Nalle Pahlsson (Royal Mess, Therion): "Música é Expressão e Sentimento"

Talvez para alguns o nome NALLE PAHLSSON possa não soar familiar, mas para um fã de Hard Rock e conhecedor da cena suéca, certamente ligará o nome a bandas como Treat, Last Autumn's Dream, Easy Action, Vindictiv, AB/CD (tributo ao AC/DC que obteve reconhecimento expressivo em seu país), e mais recentemente Luciferian Light Orchestra e, claro, THERION, banda que Nalle assumiu o baixo desde 2008.  English Version

Com larga experiência e capacidade que vai além de um excelente baixista, e após tantos serviços prestados em álbuns de dezenas de bandas e artistas, seja como membro oficial, convidado ou músico contratado, em 2011 resolveu trabalhar em seu projeto solo, onde colocaria em prática sua capacidade como compositor, vocalista e multi-instrumentista, com a sonoridade voltada às bandas que lhe inspiraram desde garoto, simplesmente música vinda da alma e do coração, surgindo então o ROYAL MESS, que teve seu lançamento em 2015 pelo selo australiano Melodic Rock .

Conversamos com Nalle para trazer para você um pouco do trabalho deste importante e talentoso músico suéco, onde ele abre seu coração e nos conta sobre seu início na música, a paixão pelo Rock and Roll, um resumo da sua história como músico, os trabalhos que fez parte, a determinação em superar os problemas com o álcool, a entrada no Therion, o Royal Mess e muito mais. Confira e conheça um pouco mais deste verdadeiro Rocker!



RtM: Nalle, as pessoas que seguem o seu trabalho, sabe que você está sempre envolvido em vários projetos, então me diga, você tem alguma idéia de quantos álbuns você gravou, como membro ou convidado?

Nalle: Eu realmente não tenho ideia ........? Eu tenho que verificar isso algum dia .....(risos)

RtM: E como você começou na música? Quem foram as pessoas que o incentivaram no início?

Nalle: Foi meu irmão mais velho, Benny, que era 10 anos mais velho que eu, que me colocou no mundo do  rock. Ele é a base para uma parte muito grande do meu background musical. Ele tinha  álbuns com bandas e artistas legais e eu ouvia muito os discos dele quando eu era um garoto. Ele também tinha uma guitarra que eu aprendi a tocar sozinho.

RtM: E as primeiras bandas que chamaram sua atenção?

Nalle: No início foi Jimi Hendrix e The Rolling Stones. Um pouco mais tarde, descobri Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin e Black Sabbath ...... então The Sweet, KISS, Alice Cooper, Status Quo, David Bowie só para mencionar alguns ...... No final dos anos 70 eu também parti pra coisas mais progressivas, como UK, Genesis, Rush, Kansas, etc ....

RtM: Você é um grande fã e colecionador de Kiss, e logicamente é uma de suas bandas favoritas.

Nalle: Sim, KISS é absolutamente um dos meus grandes favoritos, mas tem, naturalmente, muito a ver com a sua imagem e tudo isso. Eles eram cartoons vivos! Eles eram como Superman ou Spiderman - mas eles eram reais! Eu descobri-os quando eu tinha 11 ou 12 anos de idade. Se você tivesse perguntado a mim ou a qualquer outro garoto naquele momento o que eles queriam ser, eles provavelmente diriam "um Rock Star ou um super-herói" - O KISS era ambos! Eles eram o sonho de um garotinho - e também tinha toda a  mística. Por cerca de uns 10 anos ninguém sabia como eles pareciam ou quem eram!

RtM: Especificamente sobre Kiss, que itens você mais gosta em sua coleção? Você tem alguma idéia de qual seria o item mais raro?

Nalle: Eu diria o meu livro autografado, do concerto de Estocolmo, Suécia 1976!

RtM: O que você achou dos últimos álbuns do Kiss? Como fã você espera que eles lançem material novo ainda? Alguns fãs não gostam de Tommy e Eric usando as máscaras clássicas. E você? É tipo fã radical ou com mente mais aberta? (risos)

Nalle: Eu acho que "Sonic Boom" é um álbum muito bom. "Monster" já não me deixou muito feliz. E eu tenho que ser honesto; mesmo sendo um fã do clássico line-up - A banda soa melhor hoje com Tommy Thayer e Eric Singer. Mas para mim - KISS sempre será  Gene, Paul, Peter & amp; Ace! Mas Tommy Thayer realmente soa mais como Ace Frehley do que Ace Frehley soa como ele mesmo hoje! KISS é mais como um "Espetáculo" que você vai assistir. E para mim está tudo bem! Se Tommy e Eric usam as máscaras dos membros originai? - Que assim seja! Eu não me importo! Façam o show! (Risos)

RtM: Voltando à sua carreira, qual foi sua primeira banda profissional? Lembro-me do AB/CD, uma banda tributo ao AC / DC, que teve um relativo sucesso lá na Suécia.

Nalle: O AB/CD foi formado por mim e alguns amigos de infância no final de 1983, e ainda tocamos de vez em quando. Nós realmente vendemos mais discos do que muitas outras bandas de hard rock do período, início e meados dos anos 90.

RtM: Você também fez e faz parte de bandas tradicionais bem conhecidas como Treat e Vindictiv, conte-nos um pouco sobre sua colaboração nestas duas grandes bandas, especialmente Treat, que é amada por fãs do Hard Rock de todo o mundo.

Nalle: Eu me tornei um profissional como músico freelance e toquei com muitos artistas diferentes, suécos e dinamarqueses, entre 1983-2004 na verdade. Somente em 2005, com o TREAT, que eu realmente me juntei a "uma banda real", e em 2008 eu me juntei ao THERION.

Com o VINDICTIV eu gravei 4 álbuns .... mas eu não sou mais parte da banda.

Eu sou um grande fã de Göran Edman, que cantou nos 2 primeiros álbuns do Vindictiv.

Eu fui um membro do TREAT entre 2005-2012 e, na verdade, o álbum "Coup De Grace" que gravamos é uma grande realização para mim como um baixista. Ainda hoje eu recebo e-mails e as pessoas vem falar comigo e dizem o quanto eles amam esse álbum e que a minha performance nele é muito boa - e isso me faz feliz! :-) Eu realmente gosto desse tipo de Hard melódico.

RtM: A Suécia, por sinal, é reconhecida e respeitada como um grande produtor de excelentes bandas de Metal e Rock, mas principalmente do Hard Rock e Melodic Rock, citado por muitas publicações e jornalistas. Conte-nos um pouco sobre esse "fenômeno", e por que você acha que há tantas grandes bandas do estilo em seu país?

Nalle: Eu realmente não sei ......? Acho que fomos muito influenciados pelo rock britânico e americano e pela música pop nos anos 60, 70 e 80 ... e as pessoas suecas são geralmente muito organizadas e focadas. Suécos também são pessoas, em alguns aspectos, vistos como um pouco chatos e rigorosos... e talvez é assim que é? - mas talvez possamos colocar muito dos nossos sentimentos na música ..... (?) A música é realmente sobre expressar-se. E parece que sabemos como fazê-lo.

RtM: Dos lançamentos recentes, temos o álbum do Last Autumn's Drem, no qual a banda presta homenagem a vários clássicos, como Sweet and Kiss. Conte-nos um pouco mais sobre este lançamento, e como foi a escolha das músicas. Eu apostei que KISS era uma escolha sua!

Nalle: Nós fizemos algumas covers em álbuns anteriores do L.A.D. E nós realmente estávamos pensando em gravar um álbum completo de covers, quando chegou ao ponto de percebermos que teríamos muito pouco tempo para material original desta vez, foi uma boa oportunidade para fazê-lo. E nós realmente temos tido boas reações de todos os lugares até agora! Muitas das canções são tão anônimas que as pessoas no final vão acreditar que estas são nossas próprias músicas (risos) Nós escolhemos as músicas juntos e Jamie me disse para escolher uma canção do KISS. E foi a "All the way" do álbum "Hotter Than Hell"!

RtM: Gathering of Kings é também um novo projeto no qual você está envolvido, e logo será lançado pela Melodic Rock Records. Conte-nos um pouco mais sobre este projeto, que tem muitos grandes músicos. Tenho ótimas expectativas !!

Nalle: Até agora nós só gravamos 2 músicas, mas parece que vamos gravar o resto do álbum em março-abril. Esperemos que seja lançado antes que este ano termine.

RtM: Sobre sua entrada no Therion, conte como foi o convite, e eu acredito que como músico deve ser muito gratificante pra você, porque a banda tem um som muito pessoal e original, e certamente foi e continua a ser um desafio para você como um músico.

Nalle: Thomas Vikström, que era um velho colega meu (agora um amigo querido) recomendou eu e Johan Kullberg quando Petter Karlsson e Johan Niemann sairam. Nós apenas fomos para uma sala de ensaio aqui em Estocolmo e tocamos algumas músicas. Uma deles foi "Blood Kingu" e mais uma que eu não consigo lembrar. Nós apenas tocamos as músicas e então Christofer Johnsson disse: "Soou bem- exatamente como o usual e como deveria ser" (algo assim) - Então, a coisa estava clara. Nos tornamos membros do novo line-up do Therion. Naquela época eu não tinha ideia de que Therion era tão popular na América do Sul e México. Fiquei totalmente chocado quando chegamos ao primeiro show na Cidade do México.

RtM: Eu vejo que você se sente muito bem no Therion, como Christopher sempre diz, é uma família, e ele sempre procurou pessoas que têm um ótimo relacionamento, não apenas internamente, mas também com os fãs.

Nalle: Sim, para mim a música deve ser sobre a amizade e se divertir juntos, e é assim que é no Therion. Nós nos sentimos confortáveis ​​uns com os outros e sentimos um profundo respeito pelos fãs! Sem os fãs você não é nada além de "só mais uma banda" ...

RtM: O Therion está finalizando as gravações de sua Rock Opera, e você também gravou partes das guitarras, e, claro, o baixo. Conte-me um pouco sobre as gravações, como estão suas expectativas em torno deste álbum.

Nalle: Estou realmente muito animado para ouvir o resultado final! Quando eu gravei as guitarras base e baixo não havia muito dos vocais gravados ainda, então eu realmente não sei como vai soar ...... Havia também muitos outros instrumentos faltando. Estou apenas me perguntando sobre ele ser tão longo!! 3,5 horas! Está indo totalmente contra a maré neste mundo "imediatista" que nós estamos vivendo hoje ...... Será que os fãs têm a força e a vontade de realmente entrar nele? Veremos......

RtM: Em 2015 você finalmente, depois de fazer parte de tantas bandas e colaborar com tantas pessoas, lançou seu álbum solo, ROYAL MESS. Conte-nos um pouco como você se sentiu sobre esse passo em sua carreira?

Nalle: Foi algo que eu tive na minha mente por muitos anos e eu senti que tinha que ser feito! E eu estou muito satisfeito com o resultado. Ele contém muito da música com a qual eu cresci, e que ainda hoje está lá no fundo do meu coração e minha alma. No fundo eu sou um cara muito simples que adora música simples e poderosa. Também me senti bem para mostrar às pessoas que eu sou não só um baixista, mas também um guitarrista, cantor, produtor e compositor.

RtM: E como surgiu a ideia ou a necessidade de lançar um solo? Você não sentiu essa necessidade antes?

Nalle: Eu acho que cada músico tem esse sonho. Fazer o seu próprio registro e mostrar aos outros o que você é capaz de fazer e para provar a si mesmo que você pode fazê-lo! É naturalmente também , muito de uma "coisa do ego".

RtM: Você também pode mostrar sua habilidade como vocalista (recebendo muitos elogios por essa experiência), e multi-instrumentista, mostrando muito mais quem é Nalle como músico e compositor, e que sua veia é realmente Hard Rock, como Como Melodic Rock, Sleaze e AOR.

Nalle: Estou muito feliz por ter recebido todas essas boas críticas de todo o mundo. Eu sou tão grato que eu tenha tido tanto feedback de ouvintes e jornalistas! E sim - concordo; Eu me vejo como um verdadeiro Rocker! 

RtM: O fato de conhecer e colaborar com muitos artistas, eu também acredito, tornou possível ter muitos convidados especiais. Conte-nos um pouco sobre como você organizou as gravações e produção do álbum, tendo vários convidados para "distribuir" as músicas.
Nalle: Meu plano era trazer em amigos e colegas do ramo da música, os quais toquei ao vivo ou tinha gravado com eles - ou que eu só tinha alguma relação envolvendo o mundo da música. Eu consegui obter cerca de 25 convidados a bordo! Todo mundo que eu convidei estava disposto a participar! A maioria dos guitarristas gravou seus solos em seus próprios estúdios e depois enviou os arquivos para mim, logo depois que conversamos por telefone. Ainda há muitos amigos que eu quero ter em minhas gravações - então agora estou planejando o sucessor do meu primeiro álbum do Royal Mess!

RtM: Sobre o som, além do Hard Rock que tem essa característica de bandas suecas, eu senti muita influência de Kiss, algo bastante óbvio como sua influência. Eu gostaria que você nos contasse mais sobre suas inspirações na composição do álbum.
Nalle: Eu realmente nunca pensei de onde a inspiração veio para as canções...Eu não acho que você possa ouvir qualquer coisa que seja algum tipo de Rip-Off ou algo parecido ... mas claro, eu fui inspirado por KISS ....... e eu acho que você também pode ouvir algumas influências de AC/DC em "Gold Digger" .... O material que soa um pouco mais americano, eu acho que eu tenho minha inspiração em bandas como Journey, Foreigner e ToTo que eu amo muito.

"Eu decidi começar uma nova vida sem álcool. Fazem cerca de 6 anos que tomei a decisão - e eu me sinto melhor do que nunca!"

RtM: Em algumas letras você se aproximou de seu drama pessoal, que foi a luta contra o álcool, que felizmente você ganhou. Você poderia nos contar um pouco sobre isso, e que conselho ou encorajamento você daria a pessoas ou famílias que sofrem com esse tipo de problema?
Nalle: As pessoas me dizem que eu sou forte por ficar longe do álcool e assim por diante ..... mas eu gostaria de dizer que é mais uma decisão! Eu falhei um par de vezes, mas no final eu admiti que eu realmente tinha um problema com a bebida, e eu decidi começar uma nova vida sem álcool. Fazem cerca de 6 anos que tomei a decisão - e eu me sinto melhor do que nunca! Hoje eu realmente, muitas vezes, me sinto envergonhado de quanto as pessoas suecas são capazes de beber ...... O álcool é como uma religião aqui. Você não pode se divertir, você não pode ser você mesmo, você não pode ter um momento de lazer sem beber - e está sendo anunciado no Facebook o tempo todo. Beber álcool é o destaque da semana - ficar bêbado, sentir-se livre e feliz - Vamos lá! Seja você mesmo - tome uma bebida! Eu sei tudo isso - Porque eu já fui assim! Hoje eu sei melhor! Na verdade, somos muitos músicos aqui na Suécia que deixaram totalmente de beber.

RtM: Falando sobre algumas das canções, "Aces High" é uma grande abertura, referindo-se ao Hard Rock dos anos 80.
Nalle: Bom, para esta eu só tinha a música e o título. O refrão eu brinquei com as palavras por algum tempo ...... então eu mostrei para o meu co-escritor, Anders Lundquist, e ele veio com a história por trás do título. Eu acho que acabou ficando muito bom - É uma canção enérgica e feliz!

RtM: "Mr. Freedom" segue um lado mais Sleaze, com groove, e "The Pieces of My Heart" é uma Power Ballad, algo que não poderia faltar em um álbum do estilo! Gostaria que você comentasse um pouco mais sobre essas duas músicas.
Nalle: "Mr. Freedom" tem um pouco de influência de KISS no refrão eu acho. A letra que eu escrevi sobre como eu escapei da minha ex-namorada que era realmente ruim para mim, e é também sobre como eu fiquei livre da bebida. Minha história pesada na bebida começou quando eu estava com ela. Eu não quero culpá-la por tudo, mas ela era uma grande parte da minha situação naquela época ..... Eu queria ficar entorpecido e fugir da realidade ...
"The Pieces of My Heart" tem um toque de AOR americano no refrão ..... Os versos eu não tenho ideia de onde eu tirei. Eu acho que é uma balada muito original ..... As letras são mais sobre a vingança do que sentir tristeza, e tristeza depois de ser deixado por seu amor que você amou tanto, e depois lhe deixou.

RtM: Falando sobre mais duas das minhas favoritas, em "See you in My Dreams" podemos sentir uma carga muito emocional, e eu gostaria que você comentasse sobre ela.
Nalle: A canção foi 100% escrita para o meu irmão Benny que cometeu suicídio em 1986, época em que a canção também foi escrita. Sim, a música tem 30 anos! Algumas bandas e artistas a gravaram naquela época. As gravadoras amaram a canção ..... mas por algum motivo nunca foi lançada. Mas agora - está lá , no álbum. Infelizmente, há apenas algumas semanas, um dos caras que escreveram as letras completas da canção morreu - Nestor Geli - um grande cara.

RtM: Muito bom, "See you in my Dreams" tem uma grande história. E "From Rise to Fall", um Hard Rock muito cativante, que, como algumas outras faixas do álbum, imediatamente me lembrou Kiss, especialmente no coro e backing vocals! Muito bom!
Nalle: Para mim "From Rise To Fall" soa muito Def Leppard! Mas com certeza - KISS também! Isso está comigo! - Eu gosto disso também !

RtM: Finalizando sobre o Royal Mess, depois desta primeira experiência solo, você acha que será possível lançar um novo trabalho em breve? Como foram os resultados e a repercussão?
Nalle: A gravadora diz que estão prontos a qualquer hora para outro álbum do Royal Mess, então eu estou trabalhando nisso! CDs não estão vendendo muito hoje, mas as resenhas foram muito boas, assim estou muito feliz com ele!

RtM: Um elogio que eu gostaria de dar ao seu trabalho, é que você é um daqueles músicos que sempre põem muito sentimento nas composições, sempre procurando trazer uma contribuição significativa, e em seu álbum solo, podemos sentir esse sentimento e pegada. Uma coisa que me parece faltar em muitas bandas e músicos jovens hoje em dia, como vemos muitas "superproduções" e também um número muito grande de grupos soando muito semelhante e sem imaginação. Você acredita que isso é devido ao fato de que há muita preocupação em parecer perfeito, e esquecendo de pensar sobre a própria composição?
Nalle: Obrigado por suas palavras gentis! Em primeiro lugar eu acho que você deve "tocar música e tocar canções", e em segundo lugar você toca seu instrumento, você entende o que eu quero dizer? Eu não me importo de ser o baixista - o instrumento é apenas uma ferramenta que uso para expressar música. Há muitos virtuosos lá fora. Para mim é absolutamente desinteressante quão rápido você é ou quanta técnica você precisa para tocar isso e aquilo. Se você é assim, talvez deveria ser um atleta! 

A música é expressão e sentimento. E muitos jovens podem entrar de cabeça demais no que eles acreditam ser um estilo de vida rock'n'roll (?) Talvez eles estão mais pensando em ser um "rockstar legal" do que realmente performar (?) Mas o que eu sei .... E - alguns tendem a esquecer que tocar em uma banda é realmente um trabalho de equipe e não sobre si mesmo sendo um solista. Trata-se de ouvir mais os outros na banda do que ouvir a si mesmo na verdade.

RtM: Finalizando, se você tivesse que fazer uma "Time Line" de sua carreira, quais os dez álbuns mais importantes que você gravou? Apenas um pequeno "jogo" para fãs e pessoas que estão conhecendo, ou querem saber mais do seu trabalho.

Interview - Nalle Pahlsson (Therion, Royal Mess): "Music is expressions and feelings"

Perhaps for some the name NALLE PAHLSSON may not sound familiar, but for a fan of Hard Rock and connoisseur of the Swedish scene, will certainly link the name to bands like Treat, Last Autumn's Dream, Easy Action, Vindictiv, and most recently Luciferian Light Orchestra and , Of course, THERION, band that Nalle is member since 2008.  (Acesse a versão em português)

With great experience and ability that goes beyond a great bass player, and after so many services provided in albums of dozens of bands and artists, whether as official member, guest or musician hired, In 2011 Nalle decided to work on his solo project, where he would put into practice his ability as a composer, lead singer and multi-instrumentalist, with the sonority focused on bands that inspired him since he was a boy, simply music coming from his soul and heart, ROYAL MESS was released in 2015 by the Australian label MelodicRock Records.

We had a talk with Nalle to bring you some of the work of this important and talented Swedish musician, where he tells us about his beginning in music, the passion for Rock and Roll, a summary of his history as a musician, the works he was part of, the Entry into the Therion, the Royal Mess and more!


RtM: Nalle, the people who follows your work, knows that you're always involved in various projects, so tell me, do you have any idea how many albums you've recorded, either as a member or a guest?

Nalle: I actually have no idea........ ? I have to check it some day...... (laughs!)

RtM: And how did you get started in music? Who were the people who encouraged you at the beginning?

Nalle: It was my big brother Benny who was 10 years older than me who got me into the world of rock music. He´s the foundation for a very big part of my musical background. He had the albums with the cool bands and artists and I listened to his records very much as a kid. He also had a guitar that I learned to play by myself.

RtM: And the first bands that caught your attention?

Nalle: From the very start it was Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones. A bit later on there were Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath...... then The Sweet, KISS, Alice Cooper, Status Quo, David Bowie just to mention a few......In the late 70´s I also got in to more progressive stuff such as U.K. Genesis, Rush, Kansas etc....

RtM: You're a huge fan and a collector of Kiss, and logically it's one of your favorite bands.

Nalle: Yes, KISS is absolutely one of my biggest favourites, but it has of course very much to do with their image and all of that. They were living cartoons ! They were like Superman or Spiderman – but they were real! I discovered them when I was 11 or 12 years old. If you would have asked me or any other young boy at that time what they wanted to become, he would probably have said “A RockStar or a Super Hero” - KISS were both ! They were a little boy´s dream – and it was also about the mystique. Nobody knew what they looked like or who they were for about 10 years !

RtM: Specifically about Kiss, which items do you like best in your collection? Do you have any idea what the rarest item would be?

Nalle: I would say my autographed concert book from Stockholm, Sweden 1976 !

RtM: What did you think of the latest Kiss studio albums? As a fan you expect them to release new material yet? Some fans do not like Tommy and Eric  wearing the classic masks. Are you a radical fan type or more open minded?

Nalle: I think “Sonic Boom” is a really good album. “Monster” I wasn´t very happy with. And I have to be honest; Even if I´m a fan of the classic line-up – The band sounds better today with Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer. But for me – KISS will always be about  Gene, Paul, Peter & Ace ! But Tommy Thayer actually sounds more like Ace Frehley than Ace Frehley sounds like himself today ! KISS is more like “A Show” you go to watch. And to me it´s ok ! If Tommy and Eric uses the original members make-up...? - So let it be it ! I don´t care ! Bring on the show ! :-)

RtM: Coming back to your career, what was your first professional band? I remember AB/CD, a tribute band to AC / DC, which had a relative success there in Sweden.

Nalle: AB/CD was formed by me and some childhood friends in the end of 1983, and we still play now and then. We have actually sold more records than many other hardrock bands from the period of the early and mid 90´s.

RtM: You've also made and are part of well-known traditional bands like Treat and Vindictiv, tell us a little bit about your collaboration in these two great bands, especially Treat, which is loved by Hard Rock fans from around the world.

Nalle: I became a professional as freelance musician and played with very many different swedish and danish artists from 1983-2004 actually. It wasn´t until 2005 with TREAT that I really joined “a real band”, and in 2008 I joined THERION.

With Vindictiv I have recorded 4 albums....but I´m not part of the band anymore.....
I´m a big fan of Göran Edman who sang on the 2 first albums of VINDICTIV.

I was a member of  TREAT from 2005-2012 and actually, the album “Coup De Grace” that we recorded is a great statement for me as a bassplayer. Still today I get mails and people are coming up to me telling how much they love that album and that my bassplaying is so good on it – and that makes me happy ! :-) I really like that type of melodic hardrock.

RtM: Sweden, by the way, is recognized and respected as a major producer of excellent Metal and Rock bands, but mainly of Hard Rock, cited by many publications and journalists. Tell us a little bit about this "phenomenon", and why do you think that there are so many great bands of the style in your country?

Nalle: I really don´t know......? I guess we got very much influenced by brittish and american rock and pop music in the 1960´s, -70´s and -80´s....and swedish people are usually very organized and focused. Swedish people are also in some ways seen as a bit boring and strict.....and maybe that´s the way it is ? – but maybe we get very much of our feelings out from the music..... (?) Music is really about expressing yourself. And it seems we know how to do it.

RtM: Of recent releases, we have the Last Autumn’s Dream’s album, in which the band pays homage to several classics, such as Sweet and Kiss. Tell us a little more about this release, and how you were choosing the songs. I bet Kiss was a vote of your own!

Nalle: We´ve had a few covers on earlier albums of L.A.D. And we actually had been thinking of to record a full cover album...... and when it came to the point that we noticed we would have too little time for original material this time, it was a good opportunity to do it. And we´ve actually got VERY good reactions from everywhere so far ! Many of the songs are so anonymous that people in the end will believe these are our own songs :-D. We choose the songs together and Jamie told me to pick a KISS song. And it became “All the way” from the album “Hotter Than Hell” !

RtM: Gathering of Kings is also a new project that you are involved in, and soon will be released by Melodic Rock Records. Tell us a little more about this project, wich have many great musicians. I have great expectations!!

Nalle: So far we´ve only recorded 2 songs, but it seems like we´re gonna record the rest of the album in march-april. Hopefully it will be released before this year is over.

RtM: Upon your entry on Therion, tell us how the invitation was, and I believe that as a musician it should be very gratifying, because the band has a very personal and original sound, and certainly was and remains a challenge for you as a musician.

Nalle: Thomas Vikström who was an old colleague of mine (now a dear friend) recommended me and Johan Kullberg when Petter Karlsson and Johan Niemann quit. We just went to a rehearsal place here in Stockholm and tried a few songs out. One of them was “The Blood of Kingu” and one more that I can´t remember. We just played the songs through and then Christofer Johnsson said “It sounds good – Just like it use to and the way it should do” (something like that) – So, then the thing was clear. We became members of the new Therion line-up. At that time I had no idea that Therion was so popular in South America. I got totally shocked when we got to the first gig in Mexico City.

RtM: I see you feel really good about Therion, as Christopher always says, is a family, and he's always looked for people who have a great relationship, not only internally, but also with the fans.

Nalle: Yes, to me music should be about friendship and having fun together, and that is the way it is in Therion. We feel comfortable with each other and we feel a deep respect for the fans! Without the fans you´re nothing but “another band”...

RtM: Therion is finalizing the recordings of their Rock Opera, and you also recorded parts of the guitars, and sure the bass. Tell me a little about the records, how are your expectations around this album.

Nalle: I´m actually VERY excited to hear the final result! When I recorded the bass and rhythm guitars there were not very much vocals recorded yet, so I really don´t know how it will sound...... There were also very much other instruments missing...... I´m just wondering about it being so long......3,5 hours ! It´s going totally against everything in this “fast going world” we´re living in today......Will the fans have the strength and will to really get into it ? We´ll see......

RtM: In 2015 you finally, after being part of so many bands and collaborating with so many people, released your solo album, Royal Mess. Tell us a little bit how you felt about this step in your career?

Nalle: It was something I´ve had in my mind for many years and I felt it had to be done! And I´m really pleased with the result. It contains so much of the music I grew up with, and that still today is there deep in my heart and soul. Deep down I´m a very simple guy who just loves simple and powerful music. It also felt good for me to show people I´m nor only the bassplayer, but also a guitar player, singer, producer and songwriter.

RtM: And how surged the idea or the need  to launch a solo? Had not you felt this need before?

Nalle: I guess every musician has that dream. To make your own record and show others what you´re able to do and to prove to yourself that you can do it ! It´s of course also very much of an “ego thing”.

RtM: You can also showcase your ability as a vocalist (receiving many compliments for this experience as lead singer), and multi-instrumentalist, showing much more who Nalle is as a musician and composer, and that your vein is actually Hard Rock,  such as Melodic Rock, Sleaze and AOR.

Nalle: I´m very happy to have received all of these good reviews from all over the world. I´m so thankful that I have got so much back from both listeners and journalists! And yes – I agree; I see myself as a true rocker ! :-)

RtM: The fact of knowing and collaborating with many artists, I also believe, made it possible to have many special guests. Tell us a bit about how you organized the recordings and production of the album, having several guests to "distribute" on the songs.

Nalle: My plan was to bring in friends and colleagues from the music business that I´ve played live with or had recorded with – or that I just had some relation to in music business. I managed to get around 25 guests aboard! Everybody that I asked were willing to join! Most of the guitar players recorded their solos in their own studios and then sent the files over to me after we had some talk on the phone. There are still many friends that I want to have on my recordings – so now I´m planning the follower to my first Royal Mess album !

RtM: About the sound, besides the Hard Rock that has this characteristic of Swedish bands, I felt a lot of influence from Kiss, something quite obvious as your influence! There is no way! I would like you to tell us more about your inspirations in the composition of the album.

Nalle: I actually never thought about where the inspiration came from for the songs.....? I don´t think you can hear anything that is some kind of Rip-Off or something like that....but sure, I´m inspired by KISS.......and I guess you can also hear some influences from AC/DC in “Gold Digger”.... The stuff that sounds a bit more american I guess I´ve got from my inspiration from the bands Journey, Foreigner and ToTo that I love very much.

 "I failed a couple of times, but in the end I confessed that I really had a drinking problem and I decided for myself to start a new life without alcohol."

RtM: In some lyrics you approached your personal drama, which was the fight against alcohol, which fortunately you won. Could you tell us a bit about it, and what advice or encouragement would you give to people or families who suffer with this type of problem?

Nalle: People are telling me that I´m strong to keep away from the alcohol and so on..... but I would like to say that it´s more of a decision! I failed a couple of times, but in the end I confessed that I really had a drinking problem and I decided for myself to start a new life without alcohol. I´ve been sticking to that decision now for almost 6 years – and I feel better than ever! 

Today I actually pretty often feel ashamed of how much swedish people drink...... Alcohol is like religion here. You can´t have fun, you can´t be yourself, you can´t have a good time without drinking – and it´s being announced on FaceBook all the time. Drinking alcohol is the highlight of the week – getting drunk, feeling free and happy – C´mon be yourself – have a drink! I know all of it – Cause I´ve been like that myself ! Today I know better! We are actually quite many musicians here in Sweden who has totally quit drinking.

RtM: Talking about some of the songs, "Aces High" is a great opening, referring to the Hard Rock of the 80's. I'd like you to tell us more about it.

Nalle: Well......... For this one I only had the music and the title......the words for the chorus I played around with for some time......then I showed it to my co-writer Anders Lundquist, and he came up with the story behind the title. I think it turned out to be really good – It´s an energic and happy song !

RtM: "Mr. Freedom" follows a more Sleaze side, with groove, and "The Pieces of my Heart" is a Power Ballad, something that could not miss in an album of the style! I would like you to comment a bit more about these two songs.

Nalle: "Mr Freedom" is a bit KISS-influenced in the chorus I guess..... The lyrics I wrote about how I escaped my ex-girlfriend who was really bad for me......and it´s also about how I got free from the drinking. My heavy drinking started when I was together with her. I don´t want to blame her for everything, but she was a big part of my situation back then..... I wanted to get numb and escape reality......

“The Pieces of My Heart” has a touch of american oriented rock in the chorus..... The verses I have no idea where I got them from..... ? I think it´s a pretty original ballad.....The lyrics are more about revenge than feeling sorrow and sadness after being left by your love you held so dear – until she betrayed you......

RtM: Talking about more two of my favorites, in "See you in My Dreams" we can feel a very emotional load, and I would like you to comment the lyrics.

Nalle: The song is a 100% written to my brother Benny who committed suicide back in 1986 whereas the song also was written. Yes, the song is 30 years old ! Some bands and artists recorded it at that time. The record companies loved it.....but for some reason it was never released. But now – it is out there ! Unfortunately, just a couple of weeks ago, also one of the guys who wrote the full lyrics for the song died – Nestor Geli – a great and nice guy.

RtM: And "From Rise to Fall" is another very captivating Hard Rock, which, like some other tracks from the album, immediately referred me to Kiss, especially in the chorus and backing vocals! Very good!

Nalle: To me “From Rise To Fall” sounds very much Def Leppard! But sure – KISS as well! That´s ok with me! - I like it too!

RtM: There are many great Hard Rock/Rock and Roll songs! "Hell City", "To Hell and Back".....We could talk about every song! The album is great! Finishing on the Royal Mess, after this first solo experience, do you intend to release a new work soon? How were the results and the repercussion?

Nalle: The record company says they are ready anytime for another Royal Mess álbum só I´m working on it! CD:s aren´t selling very much today, but the reviews have been very good, so I´m very happy about it!

RtM: A compliment that I would like to give to your work, is that you are one of those musicians who always puts a lot of feeling in the compositions, always looking to make a significant contribution, and in their solo album, we can feel this feeling and footprint a lot. One thing that seems to me missing in many young bands and musicians nowadays, as we see many "superproductions" and also a very large number of groups sounding very similar and unimaginative. Do you believe that this is due to the fact that there is a lot of concern about sounding perfect, and forgetting to think about the composition itself?

Nalle: Thanks for your kind words ! :-) First of all I think you should “play music and play songs” in the second place you play your instrument, if you see what I mean ? I don´t care about me being the bassplayer – the instrument is only a tool I use to express music. There are too much virtuosos out there. To me it´s absolutely uninteresting how fast you are or how much technique you need to play this and that. If you´re like that, you may as well be into sports! Music is expressions and feelings. And many youngsters may be a bit too much into what they believe is a rock´n´roll lifestyle (?) Maybe they´re more thinking of to be a “cool rockstar” than to really perform (?) But what do I know....AND – some tend to forget that playing in a band is really a teamwork and NOT about yourself being a soloist. It´s about listening more to the others in the band than listening to yourself actually.

RtM: And if you have to do a “Time Line” of your career, what the ten more important albums wich you have recorded? Just a little “game” to fans and people who are knowing, or wants to know more of your work.

Nalle Pahlsson's Royal Mess: Hard Rock com Raça e Coração!

Nalle Pahlsson é um músico suéco, integrante do THERION desde 2008, e com uma vasta experiência no cenário do Hard Rock e Melodic Rock, tendo trabalhos em bandas e artistas como TREAT, LAST AUTUMN'S DREAM, CHRIS LANEY, VINDICTIV, RANDY PIPER'S ANIMAL, EASY ACTION entre outros. Mas além de ser um excelente baixista, Nalle também canta e toca diversos instrumentos, então nada melhor do que um trabalho solo onde ele pudesse mostrar muito mais da sua capacidade, sendo a estrela principal.  (English Version)

Nalle conta que no início de 2011 tomou a decisão de fazer um álbum de puro Rock & Roll, onde ele faria as composições, cantaria e tocaria a música que vem do seu coração e alma, inspirada pelas bandas e artistas que ele ouvia desde garoto (leia-se aí, KISS, AC/DC, Def Leppard, Toto, Journey, Foreigner). Então finalmente após tantos anos no meio musical, nasceu o ROYAL MESS.

Para dar ainda mais colorido ao álbum, Nalle chamou vários amigos e colegas os quais tocou ou conheceu nesse meio, tendo então gente como o ex-companheiro de Therion Kristian Niemann, Pontus Norgren (The Poodles, Hammerfall), Linnéa Vikström (Therion), Kee Marcello, Jamie Borger (Treat, LAD) entre outros, somando cerca de 25 convidados! Nalle teve a parceria do amigo Stefan Lundquist nas composições, produziu o álbum, e teve a mixagem e masterização a cargo de Chris Laney.

O resultado? Bom, o que Nalle pretendia fazer, conseguiu, e gravou um álbum de Hard Rock empolgante, que realmente você sente que as músicas foram feitas com o coração! Músicas cheias de energia, refrãos grudentos, sem esquecer as melodias e o os teclados.  E Nalle ainda se mostrou um vocalista (o timbre rouco, que às vezes lembra Gene Simmons, encaixam muito bem na proposta) e compositor de respeito dentro do estilo.

Temos Hard Rocks vibrantes, como a abertura "Aces High" e seu refrão grudento. Detalhe para a descrição no encarte, onde além dos vocais, guitarra base e baixo, Nalle tocou "Thin Lizzy Guitars", ha ha ha, ou seja, aquelas melodias dobradas de guitarra marca registrada da banda; em "Hell City" a linha vocal me lembrou Gene Simmons, e remetendo ao KISS, banda da qual Nalle é fã declarado. Hard Rock com mais um ótimo refrão e um toque de virtuose por conta da guitarra solo de  Kristian Niemann; "MR. Freedom" é uma faixa com bastante groove (o riff inicial me lembrou "American Woman") e mais um ótimo refrão; "Gold Digger" tem uma letra bem divertida (fala sobre uma daquelas mulheres que estão "apaixonadas" pela conta bancária do cara), com uma levada bem Rock and Roll, numa veia AC/DC.

"Breakout" é um Hard encorpado e com bastante punch, com as linhas de baixo bem em destaque, e traz Kee Marcello na guitarra solo; "Higher Than Seventh Heaven" diria que é um Hard n'Roll com aquele pegada das bandas Norte Americanas, também com uma levada bem vibrante e refrão cheio de backing vocals; "The Pieces of My Heart" é uma balada sofisticada com toques de AOR, algo da cena Americana e até Def Leppard da fase mais "americanizada"; "To Hell and Back" é mais outros Hard/Rock and Roll cheio de energia e refrão que gruda na mente.

"Trip" tem um balanço legal e deliciosos backing vocals, além de Max Lorentz no Hammond; "From Rise to Fall" traz também riffs e linha de baixo com bastante groove, destacando o refrão e o estilão meio Def Leppard; "Loaded Gun" é artilharia pesada, cheia de punch e traz os parceiros de THERION Christian Vidal na guitarra solo e Linnéa nos backing vocals (que aliás, aparece em vária canções nos backing vocals); fechando o álbum a emocional balada "See you in My Dreams", que Nalle compôs em homenagem ao seu irmão. Refrão marcante, melodias do teclado que lembram algo de Foreigner.

Resumindo, um puta álbum de Hard Rock, Rock and Roll e Melodic Rock, com aquela veia oitentista (principalmente o Hard Norte Americano, onde tivemos o "boom" nos anos 80), uma pegada atual, daquele jeito que os suécos sabem fazer muito bem. Realmente, um álbum de puro Rock, com música carregada de energia, honestidade e quem vem do coração! Recomendado para os fãs de estilo e de um bom, cativante e enérgico Rock and Roll.

Nalle Pahlsson's Royal Mess: Hard Rock from the Heart

Nalle Pahlsson is a Swedish musician who has been a member of THERION since 2008 and has extensive experience in the Hard Rock and Melodic Rock scene, with bands and artists such as TREAT, LAST AUTUMN'S DREAM, CHRIS LANEY, VINDICTIV, RANDY PIPER'S ANIMAL, EASY ACTION among others. But besides being a great bass player, Nalle also sings and plays several instruments, so nothing better than a solo job where he could show a lot more of his ability, being the main star. Nalle says that in early 2011 he made the decision to make a pure Rock & amp; Roll, where he would do his compositions, sing and play the music that comes from his heart and soul, inspired by the bands and artists he had heard since he was a kid. (Read KISS, AC / DC, Def Leppard, Toto, Journey, Foreigner). So finally after so many years in the musical environment,  ROYAL MESS was born.

To make the album even more colorful, Nalle called a number of friends and colleagues whom he played or met in music business, and then people like Therion's ex-partner Kristian Niemann, Pontus Norgren (The Poodles, Hammerfall), Linnéa Vikström (Therion) Kee Marcello, Jamie Borger (Treat, LAD) among others, totaling about 25 guests! Nalle had the partnership of his friend Stefan Lundquist in the compositions, produced the album, and had the mixing and mastering by Chris Laney.

The result? Well, what Nalle intended to do, got it, and recorded an exciting Hard Rock album, that you really feel like the songs were made with the heart! Songs full of energy, sticky refrains, not forgetting the melodies and the keyboards. And Nalle still turned out to be a vocalist (the hoarse timbre, which sometimes resembles Gene Simmons, fit very well in the proposal) and composer of respect within the style.

We have vibrant Hard Rocks, such as the opening "Aces High" and its sticky chorus. Detail for the description on the insert, where in addition to the vocals, base and bass guitar, Nalle played "Thin Lizzy Guitars". Very nice! those twin guitar melodies trademark of the legendary Phil Lynott's band; In "Hell City" the vocal line reminded me of Gene Simmons, and referring to KISS, a band that Nalle is a fan of. Hard Rock with another great refrain and a touch of virtuosity on account of Kristian Niemann's solo guitar; "MR. Freedom" is a pretty groove track (the initial riff reminds me "American Woman") and another great chorus; "Gold Digger" has a very funny lyrics (talks about one of those women who are "in love" with the guy's bank account), with a good Rock and Roll, in an AC / DC vein.

"Breakout" is a  punchy Hard, with great and kind of "funky" bass lines, and also brings Kee Marcello on guitar solo; "Higher Than Seventh Heaven" would say that it is a Hard n'Roll with that North American bands trademark, also with a very vibrant beat and chorus full of backing vocals; "The Pieces of My Heart" is a sophisticated ballad with touches of AOR, something from the American scene and even Def Leppard from the more "Americanized" phase; "To Hell and Back" is another very good Hard/Rock and Roll full of energy and refrain that sticks in the mind.

"Trip" has a cool swing and delightful backing vocals, plus Max Lorentz in Hammond; "From Rise to Fall" also brings riffs and bass line with enough groove, highlighting the refrain and a little of Def Leppard; "Loaded Gun" is heavy artillery, full of punch and brings THERION partners Christian Vidal on solo guitar and Linnéa on backing vocals (who appears in several backing vocals); Closing the album to the emotional ballad "See you in My Dreams", which Nalle composed in honor of his brother. Remarkable chorus, keyboard melodies that resemble something from Foreigner.

Resuming... a fucking great album of Hard Rock, Rock and Roll and Melodic Rock, with that 80´s vein, sounding contemporary, with the way the Swedish know how to do very well. Really, an album of pure Rock, with music loaded with energy, honesty and that comes from the heart! Recommended for Hard Rock fans and of a good and energetic Rock and Roll.
