Silent: Seguindo o Coração

Formada em 1991, no Rio de Janeiro, por Gustavo Andriewiski, a banda de Melodic Rock/AOR SILENT tem uma história que rende um livro, e com várias emoções, passando por aquela determinação inicial de formar uma banda, realizar essa vontade, compor músicas, realizar shows, gravar vídeos, ganhar destaque em programa de TV, emplacar músicas em trilhas de programas de uma grande rede de TV, gravar o primeiro álbum, receber críticas positivas até de publicações do exterior, passar pelos famosos confrontos de direcionamento, encerrar as atividades, as tentativas de retorno e até uma tragédia.  (ENGLISH VERSION)

Após algumas tentativas de retorno frustradas, finalmente as coisas se encaminharam no final de 2010, 3 membros originais se reuniram para decidir que a banda voltaria, mas no início do ano seguinte, Alexandre França faleceu vítima de um desastre natural em janeiro de 2011 (enchentes e desmoronamentos), o que abalou muito os demais, porém, também para honrar a vontade do seu amigo, decidiram seguir em frente, chamam Marcos Ferraz, outro integrante original, o qual depois dá lugar a Douglas Boiago, e recrutam Alex Cavalcanti para as guitarras, completando a formação atual.

Em 2015 apresentam o single "Around the Sound", um hit nato, que traz excelentes melodias e grande refrão, mostrando uma sonoridade atual e que a banda estava definitivamente de volta. Em 2016, após 14 anos, "The Land of Lightning" vem a tona, trazendo 16 pérolas de Melodic Rock e AOR. E não pararam por aí, pois através de seu site oficial seguem disponibilizando músicas inéditas, faixas ao vivo, faixas raras e remixadas. Conversamos com Tilly e Gustavo, que nos contou um pouco mais dessa história, que ainda terá muitos capítulos, sempre seguindo o coração e fazendo música com paixão! Confira:

RtM: Para início de conversa, gostaria que você falasse um pouco das causas que levaram o segundo álbum demorar um tempo relativamente longo, desde a estreia com “The Bright Side” (2001), para ser lançado. 

Tilly: Antes de tudo, obrigado pelo espaço para falarmos um pouco da nossa banda. Em 2001 quando o “The Bright Side” saiu, álbum que foi gravado entre 96/97,  coincidiu com o  Gustavo ir morar no USA, a banda na verdade estava parada. Com os bons reviews obtidos e o interesse de um selo paulista em lançar nosso segundo álbum, ameaçamos uma volta, mas, a coisa não evoluiu e resolvemos decretar o “fim” em 2005. Em 2006 o Gustavo retornou para o Brasil e resolvemos juntamente com o França montar uma nova banda, chamada REPPLICA, que durou até 2010. 


RtM: Além das dificuldades, até um pouco maiores em se tratando de Melodic Rock e Hard, de manter uma banda, também houve a perda do Alexandre França.
Tilly: Em Dezembro de 2010 nós 3 nos reunimos em uma mesa de bar para jogar conversa fora e planejar o ano seguinte, foi quando o França sugeriu voltarmos com o SILENT, marcamos de começar a trabalhar então em 2 semanas....quis o destino que isso não acontecesse, infelizmente. Eu e o Gustavo tiramos um ano de “luto” e encaramos essa volta como uma missão e começamos a trabalhar em 2012 para o que seria o “Land Of Lightning”.

Esse tipo de som (Melodic e Hard Rock) nunca foi popular aqui no Brasil, mesmo nos anos dourados (80’s), mas, na verdade nunca pensamos nisso! (risos) Fazíamos aquilo que o nosso coração e vontade mandavam.

RtM: Entre esse lapso de tempo entre os dois álbuns, faça um resumo pra gente sobre o que aconteceu com a banda, em que vocês, Gustavo e Tilly, remanescentes do primeiro álbum, estiveram envolvidos falando em termos musicais.

Tilly: Eu fiquei tentando remontar a banda para gravarmos um segundo álbum para o selo de SP e depois fui tocar em bandas cover (Country e Classic Rock). Um pouco antes do Gustavo voltar, em 2006, eu toquei com duas bandas cariocas (Lion Heart e Krystal Tears) e depois fiquei direto no REPPLICA até Dezembro de 2010. Em 2011 eu e o Gustavo fomos fazer parte de um projeto de um DJ (Ramada) onde ele queria tocar as bases de Dance juntamente com uma banda de rock.

Gustavo: Eu trabalhei como produtor de alguns artistas nos Estados Unidos e toquei em duas bandas de cover, numa delas conheci o Douglas, nosso baixista. Trabalhei num projeto autoral em parceria com meu amigo James Rose, que chamávamos de Mr. Rose, mas nunca foi publicado. Desse projeto aproveitamos algumas músicas como "Land Of Lightning" e "One More Time", para o nosso último álbum! Também cantei a música de encerramento de Dragon Ball GT!

RtM: Antes de falarmos mais a respeito de “Land of Lightning”, vamos falar um pouco do início da banda, um pequeno histórico, de como surgiu a ideia de montar uma banda do estilo aqui no Brasil, e se vocês visavam o mercado lá fora.

Tilly: A banda foi formada a partir de uma vontade do Gustavo, que não queria  mais fazer músicas para vocalistas que não entendiam o que ele tinha pensado como linha vocal, então ele resolveu que queria cantar e saiu recrutando a galera.

Vou falar por mim, eu não pensava no mercado fora, o que foi o meu maior erro, pensava sim em fazer músicas com qualidade, com paixão e tentar com isso um contrato com alguma gravadora aqui e o mercado fora seria uma consequência.

Gustavo: O mercado exterior era um sonho em 1991, um grande desejo, mas parecia inalcançável na época!

RtM: E quais seriam as suas principais influências e inspirações dentro do estilo?

Gustavo: Temos uma grande influência, que é na verdade um produtor e não uma banda em particular. O “Mutt Lange” produziu o Def Leppard, o AC/DC, Bryan Adams e muitos outros. Acho que é a maior influência da formação original. Hoje em dia, com o Alex Cavalcanti, vem uma forte pegada de Brian May nos solos e é lógico o Bon Jovi tem grande participação nisso tudo!

RtM: Vocês também tiveram um vídeo em um programa da MTV, na época que podíamos ainda dizer que eles eram um canal de música, depois foi ficando inviável produzir vídeos, pois não havia onde veicular, mas felizmente, com o crescimento da internet, e a popularização de canais como o Youtube e depois outras plataformas digitais, bandas independentes puderam divulgar seus trabalhos.

Tilly: Verdade, a MTV era um canal que conseguia nos prender para ficar assistindo sua programação. O Vídeo em questão foi o da música “Watching”, havíamos gravado a demo dela em Junho de 1991 e o vídeo em Janeiro de 1992. Como o resultado final nos agradou bastante resolvemos mandar para o extinto “Demo MTV”, o clipe passou no programa e foi votado o melhor da noite, entrando com isso na programação do canal. Hoje, temos o Youtube onde você encontra tudo ou quase tudo, posta um vídeo e na mesma hora alguém no Japão pode assistir. As plataformas de streaming são hoje uma ferramenta essencial para as bandas e elas tem acesso mesmo sem ter uma gravadora ou selo.

RtM: E sobre o debut, com “The Bright Side” (2001), gostaria que nos contasse como foi a sensação de ter o primeiro álbum lançado? 

Tilly: Eu lembro do dia em que recebi o lote de CDs e abri para conferir, hoje em qualquer fundo de quintal você consegue prensar seus CDs, na época era mais complicado, tinha que ir atrás de fábricas, no nosso caso fizemos na Microservice. Lembro também de ter comentado com o Gustavo para virar o CD e ver ele prateado, isso era a prova de que o CD tinha sido feito em fábrica, os CDRs eram dourados ou azuis, nunca prata.

RtM: E também como surgiu a oportunidade de ter duas músicas em novelas da TV Globo, a “I Found Faith” e “Bitter Tear”, em “Vira-Lata” e “O Amor Está no Ar”?

Tilly: Ouvir sua música na TV, nos finais dos capítulos com os créditos subindo ou sendo temas de personagens, caso que aconteceu com ambas...não tem preço. Quanto as músicas das novelas, houve um “gap” de 4/5 anos entre aparecer nas novelas e o álbum sair, ou seja, não conseguimos atingir as pessoas que gostaram do estilo. Para ter as músicas teriam que comprar as trilhas das novelas. Foi uma época que não soubemos aproveitar, éramos jovens, ingênuos e não tínhamos empresário.

RtM: E a repercussão do álbum? Com as músicas na trilha dessas novelas vocês tiveram um retorno positivo? Eu lembro que foi um pouco difícil conseguir o álbum, e inclusive apresentei a banda para vários fãs de Melodic Rock.

Tilly: A repercussão do álbum foi muito boa, muitos reviews interessantes, notas altas, mas, tivemos que mandar para a Alemanha e daí sim começou haver procura aqui no Brasil. Fechamos uma parceria com uma extinta loja de SP, que passou a vender nossos CDs e anunciar nas revistas especializadas.

RtM: Apesar de remeter aos nomes tradicionais do estilo, a banda soa contemporânea, a exemplo de muitos grupos atuais, e podemos perceber uma banda que está em um nível igual, ou pelo menos muito próximo do material que vimos de selos como Frontiers, Melodic Rock e Aor Heaven, por exemplo. O que vocês têm acompanhado desse cenário, que possui um público fiel, e isso pode ser observado pelo crescimento desses selos especializados, e sua perspectivas, não só lá fora como aqui no Brasil?

Tilly: Sim, nós sempre tivemos muita preocupação com a questão de qualidade de gravação e usar elementos atuais para que o som não ficasse “datado”. Na verdade esse público, foi o que sobrou daquela explosão que foi no anos 80, passados 30 anos, tem um pessoal que começou a se interessar por esse estilo, caso, que vem acontecendo na Suécia, onde “pipocam” bandas do estilo, tem um festival, o Sweden Rock Festival, voltado para esse público, que é muito fiel. Com relação aos selos, eu acompanhei todo o crescimento da Frontiers, que é o maior selo do estilo, e talvez a única forma através dele de bandas dos anos 80 ainda conseguirem lançar material inédito. 

RtM: Sim! Ainda bem que eles tiveram essa determinação, e há vários outros selos apostando no estilo agora.
Tilly: Acho que se não tivesse a Frontiers, dificilmente veríamos um álbum do Nelson, Night Ranger, Trixter, etc... Além de mostrar para o mundo bandas novas, já tendo meio que um “carimbo de aprovação”, tipo, se está na Frontiers, vale a pena conferir.

Quanto ao Brasil, me impressiona muito a quantidade e qualidade de bandas que estão surgindo no estilo, espero muito que continue crescendo.

RtM: Bom, “Land of Lightning” finalmente foi lançado no final de 2016, e mesmo sendo lançado no fim do ano, apareceu em várias listas de “Melhores do Ano”. E a repercussão em torno do álbum? Como estão sendo os feedbacks?

Tilly: Na verdade ele foi lançado (em CD) em agosto de 2016. Sim, tivemos bons reviews, a recepção em torno do álbum tem sido muito boa, tivemos nossa foto na capa da edição 87 da revista Rock Meeting com uma entrevista de 4 páginas, além de algumas entrevistas para rádio e TV. “Around The Sun” e “Love Is” entraram na programação normal de uma rádio portuguesa (Cascais 105.4).

RtM: Ah, "Love Is" é um verdadeiro Hit do primeiro CD!! (e está como bônus no novo) Bom, o álbum está muito caprichado, tanto na parte gráfica, com uma estética muito bonita e simples, e uma sonoridade ótima. Eu que adorei o primeiro álbum, com esse não foi diferente, inclusive mostrei para algumas pessoas, e pensaram se tratar de alguma banda estrangeira. O que você acha que falta para que as bandas nacionais tenham um reconhecimento maior do público?

Tilly: Espaço. Espaços para tocar, espaço na mídia para gerar uma curiosidade  do público e o mais importante, que a galera que curte o estilo compareça aos shows, deem apoio a essas bandas.

RtM: Quanto ao mercado para o estilo, Melodic Rock e AOR mais especificamente, aqui no Brasil, você vê como mais complicado do que para outros estilos? Você acredita que talvez o Silent consiga ter uma repercussão maior tentando lançar o álbum em países da Europa? Já falamos antes da Frontiers, que cresceu muito e tem lançado muitas coisas de nomes tradicionais e novos nomes.

Tilly: Sim, vejo esse mercado muito fechado. A Frontiers é a maior gravadora atualmente desse estilo, nós no início do processo de criação do álbum pensamos entrar em contato com eles, mas, declinamos da ideia por achar que  poderíamos ficar “engessados”, com isso fizemos no nosso tempo e como gostaríamos que ele saísse, tanto no áudio quanto na parte gráfica. Duvido que alguma gravadora faria o que fizemos na parte gráfica. Depois que estava tudo finalizado assinamos com um selo aqui do Brasil (Planet Music Brazil) que acabou de fechar uma parceria com a Sony Music. Quanto a lançar na Europa, houve uma proposta de um selo, mas, tínhamos acabado de assinar e como teríamos liberdade de prensar algumas cópias, optamos por fazer desse modo.

RtM: Falando um pouco sobre as faixas, comente um pouco sobre a escolha da “Land of Lightning” para ser a faixa título, e também sobre a letra dela.

Gustavo: A música Land Of Lightning é uma das razões de termos realmente levado adiante a retomada do Silent. Havíamos gravado uma demo e estávamos experimentando e a reação de uma amigo quando ouviu a música foi decisiva para iniciarmos todo o processo!

A letra fala sobre o artista no momento em que abandona tudo o que ele é pra entrar na obra de arte. Foi escrita em parceria com o James Rose!

RtM: Outro destaque é a que abre o álbum, “Around the Sun”, que também foi o clipe que antecedeu o lançamento, e possui todas as características de um hino de Melodic Rock/AOR, com grandes melodias. Gostaria que vocês comentassem também um pouco mais sobre ela, que foi uma excelente escolha para apresentar o novo álbum.

Tilly: O engraçado é que essa foi a primeira música em tudo. Foi a primeira que o Gustavo compôs exclusivamente para álbum, foi a primeira que ensaiamos, a primeira que gravamos e o primeiro vídeo, acabou que ela tinha que ser a primeira do álbum (risos) A sonoridade dessa música “norteou” o álbum.

Gustavo: É uma música que trata de morte e separação e de continuação da vida, profundamente influenciada pelo falecimento do Alexandre França.

RtM: Além dessas duas que se destacam bastante, temos muitas músicas que agradarão os fãs do estilo, como baladas como “Bye Bye Superman” e “Home”, com o álbum seguindo essa atmosfera mais emocional. Claro, há faixas mais Hard e um pouco mais diretas, mas esse lado emocional se sobressaiu. Foi algo natural ou questão de direcionamento e gosto pessoal?

Gustavo: Foi bem natural o processo de composição. Todas as músicas são carregadas de emoção pois retratam muitos anos e momentos muito intensos de nossas vidas, de despertar espiritual como em "Home" e "Where Are We Going Now" ou da constatação de que seus filhos crescem e esse tempo não volta mais como em "Bye Bye Superman!".

RtM: Acredito ser uma pergunta difícil, mas além das músicas que falamos acima, quais mais você destacaria em “Land of Lightning” e porquê?

Tilly: Sou suspeito para falar, mas, além das 4 que você citou temos: “Hello, Hello” que a letra é bem legal e a música tem uma levada bem bacana, “Numb” foi a última música que gravamos para o álbum, mesmo ele já estando em fase de mixagem, “Scene” gosto bastante do clima dela e ela tem uma parte que o Gustavo aproveitou de uma música que ele fez em 2002, quando eu disse que tinha um selo interessado em lançar nosso 2º álbum, e “Dancing In The Morning Light” que mantivemos as guitarras do Alexandre França.

Rtm: Gostaria que você comentasse sobre os agradecimentos, onde o Tilly agradece ao Gustavo "por acreditar, mesmo quando  eu achava que não tínhamos um álbum".

Tilly: Quando decidimos fazer um novo álbum fomos fazendo músicas, revisamos outras antigas e chegamos a um número de 21 composições, dessas separamos 15, eu olhava  para lista e achava que estava faltando uma música, sei lá, não conseguia ver ou achar o que era, mas, tinha essa sensação. O Gustavo falava que tínhamos o suficiente, inclusive nossa ideia inicial seria lançar 3 EPs de 5 músicas cada, a medida que ele foi finalizando as músicas fomos montando o quebra-cabeça, 3 ficaram pelo caminho e depois veio a “Numb”. Quando as 13 ficaram prontas e pude ouvir todas em sequência,  vi que ele estava certo.  (risos)

RtM: Sobre o cenário atual do AOR/Melodic Rock e Hard, dos nomes atuais do estilo, que bandas ou artistas vocês destacariam?

Tilly: Pergunta difícil, conheço várias de nome, mas, algumas nunca ouvi. A que  vem a mente e ouvi muito foi o álbum Armageddonize do Eclipse, ouvi bastante o Dark Angel do Find Me, mas, acho que esse é um projeto, os últimos do H.E.A.T e alguma do Reckless Love, porém o que mais me chamou atenção foi o Winery Dogs, achei fantástico principalmente o 1º álbum. Continuo ouvindo as bandas que marcaram minha geração e que foram influências, tenho sempre curiosidade para ouvir coisas novas desses caras, aqueles que continuaram na ativa ou aqueles que voltaram ou estão voltando.

RtM: E que características você vê como imprescindíveis para uma banda do estilo?

Tilly: Músicas com refrão marcante, um Riff maneiro de guitarra e solos de guitarra.

RtM: Pessoal, obrigado pelo seu tempo, parabéns pelo álbum, esperamos que tenha a repercussão merecida e que o próximo não demore tanto tempo.:

Silent: Melodic Rock/AOR Guided by Heart

Formed in 1991, in Rio de Janeiro, by Gustavo Andriewiski, SILENT has a story that yields a book, and with several emotions, going through that initial determination to form a band, compose music, perform shows, record videos , gaining prominence in a TV program, putting songs on the tracks of programs on a known TV network, recording the first album, receiving positive reviews on magazines like Burnn, from Japan, going through the famous musical differences, ending activities, attempts to return and even a tragedy.  (VERSÃO EM PORTUGUÊS)

After a few unsuccessful attempts to return, things were finally moving towards at the end of 2010, when 3 original members gathered to decide that the band would return, but early next year, Alexandre França died on a natural disaster in January 2011 (floods and landslides at Rio de Janeiro), which shook the other member a lot, but also to honor the will of their friend, decided to move on. Marcos Ferraz, another original member, return to the band, but soon replaced by Douglas Boiago. And also recruited Alex Cavalcanti for the guitars, completing the current line-up.

In 2015 they present the single "Around the Sound", a born hit, that brings excellent melodies and great chorus, showing a modern sonority and that the band was definitely back. In 2016, after 14 years, "The Lando of Lightning" comes out, bringing 16 pearls of Melodic Rock and AOR. And they did not stop poe there, because through its official site they continue to make available unpublished songs, live tracks, rare tracks and remixes. We talked with Tilly and Gustavo, who told us a little more about this story, which will still have many chapters, and also about the new album and future plans! Check it:

RtM: To begin with, I'd like you to talk a little bit about the causes that led the second album to take a relatively long time, from the debut with "The Bright Side" (2001), to be released.

Tilly: First of all, thanks for the space to talk a little about our band. In 2001 when "The Bright Side" was released, this album was recorded between 96/97, coincided with Gustavo going to live in USA, the band was actually stopped. With the good reviews obtained and the interest of a brazilian label to release our second album, we threatened a return, but, the thing did not evolve and we decided to decree the "end" in 2005. In 2006, Gustavo returned to Brazil and resolved together with Alexandre França to put together a new band, called REPPLICA, which lasted until 2010.

RtM: In addition to the difficulties to keep a band, even a little bigger when it comes to Melodic Rock and Hard, there was also the loss of Alexandre França.

Tilly: In December 2010 the 3 of us sat down at a bar table to play chit-chat and plan the following year, when França suggested we return with SILENT, we scheduled to start work in 2 weeks .... wanted the Fate that did not happen, unfortunately. Me and Gustavo took a year of "mourning" and we considered this return as a mission and we started working in 2012 for what would be the "Land Of Lightning".

RtM: Between this time of an album and other, summarize to us what happened to the band, in what you both (Gustavo and Tilly) remnants of the first album, were involved speaking in musical terms.

Tilly: I was trying to reassemble the band to record a second album for the label here in Brazil, and then I played in cover bands (Country and Classic Rock). A little before Gustavo came back in 2006, I played with two bands from Rio de Janeiro (Lion Heart and Krystal Tears) and then went straight to REPPLICA until December 2010. In 2011, Gustavo and I were part of a DJ project , where he wanted to play the bases of Dance Music together with a Rock Band.

Gustavo: I worked as a producer of some artists in the United States and played two cover bands, one of which I met Douglas, our bass player. I worked on an author project in partnership with my friend James Rose, whom we called Mr. Rose, but it was never published. From this project we took advantage of some songs like "Land Of Lightning" and "One More Time", for our last album! I also sang the closing song of Dragon Ball GT!

RtM: Before we talk more about "Land of Lightning", let's talk a little bit about the beginning of the band, a little of history, of how the idea came up to put together a band of the style here in Brazil, and if you aimed to promote the band in another countries.

Tilly: The band was formed from a desire of Gustavo, who no longer wanted to make songs for vocalists who did not understand what he had thought as a vocal line, so he decided that he wanted to sing.

I'm going to speak for myself, I did not think about the market outside, which was my biggest mistake, I thought at that time just make good songs, with passion and trying to get a contract with a label here and the market outside would be a consequence.

Gustavo: The foreign market was a dream in 1991, a great desire, but it seemed unattainable at the time!

RtM: And what would be your main influences and inspirations in style?

Gustavo: We have a great influence, who is actually a producer and not a band in particular. Mutt Lange produced Def Leppard, AC/DC, Bryan Adams and many others. I think he is the greatest influence of the original formation. Nowadays, with Alex Cavalcanti, there comes a strong Brian May footprint in the solos and it is logical, Bon Jovi has great participation in all this!

RtM: You also had a video to an MTV show, at the time we could still say they were a music channel, then it became impossible to produce videos, because there was nowhere to run, but fortunately, with the growth of the internet, and the popularization of channels such as Youtube and later other digital platforms, independent bands were able to publicize their works.

Tilly: True, MTV was a channel that could hold us to watch their programming. The video in question was the song "Watching", we had recorded its demo in June 1991 and the video in January 1992. As the final result pleased us a lot, we decided to send to the extinct program "MTV Demo", the clip passed in the program and was voted the best of the night, entering in the regular programming of the channel. Today, we have YouTube where you can find everything or almost everything, post a video and at the same time someone in Japan can watch. Streaming platforms are today an essential tool for bands and they have access even without having a record label.

RtM: And about the debut, with "The Bright Side" (2001), i woul like you tell us how was to have the first album released?

Tilly: I remember the day I got the lot of CDs and I opened it to check it, nowadays in any backyard you can press your CDs, at the time it was more complicated, you had to go behind factories, in our case we did it at Microservice. I also remember talking with Gustavo to turn the cd and see it silver, this was proof that the CD had been made in the factory, the CDRs were golden or blue, never silver.

RtM: And also how was the opportunity to have two songs in TV Globo novels, "I Found Faith" and "Bitter Tear", in "Vira-Lata" and "O Amor Está no Ar"? Was nice to hear a song of a independent band, in a novel of the most known brazilian TV.

Tilly: Listen to your music on TV, in the end of the chapters with credits rising or being themes of characters, it happened to both songs ... Priceless. There was a gap of 4/5 years between appearing in the sountracks of that novels and the album's release, that is, we could not reach the people who liked the style. In order to have the songs they would have to buy the soundtracks of the novels. It was a time we did not enjoy, we were young, naive and we had no entrepreneur spirit.

RtM: And the repercussion of the album? After all this, did you have a positive return? I remember it was a bit difficult to get the album, and I even introduced the band to several Melodic Rock fans.

Tilly: The repercussion of the album was very good, many interesting reviews, high notes, but, we had to send to Germany and then there began to be search here in Brazil. We entered into a partnership with an extinct SP store that started to sell our CDs and advertise in the specialized magazines.

RtM: Despite referring to the traditional names of the style, the band sounds contemporary, like many current groups, and we can perceive a band that is on an equal level, or at least very close to the material we have seen from labels like Frontiers, Melodic Rock and Aor Heaven, for example. What have you been following with this scenario, which has a loyal audience, and can this be observed by the growth of these specialized labels, and their perspectives, not only abroad but here in Brazil?

Tilly: Yes, we've always been very concerned about the quality of recording and using current elements so the sound would not be "dated". In fact, this audience was what was left of that explosion in the 80's, after 30 years, has people that started to be interested in this style, case, which is happening in Sweden, where "popular" bands of the style, has a festival, the Sweden Rock Festival, aimed at this audience, which is very faithful. Regarding the labels, I followed all the growth of the Frontiers Records, which is the biggest label of the style, and perhaps the only way that bands of the 80's still manage to release unpublished material.

RtM: Yes! Thankfully they had that determination, and there are several other labels betting on style now.

Tilly: I think if I did not have the Frontiers, we would hardly see a Nelson album, Night Ranger, Trixter, etc ... Besides showing the world new bands, already having a "label of approval", kind of, if is a release of Frontiers Records, is worth checking out.

About Brazil, I am very impressed by the quantity and quality of bands that are appearing in the style, I hope it continues to grow.

RtM: Well, "Land of Lightning" was finally released in late 2016, and even being released later that year, it appeared on several "Best of the Year" lists. And the repercussion around the album? 

Tilly: Actually it was released (on CD) in August 2016. Yes, we had good reviews, the reception around the album has been very good, we had our photo on the cover of issue 87 of Rock Meeting magazine with an interview of 4 Pages, plus some radio and TV interviews. "Around The Sun" and "Love Is" entered the normal programming of a Portuguese radio (Cascais 105.4).

RtM: Oh, "Love Is" is a real hit from the first CD !! (And it's as a bonus in the new) Well, the album is very well produced,  in the graphic part, with a very beautiful and simple aesthetic, and a great sound.  What do you think is necessary to the national bands have more recognition of the public?

Tilly: Space. Spaces to play, space in the media to generate a curiosity of the public and most important, that the guys who enjoy the style attend the concerts, give support to these bands.

RtM: As for the market for style, Melodic Rock and AOR more specifically, here in Brazil, do you think that is more complicated? Do you think that perhaps Silent could have a bigger repercussion trying to release the album in European countries? We have spoken before of Frontiers, which has grown a lot and has released many things from traditional names and new names.

Tilly: Yes, I see this as a very closed market. Frontiers is currently the biggest record label of this style. At the beginning of the process of creating the album, we thought we would get in touch with them, but we declined the idea because we thought we could get "plastered", so we did it in our time and how we wanted it. I doubt that some record company would do what we did in the graphics. After everything was finalized, we signed with a label from Brazil (Planet Music Brazil) that just finished a partnership with Sony Music. As for launching in Europe, there was a proposal from a label, but, we had just signed and as we would be free to press some copies, we chose to do so.

RtM: Speaking a little bit about the tracks, comment a little about choosing the "Land of Lightning" to be the title track, and also about the lyrics.

Gustavo: The song Land Of Lightning is one of the reasons that we have really carried out the resumption of Silent. We had recorded a demo and we were experimenting and the reaction of a friend when he heard the song was decisive to start the whole process!

The lyrics talk about the artist when he gives up everything he is to enter in the world of art. It was written in partnership with James Rose!

RtM: Another highlight is "Around the Sun", which was also the clip that preceded the release, and has all the characteristics of a Melodic Rock/AOR anthem with great melodies. I would like that you also comment a little more about it, which was an excellent choice to present the new album.

Tilly: The funny thing is that this was the first song ever. It was the first that Gustavo composed exclusively for the album, it was the first one we rehearsed, the first one we recorded and the first video, it turned out that it had to be the first one on the album (laughs). The sound of this song "guided" the album.

Gustavo: It is a song that deals with death and separation and continuation of life, deeply influenced by the death of Alexandre França.

RtM: Besides these two that stand out a lot, we have many songs that will please fans of the style, like ballads like "Bye Bye Superman" and "Home", with the album following this more emotional atmosphere. Of course, there are more Hard tracks and a little more direct, but this emotional side has stood out. Was it something natural or a matter of direction and personal taste?
Gustavo: The process of composition was very natural. All songs are loaded with emotion because they portray many years and very intense moments of our lives, of spiritual awakening as in "Home" and "Where Are We Going Now", or the realization that our children grow and that time does not return more like in "Bye Bye Superman".


RtM: I think it's a difficult question, but besides the songs we mentioned above, what else would you highlight in "Land of Lightning" and why?
Tilly: I'm suspect to talk, but besides the 4 you mentioned we have: "Hello, Hello" the lyrics are very cool and the song has a very cool rythm, "Numb" was the last song we recorded for the album, "Scene" I really like its mood and it has a part that Gustavo took advantage of a song that he did in 2002, when I said that I had a label interested in releasing our 2nd album, and in "Dancing In The Morning Light" we kept the guitars of Alexandre França.

RtM: Tilly, I would like you to comment about what you wrote on booklet, where said thanks to Gustavo "for believing, even when I thought we did not have an album".
Tilly: When we decided to make a new album we went to make songs, we reviewed old ones and we got to a number of 21 compositions, of those we separated 15, I looked at the list and I thought I was missing a song, I do not know, I could not see or find what It was, but, had that feeling. Gustavo said that we had enough, even our initial idea would be to release 3 EPs of 5 songs each, as it was finalizing the songs we were putting together the puzzle, 3 stayed by the way and then came to "Numb". When the 13 were ready and I could hear them all in sequence, I saw that he was right. (laughs)

RtM: On the current scene of AOR/Melodic Rock and Hard Rock, and current names of the style, which bands or artists you would highlight?
Tilly: Difficult question, I know several by name, but some I've never heard of. What comes to mind and I heard a lot was Eclipse's "Armageddonize" album, I heard "Dark Angel" from Find Me a lot, but I think this is a project, the HEAT's more recent album and some of Reckless Love, but what caught my attention the most It was Winery Dogs, I found it fantastic, especially the 1st album. I keep listening to the bands that marked my generation and who were influences, I'm always curious to hear new things from these guys, those who stayed active or those who came back or are coming back.

RtM: And what features do you see as essential for a Melodic Rock band?
Tilly: Songs with a great chorus, a cool guitar riff and guitar solos.

RtM: Guys, thank you for your time, congratulations for the album, we hope it has a great repercussion and the next one does not take so long:
Tilly: We thank you for the space. Rest assured, it will not be long.
