico feliz em saber que você gostou do material do Mad Architect. Eu tenho que dizer em primeiro lugar que este álbum saiu-se melhor do que eu esperava. A maior parte do material eu gravei enquanto estava em turnê com Sabaton, sempre que eu encontrava um pequeno intervalo de tempo para fazer alguns vocais em nossa agenda muito agitada. 

O líder Magnus Daun é um cara muito legal, e foi muito fácil trabalhar com ele. Eles são da minha cidade, Gotemburgo, mas eu realmente não tinha encontrado o cara pessoalmente, até o mês passado, quando nos encontramos pela primeira vez. Estamos pensando em fazer um novo álbum ainda este ano, sempre que eu encontrar tempo e o tempo permitir. Ansioso por isso já!

RtM: Sem dúvida, um grande momento de sua carreira foi a entrada na banda de King Diamond, e depois também no Mercyful Fate. Como foi a sensação de fazer parte destas verdadeiras lendas, e como foi trabalhar ao lado de King Diamond?

Snowy Shaw: Eu sou eternamente grato pela oportunidade que tive de participar do King Diamond bem no auge de sua carreira, em 1989, foi ótimo trabalhar com King & Cia, mas no outono de 1994 eu decidi sair e focar toda a minha energia no ILLWILL, banda que eu nutria grandes expectativas.

RtM: E Sobre Mercyful, conte-nos um pouco sobre sua participação nos álbuns "In the Shadows" e "Time". Você chegou a participar das composições?

Snowy Shaw: Além de trazer os arranjos de bateria e colaborar para a realização dos desejos de King, eu não estava envolvido em nenhuma das composições do Mercyful Fate. E isso é parte das razões pela qual eu deixei a banda, já que eu não tinha permissão para contribuir criativamente de forma alguma. Eu certamente não tenho problemas em entender seu ponto de vista sobre o assunto, já que praticamente penso o mesmo pra mim. Para a maioria dos músicos/instrumentistas isso funciona perfeitamente bem, mas, a longo prazo, para mim, isso não acontece.

RtM: E sua autobiografia? E eu li em algum lugar que você estaria escrevendo, e prepara o lançamento para um futuro próximo. Como está o andamento deste projeto? Você certamente tem muito pra contar nesses anos todos de carreira, e tendo trabalhado com tantas pessoas e bandas.

Snowy Shaw: Sim, acho que essa informação vazou de alguma forma.  Sim, minha vida tem sido uma jornada,  com constantes  altos e baixos, e com certeza tenho um monte de histórias para contar.

A verdade é que eu tenho estado tão extremamente ocupado com outras coisas que eu não tive tempo de escrever muito em todo este ano. Mas eu não tenho pressa, com tantas coisas interessantes acontecendo o tempo todo.

RtM: Acredito que o Notre Dame é uma banda que você tem um carinho e dedicação especial, e vejo como um trabalho que diz muito sobre a sua direção musical. Estou certo?

Snowy Shaw:  O Notre Dame foi muito mais uma extensão da minha imaginação fértil, e poderíamos dizer que mexia com todos os tipos de coisas que sempre fascinaram e me inspiraram dentro deste caldeirão de bruxas, resultando numa  saborosa “bitches brew” (trocadilho com a expressão “witches brew”).

RtM: Uma curiosidade que tenho é sobre o que eu li uma vez, que um dos membros de Notre Dame era um personagem fictício, é verdade?

Snowy Shaw: Eram todos personagens fictícios e eu sou um super-herói ... se me permite ser um pouco vago e enigmático (risos). Mais sobre isso em meu livro em breve...

RtM: Falando em "personagens", lembrei dos seus conterrâneos do Ghost, que é algo do tipo que sua criativa mente conceberia, inclusive até houve comentários que você poderia fazer parte do grupo, e você brincou com isso em algumas entrevistas. Mas, vá saber..heheeh.
Snowy Shaw: Hehehe, obrigado! Sim, chegaram a surgir rumores que eu seria o baterista deles.

RtM: Você também pretende lançar outros álbuns com Notre Dame?

Snowy Shaw: Eu não vou fazer mais álbuns do Notre Dame, pois agora vou focar na minha carreira solo. Ela terá muitos dos mesmos elementos do Notre Dame, embora com uma direção um pouco diferente. Também terá a mesma formação do Notre Dame .... se é que me entende! (Risos).

RtM: E sobre quais os temas você mais curte escrever, o que inspira você? Acredito que filmes de ficção e horror, bem como histórias em quadrinhos, até por causa da estética de algumas capas, camisetas e outros materiais de seu trabalho.

Snowy Shaw: Bem, essa é uma boa hipótese, embora seja bastante difícil de perder minha propensão para a estética de clássicos de terror e outras coisas. Eu não sei o que me inspira, a criatividade é a minha verdadeira paixão e é uma coisa “self-serving”, eu acho. 

A minha maior paixão na vida é escrever músicas, ser criativo e vir com conceitos e todos os tipos de coisas visualmente e musicalmente falando, e além. Infelizmente tenho tantas outras coisas para cuidar, gerir os negócios e toda a administração e organização, que eu considero uma verdadeira bênção sempre que eu encontro um pouco de tempo para realmente colocar fora tudo isso e realmente tocar ou trabalhar nas músicas.

RtM: E tendo trabalhado com tantas pessoas, você conseguiria citar quais bandas ou pessoas que você se sente ou se sentiu mais confortável de trabalha lado, e se você poderia citar um momento que considera um dos mais importantes de sua carreira, e se teve alguma que foi uma decepção?

Snowy Shaw: Com exceção do Sabaton talvez, eu nunca me diverti tanto trabalhando com outra banda como com o Dream Evil.

E não é nenhum segredo que as coisas aconteceram muito feias e rápidas com Dimmu Borgir, infelizmente. Normalmente, quando as minhas expectativas são muito altas eu acabo mais decepcionado, como foi o caso com o Dimmu, Illwill, XXX e alguns outros.

RtM: Lembrei-me também o episódio "Dimmu Borgir", e a notícia de que você foi anunciado oficialmente como um membro da banda em um dia, mas deixou a banda no dia seguinte, voltando ao Therion.

Snowy Shaw: Bem, há, obviamente, muito mais do que isso. Você não acredita seriamente que eu poderia ter conseguido gravar baixo e vocais, lançar dois vídeos, fazer sessões de fotos e ensaios e,  tipo, em 5-6 diferentes cidades/países em um único dia?

Foi algo perto de 7 meses eu acho, mas sem entrar em detalhes tudo o que posso dizer neste momento é que houve muita turbulência e merda acontecendo com o manager da banda, para que no final eu ficasse tão farto de tudo que eu desisti e voltei para a minha família no Therion.

RtM: Eu acredito que o trabalho com Therion e Christofer Johnsson, também é algo que o satisfaça muito, e os fãs também tem certeza que é uma grande fusão. Você poderia comentar um pouco sobre o seu relacionamento com o Therion, como o convite para integrar o line-up surgiu, e que pontos  mais o atraíram a trabalhar com a banda?

Snowy Shaw: Eu realmente gostei de trabalhar com Therion. Durante os primeiros anos, foi tudo fantástico e eu adorei, especialmente a turnê mundial  do Gothic Kabbalah de 2007, eu tenho um grande respeito por Christofer como líder de banda e empresário e com o que ele realizou com sua banda por quase 30 anos agora. Muito impressionante. Nós ainda somos muito bons amigos, Therion é como uma família.

RtM: Inclusive eu estava assistindo o recente DVD do Therion, “Adulruna Rediviva”.

Snowy Shaw: Grande! Eu ainda não tive tempo de assistir! (Risos)

RtM: E você vai estar envolvido no próximo álbum do Therion e próxima turnê?

Snowy Shaw: Eu acho que não, a partir de agora vou me concentrar 200% no meu próprio material, e é por isso que eu saia de todas as outras bandas, embora eu possa fazer algum projeto ocasional de estúdio, como o Opera Diabolicus e Mad Architect.

RtM: Você canta, toca vários instrumentos, compor e até mesmo transita entre muitos estilos! Conte-nos um pouco de quando você começou a sua carreira como músico, quem o influenciou no início?

Snowy Shaw: Hmm, longa história, mas deixe-me ver. Eu primeiro entrei de cabeça no KISS quando eu descobri o álbum Destroyer, eu tinha uns 7 anos e foi uma daquelas experiência tipo "Wow!!" o antes/depois, de como ele mudou a minha vida para sempre. Eu casualmente ouvia Purple, Sweet e Nazareth antes disso, mas com o KISS era algo completamente diferente. A música em si é apenas uma parte de um quadro muito maior, embora neste álbum em particular a produção fenomenal do super gênio Bob Ezrin foi nada menos que uma verdadeira obra-prima, era a imagem  de quão grnde era a vida, aplicado a uma criança que estava enlouquecida com os filmes de terror e super-heróis dos quadrinhos.

Eu não comecei a tocar até cerca de 5 anos mais tarde, quando eu mais ou menos forcei alguns colegas de classe a formar uma banda de rock, e não poderíamos ser piores, nenhum de nós tinha visto uma guitarra elétrica senão em fotos nesse ponto (risos). Por alguma razão eu escolhi a bateria, provavelmente por causa de Peter Criss do Kiss, embora naquele ponto em 1980-81 eu tinha desde muito desistido de Kiss e estava mais em AC/DC e na nova onda de bandas de rock sueco, que cantavam em nossa língua nativa. O que também ofereceu um modelo onde eu poderia escrever letras de música, como eu não falava Inglês.

RtM: No começo você já pensou em aprender e tocar vários instrumentos?

Snowy Shaw: Logo percebi que bateria não era a escolha ideal de instrumento quando se tratava de escrever canções, e uma vez que eu sempre tive mais ideias do que as pessoas que eu toquei, eu tive que aprender um pouco sobre guitarra ou baixo apenas com o intuito de apresentar a minha música ideias para os outros caras, e eu acho que aos poucos eu fui ficando um pouco melhor no que fazia.

RtM: Depois você também começou a cantar.
Snowy Shaw: O canto não me ocorreu até muito mais tarde, mas praticamente pelo mesmo motivo, por necessidade. Todas as bandas que eu formava com grandes ideias e conceitos em mente, em breve começavam a deteriorar-se porque parecia totalmente impossível encontrar um bom cantor e, portanto, não poderia passar para o próximo passo e fazer shows ou gravar qualquer coisa, o que foi extremamente frustrante para mim. A partir de vários aspectos, não é apenas a combinação mais lógica, um cantor/baterista, por isso nem passou pela minha mente, até que lá pelos meus 20 anos eu resolvi arriscar.

RtM: Bom,Muito obrigado Snowy, obrigado por tudo, pela música, com certeza você faz os meus dias e de muitos fãs serem melhores !! Deixo o espaço final para que você envie uma mensagem para os fãs brasileiros!

Snowy Shaw: Obrigado pelo contato, foi um prazer. Atualmente estou trabalhando em acordos com selos brasileiros para que eu possa lançar minha música aí, e eu realmente não posso esperar para levar o meu próprio show para o seu belo país. Quanto mais cedo melhor! Obrigado por seu apoio, isso significa o mundo para mim. Te vejo na turnê de 2015?

Snowy Shaw: The Shaw Must Go On!

Snowy Shaw is undoubtedly one of the most charismatic, talented and interesting characters in the history of Metal, having a fantastic curriculum and history, a career, like everyone else, with ups and downs, but always without fear of daring and looking forward . Completing more than 25 year career, Snowy has just released a package with a live DVD/CD, entitled "Snowy Shaw: The Live Show, 25 years of Madness in the Name of Metal", bringing an overview of this history, who was part and collaborated with several bands, like King Diamond and Mercyful Fate, Dream Evil, Memento Mori, XXX, Notre Dame, Therion, Dimmu Borgir, Sabaton and many others. 

In addition to this release, which marks not only a celebration of his history, but also the beginning of a new phase, we talked with this true superhero of Metal to talk more about this release, a little of history, plans and much more in a very cool interview with many curiosities and very humorous, another mark of the always friendly and charismatic Snowy! Road to Metal: Well, you will release your live DVD/CD in September. Tell us a little more about that, like how was the choice of the set list? After all, are so many albums and bands that you have worked! Must have been very hard!

Snowy Shaw: You’re right that there’s a bottomless treasure coffin of songs to choose from, but that was hardly the tough part. As the slogan on the posters said ”Snowy Shaw plays all his favorite song by all his former bands” I basically just selected the songs I like the most and that I thought would make a great mix for the live shows also depending on what guest stars were featured for the occasion.

That the bulk of the songs was songs I’ve written myself is just a mere coincidence... Naw, naturally one tend to like the songs you’ve created yourself, otherwise you’re definitely doing something wrong.

The biggest problem picking the songs was actually all the great ones I had to exclude because you simply can’t play a 5 hour show. Nothing stops me from including them in future shows though.

RtM: And the really hard part?

Snowy Shaw: The hard part, and then we’re talking the kind that would kill off most people, had very little to do with the music itself but by organizing and co-ordinating the event with everything from the filming, recordings, gathering the right crew, flying in guest stars, stage production and props, designing and building, merchandize, promotion and the list goes on and on, and since I’m basically doing it all myself it’s an almost inhumane workload. By the time of the actual show I’m a worn out zombie, but that most people don’t realize of course. Put on a big smile and just go for it, The Shaw must go on.

RtM: And are so many different bands, this DVD will also show all your versatility, you have worked with bands like King Diamond and Merciful Fate, Dream Evil, Therion, Notre Dame, among others! I believe you also had to think well about the musicians who would accompany you in this live show.

Snowy Shaw: Absolutely, this sure is no easy task, and far from all musicians are that broad, versatile and capable as to pull off every style of playing convincingly.

Undoubtedly my band features some of the best musicians in the world, second to none. For these two shows that I’ve recorded and filmed for the DVD/CD package it’s a complete different line up from the first to the second.

Not so much by choice as by pure coincidence and in the future it might be a mix of both depending on the circumstances and who’s available when it comes to touring and playing shows.

I can be seen as quite a demanding leader but in truth, I’m about ten times more demanding on myself.

RtM: How about choosing the right place to recording this CD/DVD? In addition, of course, the production stage and everywhere image and sound, are many details that involve recording a show, also tell us a little more about the production!

Snowy Shaw: Unfortunately Madison Square Garden in New York City was already booked on the dates I had in mind... No! just kiddin‘ obviously (He he he). I picked for the first show my hometown Gothenburg, a.k.a Metal Town. Not only out of convenience and logistical reasons, but because, believe it or not I rarely play in my hometown or in Sweden at all.

I did however change venue a few times based on the increase of ticket presale but also because one venue would better suit the kind of stage production I intended to build and also for the purpose that it’d be better from a filming point of view.

RtM: And maybe will we find some surprises and some special extra content on DVD?

Snowy Shaw: Yeah, apart from the actual stage shows there are some bonus stuff like behind the scenes, interviews and stuff.

RtM: On 22 July you released the single "Dusk". Would you also talk a bit about this single? 

As for the single Dusk, I was very pleased to see it went straight to number one on iTunes rock charts. I’ve never paid any attention to that kind of stuff in the past, but I thought this song deserved a second chance as it had real good potential, and as it turns out I was right. It’s taken from the upcoming live DVD/CD and what not everybody knows is that it’s a Notre Dame song that was originally released on an album I released in ´99.

Single "Dusk": Get Number One on Itunes!!

RtM: And maybe it's coming around a solo album?

Snowy Shaw: Of course, but not just one. This DVD/CD package suitably titled The Liveshow: 25 years of madness in the name of metal could be viewed as a summation of my past but also function as the kick off for the next 25 as a solo artist.

RtM: A lot of work with the DVD, and many more to come!

Snowy Shaw: The whole process of making and finalizing this DVD/CD package have been such a drawn out process, not to say hellride but I wanted it to be as good as it could possibly be so I’ve spent countless hours working on it, editing the film files, mixing the music etc. And then forming my own record and production company wasn’t anything I had calculated with, but a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do.

This however meant that that my original plan of recording my new music had to be put on the back burner in the meantime. I can’t wait to get it going.

Yeah, I almost forgot to mention, a little something came up in between like a full year of touring the world with Sabaton, which was a far too good opportunity to turn down and I wouldn’t change it for the world.

RtM: Talking about Sabaton, how was the work with the band?

Snowy Shaw: I can honestly say that I’ve never worked with a more well organized and nice bunch of people than with the guys in Sabaton and crew. Not saying all the other band weren’t great too, but with Sabaton I actually cursed myself for having so much ambition that I need to do my own thing. Otherwise I could just tag along and have the best job in the world with the nicest people ever. 

But, once again, you know what they say, A man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do....

RtM: And about the invitation to record the vocals on the album by the band Mad Architect?

Snowy Shaw: Glad to hear you like the Mad Architect stuff. I gotta say that it turned much better than I first expected. The bulk of the material I recorded while on tour with Sabaton, whenever I found a little gap in time to do some vocals in our very hectic schedule. 

The leader Magnus Daun is a really nice guy and it was very easy to work with him. They’re based in my hometown Gothenburg but I actually didn’t meet the guy until last month for the first time. We’re planning on doing a new album later this year whenever time allows and I find the time. Looking forward to that.

RtM: Certainly a great moment of you career was the entry in the King Diamond band, and then also in Mercyful Fate. How did it feel to be part of this true legend, and how was working beside King Diamond?

Snowy Shaw: I’m eternally grateful for the opportunity I had to join King Diamond right at the height of his career in 1989. It was great working with King & Co, but in the fall of 1994 I decided to leave and focus all my energy on my band illwill that I had huge expectations for.

RtM: About Mercyful, tell us a little about your participation in the albums "in the shadows" and "Time". Did you participated in the songwriting?

Snowy Shaw: Apart from coming up with the drum arrangements and collaborating with King to meet his wishes, I wasn’t involved in any of the compositions with Mercyful Fate. And that’s part of the reason I left since I wasn’t allowed to contribute creatively in any way. I certainly have no problem understanding their viewpoint on the matter since I’m pretty much the same myself. For most musicians/instrumentalists this works perfectly fine, but in the long run for me, it doesn’t.

RtM: And your autobiography? And I read somewhere that you would be writing, and intended to release it in the near future. How is the progress of this project? You certainly have a lot to tell with all these years of career, and having worked with so many people and bands.

Snowy Shaw: Yeah, I guess that info leaked out somehow. yeah, my life’s been one helluva journey of constant ups and downs and I surely got a lot of stories to tell.

Truth is I’ve been so extremely busy with other stuff that I haven’t had any time to write much at all this year. But I’m in no hurry, as so many exciting things happen all the time.

RtM: I believe that Notre Dame is the band that you have a special affection and dedication, and see it as a job that says a lot about your musical direction. I am sure? 

Snowy Shaw: Notre Dame was very much an extension of my vivid imagination, and you could say that I stir down all sorts of things that has always fascinated and inspired me into this witches cauldron and it made for quite a tasty bitches brew.

RtM: A curiosity I have is about what I read once, that one of the members of Notre Dame was a fictional character, is it true?

Snowy Shaw: They were all fictious characters and I’m a superhero... if I may phrase it a little vague and cryptic. More on that in my book later on...

RtM: Speaking of "characters", reminded his countrymen of the Ghost, which is something that your creative mind conceive, even until there were comments that you could join the group, and you played with it in some interviews. But...who knows..heheeh. 
Snowy Shaw: Hehehe, thanx you! Been some rumours circulating that I was the drummer... 

RtM:You also intends to release other albums with Notre Dame?

Snowy Shaw: I won’t make anymore Notre Dame albums as I will now focus on my solo thingy. It has many of the elements same as Notre Dame although with a little different direction. It also has the same line up as Notre Dame.... go figure! hehehe

RtM: And about which themes do you like to write, what inspires you? I think you quite like the Fiction and horror movies, and comic books as well, because the aesthetics of some covers, t-shirts and other stuffs of your work.

Snowy Shaw: Well, that’s a good assumption, although it’s quite hard to miss my penchant for classic horror aesthetics and stuff. I don’t know what inspires me, creativity is my true passion and it’s a self serving thing I guess. My biggest passion in life is to write songs, to be creative and come up with concepts and all sorts of stuff visually and musically and beyond. Unfortunately I have so much other shit to take care of running the business and all the administration and organization that I consider it a true blessing whenever I find a little time to actually put off time to actually play or work on the music.

And having worked with so many people, you would choose which bands or people you feel most comfortable working, and if you could cite a moment you considers one of the most important of your career, and which would also have been your biggest disappointment?

With the exception of Sabaton perhaps, I’ve never had so much fun working with another band like with Dream Evil.

It’s no big secret that things turned very ugly, very quickly with Dimmu Borgir, sadly. Usually when my expectations are set too high I end up the most disappointed, as was the case with Dimmu, Illwill, XXX and few others.

RtM: I also remembered the "Dimmu Borgir" episode, and the news that you have been officially announced as a band member in a day,  but left the band the next day, returning to Therion.

Snowy Shaw: Well, there’s obviously a lot more to it than that. You don’t seriously think I could have managed to record both bass and vocals, shoot two videos, photo shoots and rehearsals and that in 5-6 different cities/countries all in one day?

It was closer to 7 months I think, but without going into details all I can say at this point is that there was a lot of turmoil and shit going on with their manager, so in the end I got so fed up with the whole thing that I quit and went back to my family in Therion.

RtM: I believe that working with Therion and Christofer Johnsson, is also something that satisfies you much, and fans are also sure it's a great fusion. Would you comment a little bit about your relationship with Therion, how the invitation to join the line-up emerged, and what points attracted more you to work with the band?

Snowy Shaw: I really enjoyed working with Therion. For the first few years it was flat out fantastic and I loved it, especially the Gothic Kabbalah world tour of 2007. I have great respect for Christofer as a band leader and businessman and for what he has accomplished with his band for close to 30 years now. Very impressive. We’re still very good friends, Therion is like a family.

Rtm: I was watching the recent Therion DVD, "Adulruna Rediviva".
Snowy Shaw: Great! I cannot watch yet! (he he he)

RtM: And will you be involved in the next Therion album and upcoming tour?

Snowy Shaw: I don’t think so, from now on I will focus 200% on my own stuff, and that’s why I’ve quit all other bands, although I may do the occasional studio project thing like Opera Diabolicus and Mad Architect.

RtM: You sing, plays several instruments, compose, and even transits between many styles! Tell us a little more of this versatility. Tell us a little when you started your career as a musician, who influenced you in the beginning?

Snowy Shaw: Hmm, long story but let me see. I first got into KISS when I discovered the album Destroyer at the age of 7 and it was one of those Wow experiences and before/after moments as it changed my life forever. I casually listened to Purple, Sweet and Nazareth before that but with KISS was something completely different altogether. The music itself was just a part of a much bigger picture although on this particular album the phenomenal production by super genius Bob Ezrin was nothing short of a true masterpiece, it was the whole larger the life image that really applied to a kid who was crazy about horror and superhero comics. 

I didn’t start playing myself until about 5 years later when I more or less forced some class mates to form a rock band and none of us could play or had barely even seen an electric guitar other than inpictures at that point. For some reason I chose drums, probably because of Peter Criss of KISS although at that point in 1980-81 I had since long given up on KISS and was more into AC/DC and the new wave of swedish rock bands who sang in our native tongue. Which also offered a template where I could write song lyrics, as I couldn’t speak english.

RtM: In the beginning have you ever thought about learning and playing various instruments?

Snowy Shaw: I soon realized that drums wasn’t the ideal choice of instrument when it came to writing songs, and since I always had more ideas than the people I played with I had to learn a little on guitar or bass just in order to present my song ideas to the other guys and I guess gradually I got a little better at it.

RtM: And when you started to sing?
Snowy Shaw: The singing didn’t occur to me until much much later, but pretty much for the same reason, out of necessity. All of the bands I formed with great ideas and concepts in mind would all soon start deteriorate because it seemed totally impossible to find a good singer and therefore we couldn’t move on to the next step and play shows or record anything, which was extremely frustrating for me. From various aspects it’s just not the most logical combination with a singer/drummer so it never even crossed my mind until I was in my mid 20s or so that I could give it a try.

Snowy Shaw: DVD/CD Ao Vivo Resumindo 25 Anos de Metal

Com uma vasta e prolífica carreira, o sueco Snowy Shaw pode ser apontado como uma das figuras mais interessantes, versáteis e criativas no meio metálico, estando sempre envolvido em diversos projetos e bandas, seja atuando como baterista, instrumento o qual iniciou sua carreira (ganhando destaque ao entrar na banda de King Diamond e também no Mercyful Fate em meados dos anos 90), guitarrista, tecladista, vocalista, produtor, coach, fotógrafo, designer...ufa!!!Praticamente um "super-herói"!
