Vocalista do Judas Priest aos 28 anos. Somente isso já nos mostra a força que o então jovem Tim “Ripper” Owens já tinha nos anos 90, quando substituiu Rob Halford na lendária banda Judas Priest, banda que é um dos pilares criadores do Heavy Metal.

Sua história de vida rendeu o filme “Rockstar” e sua passagem pela banda inglesa rendeu 2 gradnes discos. A saída acabou acontecendo para a volta de Halford, mas a ascensão de Owens continuou ao montar o Beyond Fear e aceitar o convite para cantar no Iced Earth.

Também foram 2 discos de estúdio e turnês, sua saída do Iced Earth culminou com trabalhos com a lenda da guitarra Ygwie Malmsteen, partindo também para projetos e bandas, como Hail! e Dio Disciples.

Tim Owens é uma lenda viva. O atual vocalista do Charred Walls of the Damned, Hail! e Dio Disciples há muito é considerado um dos maiores vocalistas de todo os tempos e, muito requisitado em bandas, projetos, programas e entrevistas, concedeu um tempo para entrevista exclusiva ao Road to Metal.

À véspera de iniciar nova turnê, Tim respondeu algumas perguntas, sem papas na língua e enrolação (você notará nas respostas). Demos uma geral na carreira do vocalista que promete: virá ao Brasil não apenas com o Dio Disciples (show no Metal Open Air, em abril), mas também com carreira solo e mais surpresas.

RTM: Você tem se dedicado a várias atividades, desde gravando álbuns com o Charred Walls of the Damned, está cantando com o Dio Disciples e até mesmo possui um bar próprio onde se apresenta. Como organizar a agenda para as turnês e quando teremos uma turnê mundial?

TR: É realmente difícil... Eu estou um pouco ocupado, mas eu acho que é uma coisa boa! Eu gosto de lidar com tudo isso eu mesmo... Quer dizer, principalmente em turnê solo e já é bastante.

RTM: O Charred Walls of the Damned é o novo projeto de vida do Richard Christy e ele revelou em entrevistas de que não abria mão de tê-lo como vocalista. Como está sendo a experiência de voltar a tocar com Richard seu ex-companheiro de Iced Earth e o talentoso Steve Di’orgio, nessa nova empreitada?

TR: É ótimo... Eu e Richard somos amigos há muito tempo, ele é um cara ótimo e é também um incrível baterista e compositor. Nunca havia trabalhado com Steve até o Charred Walls of the Damned... Wow, ele é incrível, ele é matador!

RTM: “Cold Winds On Timeless Days” é um disco ainda mais melódico que seu antecessor que, de cara, mostrou a banda tocando rápido, pesado, mas com muita melodia, especialmente a partir dos seus vocais. A banda pretende continuar com esse direcionamento nos próximos lançamentos e, se sim, podemos esperar novos discos da banda?

TR: Eu não acho que só eu fui assim... O Richard compôs e foi assim que o disco saiu... Eu fui ao estúdio e cantei e cantei e cantei e, ao final do dia... BAM!

RTM: A morte de Dio talvez seja a maior perda da história do Heavy Metal. O Dio Disciples surgiu como uma forma de prestar uma homenagem e mostrar para o mundo uma pequena parcela de grandes músicos que foram influenciados por ele e sua música, seja aonde for que ele tenha cantado. Como tem sido essa experiência de tocar com grandes músicos os grandes clássicos de Dio?

TR: Dio foi e é o melhor... Eu sinto falta dele, mas ele sempre estará comigo... Sempre.

RTM: Ainda em relação a Dio, você fez uma apresentação especial em seu bar cantando inúmeras músicas do vocalista, desde o Rainbow. Fica claro que você gosta de cantar aquelas canções, mas qual delas você poderia citar que lhe causa maior emoção, que lhe lembra algo importante a partir da mensagem que ela lhe passa?

TR: Sim... Cada vez que eu canto Ronnie mexe muito com meu emocional... Se você me ver cantando no Dio Disciples irá se surpreender... Confira no Youtube... É DE CORAÇÃO.

RTM: Você esteve no Brasil, pela última vez, divulgando seu disco solo. Recentemente o Dio Disciples foi confirmado como uma das atrações do Metal open Air, já considerado como o maior evento destinado ao Metal que o Brasil já teve. Quais são os planos para essa vinda ao Brasil com a banda e haverá possibilidade de mais shows pelo país? E quanto ao Charred Walls of the Damned, poderemos vê-los no Brasil em breve?

TR: Com o Charred Walls of the Damned não temos nada em mente, mas eu tenho a Hail!, carreira solo e também o Dio Disciples... Vai ser um bom ano para todos vocês... LOL

RTM: Voltando um pouco ao passado, você gravou um grande álbum com a banda Winter’s Bane em 1993, que revelou você ao mundo, principalmente pelas características vocais agudas e potentes, houve alguns rumores após sua saída do Iced Earth de que a banda retornaria a ativa, o que temos de verdade nestes rumores?

TR: Sim foi um grande cd... Nada comparado como eu canto agora... Vocalmente estou bem melhor agora... Eu ouvi o álbum esses tempos e meio que quis rir... Eu quero dizer, sim eu cantava notas altas, mas o alcance e a substância que tenho agora é léguas acima daquela época... Eu gostaria de gravá-lo novamente... Eu queria tentar fazer a banda novamente, mas NÃO houve interesse dos outros músicos... Estranho, mas essa é a verdade.

RTM: Muitos dizem que o filme Rock Star foi baseado em sua historia na entrada para o Judas Priest, devido você ter tido por anos junto com a Winter’s Bane uma banda cover de Judas chamada British Steel, o que você acha deste filme? Realmente tem haver com sua historia de entrada ao Judas Priest?

TR: Sim, foi! Não é a história do Judas Priest... Mas sim a minha história... Eu acho que foi aí que os problemas começaram!

RTM: Em 2003 quando você deixou os vocais do Judas, logo em seguida você assumiria mais um posto importante dentro do Heavy Metal, sendo o substituto de Matt Barlow no Iced Earth. Como foi a sua entrada para banda? E como foi para você assumir os vocais de uma banda com estilo diferente do seu?

TR: Eu apenas canto… qualquer banda que eu estou eu apenas canto… John me convidou para entrar na banda [N.T: John Schaffer, da banda Iced Earth] e eu disse “claro”, talvez eu tenha dito isso muito rápido, todos ao meu redor não estavam interessados nisso, empresário do Judas Priest e outros músicos e tal, mas eu fiz a escolha certa e fiz alguma grande música.

RTM: Você lançou dois excelentes álbuns com o Iced Earth “The Glorious Burden” em 2004 e “Framing Armageddon” em 2007, sendo o último de grande sucesso entre a critica e os fãs, mas no meio deste sucesso todo é anunciada sua saída e a volta de Matt Barlow, sua saída foi planejada? Ou você, assim como os fãs, foi pego de surpresa?

TR: Não, eu precisava sair... Eu precisava sair para fazer os meus projetos, por mim mesmo. Foi uma boa passagem e me diverti bastante, mas não era o mesmo tempo que eu tinha no Judas Priest, e não é como agora, agora é a melhor época da minha vida... Mas o Iced Earth ainda era grande e me ensinou algumas coisas para minha carreira de como fazer e como não fazer algumas coisas... lol

RTM: Em 2009 você estreou com seu álbum solo “Play My Game”. Devido aos seus inúmeros projetos e participações, podemos esperar um novo álbum solo de Tim Owens?

TR: Não tenho certeza... Eu adoraria fazer outro álbum, talvez com uma banda mais estável e não com músicos convidados... Mas é um grande cd... Eu acho que eu vou regravar algumas faixas deste primeiro álbum e fazer algumas coisas do meu jeito e colocar alguns extras nele e lançá-lo para que as pessoas possam comprá-lo... Você sabe que o primeiro álbum nunca foi realmente posto para fora.

RTM: Após essa saída conturbada do Iced Earth, você se tornou um dos vocalistas mais concorridos da cena sendo convidado para vários projetos e integrando a banda de Yngwie Malmsteen. Como surgiu o convite para gravar com o mago da guitarra?

TR: Nós fizemos uma versão de Mr. Crowley [N. E.: clássico de Ozzy Osbourne] e o resultado final ficou muito legal... Nós conversamos um pouco e cai de cabeça na ideia... Tipo de uma coisa legal... Eu realmente poder aparecer e dar o meu melhor... Você sabe que eu tenho um monte de outras coisas na minha carreira que me deixa sempre ocupado... Mas é divertido ser requisitado!

RTM: O que podemos esperar de Tim “Ripper” Owens para 2012?

TR: Um monte de coisas... Shows com o Yngwie na Rússia em fevereiro, então Hail! na América do Sul em fevereiro/março, Dio Disciples na América do Sul e Bulgária, em seguida, turnê solo no México e na Austrália em maio... Turnê solo na Europa em setembro/outubro, turnê solo na América do Sul em novembro, hahaha ocupado e para finalizar vamos começar as gravações do novo álbum do Beyond Fear... Realmente louco!

RTM: Tim, agradecemos pela atenção e deixe um recado aos seus fãs do Road To Metal que aguardam ansiosamente por sua volta ao Brasil.

Interview With the Scream Machine Tim "Ripper" Owens

Tim Owens gave us a brief interview. In this great interview, the former lead singer of Judas Priest and Iced Earth talked about many things involving his old band, commented on the Charred Walls of the Damned and Dio Disciples, and plans for 2012. See below!

Road to Metal:  You have been devoted to various activities, from recording albums with Charred Walls of the Damned, singing with the Dio Disciples and even has its own bar where he appears. How to organize the agenda for the tours and when we have a world tour?

Tim Owens: It is real hard..I am a bit too busy but I guess that is a good thing! I like to handle it all myself as well..I mean I tour mainly solo and it is a lot

RtM: The Charred Walls of the Damned is the new project of Richard Christy life and he revealed in interviews that would not give to have him as a vocalist. How is the experience of returning to play with Richard, his former comrade Iced Earth and Steve Di'orgio, this new venture?

Tim Owens: It is great… I mean Richard and I have been friends for a long time now, he is a great guy to be around and an amazing drummer and song writer. I have never worked with Steve until CWOTD… Wow… he is amazing, he just kills it!!

RtM: "Cold Winds On Days Timeless" is more melodic album than its predecessor that face, saw the band playing fast, heavy, but with a lot of melody, especially from his vocals. The band intends to continue with this direction in the next release and if so, we can expect new albums from the band?

Tim Owens: I don’t think it just went that way… Richard just wrote and that is how it came out… I went in the studio and sang and sang and sang and at the end of the day… BAM!

RtM: The death of Dio is perhaps the greatest loss in the history of Heavy Metal. The Dio Disciples originated as a way to pay tribute and show the world a small portion of great musicians who were influenced by him and his music, where ever it is that he has sung. How has that experience been of great musicians playing with the great classics of Dio?

Tim Owens: Dio was and is the best… I miss him but he will always be with me… always.

RtM: In connection with Dio, you made a special presentation at his bar singer singing many songs from the Rainbow. Clearly you like to sing those songs, but which you can recite it causes more emotion, something important that you remember from the message that she is?

Tim Owens: Yea… singing Ronnie is very emotional… if you all see me in Dio Disciples it will blow you away… check it out on Youtube… FROM THE HEART.

RtM: You've been in Brazil for the last time, releasing his solo album.  Was recently the Dio Disciples confirmed as one of the attractions of Metal Open Air, already considered the biggest event for the metal that Brazil has ever had. What are the plans for this trip to Brazil with the band and will be able to play more shows across the country? What about the Charred Walls of the Damned, we see them in Brazil soon?

Tim Owens: Nothing with Charred walls, but I have Hail, SOLO and with Dio Disciple..gonna be a good year for you all…LOL

RtM: Going back a bit to the past, you recorded a great album with the band Winter's Bane in 1993, which showed you the world, especially the vocal characteristics of acute and powerful, there was some talk after his departure from Iced Earth that the band would return to active we have the truth in these rumors?

Tim Owens: Yea it was a great cd… nothing like I sing now… vocally I am WAY, WAY better now… I listen to it and kinda laugh… I mean yea I sing High notes but the range and substance I have now is leagues above it... I would love to record it again… I wanted to try and do the band again but there was NO interest from the labels… Strange but that is the truth.

RtM: Many say that the movie Rock Star was based on his history at the entrance to Judas Priest because you have had for years along with the Winter's Bane a cover band called British Steel Judas, what do you think of this movie? It really has to do with its history of admission to Judas Priest?

Tim Owens: Yes it was!  And not the history of Judas Priest… this history of me… I think that is where the problem was!

RtM: In 2003 when you left the vocals of Judas, soon after you assume a more important position in the Heavy Metal, and the replacement of Matt Barlow in Iced Earth. How was your entry for the band? And how did you take the vocals for a band with his different style?

Tim Owens: I just sing… any band I’m in I just sing… John asked me to join and I said sure thing, maybe I said it to fast, all around me wasn’t keen on it, JP’s management, and other musicians and others, but I made the right choice and made some great music!!

RtM: You released two excellent albums with Iced Earth "The Glorious Burden" in 2004 and "Framing Armageddon" in 2007, the latter being of great success among critics and fans, but amid all this success is announced his departure and the return of Matt Barlow, his departure was planned? Or you, as fans, was caught by surprise?

Tim Owens: No, I needed out.. I needed to do stuff, for myself and finically! It was a good ride and I had fun, but it wasn’t the same as my time in Judas Priest, it just missed some kind of spark… and it isn’t like now, right now is the best time in my life… But Iced Earth was still great and it taught me somethings to do and something not to do… lol

RtM: In 2009 you debuted with his solo album "Play My Game". Due to its numerous projects and investments, we can expect a new solo album from Owens?

Tim Owens: No sure.. I would love to do another, maybe with a more stable band and not as many guest… but it is a great cd… I think I am gonna re record it and do somethings my way and put some extras on it and get it out there so people can buy it… you know the first one was never really put out.

RtM: You became one of the busiest vocalists in the scene being invited to various projects and integrating the band Yngwie Malmsteen. How did the invitation to record with guitar wizard?

Tim Owens: We did a tune Mr Crowley together and I think it got the wheels turning…we talked and I jumped on it..kind of a cool thing..I really just show up and do it if I can..You know I gotta a lot of other things on my plate so I can always do it..but It is fun

RtM:: What can we expect from Tim "Ripper" Owens in 2012?

Tim Owens: A lot… Yngwie shows in Russia in Feb (I leave tomorrow) Then Hail in South America in Feb/March Then Dio Disciples in South America and Bulgaria, then Solo in Mexico, then Solo tour in Australia in May… then Solo tour in Europe in Sept/oct… then Solo tour in South America in Nov… hahaha Busy. Recording Beyond Fear CD and Tred CD...crazy…
