Parte de um
pacote de lançamentos que o M:pire of Evil fechou para lançamento no Brasil com
a Shinigami Records, “Live – Forum Fest VI – Laudun Pardoise”, gravado em
terras francesas, que inclusive recebeu uma nova masterização especialmente para o
lançamento na América do Sul, num registro ao vivo “de verdade”, segundo a
banda, sem “overdubs”, e realmente, o álbum tem uma sonoridade bem crua, mas de
boa qualidade, transmitindo ao ouvinte a pegada da dupla Mantas e Tony “The Demolition
Man”, aqui acompanhados pelo baterista JXN.
Oara mim, a
grande qualidade do álbum está nessa crueza e fidelidade que transmite,
trazendo o clima dos shows dos ingleses ao ouvinte que ainda não teve a chance
de vê-los no palco, e ainda serve de registro aos fãs que já testemunharam a
energia do M:Pire of Evil ao vivo, e certamente vão querer ter esse play em
casa pra reviver um pouco da gana e da tempestade sonora do grupo.
As oito faixas
captaram essa energia do trio, em músicas pesadas, aquele Thrash por vezes
sujo, mas também mostrando técnica, alternando temas velozes e outros mais
cadenciados. Podemos sentir na cara os riffs de Mantas, sem dúvida um dos
pilares do Venom, grupo considerado clássico e criador do Black Metal, e que,
em minha opinião, sem ele e seus riffs o Venom nunca mais foi o mesmo, a voz
forte e agressiva e a pegada do baixo pesado e bem executado de Tony Dolan, o
Demolition Man, que também fez parte do grupo inglês, chegando a lançar 3
álbuns, destacando “Prime Evil” (que inclusive seria o primeiro nome que
escolheram para batizar sua atual banda, tendo que trocar por existir outra
banda de mesmo nome), e ainda a pegada certeira de JNX, que sabe tocar de forma
agressiva, mas também mostra técnica.
Tony e Mantas: Dupla demolidora!
Com músicos
que que já possuíam qualidade, e seguiram evoluindo dentro de sua proposta, o
M:Pire of Evil é, em minha opinião, uma banda superior e muito mais empolgante
e interessante que o Venom, não precisando viver de promoção aproveitando-se da
relação que possuem com os ditos “pais do Black Metal” (apesar de alguns
promotores sempre tentarem ressaltar esse ponto), e vejo que eles realmente
procuram fazer sua própria história, e vêm crescendo bastante, e além de
estarem fazendo algo bem mais interessante que sua ex-banda, também possuem um
carisma e empatia superiores.
Ótima pedida
para quem gosta de sentir a pegada de um show ao vivo, indicado a fãs do grupo
e recomendado também para quem ainda não conferiu o som do M:Pire of Evil.

O tornado inglês M:Pire of Evil foi formado em 2010 por dois músicos que possuem uma longa estrada na música, mais precisamente no Metal, Jeff Dunn (mais conhecido como Mantas), membro formador do Venom, e Tony "The Demolition Man" Dolan, membro formador do Atomkraft, e também tendo passagem em um reformulado Venom, ao lado Mantas e Abaddon, lançando juntos "Prime Evil" (1989), aclamado pela mídia especializada, porém com relutância de fãs devido a ausência de Cronos. Tony e Abaddon, mesmo após a saída de Mantas, lançaram mais dois álbuns, não muito aceitos por crítica e fãs, resultando na dissolução do Venom em 1993 (em 1995 houve o retorno da formação dita clássica).
A dupla voltou a trabalhar junto em projeto de Mantas, que também chegou a ter Antton (baterista do Venom entre 2000-2009), e logo em seguida o trio voltou a se encontrar, na ideia de formar uma nova banda, forjando um som poderoso. A nova banda inicialmente se chamaria "Prime Evil", mas como já haviam bandas com o mesmo nome, usando um jogo de palavras com o nome primeiramente escolhido, batizaram o grupo deM:Pire of Evil. Antton deixou a banda, que passou a trabalhar como dupla, tendo bateristas convidados, e vem crescendo em popularidade entre os fãs, ocupando seu espaço na cena, simplesmente fazendo o que sabem, e erguendo a bandeira de uma cena sem divisões, pois o Metal é um só.
Conversamos com Tony "The Demolition Man" Dolan para falar um pouco mais da banda, dos planos, da indústria musical, do Atomkraft, do Venom, cinema (Tony trabalhou como ator), e muito mais, numa entrevista muito interessante, pois Tony e Mantas tem muita bagagem, mas não pensam em se acomodar nem um pouco! Com a palavra, "The Demolition Man":
RtM: Tony bem vindo ao Road to Metal, particularmente é mais do que uma
honra realizarmos esta entrevista com você. TD: Bem, é um
privilégio para mim também lhes responder. Muito obrigado.
RtM: Para começarmos nossa conversa, Como se deu seu início na música? Qual
foi a primeira banda que você ouviu, ou melhor, quais seriam as bandas que
fizeram você sentir que o heavy metal estaria em sua vida para sempre? TD: Hahaha....
Eu estou um pouco velho agora.... Então as primeiras músicas que eu ouvi eram
coisas provenientes da década de '50 , principalmente o que meus pais ouviam.
Coisas como Elvis, Buddy Holly, Bil Haley Little Richard ... etc..Mas como eu era uma criança dos anos 60 eu estava "por dentro" do The Mersey beat
e, claro, os The Rolling Stones e é assim
que eu cresci. Na minha juventude, na década de 70 e realmente ainda estava tomando conhecimento sobre a música como um todo, ai foram bandas como The
Sweet, a banda Slade no seu início, Queen, Marc Bolan (T Rex) e quando eu emigrei para o Canadá, fui lá apresentado a Ted Nugent, Aerosmith,
Kiss, Foreigner e similares .

Kiss naquela época então, era um choque, mas não foi tanto quanto como quando testemunhei o Motörhead, depois de voltar para a
Inglaterra no final dos anos 70, quando eu estava totalmente inserido no Punk
Rock ... Angelic Upstarts The Dickies, The Ruts, o UK Subs e toda aquela cena,
foi quando soube que independente do que eu fizesse com a minha vida, eu
queria fazer música assim ... tão pesada e tão "Metal" quanto
pudesse ..
RtM: No começo você tinha esperança que algum um dia teria seu nome
reconhecido mundialmente, como atualmente você de fato é? TD: Quando eu
comecei a fazer isso, eu só queria estar em uma banda e nunca considerei
realmente o futuro, e o que iria acontecer. Quer dizer lançando álbuns pelo mundo, ou ser reconhecido fazendo filmes ou qualquer dessas coisas. Eu simplesmente
amava o metal e queria tocá-lo para as pessoas. Fazer o primeiro álbum, foram tantos anos após gravar e tocar, mostra que, embora fosse um sentimento ótimo eventualmente lançar um álbum, eu me apressei muito com isso, e aprendi em como não fazer. E como ele não saiu até 1985, eu pensava em bandas próximas que tiveram a sorte de gravar álbuns bem antes de termos "Future Warriors" lançado, e ele simplesmente não era material forte suficiente para comparar com álbuns mais desenvolvidos em 1985. Nós somente estávamos no "timing" errado. Penso agora como fui feliz em realmente estar falando para os fãs que foram afetados pela música que eu fiz, é ... incrível... e algo que eu sou grato por cada dia. Mas havia uma visão para o sucesso ou eu vi um futuro naquela época? Não, apenas aproveitamos cada minuto que se seguiu.
RtM: Como é ser um dos fundadores do "Atomkraft"? Eu lhe
pergunto isso porque entre meus álbuns favoritos está "Future
Warriors" - Atomkraft "1985 . Você poderia nos contar um pouco mais
sobre como surgiu a banda e as expectativas que você tinha no início? TD: Quando
começamos a banda, eu estava inserido no Punk e o baterista Paul era o
metalhead. Depois que eu descobri o Motörhead foi ai que tudo mudou para mim.
Eu mudei o nome para Atomkraft porque houve um enorme reboliço sobre a energia
nuclear na época, e a ameaça da guerra fria e das armas nucleares estavam
sempre presente. Eu sempre fui fã do idioma alemão e forma de ser deles, assim ao invés de nos chamar de "Nuclear Power" optei por Atomkraft... Eu curto Atomkraft, é o mesmo significado, mas soou
melhor para mim.
Nós não tínhamos expectativas, tanto quanto me recordo era
apenas sobre fazer um álbum com nossas músicas e sair tocando para toda e
qualquer pessoa. O primeiro show ocorreu semanas depois que o álbum saiu, em
Londres, no Marquee com o Slayer, em seguida, não muito tempo depois saímos em turnê com o Venom e o Exodus, mesmo assim, continuava não considerando o que éramos ou iria acontecer ..apenas
assumimos que queríamos fazer mais shows, e em seguida, fazer outro álbum..como
toda banda faz, pensávamos!
RtM: Ainda sobre o Atomkraft, você tem planos para lançar novos álbuns? TD: Sim, este
ano ... Eu tenho tentado isso desde 2004, mas ficava um pouco distante e
então tinha perdido todo o interesse ou a direção por completo. De alguma maneira, eu estava meio perdido. Eu tinha
algumas boas canções e ainda tinha os outros caras escrevendo o material para
eu ver, mas no final eu tinha que examinar como o Atomkraft supostamente deveria soar como
quem éramos originalmente e quem o Atomkraft deveria ser.
Então eu tive uma
epifânia e nos ouvi ... quero dizer, Atomkraft em um show chamado
Brofest em 2014, onde eu tinha sido convidado para tocar todo o "Future Warriors". Foi tão divertido tocar com Krean Meier (Sacrificial) na guitarra e Paul
Caffrey (Gamma bomb) na bateria e eu ainda tive Mantas para tocar conosco "Heat
and Pain" e "Pour The Metal In"... mas eu percebi durante o show que éramos, não como um
Testament ou Exodus, mas mais para um Motorhead e Judas Priest, se é que você me entende, mais fora do que dentro do mesmo saco que os demais. Bom, agora eu tenho quase completo o track list para o novo álbum, e é mais...direto, seguindo como o "Future Warriors" e agora eu ouço e é 100% Atomkraft.
RTM: Fora do palco, você é um ator. Você acredita que a música nos
conecta com outras formas de expressão artística? Que filme você gostaria de
participar? TD: Eu atuava sim. O filme que eu mais gostei, e também foi o maior que participei, foi "Master and Commander-Far Side Of
The World" (Mestre dos Mares), com Russell Crowe e Paul Bettany, porque filmamos por 5 meses em Baja, no México no alvorecer..E isso para um
inglês foi algo como :"- Porra, que demais! Sem chuvas!!!".
Existe gente atuando na música?? hahaha oh sim ... nem sempre ... mas alguns
dos maiores atores criaram o que você leu ou viu no palco e eles fazem de
tudo para fazer você acreditar que eles são o que você quer que eles sejam ...
enquanto entretanto eles são, na realidade, muito longe daquilo ali..E isso é
uma espécie de intercâmbio e entendimento entre os "atores" e os fãs
na maior parte do tempo ... e é isso
acontece ... Isso começa a ir para a direção errada quando o "artista" começa a
acreditar em seu desempenho como um personagem ... e
pensa que ele é realmente aquilo, ou quando os fãs
reconhecem a "farsa', então eles perdem a fé tanto no artista como na
música que vem desse artista. A chave? Não interessa o tipo de talento ... faça música verdadeira, que venha da alma ... dê significado às palavras ... Nunca faça nada
falso porque os fãs não são estúpidos, e eles vão saber.
Tony, em "Mestre dos Mares"
RtM: Como você vê a indústria do cinema hoje? Este "leva" de
remakes que estamos tendo é positivo ou negativo? Existe um diretor que você
quer trabalhar? TD: Eu
adoraria trabalhar com Ridley Scott. E eu quase o fiz, mas cai no último teste
e foi chato pra caralho, mas um dia eu vou trabalhar com ele. Os remakes? Bem,
eu gostei de "Judge Dredd", eu estava no primeiro, o do Stallone, dirigido por Danny Cannon, mas não foi muito bem feito, bem, de qualquer maneira eu gostei do filme, mas o remake foi melhor. Eu acabei de ver o remake de "Robocop" e realmente gostei, melhor do que o original. "O Planeta dos Macacos" foi
algo realmente grande, e ao meu ver os remakes são incríveis em comparação com os
antigos , então eu acho que alguns remakes são bons e bem loucos, como "King Kong" por exemplo, simplesmente
porque somos capazes de criar mais nas telas agora.
Mas alguns não deveriam
ter sido feitos...não houve razão..E não
vou citar os dois que estão na minha cabeça agora, porque eu tenho amigos que estão neles, mas ao meu ver..são inúteis e não
adicionaram nada mais do que os filmes originais já tinham feito, tanto
quanto na história ou o efeito e
contexto em que a história se passava. A indústriatambém mudou por causa do Netflix e afins, mas existem alguns atores incríveis emergentes e alguns
filmes magníficos também ... Acho que estamos em uma época de criatividade
"final" agora.
RtM: Agora,
de volta à música. O selo brasileiro Shinigami vai lançar no Brasil. o álbum
"Live" e "Manitou" M: PIRE OF EVIL, ( uma boa notícia para
os fãs, aliás) . O contrato inclui a distribuição de álbuns futuros também? TD: Sim, é a
melhor notícia e agradecemos Tommy Moriello por ajudar a negociar isto para
nós. Willian e à todos da gravadora. Nós remasterizamos todo o material
especialmente para a América do Sul, mas o principal era obter um produto direto para o Brasil e nossos fãs
brasileiros. O acordo vai incluir o novo álbum e ele também será lançado pela Shinigami, e estamos
muito satisfeitos com isso também.
RtM: Como você vê os resultados da banda desde a sua fundação até
agora? Como
você se sente em relação à aceitação dos fãs, incluindo aqueles que já
conheciam o seu trabalho e o trabalho de
Mantas em suas bandas anteriores ? TD: Na medida
em que os fãs foram vindo, fomos recebidos de maneira incrivelmente
respeitosa e honrosa com a M: PIRE OF EVIL, e é assim como eles estão agindo conosco. Dedicados e leais, alguns nos
acompanham desde de nossas velhas bandas, Atomkraft e Venom, e alguns são novos. A cada semana descobrimos
novos fãs e eles nos descobrem, e isto é ótimo, e agradecemos a eles do fundo do nosso coração!
RtM: Os resultados estão andando do jeito que você imaginou e projetou? TD: Se os resultados são como planejamos? Ou o projeto seguiu como imaginávamos?? hahaha! Não. Nós decidimos agora não ter um 3ª membro fixo, apenas Mantas e eu fazemos todos os negócios, os projetos, música e produção. Mais fácil para manter tudo simples e especialmente emocionante, e assim como pudemos ter esse baterista incrível para os shows, e também tivemos vários baterista incríveis ao nosso lado no estúdio. Isso é algo que quando começamos o M: PIRE nós não prevemos o que aconteceria, mas o mundo gira e caminhos mudam. Estamos felizes com a forma como as coisas estão indo? Sim, sem um grande selo por trás de nós, ou qualquer apoio financeiro, temos andando em todo o mundo e "pescado" grandes coisas já, então as coisas seguem. Temos a intenção de tomar a coroa !! hahaha
RtM: E sobre os temas das letras e a o som da M Pire OF EVIL? Quais são
as principais características de tudo o que
a banda compõe e as diferenças em relação ás suas bandas anteriores?
(Elaboramos esta questão para a apresentação da banda para novos fãs, e também
para os fãs das bandas que fizeram parte, perceberem que a M: Pire of Evil é
uma banda que é plenamente capaz de fazer suas próprias histórias, sem se
agarrar ao passado.) TD: É meio
difícil de não ter partes soando um pouco a lá Atomkraft ou um pouco a lá Venom
na nossa música ... depois de tudo, afinal Mantas escreveu quase que tudo dos 2 primeiros álbuns do Venom, "Welcome to Hell" e
"Black Metal", e nós escrevemos juntos ""Prime Evil"
,"Temples of Ice " e "The Wastelands" no Venom também, então, seria difícil não ser nós
mesmos e escrever algo na linha do que fizemos no passado, mas vemos o M:
PIRE OF EVIL um pouco "dark" como o Venom, mas mais como uma voz sobre a humanidade, como o Atomkraft ... com uma pitada de puro Heavy Metal clássico jogado dentro
desse caldeirão e você tem o M: PIRE de EVIL.
Nos
comentamos sobre a fé religiosa, guerra, política, interação humana e
propaganda..Basicamente emitimos nosso parecer sobre o que todo mundo pensa,
mas passamos para a música. Assim como como falamos para os nossos fãs e sublinhamos
aqui o pensamento de que o Metal não
deve ser dividido em tantas facções.Estilos serão sempre estilos, mas
eles são UM e todos se reúnem sob um único título: METAL. Se tivéssemos um mantra para usar no M: PIRE OF EVIL seria:"M: PIRE OF METAL..ONE BIG WORLDWIDE ARMY OF METALHEADS ("M:PIRE" DO METAL, UM GRANDE EXÉRCITO MUNDIAL
DE METALHEADS.)
RtM: Sobre o tempo no VENOM. Quais eram
são os principais pontos fortes e bons tempos que você destacaria? TD: Fazer o primeiro álbum, "Prime Evil". Foi algo novo, e Mantas,
Abaddon e eu estávamos pegando fogo ... e grandes amigos, então foi um grande período. Gravamos no estúdio de Brian Johnson (AC/DC) em Newcastle e finalizado no sul da Inglaterra
em um estúdio residencial, aparentemente uma semana antes do baterista do Def Leppard perder o braço. Então viemos atrapalhar com o nosso caos e som ... ah grandes dias. Sólidos? Sólido
como banda, poderosa com nós 3 ... menos
irregular do que antes e mais focada.
RtM: E quanto os negativos? E que as razões principais causaram sua
saída? Você pode voltar a trabalhar com o
Venom? TD: Negativos
foram decisões que tomamos, todas más...bem nem todas mas..nós perdemos
o nosso caminho, eu acho. Perdemos oportunidades e não aproveitamos o potencial
dos nossos companheiros de banda. Era o fim do contrato com a Music For Nations
depois que o álbum "The Wastelands" foi lançado e eu já tinha me mudado para Londres,
enquanto Mantas e Abaddon subiram para Newcastle ... então eu decidi como eu
tinha um grande trabalho em Londres e tinha tipo perdido o interesse na forma
como estávamos trabalhando, então eu
pensei que eu tinha cumprido minha missão e pararia por ali..Então foi o que eu
fiz. Posso voltar? Hahaha ... com certeza ... porque não? E tenho tocado com Mantas por
tantos anos, então estamos mais próximos disso possível, e se nós adicionarmos Abaddon, seríamos a mesma banda que éramos na época do álbum "Prime Evil"
RtM: E como você vê o
Venom hoje, em comparação com o início da banda ? A banda teve uma importância
histórica, e apesar das limitações técnicas, acabou chamando a atenção
por tentar algo novo, também utilizando-se um bom apelo visual, a conotação
"Satânica", que despertou a curiosidade, o título "Black
Metal". A banda, por um momento, só pensou em negócios ? TD: Eu não
acho que naquela época eles só pensavam nos negócios, eles só queriam ser
diferentes, e é o que eles escolheram a
partir de shows no estilo Kiss, até a imagem satânica, meio Sabbath, mas mais Black Widow .. e o título
do álbum, "Black Metal", para mantê-los apartados do Heavy Metal . Eles
colocaram tudo isso junto e isso foi o
Venom ... diferente ... e precisamos do Venom neste mundo, perfeito é legal, mas o feio faz você pensar e se sentir vivo ((Nota pessoal da redatora Fernanda: Com certeza, está "sacramentada" a necessidade da banda no mundo).
Agora? Não há comparação, mas como poderia haver? Muita coisa
aconteceu, e olhando pra trás, aquilo era real ... agora, às vezes não é a mesma coisa mais, bem o "Venom" propriamente dito, eu acho, mas isso é
só uma opinião minha como um fã do velho material.
RtM: Coincidência que você está trabalhando agora com o "Cronos Entertainment", hehe! Deixando a diversão de lado com a coincidência do nome da produtora, tenho certeza que ele vai trazer bons resultados, com a possibilidade de mais shows da banda na América do Sul, certo? TD: Sim, hahaha! Gostei! Ele é um grande agente..Nosso agente principal é o Rodrigo Scelza e gostei do que a Cronos Produções estava fazendo, então eu quis os dois conosco, e ambos são fantásticos, e vão trabalhar em uma grande turnê sul-americana para novembro/Dezembro de 2015, com algumas belas apresentações no Brasil. Eu amo tanto o Brasil e mal posso esperar. Fiquei muito decepcionado, pois não estivemos aí em 2014, mas... talvez a espera seja melhor ... Eu sei que vocês vão falar que valeu a pena! Eu gostei da ironia do destino com relação ao nome "Cronos Entertainment", legal!
RtM: E sobre o cenário atual? Percebemos que muitas bandas usam (abusam) demais da tecnologia, com seus álbuns soando frios e "perfeitos" demais, e não
são raras as bandas que não conseguem tocar ao vivo o
que você ouve no CD. Eu também percebo que falta sentimento, a paixão de
fazer música, e muitas vezes confundem isso com algo como ser excessivamente
técnico. O que você acha sobre tudo isso? TD: Concordo
100%. Como eu disse Acima..Isso não pode ser falsificado, os fãs não são
estúpidos. Fingir algo que você não é? Sempre falhará no fim..Você está coagindo as pessoas a acreditarem em algo falso. Alguns permanecerão sempre
seus fãs, não importa o quê, não importa o que está sendo feito, mas pelo que
foi feito há muito tempo. Para mim, tem que ser real e com paixão e abraçar a
tecnologia disponível, mas com a certeza de fazer as coisas ainda melhores, mas
agora remover o sentimento e substituir
com perfeição digital??? NãoooooooooooooooooooooooooOOOOOooOOOo porque assim
você "Mata" o sentimento ali mesmo. Em seguida, subir no palco e usar
samplers, triggers e recursos digitais, o que quer que seja? Ou, pior ainda, nem mesmo ser
capaz de reproduzir músicas ao vivo ... não tem como!
Caralho ... Essa não
seria a razão pela qual as bandas ou músicos estão ali?
Então são produtores, não músicos ..Eu conheço alguns músicos fantásticos, e a propósito, usam triggers e etc ... mas eu sei que eles também podem
tocar ... e que eles usam para sons que pretendem atingir ... mas também tenho visto alguns
pessoas que utilizam artifícios para mascarar onde eles são fracos musicalmente..Apenas seja verdadeiro...
RtM: Bem, nós conversamos com você uns dias antes do Zoombie Ritual, e você (como nós)
foi muito decepcionado com os eventos envolvendo todos os cancelamentos naquele Festival aqui no Brasil.
Você pode nos dizer mais a respeito? Os produtores deram alguma explicação para
você? Você foi contactado após o cancelamento? TD: Ah, sim ... E não foi exatamente o
Zoombie Ritual que foi o nosso problema, embora o agente que nos trouxe
ao Brasil pela primeira vez , assumiu para nos trazer de volta e ele vendeu
nosso show ao Zoombie Ritual, e o mesmo disse que não houve comunicação com
eles (com o festival) , é ...era mais sobre o agente mesmo ..Ele nos prometeu 3
semanas de shows, mas não agiu até que fosse tarde demais ... então queria que
eu fizesse shows com o Atomkraft e M: PIRE OF EVIL, mas não conseguiu garantia
qualquer para isso. então por isso mesmo eu fui
atrás apenas das negociações com o
M: PIRE OF EVIL e reduzi as datas de 3 semanas a 1 e, eventualmente, com
apenas quatro datas nós iríamos. Em seguida, com duas semanas ou menos, vi
que ainda não tinha nem mesmo as passagens aéreas, então era claro que não iríamos tocar. Ai eu o pressionei sobre esse ponto e ele confessou que já era
tarde demais e não fazia nenhum sentido.
RtM: Sim, muito decepcionante. TD: Eu comecei 2014
planejando nossa ida ao Brasil no final do ano ... planejando uma tour Sul Americana completa. Tinha feito contatos e tudo mais tínhamos visto para ir em
maio, com a ajuda de Rodrigo Scelza, ao Rio para promoções ... e tudo se desfez
porque o "agente" queria lidar com tudo isso e disse que ele trabalhava sozinho. Bem no final, depois de desperdiçar meu ano à espera de nada, ele estava
trabalhando sozinho ... totalmente sozinho ... sem M: PIRE. Agora temos
novas pessoas que estão no jogo, então isso não irá acontecer novamente!
RtM: Quando você percebeu que alguma coisa estava errada com o
festival??? TD: Quando eu
continuava indagando o agente, pedindo
informação ... e nada veio, ele apenas continuava dizendo que " tudo
estava ok". Ai depois eu percebi que ainda não tínhamos recebido as passagens de avião, então era sinal que nossa tour seria cancelada. Então a partir dai, escrevi no meu facebook
sobre o festival e a organização, porque eu tinha certeza que o promotor viria perguntar pra mim porque eu estava falando mal dele e do festival, então eu
expliquei nossa situação e deixe-o explicar o seu lado da situação. Mas eu estava irritado com toda a tour fracassada...4 datas???
Nada bom ... e então banda após banda foram sendo obrigadas a cancelar a apresentação no ZR, então tive medo que houvesse uma reação em cadeia, tentei avisar o pessoal sobre o ZR, mas acho que eles não queriam ouvir. E isso foi uma grande, grande vergonha porque teria
sido uma incrível relação de bandas...ao menos algumas fantásticas bandas
brasileiras ainda tocaram, então nem
tudo foi perdido.
RtM: Tendo sido parte de bandas de importância relevante, e também tem
vivido com diversas pessoas na cena da música, quais as habilidades e
características você acredita que um líder de uma banda precisa ter? TD: Eu acho
que principalmente acreditar no que você está fazendo, é claro. Acho que você também precisa ter tato (hahaha), para todos que irão amar você, alguns irão te odiar. Eu vi um cara comentar com um fã sobre o nosso show em São Paulo, em 2013, que aliás matador, ele se recusou a sequer olhar para mim no palco ... ele se concentrou em Mantas hahahaah. Cada um tem a sua opinião e
eu respeito, porque eu também tenho a minha, e exijo respeito por
minha opinião também.
Você precisa ser
genuíno e aberto, mas acima de tudo, você precisa respeitar seus fãs, estar
disponível para eles, se que eles querem uma foto, então faça uma foto, se eles querem tudo autografado, então,
arrume tempo e assine tudo para eles...sem fãs não há VOCÊ...não funciona desse jeito...
e que isso deve ser o seu trabalho. Agradecer-lhes, ouvi-los, e dar-lhes o melhor que você
tem para dar. Se você é honesto e real, os fãs, os verdadeiros fãs, vão
respeitar isso e agradecer você por estar lá com eles, e para eles. Esse é o M: PIRE OF EVIL, é como somos.
RtM: Para você Tony, O que o " Metal" significa? TD: O Metal
significa TUDO. É uma maneira de ser, uma vez em sua alma, jamais poderá ser tirado. Os fãs de Metal são os mais fiéis por toda a vida. Isso nunca abandonam você. A música é uma indústria ... as corporações intitulam isso "a indústria da música", o que não deixa de ser verdade, pois os grandes selos tiram todo o seu dinheiro da música, do território onde as bandas estão crescendo, isto é indústria, sim, mas eles vêem música, e são capazes de fazê-la, seja em gravações ou
ao vivo, e eles estão sendo "estrangulados" por pessoas que tentam
fazer apenas negócios. Alguns promotores mesmo, ainda pedem para as bandas pagá-los para poder tocar. Quero dizer...Sério isso?? É isso o que está acontecendo em 2015 ???
RtM: E como você vê essas bandas que só retornam às atividades visando o lado dos negócios? TD: Quanto as bandas
que retornam só para fazer dinheiro, sem tomar conhecimento das "vítimas", pensando que eles são simplesmente fãs e
estão sendo usados somente para ter lucro? Eu não concordo com isso. Toda
banda precisa de dinheiro para sobreviver, mas eles sempre fizeram. Se uma banda não pode ganhar dinheiro, então eles não podem comprar cordas, agendar mais shows, que eles não podem mais ter nada, ou até obter comida Deve
ser uma troca: fãs vão aos shows, compram ingressos e merchan e a banda usa
esse dinheiro para sobreviver e fazer mais. Uma vez que os preços são muito
altos, o merch muito caro ou mesmo promotores pagando pouco ou nada para os
shows , então isso torna-se impossível.
RtM: Finalizando a conversa Tony, obrigado pela sua disponibilidade, e
queremos parabenizá-lo pela atitude que a banda tem com seus fãs, sempre
respondendo os em redes sociais, atendendo todos no final dos shows, sempre
buscando uma proximidade com seu público, e
é o espaço final para que você possa enviar uma mensagem para seus fãs. TD: Obrigado
por essas palavras, elas significam muito para mim e também para Mantas. Eu não
posso fazer tudo o que eu gostaria de fazer, mas tudo o posso fazer, eu faço.

tornado M: Pire of Evil was formed in 2010, by two musicians who already have a
long road in music, specifically in Metal, Jeff Dunn (Mantas), former
member of Venom, and Tony "The Demolition Man" Dolan, former member
of Atomkraft, and also taking passage in a renewed Venom, alongside Mantas and
Abaddon, throwing together "Prime Evil" (1989), acclaimed by the
specialized press, however reluctantly fans due to lack of Cronos. Tony and
Abaddon, even after the departure of Mantas, released two more albums, not very
accepted by critics and fans, resulting in the dissolution of Venom in 1993 (in
1995 there was a return of classical line-up).
Tony and Mantas returned to work together in Mantas project, which also came to have Antton
(Venom drummer from 2000-2009), and soon after the trio returned, became the
idea of forming a new band, forging a powerful sound . The new band initially
be called "Prime Evil", but as had bands with the same name, using
a play on words with the name chosen first, baptizing the group as M: Pire of
Evil. Antton left the band, and now working as a duo, with guest drummers, Tony and Mantas are seeing the group growing in popularity among fans, occupying their space in the Metal scene, simply
doing what they know, and raising the flag of a scene without divisions, as the
Metal is one.
We had talked with Tony "The Demolition Man" Dolan to speak a little more about the band,
the plans, the music industry, Atomkraft, Venom, cinema (Tony worked as an
actor), and more, in a very interesting interview because Tony and Mantas have
a lot of histories, but they want more!
RtM:Tony welcome to Road to Metal, particularly is more than an honor to
have this interview with you. TD: Well it's
also a privilage for me to be asked..so thank you.
RtM: To begin our discussion, How you gave your "start" in music?
What was the first band did you hear,
and what, or which bands mades
you feel that the Heavy Metal music will be in your life forever? TD: Hahaha....I'm
kinda old now...so the first music I heard was things form the 50's mainly my
parents played. Things like Elvis, Buddy Holly, Bil Haley Little
Richard...etc..but as I am a child of the 60's I was aware of the Mersey beat
and of course the Rolling Stones as I grew..by the time I was a young guy in
the 70's and really taking not of music, it was bands like The Sweet Slade
early Queen Marc Bolan (T Rex) and by the time I emigrated toi Canada I was
introduced to Ted Nugent, Aerosmith, Kiss, Foreigner and the like.
Seeing
Kiss back then was a shock but it wasn't until I witnessed Motorhead after
returning to England in the late 70's, where I was totally into Punk
Rock...Angelic Upstarts the Dickies, The Ruts, the UK Subs and that scene, that
I knew whatever else I did with my life...I wanted to do music like
that...Heavy and as Metal as I could..
RtM: In the beginning you had hope someday becomes your name globally
recognized actually you are ? TD: When I
started doing this, I just wanted to be in a band and never really considered
the future and what would happen. I mean..globally doing albums or being
recognized doing movies or any of that stuff. I simply loved metal and wanted
to play it to people. making the first album was so many year after I had been
recording and playing shows that although it was a great feeling to eventually
be releasing an album I rushed it too much and learnt how not to do it...and as
it did not go out until 1985 I thought next to bands who had had the fortune to
be recording albums long before we got Future Warriors released it was just not
strong enough material to compare against more developed albums in 1985. We
just got our timing wrong. To think now how fortunate I was and infact am to be
speaking to fans who were affected by the music I did...is...amazing and
something I am greatful for every day but was there a vision for success or did
I see a future back then? Nope just took it every minute that came along.
RtM: How is be one of the
founders of the "Atomkraft"? I ask you this because among my favorite
albums its "Future Warriors"- ATOMKRAFT " 1985. Could you tell
us a little more how did the band and the expectations that you had at the
beginning? TD: When it
started I was into Punk and the drummer Paul was the metalhead. Once I
discovered Motorhead that all changed for me. I changed the name to Atomkraft
because there was a huge Nuclear Power movement back then and the threat of the
cold war and Nukes ever present. I have always been a fan of the German
language and way of being...so instead of calling us Nuclear Power...I like
Atomkraft which in German means the same but sounded better to me. We had no
expectations as far as I recall it was just about doing an album of our songs
and getting out an playing that to anyone and everyone. The first show was
weeks after the album went out...in London at the Marquee with Slayer then not
long after we went out on tour with Venom and Exodus...even then...we still
never considered what was or would happen..just assumed we would do more shows
then do another album..like every band did..lol..we thought!
RtM: Still about Atomkraft, you have plans to release new albums? TD: Yes this
year...I have been trying since about 2004 but only get so far then have iost
interest or the drive to complete.In a way too I was kind of lost. I had some
good songs and even had other guys write material to look at but in the end I
had to examine what Atomkraft was supposed to sound like who we were originally
and who Atomkraft should be...then I had an epiphany and heard us...I mean
Atomkraft...at a concert called Brofest in 2014 where I had been asked to play
the whole of "Future Warriors". It was such fun with Krean Meier (Sacrificial) on
Guitar and Paul Caffrey (Gamma Bomb) on drums and I even got Mantas up to play
'Heat and Pain' and 'Pour The Metal In' with us...but |I realized during that
show who we were.....not Testament or Exodus but...Motorhead and Judas Priest
kind of if you understand...more off to the side than in the bag with everyone
else..So now I have almost completed the track for the new album and it is
more...straight forward like "Future Warriors" and now...I hear it IS
Atomkraft...%100
Rtm: Offstage, you're an actor. Do you believe that music connects us to
other forms of artistic expression? What movie did you like to participate? TD: I have
done acting yes. The movie that I enjoyed the best as it was also the biggest
was Master and Commander-Far Side Of The World with Russell Crowe and Paul
Bettany..because we shot for 5 months in Baja Mexico in the sunshine..which for
an Englishman was fucking great!!! No Rain!!! Is there acting in music??
hahahha oh yes...not always...but some of the bigger acts...create what you
read or see onstage and they are all out to make you believe they are what you
want them to be...while meanwhile they are in reality far far from that..It is
a kind of exchange and understanding between acts and fans most of the
time...that this is what is happening...where it goes wrong is when the
'artist' begins to believ his performance as the character...and thinks he IS
actually that...or when the fans acknowledege the 'faking fantasy' then they
lose faith in the artist and the music from that artist. The key? Whatever the
showmanship...make the music real from your soul...mean the words...fake
nothing coz fans are not stupid and they will know...

RtM: How do you see the film industry today? This "takes" of
remakes we are having is positive or negative? Is there a director you want to
work? TD: I would
love to work with Ridley Scott. I almost did but fell at the last fence and was
fucking gutted but one day I will. The remakes? Well I like Judge Dredd...I was
in the Stallone one directed by Danny Cannon but if didn't do so well..although
I like dthe movie but the remake was better. I just saw the Robocop remake and
really liked it better than the original. The planet of the Apoes was a big
thing for me growing up but the remakes are incredible compared to the old
ones...so I think some remakes are crazy good...King Kong..simply because we
are able to create more onscreen now..but some...should not have been
done..there was no reason..I won't cite the 2 in my head because i have friends
in them lol but..some are pointless and do nothing more than what the original
movies did as far as story or effect of the story goes. The industry has
changed because of Netflix and the like but there are some incredible actors
emerging and some magnificent films too...I think we are in an age of ultimate
creativity right now.
RtM: Now back to music. The Brazilian Shinigami label will release the
album here "Live" and "Manitou" M: PIRE OF EVIL, good news
for the fans. The contract includes the distribution of future albums too? TD: Yes it is
the best news and we thank Tommy Moriello for helping to negotiate that deal
for us. Willian and all at the label..We re mastered the material especially
for South America..but the main thing was to get product direct to Brazil and
our fans there. The deal will include the new album coming again to Brazil
direct from Shinigami...and we are very pleased about that too.
RtM: How do you see the results of the band since its foundation until
now? The results are walking the way you imagined and projected? How are you
feeling the acceptance of fans, including those who already knew your and
Mantas work in yours previous bands? TD: As far as
fans go we are incredibly respectful and honored the way they have come to
M:PIRE of EVIL and how they are with us. Dedicated and loyal some came with us
from our old bands Atomkraft and Venom and some a brand new. but with each and
every week we discover new fans and they discover us and it is great and we
thank them from the bottom of our hearts! Are the results as we planned? or the
project moving as we imagined?? hahaha No. We have decided now not to have a
3rd permanent member..as Mantas and myself do all the business and the designs
and the music and production. It was simpler to keep it all uncomplicated and especially
exciting as we can use amazxing drummer for live and we have sevreal amazing
drummer for our studio side also. That is something when we began M:PIRE we did
not predict would happen but the world turn and paths change. Are we happy with
how things are going? YES...without a corporate label behind us or any
financial backing...we have been all over the world and achived great things
already...so keep it coming...we intend to take the crown!! hahaha
RtM: What about the sound and the lyrics themes of M: Pire of Evil? What
are the main characteristics of everything that makes up the band and the
differences with respect to your previous bands? We elaborate this issue by and
for the presentation of the band to new fans, and also for the fans of the bands
that you were part, realize that the M: Pire of Evil is a band that is fully
capable of making their own stories, without holding -If the past. TD: It is
kind of hard not to have parts sounding a little Atomkraft or a little Venom in
our music...after all mantas wrote almost all of the first 2 Venom albums
Welcome to Hell and Black Metal and we wrote Prime Evil Temples of Ice and The
Wastelands together...for Venom so..it would be hard to not be ourselves and
wrote the way we have done in the past but we see M:PIRE as a little dark like
Venom but with more of a voice about Humankind like Atomkraft...with a dash of
pure classic Hevay Metal thrown in and you get M:PIRE of EVIL..We comment on
religious faith, war, politics, human interaction and propoganda..basically we
voice opinion that everyone thinks but set it to music..as well as speaking to
our fans and underlining the thought that Metal should not be split into so
many factions. Styles will be styles but they are ONE and all come together
under one the one titled METAL...if we had one mantra for M:PIRE of EVIL it is
that....and M:PIRE of METAL..ONE BIG WORLDWIDE ARMY OF METALHEADS!!
RtM: About the time in VENOM,
which are the main strengths and good times highlight? TD: Doing the
first album Prime Evil. It was fresh and Mantas, Abaddon and I were on
fire...and great friends so it was a great period. We recorded at Brian
Johnsons (AC/DC) studio in Newcastle and finished in the South of England at a
residential studio where apparently the drummer form Def Leppard was the week
before getting one single snare sound, then we come fumbling in with
our chaos and sound...ah great days. Strengths? Solid band, powerful with the 3
of us...less ragged than before and more focused.
RtM: What about the negatives? And that main reasons causing its output?
Can you go back to work with Venom? TD:Negatives
were decisions we made, all bad!!! Well, not all but...we lost our way I
think. We missed opportunities and did not capitalize on others..in the end the
contract with Music For Nations came to an end after The Wastelands album and I
had already relocated to London while Mantas and Abaddon were up in Newcastle...so I decided as I had a
great job in London and had kind of lost interest in the way we were working
that I'd just stop there..So I did. Can I go back? Hahaha...for sure...why
not..playing with Mantas for so many years anyway...we are as close as it
gets...if we added Abaddon...we'd be the same band we were during Prime Evil
anyway.
RtM: And as you see Venom today compared to that of the early band? The
band had a historical importance, despite technical limitations, eventually
drawing attention for trying something new, also using up a good visual appeal,
the connotation "Satanic" which aroused curiosity, the Title
"Black Metal". The band, for a moment, thought only of business? TD:I don't
think back then they only thought business...they just wanted to be
different..and that is what they chose from the oevr the top shows ala Kiss to
the Satanic imagery..almost Sabbath but more Black Widow..and the album title
Black Metal to stand them apart from Heavy Metal..they put it all together and
that was Venom...different...and we need the Venom's in this world. Perfect is
great, but ugly makes you think and feel alive. Now? There is no comparison, but
how could there be? Too much has happened and back then it was
real. Now?Sometimes it's not got the same...well....Venom as it did..I guess, but that's just coming from me as a fan of the old stuff.
RtM: Coincidence that you are now working with the "Cronos Entertainment", hehe! Taking the fun aside with the coincidence of the producer's name, I'm sure it will bring good results, with the possibility of more band concerts in South America, right? TD: Yes hahahaha.. I liked that. He is a great agent..our main agent is Rodrigo Scelza and I liked what C. Entertainment was doing...so wanted them both with us..as they are both fantastic..and will work on a great South American tour for November/December 2015 with some fine shows in Brazil. I love Brazil so much and cannot wait. I was very disappointed we did not get there in 2014 but...maybe the wait is best...I know you will think it was worth it! I did like the irony though of the name 'Cronos Entertainment'.
RtM: What about the current scenario? We realize that many bands use
other technologies, with their albums sounding cold and "perfect"
too, and it is not rare bands who can not live play what you hear on the CD. I
realize also that lack feeling, the passion of making music, which often
confused with some being overly technical. What do you think about it all? TD:I agree
%100. As I said above..it cannot be faked, fans are not stupid. Pretending to
be something you are not? Will always fail in the end..you are conning people
into believing something untrue. Some will alwyas remain fans no matter what,
not for what is being done but for what was done way back when. For me it has
to be real and with passion and embrace the available technology sure to make
things even better, but remove the feeling and replace with digital
perfection??? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooo!!! KILLS it right there. Then get
on stage and use samples, triggers...or mime or whatever..? or even worse, not
even be able to play tracks live...no fucking way...that is not what bands or
musicians are supposed to be is it? That's producers not musicians..I know some
fantastic musicians by the way who use triggers etc...but I know they can also
play...so they use it for sounds they want to achieve...but I have also seen
some people using aids to mask where they fall short sonically too..Just keep
it real...
RtM: Well, we talked to you a few days ago, and you (like us) was very
disappointed with the events involving cancellations in Zoombie Ritual Festival
in Brazil. Can you tell us more about it? The producers gave some explanation
for you, or contacted after the cancellation? TD:Ah
yeah...that was not exaclty Zombie Fest that was our problem although the agent
who brought us to Brazil the first time took over to bring us back and he sold
us to Zombie Ritual and the said there was no communication from them, it was
more about the agent..he promised 3 weeks of shows but did not act until it was
too late...then wanted me to do as Atomkraft and M:PIRE of EVIL but failed to
secure any shows for that. so went back to just M:PIRE of EVIL and reduced the
dates from 3 weeks to 1 and eventually with weeks to go down to only 4
shows!!! Then 2 weeks or so out from coming we still had no flights, so it was
clear we were not going to come to play. I pushed him on that point and he
conceeded it was too late and made no sense..I had started 2014 coming to
Brazil at the end of the year...planned a full South America tour..had contacts
and everything..were to come in May with Rodrigo Scelza's help to Rio for promotions...and
all fell apart because the "Agent" wanted to handle it all and said he worked
alone...well in the end after wasting my year waiting for nothing...he was
working alone...totally alone, without M:PIRE. Now we have new people who are
on the ball, so this wont happen again!
RtM: When did you realize that something was wrong with the festival ??? TD:When I
kept askign the agent for information...and nothing came, he just kept sayign
all is ok. After I realized we were not getting flight tickets so were about to
be cancelled from our tour..I wrote on my facebook about the festival and
organization as I knew someone would come to speak and I was right the ZR
promoter came to me and asked why I was saying bad about him or the festival, I
explained our situtuation and let himtell me his side and we left it at
that...but I was angry about the whole fucked up tour...4 dates??? No
good...and then band after band begand to cancel at ZR so I am afraid there was
a chain reaction...I did try and warn people from ZR but I guess they did not want to listen..It
was a great great shame it would have been an amazing bill..at least some
fantastic Brazilina bands still played so all was not lost.
RtM: Having been part of bands of relevant importance, and has also
lived with diverse people in the music scene, which abilities and
characteristics a leader of a band need to have? TD:I think
belief in what you are doing of course. You need to have think skin..too
hahaha..for all who will love you some will hate you. I had one guy speak to a
fan about our show in Sao Paulo in 2013 which was fucking killer by the way,
say...he refused to even look at ME onstage...he focused on
Mantas...hahaha..each has their opinion and that I respect because I also have
mine and demand respect for my own too. You need to be genuine and open but
above all you need to respect your fans be available to them, of they want a
picture then take one, if they want everything signed then take your time and
sign all for them...without the fans there is no YOU...it cannot work one
way...and that should be your job. To thank them listen to them and give them
the very best you have to give. If you are honest and real the fans, the true
fans will respetc that and thankyou for being there with them and for them.
That is the M:PIRE of EVIL way and how we are.
RtM: For you Tony, What Metal means? And how do you see the bands that
return only the activities aimed at the business side? TD: Metal
means everything. It is a way of being, once in your soul it cannot be taken
away. Metal fans are the most loyal for their whole lives. It never leaves you.
Music is an industry...the corporations titled it, 'the Music Industry' but
while that is true, as the big labels made all their money from music, on the
ground where the bands are growing..it is industrious yes but they do not see
it as an industry, they see music and being able to perform, on recordings or
live and they are being strangled by people trying to make only business. Some
promoters even asking bands to pay them to be able to play. I mean..really?? Is
that what is has come to in 2015??? As for band coming only to make money from
unknowing victims who thought they were simply fans and are being used for
profit only? I do not agree with it. Band need money to survive...but they
always did. If a band cannot make money then they cannot buy strings book shows
that they cannot get to or even eat. It should be an exchange fans go to shows
buy tickets and merch and the band uses that money to survive and do more. Once
prices are too high, merch overpriced or even promoters paying little or
nothing for shows then it becomes impossible.
RtM: Finalizing Tony, thanks for your availability, and we want to
congratulate you for the attitude that the band have with your fans, answering
them on social networks, serving all in the late shows, always seeking a
closeness with their audience, and is the end space for you to send a message
to your fans. TD: Thank you
those words they mean a lot to me and also to Mantas. I cannot do everything I
wish but what I can do, I do. I am open to fans, support the underground and
speak to all who whish to come and speak to me. Take photo's if they want them
sign anything they ask me to sign and meet all I can. I do this because I am
aware that without them, there is no Demolition Man...they are my blood, my air
and I am greatful.
