Circle II Circle: Novos Elementos, Mas com Conexão ao Passado

 

Contatei Zak Stevens para uma entrevista para o Road to Metal, ao final de 2014, e o vocalista estava dando uma pausa nos trabalhos do novo álbum do Circle II Circle ("Reign of Darkness", lançado ano passado), na verdade estava em fase de mixagem, então, além de falar sobre as notícias do show de reunião do Savatage no Wacken 2015, lhe perguntei sobre esse novo trabalho do CIIC, e bastante empolgado com as novas músicas, ele nos deu algumas pistas a respeito da sonoridade, dizendo que o álbum seria mais dark e progressivo, inclusive falou que James Murphy estava envolvido no processo, além de contar (não pudemos divulgar na época, claro) que Bill Hudson e Marcelo Moreira estariam no line-up. Então, antes de tecer minha opinião sobre o trabalho, reproduzo a seguir algumas das palavras de Zak sobre o álbum que estava finalizando:

"O novo álbum é bastante diferente dos dois primeiros, mas há alguns poucos elementos que remetem aos álbuns anteriores e mantém um vínculo à sonoridade tradicional do CIIC que o pessoal espera. O novo álbum traz uma sonoridade muito moderna em termos de Metal Progressivo, para a qual vínhamos migrando nos últimos anos enquanto o escrevíamos."

"Ambos, as canções e a mixagem, são muito modernas comparadas ao passado. Eu realmente quero evoluir bastante com relação à sonoridade passada de certa forma, porque, com esse álbum, nós queremos mais em todos os aspectos de nossas carreiras."

"Como você verá, este é um álbum muito emocionante e diferente para o Circle II Circle. Ele representa uma transformação musical para nós de muitas maneiras. O estilo musical do álbum é algo que sempre tivemos em nós, mas nós esperamos até agora para realmente mostrar isso. Havia pequenas pistas do que está por vir em nosso último álbum, "Seasons Will Fall", mas nada como as surpresas inesperadas que vocês irão ouvir."

Lançado no exterior em outubro do ano passado, via earMusic, "Reign of Darkness" realmente entrega bastante do que Zak prometeu, é uma transformação, uma evolução musical da banda, sonoridade mais dark e progressiva, porém, traz conexão à características já conhecidas do Circle II Circle e, logicamente, do próprio Zak, como seus vocais inconfundíveis e nuances que podemos perceber nas composições, mas nada muito arriscado e drástico em termos de mudança.

A abertura instrumental com "Over-Underture", seguida de "Victim of the Night", permitem ao ouvinte identificar a banda, com peso e melodia, clima dark, cortesia principalmente dos teclados, e algo que lembra também os trabalhos do vocalista no Savatage, principalmente "Wake of Magellan" (que aliás, ele cita como sua melhor performance em um álbum do Savatage) e "Dead Winter Dead", ou seja, boas escolhas para apresentar o álbum, trazendo bastante do trabalho tradicional de Zak, mas já com novidades.

"Untold Dreams", traz riffs marcantes, principalmente no refrão, e aqui se destacam mais as guitarras, assim como em "It's All Over", que mais uma vez faz conexão com o Savatage, num riff com características bem semelhantes aos do grande Criss Oliva.

"One More Day" dá uma amornada, mas é correta, mantendo o peso e a pegada, e "Ghost of the Devil" procura trazer mais peso, seguindo por alguns caminhos diferentes; já "Somewhere" eleva novamente o pique, transitando por partes mais pesadas e meio tempo, por outras mais melodiosas, um refrão marcante, e riffs e climas que remetem novamente às características conhecidas em trabalhos do vocalista no Savatage e no próprio CIIC, particularmente, sendo fã, me agradou bastante essas faixas que trouxeram mais peso sim, mas uma conexão ainda forte com o que ele fez no Savatage.

"Deep Within" soa bem dramática e dark, destacando o trabalho vocal de Zak, que está muito bem em todo o álbum, fazendo que, mesmo em momentos de músicas com menos brilho, você não perca o interesse; "Taken Away" é também bastante pesada e dark, com os teclados aqui se destacando novamente, além de alguns riffs bem "Savatage" em algumas partes e trechos mais progressivos.

"Sinister Love" possui uma sonoridade mais moderna nos timbres de guitarra, bem pesada, mas faltou aquele "gancho"; "Solitary Rain" encerra o álbum, e é mais uma que faz uma conexão bem clara ao trabalho tradicional de Zak. Uma "Power Ballad", que inicia com voz e teclados, num estilo bem Savatage mesmo, inclusive com aqueles flertes com musica clássica, embora realmente um pouco mais dark e progressivo. Um dos destaques, ao lado de "Victim of the Night".

Um álbum superior aos últimos trabalhos, trazendo algo novo, mais peso, mas também com muitas conexões com o trabalho de Zak no Savatage e no próprio Circle II Circle, mostrando uma banda e um Zak Stevens renovados. Vai agradar aos fãs do vocalista, que sempre esperam mais dele, e partir de "Reign of Darkness", acredito que a carreira da banda vai retomar um rumo ascendente, e como o próprio Zak nos disse: "O melhor ainda está por vir".

Entrevista: Zak Stevens (Savatage, Circle II Circle) - "O Melhor Ainda Está Por Vir"

2015 vem com muitas expectativas para Zak Stevens e todos os fãs de seu trabalho,  pois, além de um novo álbum e outras novidades no Circle II Circle, há a expectativa da "Savatage Reunion", anunciada como uma das grandes atrações para o Wacken deste ano, renovando esperanças de mais shows da banda, e quem sabe um retorno definitivo. Conversamos com Zak, que está mixando o novo álbum do Circle II Circle, com a mão de James Murphy, segundo ele, um nome ideal para a sonoridade que pretende, para falar dessas expectativas, da carreira, cenário musical, a relação com o Brasil e muito mais, e segundo Zak, suas expectativas continuam altas, e o melhor momento de sua carreira ainda está por vir!

RtM: Olá Zak,  antes de tudo obrigado pela sua atenção. Você nos disse que estava no estúdio mixando o novo álbum do Circle II Circle. Aproveitando a oportunidade, poderia nos contar um pouco sobre esse novo trabalho?

Zak Stevens: Na verdade, estamos ainda mixando o novo álbum do CIIC. Estamos quase terminando. Como você verá, este é um álbum muito emocionante e diferente para o Circle II Circe. Ele representa uma transformação musical para nós de muitas maneiras. O estilo musical do álbum é algo que sempre tivemos em nós, mas nós esperamos até agora para realmente mostrar isso. Havia pequenas pistas do que está por vir em nosso último álbum, "Seasons Will Fall", mas nada como as surpresas inesperadas que vocês irão ouvir. Vocês irão ver o que quero dizer quando o novo álbum for lançado na próxima primavera (Outono no Brasil).

RtM: Quais músicas você acredita que serão destaques no álbum? Já existe uma data fixa para o lançamento?

Zak: Eu não posso falar sobre os títulos reais das músicas ou o título do álbum agora porque nós não apresentamos o álbum a nossa gravadora o suficiente ainda. Ele deve ser lançado em algum dia por volta de Março ou Abril de 2015.

RtM: Nos deixou curiosos, mais alguma coisa que você pode falar sobre a sonoridade do novo álbum? Muitos fãs de vocês apontam para os dois primeiros álbuns, como os melhores da banda. O que você espera deste novo álbum?

Z: O novo álbum é bastante diferente dos dois primeiros, conforme eu mencionei, mas há alguns poucos elementos que remetem aos álbuns anteriores e mantém um vínculo à sonoridade tradicional do CIIC que o pessoal espera. O novo álbum traz uma sonoridade muito moderna em termos de Metal Progressivo, para a qual vínhamos migrando nos últimos anos enquanto o escrevíamos. 

Ambos, as canções e a mixagem, são muito modernas comparadas ao passado. Eu realmente quero evoluir bastante com relação à sonoridade passada de certa forma, porque, com esse álbum, nós queremos mais em todos os aspectos de nossas carreiras. Se continuássemos a ir pelo caminho que sempre fomos, nós somente teríamos o que sempre tivemos. Não que os álbuns anteriores não tenham sido bons para nós, mas era o momento certo pra ir em frente e criar uma grande adição à nossa arte e um sólido  futuro para a banda com esse novo álbum.

RtM: Existe um convidado especial no álbum? E alguns outra surpresa ou edição especial para os fãs?

Z: Sim, há convidados no álbum, mas eles são artistas que você pode nunca ter ouvido falar até agora. Decidimos trazer alguns convidados nos vocais de apoio e também temos algumas outras surpresas que provavelmente serão divertidas. Mas, mais uma vez, é um pouco cedo demais para falar sobre isso agora, em detalhes, mas todo mundo vai descobrir em breve.

RtM: No Savatage, você fez vários álbuns no formato conceitual. E sobre o Circle II Circle, você pensa em fazer algo no mesmo estilo, a” Opera Rock”, por exemplo?

Z: Até este ponto não fizemos um álbum de "ópera rock". Provavelmente porque vindo do Savatage, onde eu estive sempre muito próximos disto em álbuns como "Dead Winter Dead" e "Wake of Magellan",  e claro, a partir de uma perspectiva de "álbum conceitual" como um todo. O CIIC na verdade lançou dois álbuns conceituais, "Burden of Truth" e "Consequence of Power", mas o próximo trabalho não é um álbum "conceitual”. Na verdade, muitos dos temas do novo álbum refletem um assunto semelhante, o que tem sido o caso com vários CDs do CIIC que não são "conceituais" propriamente ditos.

RtM: Você fizeram uma promoção muito legal, chegando as 60.000 visualizações do vídeo "Diamond Blade" no youtube, e eu vejo que você está sempre interagindo com os fãs nas redes sociais, nos seus shows, e etc .... Isso me lembrou que não são todos que são assim, e muitas pessoas veem tudo como uma oportunidade de negócio. Por exemplo, uma controvérsia é o  "Meet and Greet” pago, e alguns artistas cobram valores elevados para que os fãs tenham um contato, possam tirar fotos, pegar autógrafos. O que você pensa sobre isso?

Z: Sim, nós desfrutamos de toda a interação diária com os nossos adeptos do CIIC e eu pessoalmente respondendo um monte de fãs e e-mails todos os dias. Requer um bom tempo, mas é algo que definitivamente vale a pena. E eu acho que é absolutamente ridículo que as bandas cobrem dinheiro dos fãs apenas para interagir com eles. Isso é algo que nós vemos mais e mais no negócio da música hoje. Penso que a razão pela qual vemos esta tendência é porque quando as bandas começam a ganhar dinheiro, o fator “ganância” rapidamente começa a crescer, e então as bandas começam a cobrar dinheiro para tudo o que pode ser possível ganhar um dólar a mais.

Nós não fazemos isso no CIIC. Nós nem sequer cobramos para realizar “meet and greet” ou para membros de fã-clube. Nós fazemos dinheiro criando álbuns, fazendo turnês e com a venda de nossos produtos. Eu particularmente vejo muito isso de bandas que tiveram sucesso no passado, e como eles ainda estão tentando retornar e ter um ganho melhor nesse “jogo”, mas eles ainda não estão obtendo, então (provavelmente), estão com raiva porque não estão fazendo a quantidade de dinheiro que eles faziam antes, e é ai que eles começar a cobrar os fãs e sobrecarrega-los. Isso não é um bom precedente para se fazer fãs e simpatizantes, em minha opinião.

RtM: Talvez seja uma pergunta difícil de responder, mas qual o álbum do Savatage e qual do Circle II Circle que você aponta como o seu favorito?

Z: Se eu tivesse que fazer uma escolha, eu diria que "Edge of Thorns" e "Handful of Rain" são os meus álbuns favoritos do Savatage, e "Burden of Truth" e "Seasons Will Fall" são meus favoritos do CIIC até agora.

RtM: E na sua opinião, em qual álbum está a sua melhor performance vocal?

Z: Provavelmente "Wake of Magellan" é o meu desempenho geral, meu melhor trabalho vocal para um álbum do Savatage, e "Seasons Will Fall" é o meu melhor desempenho em um álbum CIIC.

RtM: Foi anunciado este ano que Savatage fará um show especial no Wacken 2015! Qual foi sua reação quando percebeu que esta reunião vai acontecer? Como foram as negociações? Eu acredito que você está muito feliz com isso, porque eu me lembro que você sempre demonstrou a vontade do retorno da banda às atividades. Você pode nos contar um pouco mais sobre isso, como será este concerto, set list, os convidados? Todo fã do Savatage neste mundo está sonhando com esse show agora !!

Z: Bem, eu entendo o grande falatório e emoção em torno do show “Reunion”, e eu absolutamente espero para estar lá cantando, é claro. Quando eu ouvi pela primeira vez sobre isso fiquei surpreso que demorou tanto tempo para que ocorresse uma decisão de ter este concerto. Infelizmente, não temos qualquer informação sobre o que vai acontecer com a “Reunion” até janeiro. Portanto, não há maiores detalhes sobre qualquer coisa até então. Mas todos os caras do T.S.O. e Savatage estão falando disso agora, e nós estamos apenas tentando fazer da “Savatage Reunion” parte do show da Trans-Siberian Orchestra,  e mostrar o melhor que podemos, para todos os fãs fiéis do Savatage, e que têm apoiado a banda por todos esses anos.

RtM: E Jon, certamente ele deve ter falado com você quando as negociações começaram a surgir? Você sentiu que ele está animado? Recentemente, Chris Caffery também comentou que há uma possibilidade de algo mais do que o concerto Wacken? Mais shows? Novo álbum? Queria falar sobre algo?

Z: Sim Jon e todos os caras falaram comigo sobre o show no Wacken. Tudo ainda está em negociação neste momento. Estou ciente dos comentários de Chris Caffery sobre a "reunião", e Chris e eu sempre concordamos com os sentimentos sobre o Savatage e um eventual retorno às atividade. Então, isso que ele falou não me surpreendeu em nada. Mas, novamente, Chris e eu temos estado de acordo nos mesmos pontos de vista há anos, por isso vamos ter que ver como Jon e Paul O'Neill irão se sentir sobre a possibilidade de continuar o Savatage no futuro. Afinal, eles serão os únicos que tomarão as decisões sobre a "reunião" e os negócios do Savatage e TSO.

RtM: Jon disse várias vezes que Savatage acabou por não ter tido um retorno em termos financeiros, e foi uma das razões que a banda estava encerrando atividades. Você acredita que um retorno da banda pode agora trazer um cenário diferente para vocês? Além disso, eu acho que o trabalho do Savatage, e o legado que a banda está atualmente mais reconhecido, e há muitos novos fãs também.

Z: É claro que concordo que a visibilidade do Savatage aumentou muito por causa do público reconhecer que o Trans-Siberian Orchestra é, na verdade, basicamente, um “Savatage re-configurado". Quando eu estava no Savatage, era uma empresa muito lucrativa na maior parte do tempo e todos da banda foram bem pagos. Então, claramente a banda poderia ser ainda mais bem sucedida, ainda mais agora que o TSO chegou em um nível muito mais elevado nos últimos anos. Durante este período o T.S.O. também elevou o patamar do Circle II Circle para níveis inéditos. Então, do ponto de vista de negócios, por que não fazer a mesma coisa para a banda que iniciou tudo, o Savatage?

RtM: Olhando para trás, alguns anos, poderia relembrar um pouco sobre a sua entrada no Savatage, como foi o início, as suas expectativas, o que esperava conseguir com a banda?

Z: Bem, você está falando de olhar para trás cerca de 20 anos. Quando eu entrei no Savatage, eu era um novo vocalista, inexperiente no negócio da música como um todo. Eu aprendi muito do que sei nos negócios durante o tempo na banda, e também pude assistir ao processo de transformação dela, no que veio a se tornar o TSO. É claro que eu continuo aprimorando minhas habilidades de composição e de produção no CIIC, mas eu devo isso a todos as pessoas que apostaram em mim no Savatage, por me trazer para o negócio e dar-me uma carreira que já dura mais de 20 anos. As minhas expectativas desde o início, eram muito altas, e elas continuam a ser de altas. As altas expectativas chegaram também a um nível pessoal, e sou determinado a fazer a minha carreira durar muito tempo, e eu acredito que os melhores momentos ainda estão por vir.

RtM: E quando você saiu da banda, inclusive não participando do último álbum, "Poets and Madmen"? Hoje em dia, ao olhar para trás, sente-se arrependido de não ter participado desse álbum? E as principais razões para a sua saída?

Z: Não, eu não sinto arrependimento algum. Como você sabe,  esses tipo de coisa acontece todos os dias no mundo da música. Eu não trocaria o tempo que tive fora do Savatage, onde pude passar o tempo com a minha família, e naquele moment,o com a minha filha que era recém-nascida (e mais tarde, com as minhas duas filhas). Foi definitivamente uma saída necessária no momento. Também na mesma época todos nós sabíamos que "Poets" seria o último álbum do Savatage antes do lançamento do TSO.  Assim, num retrospecto, foi tudo feito em bons termos e a separação foi muito amigável. Todos os caras do Savatage sabiam da minha situação no momento, e que eu tinha que ter esse tempo. É por isso que eu tenho hoje um bom relacionamento, tanto com o Savatage, como com o  TSO e seus gestores hoje em dia.

RtM: Você tem um ótimo relacionamento com o Brasil e com os fãs brasileiros, vindo várias vezes para cá, e incluindo também participar no álbum e shows com o Metal Opera Soulspell. Poderia falar sobre essa relação especial com o Brasil e também a sua participação no Soulspell, onde cantou junto com Jon em uma faixa, inclusive (Obs: “Into the Arc of Time)?

Z: Bem, eu definitivamente tenho um caso de amor todo especial com nossos seguidores, fãs e adeptos no Brasil. Eu falo com os nossos fãs brasileiros em nossos meios de comunicação e redes sociais todo dia, e eles vão te dizer o mesmo. Eu também tive brasileiros no CIIC, o que inclui o guitarrista Bill Hudson, e mais nosso artista e web designer João Duarte. Eu amo o Brasil e as pessoas de seu país, eles trazem vibrações muito boas para o que fazemos. É muito óbvio para quem vê as nossas páginas e canais oficiais que realmente gostamos disso. E essa relação aumentará ainda mais, aguardem uma banda ainda mais “brasileira”.

Quanto ao Soulspell, um grande projeto, sendo mais uma das bandas brasileiras e artistas que colaborei em anos anteriores. E, neste momento, tem similaridades com o que será a nossa primeira turnê de divulgação do novo álbum do CIIC no Brasil. As coisas têm sido muito bonitas neste relacionamento do CIIC com o Brasil, e eu vejo isso só melhorar à medida que avançamos para os próximos anos.

RtM: E seus ídolos, influências e referências como cantor? Quem você citaria como principais influências?

Z: Minhas principais influências foram aumentando... The Eagles, Ronnie James Dio (RIP), Geoff Tate, David Coverdale, Rob Halford. Hoje eu também posso citar nomes mais modernos, como os caras do Godsmack, A7X, Chris Daughtry, e Disturbed.

RtM: Quem te encorajou a entrar na música o início, ser um músico profissional? Você sempre quis ser cantor desde o início?

Z: A primeira pessoa a me inspirar na música, eu tinha 8 anos de idade, foi o irmão mais velho do meu melhor amigo na quinta série do ensino fundamental, que me disse um dia que ele ia me tornar um cantor e um baterista. Eu estava um pouco surpreso com isso, mas soou como sinônimo de muita diversão. Então eu comecei a tocar bateria quando eu tinha 9 anos, e fui um baterista profissional por cerca de 35 anos. Eu fiz a transição para frontman, me tornando vocalista quando eu tinha 22 anos, e me tornei um artista da Atlantic Records ao gravar com o Savatage, quando eu tinha 26. Eu sempre quis ser um frontman, mas eu esperei para fazer essa transição, da bateria para o vocal, após terminar a faculdade.

RtM: E a turnê do novo álbum do Circle II Circle? Há contatos para vir para o Brasil?

Z: Sim, nossa primeira turnê do novo álbum do CIIC , deverá ser no Brasil por isso estamos muito ansiosos para que, como sempre retornamos ao seu país e termos momentos excelentes.

RtM: Zak, obrigado por disponibilizar tempo para esta entrevista, foi uma honra, eu, e a maioria dos membros do Road, somos fãs do seu trabalho! Deixo o espaço final para sua mensagem aos fãs brasileiros!

Z: É claro que eu quero dizer obrigado a todos os nossos apoiadores no Brasil, por toda a energia fantástica, todo apoio que nos deram nos últimos sete anos em que estivemos em tour por aí. Nossa pretensão é que tudo fique maior e maior a cada vez que uma turnê brasileira for realizada, e nós ganharemos muitos amigos e grandes companheiros no Brasil. “WE LOVE YOU ALL !!!” Nos vemos em breve !!! Obrigado por tudo Brasil !!...

Interview: Zak Stevens (Circle II Circle, Savatage) - "The Best Times Are Yet to Come"

2015 comes with many expectations for Zak Stevens and all fans of his work, because in addition to a new album and other news in Circle II Circle, there is an expectation about "Savatage Reunion", heralded as one of the great attractions for the Wacken this year, renewing hopes for more band concerts, and maybe a permanent return.

We talked with Zak, who is mixing the new Circle II Circle album, with the hand of James Murphy, he said, an ideal name for the sound he want to the band,  about these expectations, career, music scene, the relationship with Brazil and more, and according to Zak, his expectations remain high, and the best time of his career is yet to come!

RtM: The Day I contacted you for this interview, you were in studio mixing the new Circle II Circle album. Could you tell us a bit about it? Which songs you believe that will be highlights on the album? There is already a release date?

Zak Stevens: We are actually still mixing the new CIIC album.  We are almost finished.  I can't talk about the actual song titles or the album title right now because we haven't submitted the album to our label quite yet.  As you'll see this is a very different and exciting album for CIIC.  It represents a musical transformation for us in many ways.  The musical style of this album is something we always had in us but we have waited until now to really show it.  There were slight hints of what is to come on the new album on our last most recent album "Seasons Will Fall", but nothing like the unexpected surprises you're going to hear.  You'll see what I mean when the new album is released next spring.  It should be released somewhere around March or April of 2015. 

RtM: What about the sound of this new album? Many fans point to the first two albums as the best of the band. What can we expect from this new album?

Z: The new album is a lot different than the first two as I was mentioning, but there are a few elements that resemble the earlier albums and keep it "grounded" to the traditional CIIC sound people have come to expect.  The new album is very modern in terms of the progressive metal sound that we have been migrating to the last few years while writing the album.  Both, the songs and the mix, are very modern compared to the past.  

I really wanted to evolve greatly from the past sound in a way because we want more in every aspect of our careers from this new album.  If we continued to go down the path of what we always done, we would only get what we've always gotten.  Not to say the past albums haven't been good for us, but it was the right time to launch forward and create a great new addition to our artistry and a solid new future for the band on this new record.

RtM: Is there a special guest on the album? And some another surprise or special edition for the fans?

Z: Yes there are guests on the album but they are performers you may have never heard of until now.  We decided to have some guests on backing vocals and also we also have some other surprises that propel will be amused with.  Again it's a bit too early to talk about that right now in detail, but everyone will find out soon enough.

RtM: Savatage had albums in a "Rock Opera" style (Streets), ans with them, you made several albums in the conceptual format. What about Circle II Circle, do you think to do something more in the same style, or maybe a Rock Opera, for example?

Z: To this point we have not done a "rock opera" record.  Probably because coming from Savatage, that has been something that I have been rather close to in terms of the "Dead Winter Dead" and "Wake of Magellan" albums from a "concept album" perspective.  CIIC has actually released two concept albums of our own in "Burden of Truth" and "Consequence of Power" but next year's release is also not a "concept" album per se.  Actually a lot of the themes on the new album reflect a similar subject matter, which has been the case with several CIIC CDs that are not "concept" albums.

  

RtM: Was very cool the promotion that you have done for the 60,000  views for "Diamond Blade" video, by the way, I see that you are always interacting with fans in networks, in the concerts, etc.... It reminded me that not all are like that, and many people see everything like a business oportunity, for an example a controversy  of Meet and Greets paid, and some artists charge high values for the fans to they have a contact, take pictures, get autographs. What do you think about that?

Z: Yes we enjoy all of the daily interation with our CIIC supporters and I personaly answer a lot of fan e-mails every day.  It takes a lot of time but it's defnitely well worth it.  But I think it is absolutely ridiculous that bands charge money from fans just to interact with them.  That's something that we see more and more of in today's music business.  I think the reason we see are seing this trend is because when bands start making money, the greed factor quickly starts to take over and bands start charging money for everything they can collect a dollar for.

We don't do that in CIIC.  We don't even charge for meet-n-greets or for fan club memberships.  We make anough money making albums and doing tours and selling our merchandise that we don't have to go there.  I especially see this a lot from bands that use to have success in the past, and they are still out their playing but they are probably angry that they are not making the amount of money they used to, so they start charging fans for everything they can charge them for. That's not a good precedent to set with fans and supporters in my opinion.

RtM:  It was announced this year that Savatage will make a special show at Wacken 2015! What was your reaction when realized that this reunion will happen? How were the negotiations? I believe that you are very happy with it, because i remember you  always demonstrated  the will that the band return to activities. Can you tell us a bit more about it, how will be this concert, set list, guests? Every Savatage fan in this world is dreaming with this concert now!!

Z: Well I understand the great buzz and excitement around the"reunuion" show and I absolutely expect to be there perfoming, of course.  When I first heard about it I was surprised it took this long for there to be a decision to have this concert.  Unfortunately We won't have any information about what is going to happen with the "reunion" until January.  So there are no further details on anything until then.  But all the guys in T.S.O. / Savatage are talking right now and we're just trying to make the Savatage "reunion" part of the T.S.O. show the best it can possibly be for all of the faithful Savatage fans that has have supported the band throughout all the years.

RtM: And Jon, surely he should have talked to you when the negotiations began to emerge? Did you feel that he is excited? Chris Caffery recently also commented that there is a possibility of something more than the Wacken concert? More shows? New album? Did you talk about something?

Z: Yes Jon and all the guys have spoken with me about the concert at Wacken.  Everything is still under negotiations at this time.  I am aware of Chris Caffery's comments on the "reunion" and Chris and I have always agreed on out feelings about Savatage and possible further activity.  So that doesn't surprise me in the least that he said that.  But then again Chris and I have been in agreement on that exact thing for years so we'll just have to see how Jon and Paul O'Neill feel about possibly continuing Savatage in the future.  After all they are the ones who make all of the decisions about the "reunion" and Savatage/T.S.O. business.

RtM: Jon said several times that Savatage ended up because not having a return in financial terms, and was one of the reasons that the band was stopping. Do you believe that a return of the band can now bring a different scenario? Also because I think that the work of Savatage, the legacy that the band is currently more recognized, and there are many new fans too.

Z: Of course I agree that the profile of Savatage has greatly increased because of the public knowledge that T.S.O. is actually basically a "re-configured" Savatage.  When I was in Savatage, it was a very lucrative enterprise for the most part and everyone in the band was paid well.  So of course the band could be an even more successful entity now that T.S.O. has raised its awareness and profile to a much a much higher level in the past few years.   During this period T.S.O. itself has raised the profile of my band CIIC to unheard of levels.  So from a business standpoint why wouldn't it do the same thing thing for the band it was formed from (Savatage)? 

RtM: Looking back, some years ago, would you tell us a little about your entry in Savatage, as was the beginning, your expectations, which hoped to accomplish with the band?

Z: Well you are talking about looking back about 20 years on this.  When I came into Savatage, I was a new inexperienced singer in the music business for the most part.  I learned much of what I know in the business from being in that band and also from watching the business transformation of the band into becoming T.S.O.  Of course I continued honing my writing and production skills in CIIC, but I owe it to all the players in Savatage for bringing me into the business and giving me a career that has spanned over 20 years.  My expectations were very high then and they continue to be high now.  It came down to my own personal drive and determination to make my career last this long and I believe the best times are yet to come from my career.

RtM: And when you left the band, including not participating in the latest album, "Poets and Madmens"? Today, you look back, feel regret not having participated in that album? What are the main reasons for your departure?

Z: No I don't feel any regrets whatsoever.  As you know these kinds of things happen every day in the music business.  I wouldn't trade the time I took out of Savatage to spend time with my family and at the time my newborn daughter (and later both of my daughters).  It was definitely a needed departure at the time.  Also at that same time we all knew that "Poets" was the final album for Savatage before the launch of T.S.O.  So in retrospect it was all done on good terms and the parting was very amicable.  All the guys in Savatage knew my situation at the time that I had to take that leave of absence.  That's why I have such a good relationship with all the Savatage and T.S.O. members and management to this very day.

RtM: Maybe it's a difficult question to answer, but what Savatage album and what the Circle II Circle as you point as your favorite?

Z: If I had to make a choice I would say that "Edge of Thorns" and "Handful of Rain" are my favorite Savatage albums and "Burden of Truth" and 'Seasons Will Fall" are my favorite CIIC albums to date.

RtM: And in your opinion, in which album is your best vocal performance?

Z:  Probably "Wake of Magellan" is my overall best vocal performance for a Savatage album and "Seasons Will Fall" is the best performance on a CIIC album. 

RtM: You have a great relationship with Brazil and Brazilian fans, coming here several times, including also participating in the album and gigs with Metal Opera Souslpell. I wish you  talk about this special relationship with Brazil and also your participation in Soulspell, singing along with Jon.

Z: Well I definitely have a special love affair with our followers, fans, and supporters in Brazil.  I speak to our Brazilain fans on our social media every day and they will tell you the same. I also have Brazilians on the CIIC team which includes guitarist Bill Hudson and our artist and web designer Joao Duarte of JDuarte Design, Inc.  I love Brazil and the people there bring so much goodwill to what we do.  

It's very obvious to anyone who views our social media pages that we really enjoy this aspect.  SSMO is only one of a few Brazilian bands and artists that I have collaborated with in the past.  And at this time it also looks like our first tour in support of the new CIIC album next will be in Brazil.  Things have been beautiful with CIIC's relationship with Brazil and I see this only improving in the future as we move forward into the years ahead.

RtM: And your idols, influences and references as a singer? What would you cite as the main?

Z: My main influences growing up were The Eagles, Ronnie James Dio (RIP), Geoff Tate, David Coverdale, Rob Halford.  Today I also follow Godsmack, A7X, Chris Daughtry, and Disturbed.

RtM: Who encouraged you to enter in the music the beginning, to be a professional musician? Have you ever wanted to be a singer from the beginning?

Z: The first person to inspire me into music was when I was 8 years old was the big brother of my best  friend in fifth grade in elementary school who told me one day that he was going to make me a singer and a drummer.  I was a bit surprised by this but it sounded like a lot of fun.  So I started out playing the drums when I was 9 and I have been a professional drummer for about 35 years.  I made the transition to fronting bands as a vocalist when I was 22 and I became an Atlantic Records recording artist with Savatage when I was 26.  I had always wanted to be a front man vocalist but I waited to make the jump from percussion after I finished college.

 RtM: And the tour of the new album by Circle II Circle? There are contacts for coming to Brazil?

Z: Yes, our first tour for the new CIIC album should be in Brazil so we are very much looking forward to that as we always do.  We always have an awesome time in Brazil!!  

RtM: Zak, thanks for your time dedicated to answering this interview, it was an honor, I am a fan of your work! Is the space for your message to the Brazilian fans!

Z: Of course I want to say thank you to all of our supporters in Brazil for all the fantastic energy and support you have given us in the past seven years we have been touring there.  It get bigger and bigger every time we tour there and we have gained so many friends and great relationships in Brazil.  WE LOVE YOU ALL!!  See you soon!!!  Thank you for everything Brazil!!
