Entrevista: Sonya Scarlet (Theatres Des Vampires): Uma Viagem ao Interior dos Medos Humanos

"É uma viagem ao interior dos medos humanos", foi como Sonia Siccardi, mais conhecida no Metal mundial como Sonya Scarlet, líder do Theatres Des Vampires, mencionado por muitos como criadores do Vampiric Metal, definiu para nós o conceito do novo álbum, "Candyland", lançado agora no dia 14 de outubro.    (ENGLISH VERSION)

Nesta conversa com Road to Metal Sonya contou-nos mais sobre o álbum, sobre a sua maneira de compor, a teatralidade de suas performances, a sua forma muito original de se vestir, as letras que lidam com esoterismo, ocultismo, histórias fantásticas, o lado escuro da literatura, e também conversamos sobre o seu lado mais pessoal, a mulher que cuida de seu corpo, que tem engajamento em causas sociais, e mais, lembramos o momento em que ela se tornou a única vocalista da banda, marcando uma nova era para o TDV, e eles tem agora 22 anos de carreira, e certamente virão muito mais, afinal de contas, os vampiros são eternos! Confira:

RtM: Olá Sonya, obrigado por nos dar a oportunidade de falar sobre o novo álbum, e também trazer um pouco mais sobre você e a banda para o público no Brasil, para os fãs antigos, e, certamente, novas pessoas que conhecerão o trabalho de TDV.

Sonya Scarlet: Obrigado Carlos, pela entrevista e apoio.

RtM: Vamos começar com o novo álbum? A banda sempre mostrou evolução em cada novo disco, trazendo novos elementos, e em "Candyland", notamos mais elementos electrônicos, por exemplo. Que outros elementos novos  você diria que foram adicionados no novo álbum, e  que pode surpreender os fãs?

Sonya: O novo álbum continua a manter a atmosfera melancólica e maldita de obras anteriores, mas seu som é mais mais direto, decisivo e violento. "Candyland" é um álbum agressivo com uma personalidade forte, com um som de guitarra poderoso, mas não é só isso. Há também momentos de calma que envolvem o ouvinte nos braços de uma melancolia sem fim, um recurso que continuamos a amar totalmente.

"Certamente é um álbum diferente dos trabalhos anteriores, porque diferente foi a atitude e a forma de trabalho, mas ainda mantendo o nosso estilo ... porque nossa mente e coração estão sempre no estilo vampírico de ser."

RtM: "Moonlight Waltz" é meu trabalho favorito até agora, mas "Candyland" está muito perto de tomar o seu lugar! É difícil para um artista fazer comparações entre os álbuns, mas, fazendo a análise em termos de som, composição e produção, você diria "Candyland" pode se tornar o álbum mais bem sucedido, e considerado o ápice da banda até agora?

Sonya: Sim, é realmente difícil comparar dois álbuns diferentes, como "Moonlight Waltz" e "Candyland". Eu penso que eles são apenas diferentes, porque diferente foi a inspiração que nos levou a compô-lo, e diferente são pessoas que trabalharam nele. Nosso produtor Christian Ice e eu, junto com a banda, trabalhamos duro todos os dias em "Candyland" depois da nossa separação com Fabian, que decidiu deixar a banda para seguir seus interesses pessoais, mas ainda mantém uma forte amizade com a gente. Então começamos a partir de um ponto de vista diferente, não mais da atmosfera teclados, mas de minhas letras, criando arranjos a partir delas e sobre o ritmo das minhas palavras por todo o álbum. Então, o que saiu foi um som muito poderoso, com grandes riffs de guitarra, certamente diferente dos trabalhos anteriores, porque diferente foi a atitude e a forma de trabalho, mas ainda mantendo o nosso estilo ... porque nossa mente e coração estão sempre no estilo vampírico de ser.

RtM: Como surgiu a ideia de abordar esta história do Pennhurst Asylum. Onde você conseguiu as fontes para pesquisar sobre isso mais profundamente?

Sonya: Eu sempre tive um interesse especial em histórias interessantes e assustadoras, cerca de lugares misteriosos e abandonados, sobre a loucura humana e doenças. Alguns anos atrás eu vi um documentário sobre um lugar que eu conhecia antes, aquela história era inacreditável, a história do Asilo Pennhurst, e fiquei chocada mais uma vez ao ouvir essa história real. Naquele exato momento eu decidi o título do álbum e o conceito de todo o álbum. Decidi devolver a voz a todas as pessoas que sofrem por problemas mentais, que estão fechados em suas próprias palavras ... em sua mente...perdidos para sempre.

RtM: Eu gostaria que você nos detalhasse um pouco mais o conceito lírico.

Sonya: Em detalhes, o nome do novo álbum é inspirado por uma sala em Pennhurst, diferente de todas as outras, com paredes coloridas e barras nas janelas. Um quarto descrito como o inferno na terra pelos pacientes internados naquela instituição infame, onde por décadas adultos e crianças com problemas mentais graves foram escondidos dos olhos do público.

Uma história triste, mas infelizmente verdadeira, e os próprios pacientes batizaram a sala - com suas paredes coloridas e da qual ninguém podia sair - Candyland.

"Candyland" é uma viagem através dos corredores do asilo, através do medo daqueles que - trancados dentro dos baluartes da Pennhurst - foram deixados para viver na companhia solitária de seus medos mais profundos e angustiantes, contada através de suas palavras, acompanhados por seus choros de desespero.

Jamais compreendidos. Jamais livres. Jamais verdadeiramente vivos.

RtM: Na primeira impressão, quando o título do álbum foi divulgado, e a alusão ao Asilo Pennhurst, eu pensei queseria um álbum conceitual sobre os eventos lá, mas eu vi, então, que há outras questões, como em "Resurrection Mary", que trata de uma lenda urbana de Chicago. Os temas das letras tem conexões? Vejo que há muitas coisas implícitas nas canções.

Sonya: Foi certamente a minha inspiração mais forte para este álbum, mas não foi a única.

"Candyland" é uma viagem ao interior dos medos humanos ... todos nós temos algo que nos assusta .... que não podemos lutar, porque, no final, é parte de nós ... algo ligado com os nossos medos na infância, é a metade escura que grita ... e às vezes não podemos controlar isso ... e temos de caminhar lá fora, no lado escuro do mundo, fora desta sociedade .... cada canção tem a sua própria história, sua própria obsessão .... Eu vou de medos humanos para literatura, o lado escuro da literatura, como a "Máscara da Morte Vermelha" de Edgar Alan Poe ( "Seventh Room"), para Coleridge. "Opium Shades" é minha homenagem a Coleridge ... eu me perdi em seu delírio de ópio, enquanto ele escrevia seu Kublai Khan ..

Especificamente sobre "Resurrection Mary", é inspirada por uma história real de fantasmas na área de Chicago. Em 1930, vários homens que dirigiam a nordeste ao longo da Archer Avenue, entre o Ballroom Willowbrook e Cemitério da Ressurreição, relataram sobre uma jovem mulher que pedia carona. Esta jovem mulher vestia-se um pouco formalmente, com um vestido de festa branco, diziam ter o cabelo louro claro e olhos azuis. ela usava um xale fino, sapatos da dança, carregava uma pequena bolsa de mão. Quando o motorista se aproximava do Cemitério da Ressurreição, a jovem pede pedia para descer, e então ela desaparecia no cemitério ... Cada música tem sua própria história, histórias realmente sombrias.

RtM: Duas das nossas favoritas, além da faixa-título, são "Panasomnia", que tem um ritmo muito vibrante, e "Pierrot Lunaire", que assim como "Candyland", tem uma atmosfera mais tensa, mais pesada, destacando belas melodias na guitarra, além de seus vocais, sensuais e com linhas operísticas também. Eu gostaria que você comentasse um pouco mais sobre essas músicas.

Sonya: Estou feliz que vocês gostaram dessas músicas ... elas representam o lado gótico deste álbum.

"Candyland" foi a primeira música que escrevi para o novo álbum, tudo começou a partir daí ...

a canção é sobre esse maldito quarto visto através dos olhos de uma criança ... uma criança que foi abandonada pela mãe naquele lugar horrível e que, ano após ano, tem visto outras crianças morrem em torno dela .. aquele mundo de dor e paredes coloridas torna-se menor dia após dia, as paredes pareciam fechar-se em torno dela porque a menina tinha crescido ... mas ninguém conseguia escapar de Pennhurst, nem mesmo ela.

"Pierrot Lunaire" é uma canção profundamente triste e conta a história de um pierrot que queria dar um sorriso para as pessoas ao redor dele. Mas porque ele era diferente de todos os outros, tendo uma incrível tristeza dentro de sua alma, as pessoas normais o ignoravam, deixando-o sozinho, mas ele quer dar-se ao mundo, então ele decide rasgar o coração de seu peito, pintando um sorriso em seu rosto com o sangue, mas as pessoas fugiam gritando.

"Parasomnia" é uma canção na cara, esmagadora, rápida e louca. A canção é sobre um homem que tem medo de cair no sono, pois em seus pesadelos alguém tenta matá-lo, ele está em uma sala do hospital mental e desenha cruzes na parede para marcar o tempo e o passar dos dias, sem nunca dormir. Parassonia é o terror da noite, o medo inconsciente.

RtM: "Seventh Room" também é uma música que eu gostaria que você nos falasse mais, inclusive temos nela a participação de Fernando Ribeiro.

Sonya: Eu sempre amei Moonspell, eles são uma grande banda. Fernando tem uma grande voz e ele é um vocalista incrível, então eu decidi entrar em contato com ele. Fernando é realmente uma pessoa amável e uma profissional real. Ele ficou feliz com esta nova colaboração, como todos o grande artista que ele gosta de compartilhar e tentar algo novo com a música, e ele fez um excelente trabalho, me enviou um vídeo de sua gravação de "Seventh Room". Uma agradável surpresa. É uma grande honra e prazer ter sua voz no nosso último trabalho. Sobre a canção, é inspirada pela Máscara da Morte Vermelha, de E.A.Poe.

RtM: E sobre os elementos visuais e teatrais para a turnê do novo álbum, o que você está preparando?

Sonya: Estamos trabalhando nisso, eu gostaria de fazer um longo vídeo pra ser projetado no palco durante o show com imagens fortes, e também outras coisas que eu tenho em minha mente ... mas, vamos ver! Eu espero que vocês vejam o nosso novo show em breve.

RtM: Além de Gothic Metal, o estilo da banda é normalmente referido como "Vampiric Metal", inclusive citado como a criadora deste estilo. O que você acha sobre esta tag? Tags e subgêneros são mais negativas ou positivas?

Sonya: Eu acho que as tags ajudam as pessoas a encontrar coisas que elas gostam. Não é ruim. Na verdade, eu estou começando a aprender a usá-los em nossas redes sociais!! Eu não sou tão boa e eu ainda estou tentando entender como funcionam!

É como um vestido muito apertado que nós tentamos colocar necessariamente ..mas a realidade é que você não pode descrever a música em uma palavra ou em uma tag. Por trás de cada banda há ideias, pessoas, influências diferentes e anos de trabalho.

RtM: E o seu interesse e ligação com o tema do vampirismo? Como surgiu esse interesse, e também a oportunidade de usar este tema em uma banda?

Sonya: Eu sempre fui interessada em romances góticos, ocultismo, vampirismo e todo do lado escuro do mundo e do mundo invisível, desde que eu era muito pequena. Quando entrei na banda eu encontrei pessoas que compartilhavam os mesmos interesses e foi perfeito. Não houve coincidências. As coincidências não existem, era o destino. Então eu usei coisas que eu amo para escrever minhas letras, inspiradas por literatura, arte, poemas, esoterismo ..

RtM: Quando você se tornou a única vocalista do grupo, a banda acabou tomando uma nova direção em termos de som. Vocês viram como uma necessidade a fim de levar a banda a um outro nível, ou foi uma evolução natural do que estava acontecendo? Você poderia nos contar mais sobre como foi essa transição na época?

Sonya: Isso foi definitivamente um momento muito importante na nossa carreira. depois da nossa separação com o nosso ex-vocalista, decidimos tomar dois caminhos diferentes, seguirmos em frente com um som mais Gothic Metal, mais perto de nossas atitudes e nossa personalidade. Aquele foi um momento de uma grande mudança para a nossa banda. No início nós até procuramos um novo cantor, em seguida, a banda pediu-me para se tornar-me a única vocalista da banda. Eles disseram que era a melhor escolha. Foi um momento inesquecível, dentro de mim eu tinha emoções conflitantes, por um lado, eu estava muito feliz e grata à banda por me dar essa confiança, por outro lado, eu estava com medo, medo de encarar essa mudança importante, eu estava com medo de falhar .Mas foi tão natural em vez disso, eu pude me expressar livremente nas letras e na música e nós estamos aqui, depois de muitos álbuns importantes, prontos para o lançamento de "Candyland". Estou orgulhosa da minha banda.

RtM: O Theatres Des Vampires, também desenvolveu esse visual e postura mais teatral, e você com certeza é em grande parte responsável. Eu gostaria que você nos contasse mais sobre isso, esses elementos cênicos e teatrais que você usa, você estudou interpretação também? E como surgiu essa sua forma muito característica de vestir, e incorporando na banda esses elementos teatrais?

Sonya: Eu nunca estudei atuação, mas fui durante muitos anos uma bailarina clássica. Eu conheço o palco bem. A primeira vez que eu subi no palco eu tinha 5 anos de idade. A dança me ensinou a me expressar com o corpo, com o movimento, com a expressão facial. Sobre as roupas, eu tenho a minha estilista, a talentosa Katja, do DIKTATOR FASHION LAB. Além de ser uma grande amiga minha, Katja é realmente uma designer talentosa, a melhor em tudo, e ela conhece cada milímetro do meu corpo e cada canção do Theatres Des Vampires. Ela conhece a minha personalidade e ela sabe como criar para mim a roupa perfeita, dando-me a oportunidade de expressar-me totalmente e representar minha música da melhor maneira vampírica!

RtM: E para manter toda essa energia no palco, assim como sua sensualidade característica, que cuidados você para manter a sua forma física e beleza? Bom, sendo uma vampira, eu acredito que é fácil pra você manter-se sempre bela e cheia de energia! Ha ha ha

Sonya: Para ser sempre jovem você tem que realmente trabalhar para isso! Ha ha ha

Gosto de cuidar de mim mesma, eu sempre vou a academia porque eu sou uma pessoa muito ativa, e é muito bom para o meu corpo e minha alma. Isso é importante para o meu equilíbrio, caso contrário seria alguém muito nervosa, provavelmente... Adoro trekking, esquiar e fazer todos os esportes que vierem em sua mente ... até surfar...embora não seja tão boa neste! E na verdade, sempre serei uma vampira!

RtM: E as suas expectativas em relação ao futuro?

Sonya: Eu espero que eu possa continuar o que eu já estou fazendo, sou grata e orgulhosa do que alcançamos até hoje, e eu quero agradecer à todas as pessoas e os fãs que acreditam em nós, se estamos aqui hoje para fazer esta entrevista, com um novo álbum, é apenas por causa de todos vocês. Espero continuar da melhor forma, espalhando nossa música em todo o mundo.

RTM: Grupos dos anos 70, como Alice Cooper e Kiss elevaram a outro nível esta questão de transformar um show de Rock em um espetáculo, e desde então sempre aparecem outros representantes, como o TDV, King Diamond, Rammstein, Ghost e também os seus conterrâneos do Deathless Legacy. Como você vê esse cenário hoje? Quais dessas bandas mais jovens você acha que incorporaram melhor esta questão de dar algo mais para o público?

Sonya: Eu acho que cada banda tem sua própria personalidade e deve expressá-la como eles preferirem. Há bandas que gostam de ter um grande efeito visual, já outras bandas concentram-se na música sem se preocupar muito sobre o resto, ambos são perfeitos. Todo mundo tem que fazer o que sente e o que pensa, sempre sendo ele mesmo. Para nós, o visual é uma parte muito importante, porque é parte de nós, da nossa maneira de ser, do que queremos transmitir ao nosso público. Queremos abraçar nossos fãs em uma espécie de incrível pesadelo.

Eu amo todas as bandas que você citou e eu amo seus shows. Eu acho que hoje ter o cuidado com a imagem e a música é importante. Mas a coisa mais importante é ter algo a dizer, uma personalidade e um grande som.

RtM: E o TDV já tem 22 anos de carreira, que balanço você faz dessas mais de duas décadas? Acredito que teremos muitas décadas de Theatres Des Vampires pela frente.

Sonya: Sinceramente não percebemos que todos esses anos se passaram!!! Nós certamente passamos por muitas mudanças na nossa banda, tanto na formação como na evolução musical, mas honestamente os nossos recursos e energia nunca vai esgotar, eu pessoalmente já estou pensando no próximo álbum, sobre quais questões vão me inspirar, criar novas letras. .. Gosto de começar tudo desde o começo, mais uma vez ... este é um trem sangrento que nunca para!!

RtM: você também é uma pessoa engajada em projetos sociais, gostaria de nos contar um pouco sobre isso.

Sonya: Ajudar aqueles que são menos afortunados do que nós é muito importante, e dá um significado diferente para a vida. Percebemos que a vida real é outra, é diferente, é feita de milhares de pequenas coisas que, em nosso egoísmo, não percebemos nesta sociedade. Nós nascemos na parte sortuda do mundo, e reclamamos todos os dias, nunca estamos satisfeitos. Eu tenho visto muitos países pobres, vi as crianças revirando em um grande depósito de lixo na Nicarágua, em busca de comida e procurando objetos para vender, eu vi países como Nepal destruídos após um terremoto, e fundações como Jay Nepal, da qual faço parte, estão tentando ajudar no dia a dia, trabalhando com pessoas do Nepal, metendo as mãos na lama para ajudar essas pessoas.

RTM: Você que teve a oportunidade de tantas experiências,  gostaria de saber a sua opinião sobre a sociedade e o ser humano hoje em dia.

Sonya: Eu acho que há muitas pessoas incríveis por aí, eu tenho tanta sorte de ter encontrado muitas delas. O que me assusta muito provavelmente é a nova geração ... eles não têm ideia a respeito do mundo, da música, da vida propriamente dita. Pra eles basta seguir as novas tendências sem acreditar em algo. Mas, nem todos eles são iguais. Conheço muitas pessoas jovens que são realmente inteligentes, e muitos deles seguem o Theatres Des Vampires, grandes caras! Sou orgulhosa de vocês!

"Ajudar aqueles que são menos afortunados do que nós é muito importante, e dá um significado diferente para a vida. Percebemos que a vida real é outra, feita de pequenas coisas..."

RtM: E quando você não está envolvida em projetos musicais ou sociais, o que você gosta de fazer no seu tempo livre? Leitura, viagens, cinema?

Sonya: Eu amo filmes, mas eu odeio ir ao cinema ... e eu nunca vou! Eu odeio sentar perto de pessoas que eu não sei quem são, para mim, assistir a um filme é um momento de relaxamento, então eu prefiro fazer isso na minha casa, com meus amigos e muitas cervejas ... e sangue! A coisa que eu mais gosto é viajar e visitar diferentes países cada vez mais, mas uma cerveja com os amigos é um das melhores coisas. Amigos e familiares são muito importantes para mim.

RtM: E uma Tour aqui na América do Sul? Esperamos que desta vez seja sem sobressaltos, porque, em 2012, infelizmente vocês não conseguiram desembarcar na Venezuela, afetando toda a turnê aqui na América do Sul! Você recebeu alguma explicação para tal atitude das autoridades desse país?

Sonya: Infelizmente, o cancelamento da turnê foi causada pela incapacidade de obter visto na Venezuela. Fomos parados na fronteira e forçados a voltar imediatamente, fazendo assim 24 horas de voo contínuas. Honestamente, eu não quero falar sobre isso, foi  uma situação muito ruim e eu realmente espero não passar esse tipo de coisa novamente. Enfim, depois voltamos para a América do Sul e também Brasil,  depois de alguns meses, e foi incrível. Agora, nós realmente esperamos voltar no próximo ano com "Candyland". Estamos ansiosos para voltar para o Brasil e América Latina!

RtM: Sonya foi um prazer falar com você, e trazer algumas novidades para seus fãs aqui, e também mostrar um pouco mais sobre você e a banda para os potenciais novos fãs! Sucesso, e nós esperamos vê-los aqui no Brasil em breve!

Sonya: Obrigada pela entrevista pessoal. Hoje estou realmente feliz, porque em poucos dias haverá o lançamento oficial do "Candyland" (N. do R.: o álbum foi lançado dia 14/10, e a entrevista realizada em 12/10). Eu sei que esta entrevista será publicada após isso, mas eu quero compartilhar com vocês meus sentimentos ... nós trabalhamos duro 3 anos para realizar este álbum e, finalmente, aqui estamos nós!

RtM: Hello Sonya, thank you for giving us the opportunity to talk about the new album, and also bring a little more about you and the band to the public in Brazil, for old fans, and surely new people who will know TDV’s work.

RtM: Let's start with the new album? The band always showed evolution in every new album, bringing new elements, and in "Candyland", we note more electronic elements, for example. What else of new  elements would you say you add on the new album? What may surprise fans?

Sonya: The new album continues to maintain the melancholic and damned atmosphere of previous works but its sound is more more direct, decisive and violent. "Candyland" is an aggressive album with a strong personality with a powerful guitar sound but  it’s not only that. There are also  moments of calm which envelop the  listener in the arms of an endless  melancholy, a feature that we continue to love totally.

RtM: "Moonlight Waltz" was my favorite so far, but "Candyland" is very close to take its place! It is difficult for an artist make comparisons between your albums, but analyzing in terms of sound, composition and production, you would say "Candyland" can become the most successful album, and considered the apex of the band so far?

Sonya: Yes, it is really difficult to compare two different album like "Moonlight Waltz" and "Candyland".I think thay are just different cause different is the inspiration that drove us to arrange it and different are people that worked on it. Our producer Christian Ice and me, together with the band,  worked hard everyday on "Candyland" after our split with Fabian, who decided to leave the band to follow his private interest and private life, still keeping a strong friendship with us. So we started from a different point of view, no more from the keyboards atmosphere but from my lyrics, arranging on them and on the rhythm of my words the whole album. So, what came out was a really powerful sound, with great guitar’s riffs , surely different from the previous works, cause different was the attitude and the way of work  but still keeping our style...cause mind and heart are always in the vampiric mood. 

RtM: How surged the idea to approach this issue on Pennhurst Asylum. Where did you get the sources to research the story more deeply?

Sonya: I have always had a particular interest for interesting and scary stories, about mysterious and abandoned places and about human madness and diseases. Some years ago I saw a documentary about  a place that I knew before, that story was unbelievable, the story of Pennhurst  Asylum and I was shocked once again to listen to that real  story. At that precise moment I decided the album title and  the mood of the whole album.. i decided to give back the voice to all people that suffers for their mental problems..that are closed in their own words...in their mind..forever lost.

RtM: I would like you to tell us a little more about the lyrical concept.

Sonya: In details, the name of the new album is inspired by a Pennhurst room, different from all others, with colored walls and bars on the windows. A room described as hell on earth by the inpatients of that  infamous asylum, where for decades adults and children with severe mental problems where hidden away from the public eye. 

A sad but alas true story, and the patients themselves renamed that room - with its brightly colored walls from which nobody could leave - Candyland.

Candyland is a journey through the corridors of the asylum, through the dread of those who - locked away inside the bulwarks of Pennhurst -  were left to live in the lone company of their deepest and most harrowing fears, told through their words, accompanied by their cry of desperation.

Never to be understood. Never to be free. Never to be truly alive.

RtM: At first impressions, when the album title was released, and the allusion to the Asylum Pennhurst, I thought it is a concept album about the events there, but I saw then that there are other issues, such as "Resurrection Mary" for example, which deals with an urban legend from Chicago. The themes of the lyrics have any specific connection? I see that there are many implicit things in the songs.

Sonya: It was surely my strongest inspiration for this album but it was not the only one.

"Candyland" is a journey inside human fears... we all have something that scares us ....that we cannot fight because, at the end,  it is part of us...something linked with our child fears, it is our dark half that screams...and sometimes we cannot control it...and we have to walk outside..in the dark side of the world, outside this society....every song has it’s own story, its own obsession....I go from human fears to licterature, the dark side of licterature such as  the "Masque of the Red Death" of E.A.Poe ("Seventh Room"), to Coleridge. “Opium shades” is my homage to Coleridge...I lost in his opium delirium while he was writing his Kubla Khan..

"Resurrection Mary"  for examples is inspired by a real ghost story of Chicago area. Since the 1930s, several men driving northeast along Archer Avenue between the Willowbrook Ballroom and Resurrection Cemetery have reported picking up a young female hitchhiker. This young woman is dressed somewhat formally in a white party dress, and is said to have light blond hair and blue eyes. she wears a thin shawl, dancing shoes, carries a small clutch purse. When the driver nears the Resurrection Cemetery, the young woman asks to be let out, whereupon she disappears into the cemetery...Each song has its own story...a really dark story..

RtM: Two of our favorite, besides the title track, are "Panasomnia" which has a very vibrant pace, and "Pierrot Lunaire,", and like "Candyland", has a more tense atmosphere, heavier, highlighting the beautiful melodies on guitar, and also your vocals, sometimes sensual, sometimes with operatic lines as well. I would like you to comment a bit more about these songs.

Sonya: I’m happy that you love these songs…they represent the gothic side of this album.

"Candyland" was the first song we arranged for the new album, everything started from there…

the song is about that damn  room seen through the eyes of a child ... a child who has been abandoned by her mother in that awful place and that, year after year, has seen other children die around her.. that world of pain and colored walls becomesmaller day by day ..the walls seemed to gather around her because the girl had grown up ... but no one could escape from Pennhurst.., even she.

"Pierrot Lunaire" is a deeply sad song and tells the story of a pierrot who would like to give a smile to the people around him, but because he is different from all others, having that so amazing  sadness inside his soul, the normal people ignore him... leaving him alone..but he wants to give himself to the world, and he decide to  rip his heart  from his chest..painting  a smile on his face with his blood... but people run  away screaming…

"Parasomnia" is a smash on your face, fast and crazy… the song is about a man who is afraid to fall asleep because in his nightmares someone tries to kill him, he's in a room of the mental hospital and draws crosses on the wall to mark the time and the passing of the days...without never sleep. Parasomnia is the night terror, the unconscious fear..

RtM: "Seventh Room" is also a song that I would like you to tell us more about, including on the participation of Fernando Ribeiro.

Sonya: I always loved Moonspell , they are a great band. Fernando has a great voice and he is an amazing frontman, so I decided to contact him. Fernando is really a kind person and a real professionist. He was happy about this new collaboration, as all the great artist he loves to share and to try new thing with music, and he did an excellent job sending me a so nice video about him recording "Seventh Room" track. A nice surprise. It’s a great honour and pleasure having his voice on our last work.  About the song, it is ispired by the Masque of the Red Death of E.A.Poe.

RtM: And about the visual, and more theatrical elements, for the tour of this new album, what are you  preparing?

Sonya: We are working on it, I'd like to make a long video to be projected on stage during the concert with strong images and also other stuff  I have in my mind.. but, let’s see! I hope you will see our new show soon.

RtM: Besides Gothic Metal, the style of the band normally is referred as "Vampiric Metal", including cited as the creator of this style. What do you think about this tag? Tags and subgenres are more negative or positive?

Sonya: I think tags help people to find things they like. It is not bad . Actually I’m just learning to use them on our social!! I’m not that good and I’m still trying to understand how they work!

 It is like a too tight dress that we try to put ourselves necessarily ..but the reality is that you can not describe the music in one word or in a tag. behind every band there are ideas, people, different influences and years of work

RtM: And your interest and connection with the theme of vampirism? How did  surge your interest in it, and also the opportunity to use this theme in a band?

Sonya: I have always been interested in gothic novels , occultism, vampirism and everything  from the dark side of the world and from  the invisible world, since I was very small. When I entered the band I found people who shared the same interests and it was perfect. there were  no coincidences. Coincidences do not exist.This was the fate. So I used the things I love to write my lyrics , inspired by licterature, art, poems, esoterism..

RtM: When you became the only singer of the group, the band ended up taking a new direction in terms of sound, you saw as a need to raise the band to another level, or was it a natural evolution of what was happening? Could you tell us more about how this transition was at the time?

Sonya: That was definitely been a very important moment in our career.  after our split with our former singer we decided to take two different ways.We have decided to go on with a more gothic metal sound, closer to our attitudes and our personality. That was a moment of  a great change for our band. At the beginning we looked for a new  male singer, then the band asked me to become the only singer of the band. they said it was the best choice at all.  It was an unforgettable moment, inside of me I had conflicting emotions, on the one hand I was very happy and grateful to the band for giving me that trust, on the other hand I was afraid, afraid to face that important change, I was afraid to fail. But It was been so natural instead, I could freely express myself in the lyrics and in music and we are here, after many important albums, ready for the release of "Candyland". I’m proud of my band .

RtM: The Theatres des Vampires, was also developing a more accurate and scenic visuals, and you sure are largely responsible. I'd like you to tell us more about it, these scenic and theatrical elements you use, you studied acting as well? And how it was emerging  your very characteristic manner of dress, and thus incorporating the band these theatrical elements?

Sonya: I never studied acting but I was for many years a classical dancer. I know the stage well, the first time I got on stage I was 5 years old. dance has taught me to express myself with the body, with movement, with the facial expression.. about clothes I have my talented fashion designer, Katja, from DIKTATOR FASHION LAB. Besides being a dear friend of mine , Katja is really a talented designer, the best at all,  and she knows every millimeter of my body and every song of Theatres Des Vampires... she knows my personality and she knows how to manages to create for me the perfect outfit, giving me the chance to express myself totally  and to represent my music in the best vampiric way!

RtM: And to keep all this energy on stage, as well your characteristic sensuality, what precautions you take to keep your fitness and beauty? Well, being a vampire, I believe it is easy to remain always beautiful and full of energy! He he

Sonya: To be forever young you have to really work hard instead! He he

I love to take care about myself, I always go to the gym cause I’m a very sporty person and it’s so good for my body and my soul. It ias important for my equilibrium otherwise a become too nervous probably.. I love trekking, skiing and doing all the sports that came in your mind...even surfing..but  I'm not that good in this  ... indeed I am always a vampire!

RtM: And your expectations about the future?

Sonya: I hope I can continue what I'm already doing, I am grateful and proud of what we reached today, and I want to  thank all the people and fans who believe in us, if we are here today to do this interview, with a new album,  is only because of you all. I hope to go on in the best way , spreading our music all around the world.

RtM: Groups of 70’s, like Alice Cooper and Kiss raised to another level this question to turn a rock show into a spectacle, and since then always appear interesting representatives, like TDV, King Diamond, Rammstein, Ghost and also your fellow Deathless Legacy . How do you see this scenario today? What younger bands do you think have incorporated best this question to give something more to the audience?

Sonya: I think that every band has its own personality and must express it as they prefer. There are bands that love to have a great visual effect and other bands that focus  on the music without caring much about the rest, , both of which are perfect. everyone has to do what he feels and what he thinks and always being himself. for us visual is a very important part cause it is part of us, of our way of being, of what we want to convey to our audience. We want to embrace our fans in a kind of amazing nightmare.

I love all the bands you named and I love their shows. I think today taking care about the image and the music is important. But most important thing is to have something to say, a personality and a great sound.

RtM: TDV already have  22 years of career, What a general report do you make these more than two decades? And the future? I believe that we will have many decades of Theatres Des Vampires ahead.

Sonya: honestly we did not realize that all these years have passed !!! We have certainly seen many changes in our band, both as line up like that musical evolution but honestly our resources and energy will never run out, I personally am already thinking about the nextalbum, about which issues will inspire me, to create new lyrics... I love to start everything from the beginning once again...this is a bloody train that never stops!!

RtM: You're also a person engaged in social projects, I would like to tell us a little about.

Sonya: Helping those who are less fortunate than us is very important and gives a different meaning to life. We realize that real life is another, it is different, it is made of thousands of little things that,  in our selfishness , we can not even see in this society. we were born in the lucky part of the world even if we cry every day and we are never satisfied .I have seen many poor countries, I have seen children rummaging in a big garbage dump in Nicaragua , searching for  food and looking for objects to sell, I saw destroyed countries like Nepal after the earthquake that foundations like jay nepal, of which I am part, are trying to help day by day working with nepali people, with their hands in the mud to help those people.

Rtm: And i would to know your opinion about the society and human being nowadays.

Sonya: I think there are lot of amazing people all around, I’ve been so lucky cause I met many of them..what scare me lot of is probably the new generation...they have no idea about the world, the music, the life itself..they just follow new trends without believing in something.But not all of them are the same. I know many youg people that are really smart , and many of them follow Theatres des Vampires, great guys! Proud of you!

RtM: And when you're not involved in musical projects, what you like to do in your leisure time? Reading, travel, cinema?

Sonya: I love movies but I hate going to cinema...and I never go! I hate to sit close to people I don’t know cause for me, watching a movie, is a relaxing moment, so I prefer to do in in my house, with my friends and lot of beers...and blood! The thing I like most is travelling and visiting different countries everytime but a beer with friends is one of the best thing at all. friends and family are really important for me.

RtM: And a tour here on South America? We hope that this time be realized, because in 2012, unfortunately you have been prevented from landing in Venezuela, affecting the entire tour here in South America! Did you received some explanation for such an attitude of the authorities of that country?

Sonya: Unfortunately, the cancellation of the tour was caused by the inability to get in venezuela. we were stopped at the border and forced immediately to turn back doing so 24 hours of  flight. Honestly I do not want to talk about it, it was been such a bad situation and I really hope to not see these  kind of things again. Anyway, after that we came again to South America and in Brazil too after some months and it was amazing. Now, we really hope to come back next year with our new album candyland. We’re looking forward to come back to Brazil and Latino America!

RtM: Sonya was a pleasure talking with you, and bring some news to your fans here, and show a little more about you and the band for potential new fans! Success, and we hope to see you here in Brazil soon!

Sonya: Thanx guys for your interview. Today I’m really happy cause in a couple of days there will be the official release of Candyland . I know this interview will be published after it but I want to share with you my feelings…we worked hard 3 years to do it and finally, here we are!
