Scherer/Batten: Pérola do Hard/Melodic Rock Contemporâneo

A história deste projeto reunindo o vocalista Marc Scherer e a guitarrista Jennifer Batten começa em 2010, quando iniciou a parceria de Scherer com Jim Peterik (Pride of Lions, Ides of March, sua primeira banda, a qual o single "Vehicle" foi o mais vendido da história da Warner Music, e claro, Survivor, com a qual foi nominado ao Grammy e indicado ao Oscar de melhor canção com "Eye of the Tiger", que foi tema do filme "Rocky III"). Peterik é um ícone da música, principalmente se falarmos do Hard Rock e Melodic Rock, criando pérolas do estilo, seja na década de 80 com o Survivor (quem não conhece "Eye of the Tiger"?, que foi tema do filme "Rocky III"), ou com seus projetos mais atuais, como o Pride of Lions. Em 2010, impressionado com a voz de Marc Scherer, inicia a compor para o que viria a ser o projeto Peterik/Scherer, a fim de mostrar a capacidade e talento de Marc.  (English Version)

O álbum "Risk Everything" foi lançado em 2015 pela Frontiers Music, gravadora Italiana responsável hoje por uma gama enorme de lançamentos do estilo, incluíndo em seu cast novos nomes e nomes consagrados e cultuados da época de ouro do Hard e Melodic Rock.

Da parceria e amizade, e entre uma conversa e outra, surgiu a ideia deste novo projeto, onde seriam "resgatadas" algumas pérolas do baú de composições de Jim Peterik, canções que, na visão de Marc, mereceriam uma nova chance. Foram então escolhidas 8 canções, as quais ganharam nova vida e a interpretação de Marc.

E para tornar isso tudo ainda mais coeso e atual, afinal eram canções de diferentes épocas, e também com parcerias diferentes, Jim tem a ideia de trazer para o projeto a fantástica Jennifer Batten, guitarrista que trabalhou com nomes como Michael Jackson e Jeff Beck. Jennifer deu  a liga final, trazendo bom gosto, feeling e doses de virtuosismo. O trio então escreve três novas canções para o álbum, sendo a primeira delas a que se tornaria faixa título do projeto: "Battlezone"

Lançado via Melodic Rock Records dia 22 de setembro, "Scherer/Batten's Battlezone" traz um impressionante track-list com 11 peças de arte do Hard Rock e Melodic Rock, com uma sonoridade pavimentada por aquele feeling dos anos 80, porém soando atual e coeso. São canções onde a musicalidade e bom gosto atingem em cheio nossos ouvidos, transitando por momentos ora mais Hard Rock, ora mais Melodic Rock, em diversos coloridos e sabores. Canções recheadas de grandes arranjos, belas melodias e inspiradas performances de Scherer e Batten, os quais são apoiados por um line-up de primeira linha, incluindo músicos de grupos como Chicago, Survivor, World Stage e outros. 

O próprio Jim Peterik se encarregou  da produção que está excelente, trazendo aquela qualidade que o estilo exige, e extraindo o melhor dos músicos, o que valorizou ainda mais as suas composições.

Aos primeiros acordes da faixa de abertura,  "Crazy Love", um Hard Rock com groove, podemos sentir o feeling e virtuosismo de Jennifer, aliados a grande voz de Marc.Destaque também para o refrão e pegajosos backing vocals; "Rough Diamond" alterna belas e suaves melodias de teclado, com a pegada e virtuosismo de Jennifer; "What do You Really Think" tem um andamento vibrante, e traz como destaque o magnífico refrão e as grandes melodias de teclado. Marc mostra feeling e técnica, passeando por regiões mais suaves e mais altas, às vezes parecendo duelar com a onipresente guitarra de Batten, sempre escolhendo belos timbres e exibindo virtuosismo.

"The Sound of Your Voice" é daquelas que nasceram destinadas a ser um Hit, e apesar de ter tido uma atenção na época em que foi gravada pelo 38 Special (no álbum "Bone Against Steel" de 1991), merecia nova chance, e ganhou uma versão mais vibrante e potente. Possui aquele feeling dos 80's, mas soa perfeitamente atual. A voz de Marc e as guitarras de Jennifer, assim como os arranjos de teclado, deram mais vida à canção; "Battlezone", a faixa título, é um Hard potente, virtuoso e com grandes vocais e impressionantes melodias e refrãos! Uma das 3 canções novas compostas pelo trio, e que batizou o álbum. Título forte, canção idem!

"Cuts Deep" é um  belo Melodic Rock. Balada de bom gosto, naquele estilo radiofônico dos anos 80, trazendo um dos mais marcantes refrãos do álbum, além de belos arranjos vocais e instrumental inspirado e carregado de feeling; "The Harder I Try" também é outro Melodic Rock de extremo bom gosto. Belas melodias de teclado e saxofone (este a cargo da ganhadora do Grammy Mindi Abair) trazem um ar melancólico, com Marc sabendo colocar a emoção correta; "Dreaming With My Eyes Wide Open", como o título até sugere, traz deliciosas melodias e cativante refrão, os quais nos fazem "sonhar com os olhos meio abertos".

"Space and Time" inicia com andamento moderado e suave, com Jennifer extraindo belos timbres. Suave e sofisticada, a canção cresce no refrão, que é apoiado por belos arranjos de teclado. Aquele sabor dos anos 80 também se faz presente; "Tender Fire", mais uma das novas canções compostas exclusivamente para o projeto, traz uma linha cativante de teclado, destacando o refrão quase sinfônico. As intervenções de Jennifer são certeiras e provocantes, e Marc esbanja classe e groove; "All Roads" encerra este belíssimo álbum de forma magistral. Power-Ballad com cativantes linhas vocais e melodias. O refrão traz algo de Soul Music, e Marc parece ter colocado doses extras de emoção em seus vocais.

Não é exagero afirmar que Marc Scherer, Jennifer Batten, e claro Jim Peterik e mais o incrível time de músicos envolvidos no projeto, cometeram uma "masterpiece" do estilo. Bom gosto, Feeling e atuações exuberantes. São onze faixas onde cada uma das músicas soa como uma pequena peça de arte, tal o cuidado com os detalhes, valorizando a musicalidade e inspiração dos músicos. Diversos “sabores”, tendo base o Melodic Rock dos anos 80, leia-se aí grandes melodias, excelentes teclados e guitarras, e um capricho enorme nos arranjos vocais.

Scherer/Batten' Battlezone: Contemporaneous Melodic Rock Pearl!

We can say that the story of this project with the vocalist Marc Scherer and guitarist Jennifer Batten begins in 2010, when started Scherer's partnership with Jim Peterik (Ides of March, that song "Vehicle" was the fastest selling single in Warner's history, and sure, Survivor, which he was nominated for a Grammy for the song "Eye of the Tiger). Peterik is an icon, especially if we talk about Hard Rock and Melodic Rock, creating pearls of the style, either in the 80's with Survivor (who does not know "Eye of the Tiger"?) Or with his most current projects, such as Pride of Lions. In 2010, impressed by the voice of Marc Scherer, he began composing for what would become the Peterik/Scherer project, in order to showcase Marc's talent and ability. (versão em português)

The album "Risk Everything" was released in 2015 by Frontiers Music, the Italian label responsible today for a huge range of releases of the style, including in its cast new names and well-known and celebrated names from the golden era of Hard, Classic and Melodic Rock.

From the partnership and friendship, and between a conversation and another, the idea of ​​this new project arose, where some pearls from the Peterik's vault, songs that, in Marc's view, would merit a new chance. They were chosen 8 songs, which gained new life with the interpretation of Marc.

And to make it all even more cohesive, after all were songs from different eras, and also with different partnerships, Jim has the idea to bring to the project the fantastic Jennifer Batten, guitarist who worked with names like Michael Jackson and Jeff Beck. Jennifer gave the final ingredient, bringing good taste, feeling and doses of virtuosity. The trio then writes three new songs for the album, the first of which would become title track of the project: "Battlezone".

Released via Melodic Rock Records on September 22, "Scherer/Batten's Battlezone" features an impressive track-list featuring 11 pieces of Hard Rock and Melodic Rock art, with a sonority paved by that 80's feel, but sounding current and cohesive . 

Songs where the musicality and good taste reach our ears full, passing for moments more Hard Rock, or more AOR/Melodic Rock, in diverse colors and flavors. Songs filled with great arrangements, beautiful melodies and inspired performances by Scherer and Batten, all of which are backed by a top-notch line-up, including musicians from groups like Chicago, Survivor, World Stage and others.

Jim Peterik himself was in charge of the production that is excellent, bringing the quality that the style requires, and drawing the best of the musicians, which further enhanced their compositions.

At the first chords of the opening track, "Crazy Love", we have a energic Hard Rock with groove. Highlighting the feeling and virtuosity of Jennifer, allied to the great voice of Marc, and also for the chorus and sticky backing vocals; "Rough Diamond" alternates beautiful and soft keyboard melodies, with Jennifer's footprint and virtuosity.

"What Do You Really Think" has a vibrant tempo, and brings out the magnificent chorus and the great keyboard melodies. Marc shows feeling and technique, walking through softer and higher regions, sometimes seeming to duel with the ubiquitous guitar of Batten, always choosing beautiful timbres and displaying virtuosity.

"The Sound of Your Voice" is one of those born destined to be a Hit, and despite having paid attention at the time it was recorded by 38 Special (on 1991's "Bone Against Steel" album), it deserved a new chance, and won a more vibrant and powerful version. It has that 80's feel, but it sounds perfectly current. Marc's voice and Jennifer's guitars, as well as the keyboard arrangements, made the song more alive; "Battlezone", the title track, is a powerful, virtuous Hard and with great vocals and impressive melodies and choruses! One of 3 new songs composed by the trio, and that baptized the album. Strong title, idem song!

"Cuts Deep" is a beautiful Melodic Rock. Tasteful ballad, in that radio style of the 80's, bringing one of the most remarkable refrains of the album, as well as beautiful vocal arrangements and instrumental inspired and loaded with feeling; "The Harder I Try" is also another Melodic Rock of extreme good taste. Beautiful melodies of keyboard and saxophone (this one in charge of the winner of the Grammy, Mindi Abair) bring a melancholic air, with Marc knowing to put the correct emotion; "Dreaming With My Eyes Wide Open", as the title even suggests, brings delightful melodies and captivating chorus, which make us "dream with eyes wide open" for sure!

"Space and Time" begins with a moderate and smooth tempo, with Jennifer extracting beautiful timbres. Soft and sophisticated, the song grows in the chorus, which is backed up by beautiful keyboard arrangements. That flavor of the 80s is also present; "Tender Fire" plus one of the new songs composed exclusively for the project, brings a captivating line of keyboard, highlighting the quasi-symphonic chorus. Jennifer's interventions are accurate and provocative, and Marc lavishes class and groove; "All Roads" ends this beautiful album masterfully. Power-Ballad with captivating vocal lines and melodies. The chorus brings something of Soul Music, and Marc seems to have put extra doses of emotion into his vocals.

It is no exaggeration to say that Marc Scherer, Jennifer Batten, and of course Jim Peterik and the incredible team of musicians involved in the project, committed a masterpiece of the style. Good taste, Feeling and lush performances. There are eleven tracks where each one of the songs sounds like a small piece of art, such as the care of the details, valuing the musicality and inspiration of the musicians. Several "flavors", based on the Melodic Rock of the 80's, and it means great melodies, excellent keyboards and guitars, and a huge whim in the vocal arrangements.

Entrevista: Cinnamun Beloved - Deixando a Musicalidade Fluir

Criada em 2011 pela vocalista e compositora Sabrina Filipcic Holm, o Cinnamun Beloved já possui um full-lenght e um DVD lançados, além de ter sido banda de suporte em shows de porte internacional, ao lado de bandas como Epica e Sirenia.  (English Version)

Com uma sonoridade moderna,  densa, bela e melodiosa, às vezes melancólica, às vezes sinfônica, possui uma personalidade marcante, sendo difícil lhe lhe colocar dentro de um rótulo específico, mas com certeza agradará fãs de grupos como The Gathering, Nightwish, Sirenia e outros que transitam nesse estilo sinfônico/Gótico.

Conversamos com a mentora do grupo, Sabrina Filipcic Holm, para trazer para vocês um pouco mais desta excelente banda argentina, que inclusive está com o segundo álbum praticamente pronto.

RtM: Para começar esta conversa, gostaria que você fizesse uma breve história da banda, aos leitores que conhecerão o Cimnamun Beloved por essa entrevista.

Sabrina Holm: A ideia inicial do Cinnamun Beloved surgiu no início de 2011, depois que deixei minha banda principal, a qual era fundadora e compositora principal. Decidi explorar novos estilos musicais sem abandonar meu estilo de composição. O primeiro material da banda foi gravado por músicos talentosos da cena local, que  fizeram parte da banda para os shows ao vivo. Cinnamun Beloved também contou com a participação de alguns músicos convidados: Diego Valdez (ex Skiltron) e Guillermo De Medio (que trabalhou com Tarja Turunen) no teclado e programação. A banda foi escolhida para abrir para o Epica em 2012. A banda também lançou um DVD ao vivo em 2013, com fragmentos de shows ao vivo e importantes músicos convidados.

RtM: Como você descreveria a sonoridade da banda?

SH: O som da banda é uma mistura de diferentes estilos de metal combinados com elementos eletrônicos, que tem como resultado um som moderno e poderoso, em combinação com minha voz.

RtM: A banda também sofreu várias alterações no line-up. Conte-nos mais a respeito.

SH: Por razões pessoais, em 2014, me separei dos demais músicos, e comecei a compor o que seria o próximo álbum da banda, chamado "Stain", o qual está sendo gravado ainda. A banda está postando as novas músicas no Youtube. para que a pessoas possam ouvir o novo material. A atual formação é: Eu (Sabrina Filipcic Holm) nos vocais,  Leonardo Lukaszewicz (guitas), Germán Esquerda (keyboards), David Saavedra (baixo) e Matías Sala (bateria). Em março de 2017 Cinnamun Beloved ganhou um concurso para ser banda de apoio do Sirenia em Buenos Aires. Atualmente, a banda continua tocando e gravando o novo álbum que possui um som diferente do primeiro, incluindo elementos do Power metal, mas ainda mantendo o som sinfônico.

"Eu gosto de encontrar o meu próprio estilo, não tento copiar qualquer cantor (e não poderia, mesmo se eu quisesse)"

RtM: Gostaria que você nos contasse um pouco sobre o álbum de estréia, como foi a repercussão dele e também gostaria que você falasse sobre o conceito do título, "The Weird Moment"

SH: Felizmente, a repercussão do primeiro álbum foi muito boa, mas a cena do metal aqui é muito complicada, por vezes, é difícil conseguir levar às pessoas o seu material ...

Sobre o nome do álbum, eu (Sabrina Filipcic Holm) estava em um momento muito estranho na minha vida, então é por isso que eu decidi nomear o álbum desse jeito ...

RtM: Gostaria que você nos conte um pouco mais sobre 2 músicas desse debut, que eu gostei muito, são elas "Leaving Myself" e "Never Asleep", para mim, dois destaques do seu primeiro álbum.

SH: Essas são duas músicas que escrevi com piano e voz somente, e decidimos fazer "músicas" delas, com elementos eletrônicos e toda a banda no final, para torná-las mais divertidas e poderosas.

RtM: No perfil da banda, você se descreve como Gothic Metal, mas vejo que o som vai além, sendo muito criativo. Gostaria que você comentasse sobre a sonoridade e o que você procura em termos musicais para a banda?

SH: Nós nos consideramos uma banda de Gothic Metal porque nós realmente não sabemos o que somos ....hehe. No segundo álbum, há mais elementos do Power Metal, mas ainda sinfônico. Eu acho que porque há uma cantora em primeiro lugar, mas nós fazemos a música que gostamos, nós não pensamos: "isso não é gótico". Eu apenas componho do jeito que eu quero (risos).

RtM: Fiquei impressionado com a qualidade de som do seu álbum. Eu vejo que você está projetando uma carreira internacional, e você sabe que só é possível com o investimento. Gostaria que você comentasse sobre isso e sobre os planos futuros da banda.

SH: Claro que é um plano futuro da banda, procuramos um selo, e queremos que nossa música seja ouvida fora da Argentina também. Temos uma boa repercussão por pessoas que nos ouviram em outros países, mas sabemos que é difícil,  são muitas bandas boas na mesma situação que estamos ... mas há bandas de heavy metal da Argentina que atravessaram o oceano, então, quem sabe?

RtM: Falando sobre investimentos, logo após o álbum, você também lançou um DVD. Eu achei uma ideia interessante, algumas novas bandas lançam DVD logo nos primeiros anos. Gostaria de saber como ocorreu a repercussão e se você alcançou os resultados esperados.

SH: Foi um pouco arriscado, mas decidimos fazê-lo de qualquer maneira, a repercussão foi boa e está disponível no youtube para que as pessoas possam assisti-lo. O DVD físico tem entrevistas e backstages.

RtM: E sobre o processo de composição na banda? Como funciona?

SH: No primeiro álbum, a composição foi feita por mim, Sabrina Filipcic Holm e Jorge Perini, que me ajudou, tive algumas ideias e fizemos músicas delas. No segundo álbum, a composição vem sendo feita por mim e Federico Cordera, exceto duas faixas feitas por Guillermo de Medio, Leonardo Lukaszewicz e eu, uma por mim e a intro e outro composta pelo tecladista Germán Esquerda.

 "São muitas bandas boas na mesma situação que estamos ... mas há bandas de Heavy Metal da Argentina que atravessaram o oceano, então, quem sabe?"

RtM: E quais são as principais inspirações quando você está compondo e escrevendo músicas?

SH: Depende do clima, acho, he he. Como eu disse antes, não planejamos nossas músicas ou dizemos que não é nosso estilo, ou qualquer coisa assim ... se gostamos, está dentro ....

RtM: Como você disse antes, existem várias músicas novas no youtube, gostaria que você nos contasse, então, qual é a situação atual do novo álbum e se há uma previsão de lançamento?

SH: O novo álbum está quase terminado, e será lançado no final de 2017, esperamos. Estamos colocando no youtube as novas músicas, para que as pessoas possam ouvi-las antes que o álbum esteja completo, então eles sabem o que é o Cinnamun Beloved hoje em dia. Felizmente as pessoas gostaram do que já ouviram! 

RtM: E para fazer um paralelo com a cena na Argentina com a cena aqui no Brasil, quais são as principais dificuldades enfrentadas para manter uma banda de Metal em seu país?

SH: A cena do Metal aqui é muito pequena, e é muito difícil conquistar seu espaço. Muitas pessoas são desonestas, e você tem que pagar para abrir para bandas estrangeiras, e uma soma considerável de dinheiro, é tão injusto, nunca fizemos isso, mas muitas pessoas fazem isso, nunca termina ...

"Estamos colocando no youtube as novas músicas, para que as pessoas possam ouvi-las antes que o álbum esteja completo, então eles sabem o que é Cinnamun Beloved hoje em dia."

RtM: Sabrina, e sobre você? Conte-nos um pouco mais como você entrou na música? Quem foram seus principais incentivadores? Você tem uma voz bonita, gostaria que nos conte um pouco sobre suas influências e seus antecedentes musicais?

SH: Comecei a ouvir Metal quando tinha 16 anos, mas eu cantei toda a minha vida. Comecei a estudar e continuo hoje em dia. Obrigado pelo  "bela voz!". Eu tenho influências, mas ninguém em particular. Eu gosto de encontrar o meu próprio estilo, não tento copiar qualquer cantor (e não poderia, mesmo se eu quisesse), então eu faço o que posso fazer ...

Interview: Cinammun Beloved - Letting the Music Flow!

Created in 2011 by vocalist and composer Sabrina Filipcic Holm, Cinnamun Beloved already has a full-lenght and a DVD released, in addition to being a supporting band in international shows, alongside bands like Epica and Sirenia.  (versão em português)

With a modern sound, dense, beautiful and melodious, sometimes melancholic, sometimes symphonic, it has a remarkable personality, being difficult to put within a specific label, but surely will please fans of groups like The Gathering, Nightwish, Sirenia and others that transpose in this style symphonic/Gothic.


We talked with the group's mentor, Sabrina Filipcic Holm, to bring you a little more of this excellent Argentine band, which is even with the second album practically ready.

RtM: To start this conversation, I would like you to make a brief history of the band, to the readers who are knowing the band by this interview.

Sabrina Filipcic Holm: The idea of Cinnamun Beloved appears at the beginning of 2011, by me, the singer and keyboard player. After I left my previous band, which had me as a founder member and main composer. I have decided to explore new music styles without abandon my composition style. The first material of the band was recorded featured renowned  musicians  from the local scene whom will be part of the band for the live shows. Cinnamun Beloved also counted with the participation of some guest musicians: Diego Valdez (ex Skiltron) vocals, and Guillermo De Medio, (who has worked with TarjaTurunen) in keyboard and programming. The band was chosen to support Epica in 2012. The band also released a live DVD in 2013 with fragment of their live shows, and important guest musicians.

RtM: How can you describe the sound of the band?

SH: The sound of the band is a mix of different  metal styles combined with electronics elements, which has as result a modern and powerful sound, in combination with my voice. 

RtM: The Band also had some line-up's changes. Tell us more about.

SH: For personal reasons in 2014 i have decided to take separate ways with the other musicians, and started to compose what would be the next album of the band called "Stain", which is being recorded and will be released by the end of 2017. The band is uploading all the new songs in youtube so peolple can listen to the new material.The new members of the band are: Me (Sabrina Filipcic Holm) (vocals) Leonardo lukaszewicz (guitas) Germán Esquerda (keys) David Saavedra (bass) and Matías Sala (drums). In march of 2017 Cinnamun Beloved won a contest to support Sirenia in Buenos Aires. Nowadays the band continous playing live and recordig the new album, which has a different sound from the first one, includins elements of Power metal, but still mantaining the symphonic sound.

"I like to find my own style, I don’t try to copy any singer (and I couldn’t if I wanted to)"

RtM: I would like you to tell us a little about the debut album, how it was the repercussion of it, and also would like you to talk about the concept of the title, "The Weird Moment"

SH: Fortunatly the repercussion of the first album was very good, but the metal scene here is very complicated so sometimes its hard to let people know your material….

About the name of the album, I (Sabrina Filipcic Holm) was in a very weird moment in my life, so that’s why I decided to name the album that way…

RtM: I would like that you tell us a little more about 2 songs from your debut, wich I like it so much, “Leaving Myself” and “Never Asleep”, for me, two highlights of your first album.

SH: Those are two songs I have wrote just with piano and voice, and we decided to make “songs” of them, with electronic elements, and the whole band at the end, to make them more fun and powerfull.

RtM: In the profile of the band, you describe yourself as Gothic Metal, but I see that the sound goes beyond, being very creative. I would like you to comment about the sonority, and what do you seek in musical terms for the band?

SH: We consider ourselves as a gothic metal band because we don’t really know what we are….ha ha ha. In the second album there are more elements of power metal but still symphonic. I guess because there is a female singer in the first place, but we do the music we like we don’t think “this is not gothic” I just compose whatever I want (hahaha).

"There are Heavy Metal bands from Argentina who has cross the ocean, so... who knows??"

RtM: I was struck by the sound quality of your album. I see that you are designing an international career, and you know that it is only possible with investment.  Would like you commented on this and about the future plans of the band.

SH: Of course it’s a future plan of the band, we are seekings for labels, and we want our music to be listened outside Argentina too, we have good repercussion in people who have listen to us in other countries, but we know its hard and there are lots of good bands in the same situation as we are…but there are heavy metal bands from Argentina who has cross the ocean, so... who knows??

RtM: Speaking about investments, soon after the album, you also released a DVD. I thought an interesting idea, few new bands release a DVD soon in their first years. I would like to know how the repercussion was, and if you have achieved the expected results with this release.

SH: It was kind of risky but we decided to did it anyway, the repercussion was good and its available in youtube so people can watch it. The real DVD has interviews and backstages.

RtM: And about the composition process in the band? How it works?

SH: In the first album the composition was made by me, Sabrina Filipcic Holm and Jorge Perini who helped me I had some songs and ideas and we made songs of them. In the second album the composition was made by me and Federico Cordera, except two track made by Guillermo de Medio, Leonardo lukaszewicz, and me, one compose by me and the intro and outro composed by the key player Germán Esquerda. 

RtM: And What are the main inspirations when you are composing and writing songs?

SH: It depends in the mood I guess! ha ha ah! as I said before, we don’t plan our songs or say its not our style, or anything like that….if we like it, is in….

RtM: As you have said before, there are several new songs on youtube, I would like you to tell us then, what is the current situation of the new album, and if there is a release forecast?

SH: The new álbum is almost finished, and will be released in the end of 2017 we expect. We are uploading the new songs, so people can listen to them before the álbum its complete, so they know what is Cinnamun Beloved nowadays. Fortunatly people have liked it!

RtM: And to make a parallel with the scene in Argentina with the scene here in Brazil, what are the main difficulties you face in keeping a Metal band in your country?

SH:The metal scene here is very little, and its very hard to make yourself a place in it…many people are unkind with each other and you have to pay to play with a foreing bands a lot of money, its so unfair, we never did it, but a lot of people do so it never ends….

RtM: Sabrina, and how about you? Tell us a little more how did you get into music? Who were your main supporters? You have a beautiful voice, would like you tell us a little about your influences and your musical background?

SH: I started listen to metal when I was 16 but I sang all my life. I started to study and I continue nowadays.Thank you for the beautiful voice!!!!! I have influences but no one in particular. I like to find my own style, I don’t try to copy any singer (and I couldn’t if I wanted to) so I just do what I can do…

Entrevista - Edguy: 25 Anos Monumentais

 

Quatro anos depois do lançamento de seu último álbum de estúdio, “Space Police: Defenders of the Crown” (2014), para satisfação dos fãs, a banda alemã Edguy comemora seu 25° aniversário com o lançamento de “Monuments”, que em seu pacote completo é formado por uma coletânea dupla, que traz ainda 5 músicas novas, e uma inédita, gravada na época do "Savage Poetry", e ainda CD ao vivo e  um DVD com um show da banda gravado em 2004 no Brasil.

O baixista Tobias Exxel, no grupo desde 1998, nos concedeu uma entrevista para nos contar um pouco mais sobre essa marca importante da banda.

RtM: Tendo em vista que a grande maioria das bandas, com o decorrer do tempo e convivência, acaba se desgastando e gerando conflitos entre si, qual é o segredo do Edguy para manter a harmonia entre os integrantes depois de tantos anos?
TE: Oh, acredite em mim, temos alguns conflitos de vez em quando, e sempre conseguimos perceber. Isso é bastante normal e acontece em todas as famílias.

RtM: Nesses 25 anos de banda o Edguy já tocou em diversos países, existe algum país que a banda nunca tocou e que gostaria de tocar?
TE: Sim, ainda existem muitos países, e o mundo não é o bastante, ha ha. É sempre uma grande experiência visitar novos países, e mesmo os que visitamos, digamos, pela décima quinta vez (risos), ainda há algo a explorar e você sempre consegue conhecer novas pessoas. É muito importante que a comunidade Metal ainda esteja crescendo em alguns países. Só pra citar alguns, gostaria de tocar  na Índia, Turquia e Islândia.

RtM: O álbum de comemoração dos 25 anos da banda, "Monuments", tem um DVD com o show de 2004 da turnê do álbum "Hellfire Club", este DVD se trata do show que aconteceu em SP que deveria ter se tornado DVD, mas por problemas técnicos isso não aconteceu?
TE: Sim, exatamente, nós somente lançamos 3 músicas desse show no mini DVD do álbum "Superheroes", mas agora finalmente pudemos lançar o show completo, e eu realmente estou muito muito feliz! Nós tivemos que ter paciência, mas nós finalmente conseguimos, e eu acho que ele se encaixa perfeitamente neste incrível pacote do "Monuments".

RtM: A arte da capa de "Monumentos" foi muito bem feita e parece uma referência ao "Mandrake",  poderia nos dizer mais sobre como ela foi criada?
TE: Sim, não foi criada pelo mesmo artista, mas baseou-se em um estilo muito parecido. Se você olhar mais de perto, você encontrará referências de todos os álbuns, e há muitos pequenos detalhes bem legais. Eu acho que o título fala por si mesmo, e  se encaixam perfeitamente. E desde "Mandrake" o coringa é uma constante companhia para o Edguy, mesmo quando não aparece na capa, mas certamente ele é o guardião perfeito para nossos "monumentos"!

O Edguy pretende se concentrar no lançamento do "Monuments" e na tour de comemoração, ou podemos aguardar para logo um novo álbum de estúdio?
TE: Vamos ver. Eu realmente gostaria de fazer um novo álbum logo, mas nós não fizemos nenhum plano a respeito disso até o momento.

RtM: Como vocês veem a evolução do som da banda nos dias de hoje?
TE: Essa sempre é uma pergunta difícil de responder. Eu acho que temos uma excelente carreira, e desde que pudemos sair em turné com o álbum "Vainglory Opera", que foi a  oportunidade de tocar nossa música ao redor do mundo, e por um longo tempo com uma base de fãs tão bonita e ampla. Isso é realmente especial.

RtM: E existe algo que vocês fizeram e não fariam novamente?
TE: A partir desse ponto de vista, nós já fizemos um monte de escolhas certas, não fizemos? hahaha! Se eu olhar mais de perto para pequenas coisas, detalhes, decisões, etc, provavelmente teriam coisas das quais eu gostaria de fazer diferente. De qualquer forma, não faz sentido falar sobre isso. E o fato  é  que somos cinco pessoas diferentes na banda, e não temos necessariamente as mesmas opiniões sobre tudo, haha! 

RtM: Nesse intervalo em que Tobias Sammet se dedicava ao seu projeto Avantasia, vocês se comunicaram para elaboração do material para o álbum "Monuments"?
TE: Não, somente começamos a trabalhar nisso após Tobi estar livre de seus compromissos com o Avantasia..

RtM: E quanto a participação dos integrantes nas composições?
TB: Nas novas músicas do "Monuments", mudamos um pouco nossa forma de trabalhar, então Jens, Dirk e, eu tivemos mais influência nas composições (N. do R.: Tobias compôs 2 das 5 novas músicas e os demais compuseram uma cada). Eu realmente gostaria de poder fazer com que as coisas funcionassem mais desse modo, como um time mesmo, e tirar o tempo necessário para compor o próximo álbum. Todos ficamos felizes com as cinco músicas, que possuem coisas legais de Rock com um pouco de Power Metal tradicional, como sempre.

RtM: O que você está ouvindo ultimamente,  e o que você conhece de bandas brasileiras?
TE: Eu tenho ouvido o Metallica  "Hardwired", Rush "Counterparts" e muitas músicas do Scorpions, que adoro ouvir. Claro que conheço meus amigos do Angra do Brasil e, como eu também sou um grande fã de Megadeth, eu realmente achei o máximo ver o Kiko tocar na banda!

RtM: Existe uma possibilidade da turnê comemorativa dos 25 anos da banda passar pelo Brasil?
TB: acredite em mim, eu realmente espero que sim !!!

Four years after the release of their last studio album, "Space Police: Defenders of the Crown" (2014), to the satisfaction of fans, german band Edguy celebrates its 25th anniversary with the launch of "Monuments", which in its complete package consists of a double CD, which also includes 5 new songs, and an unpublished one, recorded at the time of "Savage Poetry", and a live CD and a DVD with a show recorded in 2004 in Brazil.

The bassist Tobias Exxel, in the group since 1998, gave us an interview to tell us a bit more about this important brand of the band, and some other stuff. Check it!

RtM: Considering that the great majority of the bands, with the passage of time and coexistence, ends up wearing down and generating conflict between them, what is the secret of Edguy to maintain the harmony between the members of the band after all those years?

TE: Oh believe me, wehave some conflictsfrom time to time, and always had them ever since. That's quite normal and it happens in everyfamily.

RtM: In these 25 years of band Edguy has played in several countries, is there any country that the band never played and would like to play?

TE: Yes there are still many countries left, and the world is not enough anyway, haha. It's always a great experience to visit new countries, but even when we visit many countries for, let's say, the fifteenth time, there's still so much to explore and you always get to know new people. It's great to see how the Metal community is still growing in some countries. That said, I really would loveto play in India, Turkey or Iceland, just to mention a few.

"We are five people in the band, and we not necessarily have the same opinion about everything."

RtM: The album "Monuments" is celebrating the 25 years of the band, and it will have a DVD with the 2004 concert tour of the album "Hellfire Club". This DVD is about the show that happened in SP that should have become DVD, bu for technical reasons did not happen?

TE: Yes exactly, we just released three songs of this show back then on the Superheroes Mini DVD, but now we are alble to release the full show, and I'm really really happy and proud on it! We had to be patient, but finally we got it done and I think it fits perfectly to that huge Monuments package right now!

RtM: The art cover of "Monuments" was very well made and looks like a reference to "Mandrake", could you tell us more about how it was created?

TE: Yes, it was not drawn by the same artist, but it was wash-made in a very similar style. If you take a closer look, you will find many hints to all our albums and there are so many fine little details. I guess the title speaks for itself and it fits perfectly together. Since Mandrake the jester has always been a constant companion for Edguy, even though he has not appeared on every front cover, but he surely is the guardian of our Monuments!

RtM: Edguy intends to focus on the launch of "Monuments" and the commemorative tour or can we wait for the next years a new studio album?

TE: Let's wait and see. I would really love to work on a new album pretty soon, but we haven't made any plans together on this by now.

"Jens, Dirk and I had much more influence on the songwriting. I really hope we will be able to improve this way of working." (T. Exxel, about the new songs)

RtM: How do you see the evolution of the band's sound these days?

TE: That's always a difficult question to answer. I think we had a great carreer, and since we were able to go on our first tour for the Vain Glory Opera album, we appreciate that we have the chance to play our music all over the world for such a long time with such a beautiful and dedicated fanbase. This is something really really  special.

RtM: And is there anything you did that you did not do again?

TE: From this point of view I would say we made the whole lot of things in the right way, haven't we? hahaha! If I look at it more closely I might surely find little things, decisions, etc. of which I would have loved to do different. But somehow it doesn't make sense to think about it on and on. With the fact that we are five people in the band, and we not necessarily have the same opinion about everything, haha! 

RtM: During that time when Tobias Sammet was working on his Avantasia project, did you work to prepare the material for the album Monuments?

TE: We mainly just started after Tobi was finished with his Avantasia activities.

RtM: What is the level of participation that the members have in the compositions?

TB: On the new songs of the Monuments album we changed our way of working a little bit, just Jens, Dirk and I had much more influence on the songwriting. I really hope we will be able to improve this way of working , as a real team and take the time we need on the next album. We all are happy with the five new songs, and again we mixed up some cool rock stuff with some traditional Power Metal as we always love to do.

RtM: What have you been listening lately? Do you know many Brazilian bands?

TE: I've been listening to Metallica's Hardwired, Rush's Counterparts and many Scorpions songs as I always love to listen to. Of course I know our friends of Angra from Brazil and I am a big Megadeth fan too, I really think it's awesome to see Kiko playing guitar in this band !!!

RtM: Is there any possibility of the commemorative tour come to Brazil?

TB: Believe me, I really really hope so !!!
